Sand Lake students visit the

Grands Rapids Symphony

Sand Lake Elementary 5th grade students
had a great time at the Grand Rapids Symphony.
It was what they were looking forward to for the
whole week. The students at the school loved the
firebird symphony. They were bouncing off the
walls in anticipation of it. “I love the symphony
because of the vibrations from the instruments.
You can feel the music, not just hear it.” stated
Garrett Ebenhoh. To go there and experience it
in person is more meaningful then just hearing
it on the radio. Remington McKinnon from Sand
Lake Elementary was the guest conductor for the
symphony. “I was excited and a little nervous
my legs were shaking” said Remington McKin-
non. She did a great job. Thank you for letting
us come Grand Rapids symphony it was a very
memorable day. I hope the 5th grade students
can come again.

Shirley Christiansen, 84, of

Howard City, formerly of Grand
Rapids, passed away March 22 at
Clark Regional Hospital in Win-
chester Kentucky.
She was born Oct. 22, 1925,
in Battle Creek, the daughter of
Ernest and Cora Fisk. Shirley
was preceded in death by her
husband M. Robert Christiansen,
whom passed away in 2000, just
four months after they celebrated
their 50th wedding anniversary.
She was also preceded in death
by a brother and sister.
Shirley obtained her degree
Summa Cum Laude from Cen-
tral Michigan. She taught school
in Battle Creek and East Grand
Rapids. She was employed to
organize the Westminster Pres-
byterian Church Day Care cen-
ter and served as the first direc-
tor. She retired from The D.S.S.
Agency where she worked in the
child support enforcement pro-
gram. Shirley served two terms
as president of the Southwestern
Child Support Council. She was
a member of Christ Commu-
nity Church . Surviving are her
children, Martin Robert ( Judy
) of Winchester, Ky., Bruce ( Su-
san ) of Wisconsin, Judy (Rory)

Sagorski
Mr. Andrew James Sagorski,
age 40, passed away unexpectedly
on Thursday, March 11, 2010 and
is now rejoicing with his Lord and
Savior. He grew up in Sand Lake,
graduated from Tri-County High
School in 1988, and received his
degree in Political Science from
Central Michigan University. An-
drew married Melissa (Astras)
on June 22, 2001. He currently
worked in sales for Cofessco Fire
Protection and previously Sie-
mens, but cooking and farming
were his passions. Andrew was
an early riser, a hard worker, an
innate chef, a lover of history, but
husband,
and de-
voted fa-
ther, and
an honor-
able man.
He was a
member

Church. Andrew is survived by
his wife, Melissa (Astras); his
children, Jordan David, Elaina
Angel, Elizabeth Mary, Lara El-
eaze, Jack Andrew; his father,
Jim and his wife, Nancy (Ciluffo)
along with her children; sisters,
Mary Rose Baxter and Jeanine
(Dan) Krebs; his in-laws, Tony
and Rita Astras and Melissa’s five
siblings, Ingrid (Tim) Ingram,
Katrina (Josiah) Meyers, Eliza-
beth (Jeff) Geshel, Mark Astras,
and Philip Astras; and a large ex-
tended family. He was preceded
in death by his mother, Mary
Elizabeth Sagorski (Napierlaski);
his infant brother, David and his
infant sister, Angela. A celebra-
tion of Andrew’s life was held
Monday at Blythefield Hills Bap-
tist Church with Pastor Matt Zai-
nea officiating. Those planning an

HOMETOWN HERO
Air Force Airman Jess E. Nagel-
hout graduated from basic military
training at Lackland Air Force Base, San
Antonio, Texas. The airman completed
an intensive, eight-week program that in-
cluded training in military discipline and
studies, Air Force core values, physical
fitness, and basic warfare principles and
skills. Airmen who complete basic training
earn four credits toward an associate in
applied science degree through the Com-
munity College of the Air Force. He is the
son of John and Dee Nagelhout of Maple NAGELHOUT
Hill St., Howard City, Mich. Nagelhout is a
2004 graduate of Tri County High School, Howard City.

for veterans, families
Montcalm County Veteran Trust Fund is here to help all veter-
ans and their family with emergency financial needs. Due to the
higher volume of veterans needing assistance, Lynda Schmidt
has returned as our Authorized Agent. The office will be open
at the VFW in Sheridan every Wednesday & Thursday from 2
to 4 pm and at other times by appointment by calling 989-291-
9680.
At this time the full Montcalm County Veterans Trust Fund
Board consist of Chairman Eric Halvorsen of the VFW, Charles
(Chuck) Zilch of the DVA, Murl (Red) Sanders of the AL and
Lynda Schmidt as their agent.
At the first interview, the veteran needs to bring with him/
her, their DD214s, proof of identification and copies of the bills
they need help with. During this interview, the veteran will have
to fill out a complete financial report, two other forms and an-
swer a set of required questions set by the state office.
Once the application is filled out, the Agent will verify all
information, then present the completed application to the Vet-
erans Trust Board Members. The Board will determine by State
Guidelines if the application will be granted or denied. If de-
nied, the applicant will receive a letter of denial from the agent
and than he/she can request an appeal with the State Veterans
Trust Fund out of Lansing.

Croton Community Church has much to offer

After 59 years, the Croton Commu-
nity Church wants to let people know
it still has much to offer. The church
was started in 1951, by Pastor Ralph
Redding. It was a small white church
then, but eventually, more space was
needed for Sunday classrooms. The
church purchased the old gymna-
sium at the end of Wealthy Street in
Croton. That was approximately 12
years ago, and now they are a “small
church tucked in a big building”. This
building is familiar to a lot of the lo-
cals because for many years it was a
roller skating rink. A unique location
for a unique little church. While the
address is actually 5750 E. Wealthy
Street, folks are just as apt to get there
following the simple direction of “Go
East at the Croton Library - straight
to end of Road”.
Many pastors and guest speakers
have passed through the doors over
the years, but the church now has a
full time congregational leader in Pas-
tor Dwight Reed. Pastor Reed, and his
wife Jane reside in Muskegon, how-
ever enjoying the beauty of the Croton
area, they also camp seasonally at the
Croton Township Campground. The
Reeds have two adult children, who
serve as missionaries in Bolivia, South
America, and five grandchildren.
The church offers a full calendar
of events, and has started wonderful
traditions by offering their Annual Pig
Roast in April, Vacation Bible School
in August, their famous Swiss Steak
Dinner in September, and of course
their Halloween event, which includes
dressing up, games, candy, donuts,
cider and hot coffee, to warm all the
Croton families and friends. The year
is ended with a heartwarming Christ-
mas program featuring guest singers
and a program put on by the “Cherub
Choir”, something not to be missed,
really putting you in the Christmas
Spirit.
April will be a very busy month for
the church, starting with the Easter
Service, where there will be inspir-
ing music, an Easter message, and
Children’s Church, with crafts and an
Easter Story, and ending with a fun
Easter egg hunt. On April 11th, there
will be a free showing of the movie
“fireproof”, which will be a lead in to
study classes on marriage and parent-
ing, lead by Pastor Reed and his wife.

stop by any Sunday or Wednesday and
meet Pastor Reed and the rest of the
church family....good food and good
people. This “small church tucked in a
big building” has a lot to offer.

OF TOWNSHIP PERMITS, LICENSES OR APPROVALS FOR THE
SALE OR DISPENSATION OF MEDICAL MARIJUANA
The Township of Reynolds Ordains:
• SECTION 1: Findings. In accordance with Act No. 110 of the Public Acts of
2006, as amended, and Act No. 3 of the Public Acts of 1895, as amended, the Town-
ship Board of Reynolds Township has determined that:
1. The provisions within the Reynolds Township ordinances, as amended, have
not kept pace with recent developments and the passing into law of Initiated
Law 1 of 2008, the Michigan Medical Marijuana Act.
2. It is within the rights of the Township Board of Reynolds Township to establish
reasonable regulations to control the sale and dispensation of medical mari-
huana in order to protect the public health, safety and welfare and in a manner
consistent with the Michigan Medical Marijuana Act.
3. Imposing a moratorium, on a limited temporary basis, is reasonable and nec-
essary in order to allow time for review of and potential amendments to the
Reynolds Township Zoning Ordinances.

On Wednesday, February 24, Mrs. Fessenden’s class at
MacNaughton Elementary got into the Olympic spirit. An opening
ceremony took place before the games began. The students paraded
through the halls of the school, carrying torches and waving flags,
which they had made themselves.
The class participated in several classroom Olympic games.
Number counting/calculations race, coloring competition,
vocabulary slalom, and curling were a few of the games the
Olympiads competed in.
Medals were awarded, followed by another parade in the
closing ceremonies. It was a fun competition.
No School on Friday, April 2 — through April 9. School will
resume on April 12.
On Wednesday, June 2, 2010 the White Pine Family Medicine
will be at Tri County High School to offer sports physicals for our
TC athletes. Physicals will be given from 2:30 - 6:30 p.m. The cost
is $20.

During the months of January and February, Mrs. Bergman’s
fifth grade social studies classes were studying the West Indies
and western exploration. After the earthquake in Haiti, the class
shifted their studies to learning more about Haiti and its problems.
The classes decided to become active and raise money to help out
this island nation in crisis.
After brainstorming, the classes decided to sponsor bake sales,
popcorn, and hot chocolate sales at Edgerton on Thursdays and
Fridays. They named the project, “Hope for Haiti.” Students helped
by donating baked items, cups, hot chocolate mix, and popcorn.
Mrs. Bergman organized each class into teams that worked on
advertising, donations, sale day operations, and other promotions.
Hot chocolate was offered at parent-teacher conferences. There
was also a canister in the office that students used to drop off
money for “Hope for Haiti.” The classes set a goal to raise $500 to
give to the American Red Cross for relief efforts in Haiti.
On March 17, during an assembly, Mrs. Bergman was able
to present a check for $615.92 to the American Red Cross of
Grand Rapids. Ms. Jessy Niswonger, the American Red Cross
representative, thanked Edgerton students and explained that the
money will be used for medical supplies and medicines needed in
Haiti.
This service project was
a great success thanks to the
donations and hard work
of the fifth grade students.
It helped the students
realize that a little effort by
individuals within a large
group makes a big task
successful. The students
want to offer a special thank
you to everyone in the
community for supporting
Edgerton’s Hope for Haiti
project.

Below is the Howard City High School History
In 1871, the community voted to build a new schoolhouse
in Howard City. Mrs. George Barber was the teacher. By 1883 an
addition was added to accommodate the growing student body.
In February of 1885, the school burned down. Churches and
the Band Hall were used as school rooms until a new building
was erected on Edgerton Street (on present Edgerton Upper
Elementary location). This building housed grades K-12 and was
called Howard City High School.
In 1934, the gymnasium was built. Today it serves as a cafeteria
and gymnasium.
In 1936, a new building was built in front of the 1885 school
building while students were attending school. It is the present Pictured is the Howard City High School built in 1885. The picture was taken
