Damn people. Its a list for fun. Relax. Most of you don't camp or have the first clue about the outdoors.
True, a lantern from Walmart will work, but sometimes its just fun to do something else. Relax folks. Some
of you seriously need a weekend in nature.

Thank you @brian! Finally someone who sees this list for what it is! So many negative
comments. It's a fun list and it's just fun to read thru and see some if the good ideas and some
not. That's all. I had fun just reading thru it. Thy are really quite clever.

I am a volunteer teacher with Leave No Trace and a good portion of this list really made me cringe. I
would point out #34 and 35 esspecially. Seriously, you are just further instilling bad behavior in people
while they are out camping and hiking. If you need a trail marker, try hiking somewhere with TRAILS. Just
because that tape is labeled biodegradable doesn't mean you need to go putting it everywhere, littering the
woods with it. Making a scavenger hunt list for kids with things like sticks and rocks an other natural or
historical items on it is not only absolutely illegal in the parks system, but teaches those kids that it's ok to
remove those things, which is a horrible, horrible habit that many adults grew up with and will never break.
I would love to see Buzzfeed do an article on learning outdoor ethics, the staff and most readers could
probably use it.

God forbid our children should learn to love nature by removing a few leaves, rocks and sticks
from the woods. I want to protect our natural areas and habitats but there is a point where
stuff like this becomes too much.

1. Is a fine specific idea, but generically it is a good idea to take along something to put under or in the
tent to flatten it out in rough ground. You also want a broom to clear the area first. I have found inflatable
mattresses are absolutely perfect for camping, take up little room, quickly inflated with a rechargeable
pump, and eliminate all that pain of lying on rocks.
2., 16., 23., 27., 40., are all convoluted lighting ideas. Get a couple flashlights and some lanterns. They
work. You dont need to find an altoids box or carefully hold your dumbass jug of water with light attached
to it around. 3 is simply stupid, wrong, and whoever made this list should remove it.
4. What? Make tin-can sandwich bread? Does this person have any idea how stupid this sounds? Nobody is
going to make bread in a can just to go camping. Ho... See More

Or you can avoid bread and eat rice. Rice is cheap, and easy to make. You can also put rice in
almost any container, and it takes up less space. It's also harder to get soggy.

2 (specifically). The water jug+head lamp idea is not to "hold your dumbass jug of water" but
to use as a stationary lantern. Instead of using a single use item like a lantern as a light source,
it's a way of minimizing and using your headlamp (also known as a flashlight with a strap, so it
can be used as the flashlight you suggested) plus a drinking water source (the jug of water) to
create a stronger-than-headlamp-alone ambient light. So 2 items can make 3 uses, as
opposed to a lantern which is only good for, well, being a lantern.
4. Like Vicky said, tin can bread is for those who may be travelling through wet environments,
or people who may not have a cooler with them. Not all "campers" do so in a stationary place.

Best idea I've ever seen for a kid scavenger hunt is have them take PICTURES of the items on the list.
Nothing gets disturbed AND it teaches them to Look but don't hurt Nature. Can you be quiet enough to get
a picture of a deer? How about a butterfly? A Bird? Be sure to turn off the shutter sound on your camera.
Be sure to have some easy ones like mushrooms, flowers, leaves and rocks, too. We want to the kids to
have fun exploring nature, not to get frustrated.

I love the idea of the scavenger hunt . even sticks rocks leaves etc. you need all that for a
FIRE... the rocks are good to keep the fire contained and to use for boiling water if you have
no pan etc. rocks help keep your back warm or whichever is not toward the fire...etc... PLUS
the kids get involved and can learn a thing or two about fires and sticks and dry and warmth

and it won't frustrate a small child to try to use a camera? Get real. Your photo idea is fun for
older children, but Jessyca is right...most of what was suggested would be used for fires...and
is not illegal to pick up. Besides, you can find these things without collecting them...it's the
finding that is fun. good grief, people.

Not all poison oak looks red!!!! It can be green, yellow, red, or a combination. It is also
parasitic- it will latch onto other trees or plants and then its oils will then be in the
other not poisonous plants leaves or bark or what not. Ive had to clean up after
many people who did not know what it looked like because Im one of the few who
isnt allergic, but Id rather not get acquainted.

I dont have a picture, but Ive always called this wash up jug Bertha, we take a jug
(like an empty and well rinsed bleach jug, something about that size. You poke a
hole on the outer ridge of the bottom side about an 1/8 inch or so. You hang it with
some twine on a branch and also tie an old nylon stocking with a bar of soap in it.
The jug is filled with water and you can wash with 2 hands by loosening the cap on
top and a stream of water will come out of the side hole near the bottom. Wash with
the soap that stays clean by not being on the ground on table, rinse, then close the
cap on top. Bertha is a great way to make clean up easy and fun. And we had fun
naming our jug and decorating it with magic marker.she had a funky weird face. I
also think this idea is much better than the laundry jugs with the push button already
on it, because like I said you get 2 hands free at the same time. Bertha is Better and I
am happy to share this idea.have simple fun camping, relax, dont take life so
serious. Camping is for fun. Camping is for studying nature and all of its wonders.

I like some of these, but a lot of these will only work if youre car-camping with a
land cruiser. Aint nobody got no room in they pack for no folgers can of TP. You
need to squash that TP flat and take it off the roll! (Ditto for coolers, hand-washing
stations, panini presses, coals, peanut-butter lanterns and laundry buckets. Where do
you people camp? At the places where people put lawn flamingos under the awning
of their winnebagos?)

We mostly camp in parks, My husband has GI issues and makes frequent trips to the
ER because of them. We like camping and fishing, and there are some REALLY nice
parks near us. I Have used the belts around the tree, we actually used them to string
a small clothes line. Worked great, and we didnt have to bring anything to drive into
the trees to do it. We use the belts to keep our bedding rolled up in transit and
storage, almost all of our gear does double duty. Not everyone wants to totally rough
it, and there are some interesting ideas on here. Take what works for you and leave
the rest.

wow. I am awestruck from the comments Ive read about this article. I passed it on to
some friends who were going camping this weekend and they loved the ideas. They
are a typical US (Kansas) family with two young kids and they want their family to
enjoy the great outdoors together. To make great family memories. What has this
country of ours come to? Yes, there are people who do not respect our world. They
litter, they burn, they dont care about othersbut this article is not about them. At
least not to me or my friends. Its about us who do care about our world and our
neighbors. Its about teaching our kids how to safely and responsibly enjoy the great
outdoors, so that they may do the same with their children. Lighten up Folksfor the
