All questions are compulsory
(b)
There are 26 questions in total. Questions 1 to 5 are very short answer type questions, carrying
one mark each. Questions 6 to 10 carry two marks each, questions 11 to 22 carry three marks
each, question 23 carry four marks and questions 24 to 26 carry five marks each.
(c)
There is no overall choice. However, an internal choice has been provided in one question of
two marks, one Question of three marks and all three question of five marks each. You have to
attempt only one of the given choices in such questions.
(d)
Use of calculators is not permitted. However, you may use log tables, if necessary.

Q.1 How is the coulomb force between two charges affected by the presence of a third charge?
Q.2 When electrons drift in a metal from lower to higher potential, does it mean that all the free electrons of the
metal are moving in the same direction?
Q.3 A current-carrying circular loop lies on a smooth horizontal plane. Can a uniform magnetic field be set up in
such a manner that the loop turns around itself (i.e., turns about the vertical axis). Give reason.
Q.4 What is the nature of waves used in radar? What is their wavelength range?
Q.5 Write the name of two quantities which does not change during transformer operation.
Q.6 Derive an expression for the energy stored in a parallel plate capacitor with air as medium between its plates. Air is
replaced by a dielectric medium of dielectric constant K after the removal of the battery.

Q.8 (a) Why is choke coil needed in the use of fluorescent tubes with ac mains? Why can we not use an ordinary
resistor instead of choke coil?
(b) An applied voltage signal consists of a superposition of a dc voltage and an ac
voltage of high
frequency. The circuit consists of an inductor and a capacitor in series. Show that the dc signal will appear
across C and the ac signal across L.
Q.9 Four cells of identical emf E, internal resistance r, are connected in series to a variable resistor. The graph shown
in fig.depicts the variation of terminal voltage of the combination with the current output:

What is the emf of each cell used?


Calculate the internal resistance of each cell.

Q.10 Two straight, parallel, current carrying conductors are kept at a distance d from each other in air. The direction of
current in both the conductors is the same. Find the magnitude and direction of the force between them.
Q.11 Define electric flux. S1 and S2 are two hollow concentric spheres enclosing chares Q and 2Q respectively as
shown in fig.

How will the electric flux through the sphere S 1 change, if a medium of dielectric constant 5 is
introduced in the space inside S1 in place of air?

Q.12 With the help of a circuit diagram, explain the use of a potentiometer for comparing the emfs of two primary cells.
Why do we prefer a potentiometer for comparing the emfs of two cells. Why do we prefer a potentiometer with
a longer wire.
Q.13 A circular coil of 20 turns and radius 10 cm is placed in a uniform magnetic field of 0.10 T normal to the plane
of the coil. If the current in the coil is 5.0 A, what is the (a) total torque on the coil, (b) total force on the coil,
(c) average force on each electron in the coil due to the magnetic field?
Q.14 What is the principle of transformer. Give two causes of power loss in it .What are the methods to minimize
it?
Q.15 State Gausss theorem. Apply this theorem to obtain the expression for the electric field intensity at a point
lying (i) inside (ii) on the surface and(iii) outside the uniformly charged conducting shell.

Q.16 (a) What are the values of (i) the horizontal component of earths magnetic field and (ii) angle of dip at the
magnetic north pole of the earth?
(b) What type of magnetic material is used in making permanent magnets?
(c) Distinguish between diamagnetic and ferromagnetic materials in respect of their permeability and
susceptibility.
Q.17 Two charged conducting spheres of radii a and b are connected to each other by a wire. What is the ratio of
electric fields at the surfaces of the two spheres? Use the result obtained to explain why charge density on
the sharp and pointed ends of a conductor is higher than on its flatter poritions?
Q.18 A resistance of R draws current from a potentiometer. The potentiometer has a total resistance
R0 (Fig. given). A voltage V is supplied to the potentiometer. Derive an expression for the voltage
across R when the sliding contact is in the middle of the potentiometer.

(a) What is the direction of propagation?
(b) What is the wavelength ?
(c) What is the frequency ?
(d) What is the amplitude of the magnetic field part of the wave?
(e) Write an expression for the magnetic field part of the wave.
Q.20 Deduce an expression for the phase difference between the current and voltage in an ac circuit containing
the inductor.
Q.21 What is self induction? Find an expression for the coefficient of self induc tion for a long straight
solenoid.
Q.22 (i)Derive an expression for torque acting on a bar magnet held at an angle with the direction of
magnetic field.
(ii) A bar magnet of magnetic moment 5 A m 2 has poles 0.20 m apart. Calculate the pole strength.
Q.23 A group of 20 students of a school were going on a trip in their bus. When their bus was passing through a
lonely forest area, it started raining. After some time rain became heavy and there was lot of lightening and
thundering. Some students of the group were afraid of lightening and wanted the bus driver to stop the bus so that
they can take shelter somewhere under the tree to save themselves. Amit a student from the group had science
background and knew the cause of lightening. He assured his fellow students that we should remain within the bus
because the lightening will have no effect due to electrostatic shielding effect of the metallic body of the bus.
(i) What is electrostatic shielding effect?
(ii) What is the cause of lightening?
(iii) What values are shown by Amit?

Q.24 An LC circuit contains a 20 mH inductor, and a 50 F capacitor with an initial charge of 10 mC. The
resistance of the circuit is negligible. Let the instant the circuit is closed be t = 0.
(a) What is the total energy stored initially? Is it conserved during LC oscillations?
(b) What is the natural frequency of the circuit?
(c) At what time is the energy stored
(i) completely electrical (i.e., stored in the capacitor)? (ii) completely magnetic (i.e., stored in the inductor)?
(d) At what times is the total energy shared equally between the inductor and the capacitor?
(e) If a resistor is inserted in the circuit, how much energy is eventually dissipated as heat?

Explain, with the help of a labeled diagram, construction, principle, working and theory of an a.c. generator.
Q.25

State Biot Savart Law. Using it, deduce an expression for the magnetic field on the axis of a circular
current loop. Hence, find the magnetic field at the centre of circular current loop. Draw the magnetic field
lines due to a circular current carrying loop.
OR
With the help of a labeled diagram, explain the principle ,working and theory of a moving coil
galvanometer. How can its sensitivity be increased ?

Q.26 (i) State balanced condition of Wheatstone Bridge.


(ii) Calculate the value of R in the balance condition of Wheatstone bridge, if the carbon resistor connected
across the arm CD has the colour sequence red, red and orange, as shown in the fig.
(iii) If now the resistance of the arms BC and CD are interchanged, to obtain the balance condition, another
carbon resistor is connected in place of R. What would now be sequence of colour bands of the carbon
resistor?

OR
(i) With a circuit diagram, briefly explain how a meter bridge can be used to find the unknown resistance of a
given wire.
(ii) In a metre bridge in the given figure, the null point is found at a distance of 60 cm from A. If now a
resistance of 5 is connected in series with right resistance, the null point occurs at 50 cm. Determine the
values of both resistances.
