Returning Archers feature shooting, quickness

By JOE SHOUSE
Progress Sportswriter
ANTWERP - Antwerp returns seven let-
ter winners including its top scorer but must
find a replacement for their lone graduate
in Trenton Copsey. The 6-foot-4 Copsey
averaged 14 points and nearly 10 boards
per contest. The blue-and-white will lack
size, but has a returning group that knows
what it takes to get through the w ars of a
tough season, including a competitive Green
Meadows Conference.
“Obviously we don’t have the height
that we would like to have so we will com-
pensate with our speed and quickness. We
have excellent shooters and so our outside
shooting will be key. It’s all about team
and we will use the team concept to carry
us throughout the year,” said head coach TJ
Hammer.
The seven returning letter winners include
Sam Williamson, Matt Jones, Josh Longard-
ner, Trey Mills, Brandon Pendergrast, Dylan
Peters and Jeff Coleman.

Experience, quickness key to Lady Archer season

By JOE SHOUSE
Progress Sportswriter
ANTWERP – After being out of coach-
ing for a couple of years, Scott McMichael,
former Archer boys coach, returns to take
over the Lady Archer program.
The popular coach had a successful run
in his early coaching career when he was a
high school girls coach in Florida.
McMichael inherits a plethora of expe-
rience, including five starters and several
seniors returning for their fourth year at the
varsity level.
Avery Braaten, Kiana Recker, Audrie
Longardner and Sierra Cline, all seniors,
will be joined by junior and two-year letter
winner Peyton Short plus a couple of soph-
omores, two-year letter winner Rachael
Williamson and Hope Smith.
Those seven will battle for a starting
position and all will see plenty of playing
time, according to McMichael.
Williamson, Braaten, Longardner,
Recker, Short and Smith – all returning let-
ter winners – were members of the Lady
Archers’ successful volleyball team. Coach
McMichael is looking for that same win-
ning attitude to carry over from the volley-
ball court to the basketball court.

Head coach Tony Gonzales may not have a

“Right now, it looks like we will have

According to Gonzales, the Panther

Plenty of changes for Wayne Trace boys

By KEVIN WANNEMACHER
Progress Sportswriter
HAVILAND – Coming off of a Final
Four appearance in 2014-15, several chang-
es are the challenge for the 2015-16 version
of the Wayne Trace boys basketball team.
First, the Raiders have to find a way to re-
place four graduated seniors from the squad
that finished 25-2 overall and claimed a
Green Meadows Conference championship
with a 7-0 record.
The red-white-and-blue graduated over
31 points and 13 rebounds and now must
find a way to replace that production.
On top of that, Wayne Trace received the
bad news that the Raiders move up to Di-
vision III for the 2015-16 season instead of
remaining Division IV.
The Raiders also were sent to the south
district for the coming season rather than
north, meaning Wayne Trace will take part
in the Lima Senior district that includes
