2.007 Design and Manufacturing 1

Homework #4
Date Issued: Thursday 21 March, 2013
Date Due: Thursday 11 April, 11AM (bring hard copy to room 3-449)

As described in the course policies document, this is one of four homeworks you will
complete in this course. Each homework counts as 5% of your total grade.

1) (34 points)

There are two options for completing this problem (check only one block below):

Design review and demonstration with a 2.007 instructor or UA initials_____________

I documented my work in writing (attached in hardcopy) and I would like that to be graded. I
realize that without a hardware demo, this work can earn at most a grade of B.
You will develop a system of motors, sensors, and a small software program for the Arduino to
implement a function integrating sensing and actuation. Your program will accomplish the functions
described below. Alternately, you can define a different set of functions of similar difficulty,
a) A robot is in the starting box on the
left side of the field. At the start, the
robot should sit still. When a light to
the right of the robot illuminates, the
robot should begin moving forward.
You can feel free to adapt the system

b) The robot should advance toward the
back board, take a right turn, and
approach the centerline. It should not
come closer than 2 inches from the
rail or backboard nor drift farther than
4 inches from them. (NOTE: Imagine
the robot has design features so that it
doesnt fall into the biowaste bin.)

2) (33 points total) You fill a one liter soda bottle with air at 60 psi gauge pressure and plan to
use it as a source of power for a machine.
A) How much energy will be required to fill the bottle to 60 psi assuming that you pump the
air slowly enough for the reservoir to be at thermal equilibrium (therefore P*V is
constant) with the ambient air at a temperature of 20 degrees Centigrade and 1
atmosphere of pressure?

B) Estimate the force applied if 60 psi air at 20 degrees C is connected to a piston with a
10mm internal diameter and a 5mm stroke.

C) The one liter of air in the soda bottle is transferred into a balloon. What will be the
temperature of the air in the balloon if we assume that you transfer the air quickly
enough so that heat transfer to the surrounding air can be neglected (therefore P*V 1.4 is
constant)?

D) Imagine the process in part C is complete and then time passes so that the air comes
into thermal equilibrium with the room at 20 degrees Centigrade. Characterize the state
of stress of the rubber in the balloon and estimate the energy stored in the rubber

3) (33 points) Go find three items in the supply cabinet or the tool chest or in a mechanical or
automotive parts catalog (e.g., mcmaster.com, wmberg.com, www.smallparts.com.au, www.picdesign.com, vexrobotics.com, solarbotics.com, mossmotors.com).
i) Make a hand drawing of the component and indicate its main features.
ii) Explain what function it accomplishes (two or three sentences).
iii) List a common use of that element in mechanical systems (two or three sentences and,
preferably, a picture or drawing of the installation)
iv) Describe one way the item is manufactured (two or three sentences).
