DELPHOS The holidays

are fast approaching and one of
the kickoff events in Delphos
will be the second-annual
Kiwanis Hometown Christmas
on Friday.
The Kiwanis took over the
event previously sponsored
by the Delphos Area Chamber
of Commerce a year ago. The
downtown activities and entertainment this year are fully
sponsored by the Kiwanis as a
way of saying thank you to
the businesses and individuals
in the community for supporting the club throughout the year
at its various fundraisers and
projects.
As part of this years spe-

cial events, the City of Delphos

will offer a Christmas Special
on 2016 season tickets for the
Delphos Municipal Swimming
Pool.
Certificates can be purchased
from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Friday
at the Municipal Building, 608
N. Canal St. and from 6-8:30
p.m. at fire chiefs office in the
Safety Service Building at 125
E. Second St.
The one-day special prices
will be $40 for individual season passes and $125 for family
season passes. These certificates
must be presented to the city
along with a completed application in May when ticket sales
begin. Individual passes are normally $80 and family passes are
$190.
As always, the Delphos EMS
will be serving up their delicious

Ham and Bean Supper at the

EMS building beginning at 5
p.m. for only $4 a dinner. Meals
are carry-out only this year.
The Canal Commission
Museum on Main Street will
open its doors at 5:30 p.m.
with the annual Christmas Tree
Festival in full swing.
The Delphos Museum of
Postal History will offer a special commemorative Christmas
stamp cancellation featuring the
mail sled on display in the museum. The cancellation stamp will
also be available at the post
office for 30 days. There will
also be a special Christmas card
exhibit to peruse.
Hometown Christmas entertainment and activities will start
at 6 p.m. with the Grinch, Frosty
the Snowman and an elf walking the downtown to meet and

greet with families.

Children can write, draw and
create a letter to the Man in the
Big Red Suit at Schrader Realty.
They can take their letter with
them to hand deliver to Santa
or the business can mail them
straight to the North Pole. There
will also be snacks.
Mrs. Claus will again join
Santa and the pair will be welcomed to town atop a fire truck
with a parade starting at 6:30
p.m. from the Delphos Herald
parking lot, proceeding down
Main Street, turning east on
Second Street and ending at
Santas house in front of the
First Financial drive through.
All are invited to decorate wagons, etc., and participate, including businesses.
At the end of the parade, Santa
will light the official Christmas

Tree at his house and Mrs. Claus

will hold storytime with a new
Christmas story every 15 minutes at the Grind. Art Me traveling art studio will also offer
free face painting there.
Those who were disappointed
the rain canceled the train rides
last year can take heart. This
years train is covered and will
be traveling around downtown
rain or moon shine. There will
also be free pony rides.
Free hot dogs and hot chocolate will be available at Santas
house and the Jolly Ol Elf
will have his sleigh and one
of his reindeer for the kids to

Baby Jesus waiting on blanket

The nativity has been placed in the yard at the Delphos Public Library. Will Baby Jesus receive yet another
blanket this year? According to Library Director Kelly Rist, for many years now, someone always makes sure
the infant has a warm blanket shortly after the display makes its appearance. By Monday, Baby Jesus will
be wrapped in a blanket, Rist said. No one knows who does it. Rist said there was an occasion the blanket
came up missing and it was replaced quickly. At the end of the season, the blankets are laundered and given to
the Thrift Shop. (DHI Media/Nancy Spencer)

VAN WERT COUNTY A Delphos native has been

hired to fill the position of Solid Waste Management
District Director in Van Wert County.
The Van Wert County Board of Commissioners
announced the hiring of Jerry Neumeier late Wednesday.
The hiring was made after two rounds of interviews of
possible candidates and in cooperation with representatives of the local board for the Solid Waste Management
District.
We are very pleased to have found someone of
Jerrys quality and integrity to fill this position, Van
Wert County Commissioner Todd Wolfrum said. George
Brake is irreplaceable in what he was able to do for our
community, but were hoping Jerry can maintain what
George created and use his expertise to build further our
countys recycling capabilities.
Neumeier, a St. Johns High School alumni, comes to
the Van Wert County facility with several years of management and recycling experience under his belt, most
recently serving as an operations manager for a local
recycling business. Neumeier also has served in the past
as the mayor of Delphos.
Neumeier said his is still transitioning to his new job.
I getting to know all the people in the county and
routes, etc, Neumeier said. Theres a lot of PR work and
Ill be writing grant applications to the EPA.
Neumeier started his new job on Monday.

Smiley Park was transformed
on Wednesday evening, with the
annual Lighting of the Christmas
Garden. This is the fourth
year for the festive event that
has quickly become a local tradition as several hundred families toured through the thousands of lights and displays. The
Christmas Garden is open every

O-G downs LadyCats

By Charlie Warnimont
DHI Media Correspondent
news@delphosherald.com

OTTAWA Kalida was trailing Ottawa-Glandorf by one

point early in the third quarter of their non-league game Friday
afternoon.
Thats when the Titans offense and defense reasserted itself.
O-G went on a 17-0 run in the third quarter to break open
a close game, while the Ladycats struggled with turnovers
against the Titans full-court pressure. Those two items allowed
the Titans to rebuild a lead that allowed them to down Kalida
57-48 at the Robert J. Hermiller Gymnasium.
The Titans are now 3-0, while Kalida dropped to 1-2.
Kalida trailed by double digits in the first half, but as the
Lady Titans battled through some first half foul trouble the
Ladycats were able to battle back, pulling within two at halftime (22-20) and one point in the third quarter at 24-23 after a
three-pointer by Kylie Osterhage. That was as close as Kalida
would get as the Titans went on a 17-0 run fueled by 14 points
from sophomore Kadie Hempfling, who scored 12 straight
points at one point in the the quarter for O-G.
Titan head coach Troy Yant felt the halftime break was key
for his team in the third quarter as they were able to get their
legs back under them and get key players back on the court
who had to sit late in the first half because of foul trouble.
After Osterhages three-pointer, Hempfling hit two free
throws for the Titans before Lexi Schroeder dropped in a
three-pointer. After two free throws by Kylie White and a
layup from Dani Ellerbrock, Hempfling took over as she hit
a pair of three-pointers and added a short jumper for a 41-23
Titan lead.
Hempfling finished the quarter with 16 points as she had
a team leading 26 points along with six rebounds, five assists
and she blocked a shot.
While Hempfling carried the Titan offense for a stretch of
time, O-Gs defense made life rough for the Kalida offense in
the third quarter by forcing a number of turnovers. For the day,
the Ladycats turned the ball over 33 times, 17 in the second
half, against the Titans fullcourt pressure.
We talked at halftime that we had momentum, but unfortunately the third quarter started like the game started (12 first
quarter turnovers), Kalida coach Adam Huber said. We just
couldnt get the ball past halfcourt for long periods of time.
Its frustrating because you come into the game thinking about
needing to take care of the basketball. Weve averaged over
20 turnovers the first two games, so its not just O-G, its our
focus. We get very, very loose with the ball and play passive.
When we are aggressive we could play with them. When we
are passive and letting them dictate the tempo we turn the ball
over.

Wildcat boys opener impressive

DELPHOS When you

have almost as many turnovers as shots in boys basketball, the outcome usually
doesnt bode very well for
you.

Vanlue as the Red and White
opened their season with an
impressive 87-26 demolition
Friday night inside The Stage.
The visiting Wildcats
turned it over 34 times and
had 38 shot attempts (hitting
a mere 9 for 23.7%, including
6-of-17 downtown).
Its no secret; we want
to use our defense to create offense. We feel that is
our best way of competing
each night and it means we
have to get better on defense;
the players know it, too,
Jefferson head coach Marc
Smith explained. We were
hoping to turn them over and
hit layups at the other end. I
was pleased with our effort
on both sides. We knew from
scouting that they would try
to be physical and go inside
and we handled that well. We
were also very aggressive and
got it into the post a lot.
The hosts turned that into
a solid 32-of-62 shooting
night (4-of-16 long range) for
51.6 percent.
Three hit double digits:
Air Force signee Trey Smith
with 31 (6 boards, 4 steals),
and Jace Stockwell (8 boards,

Auer (5 rebounds) with 10
each.
We know we need
to have good balance; our
schedule gets tougher in a
hurry, Coach Smith added.
I didnt expect us to shoot
that well, having no scrimmages and only six practices.
We know our talent and athleticism but were still figuring out the rotation and such,
plus our conditioning. As a
coaching staff, (JV coach)
Mark (Jettinghoff) and I
have coached a lot of games
together but the other four are
new, so thats an adjustment
as well.

Michigan- OSU is coming off a dismal

Michigan has a strong defense and 10 of
the last 11 Michigan coaches won their first

Notre Dame- The Irish need to win

they will.
Florida State- This is a coin-flip game,
but if the Noles win and if Florida beats
Alabama next week, the SEC will miss out

thanks to four offensive

New England- Brock Osweiler is really

Seattle- I cant image the Seahawks, who

Baltimore- Even with Matt Schaub, the
Ravens are better than Cleveland.
Atlanta- Ive been off the Vikings, then

If they are looking for excuses, theyll find

Houston- New Orleans defense is pretty

DALE METZGER
COLLEGE
Ok this is the one week of the college
football season you can throw records, stats,
points spreads and experts opinions out the
window and why is that? Well, its called
rivalry week, you can pick games one of
two ways this week 1) pick with your heart
or 2) pick with your head because you never
ever know what can happen in these games
because these teams just dont like each
other. So here we go with the picks:
Ohio State at That team from up northWinner Ohio State- Did last weeks upset
loss hurt or help OSU? I think it helped them;
now they are going to be focused, pissed
and ready to take it out on someone (EN: In
spades after that putridity!). Add in that if
they beat that team from up north and then
next week Big 10 Championship Game (EN:
Needing Penn State to beat Michigan State
and it could happen; the proverbial letdown!)
against Iowa could get them back into the
playoff picture if the cards fall right.
Notre Dame at Stanford- Winner Notre
Dame-ND dropped in the playoff picture
when they won, so look for the much-improving Irish to make a run to put themselves
back into the top 4 and make the playoffs.
Florida State at Florida- Winner FloridaFSU made a change at QB a month back but
hasnt face a team or fans like they will at
the Gators. FSU hasnt impressed on the road
this year and have struggles when they have
won on the road; look for the Gators to get
to the QB often.
Ole Miss at Mississippi State-Winner Ole
Miss- Ole Miss has been playing a much
harder schedule while Miss St. has played
some lower talented teams; look for this to
give the edge to Ole Miss.
Oklahoma at Oklahoma State:Winner
Oklahoma- The Sooners are playing hot ball
right now; they are getting hot and staying
hot when they need to, making them a very
very scary team to face right now.
UCLA at USC- Winner USC- UCLA had
some big injuries last week that will hurt
them on defense. I really like the UCLA
offense lately but I think they will give up to
many points on defense.

Egg fly patterns (single or cluster, sucker

spawn, etc.) work well as a single fly or in
tandem with a nymph or streamer once the
fish move upstream. Salmon or trout eggs are
fished as either individual eggs or grouped
together in mesh spawn bags about the size
of a dime or nickel. Eggs can be bounced
along the bottom with the current or fished at
or near the bottom suspended under a bobber.
The fish will be oriented to cover or moderate to deep water pools in the fall.
Ohio Fisheries Management: This fall,
our central Ohio fisheries management sampled Alum Creek, OShaughnessy, Indian
Lake and Kiser Lake using gill nets to collect
saugeye and white bass/hybrid striped bass.
Length, weight, and age of collected fish were
obtained. This data gives insight on the size
distributions, relative abundance and growth
of fish in our reservoirs. Most importantly,
this information allows for proper management of our fantastic fisheries.
Fisheries management crews saw good
numbers and many large fish. The fall bite is
happening now; get out there and catch some
fish!

Steelhead Fishing Etiquette

Posted by: Andy Whitcomb
The presence of steelhead trout in or around
Pennsylvanias Lake Erie tributaries now has
anglers out in droves. The size of the run so far this
year seems to be well below expected and there
are times when it appears there are more anglers
than fish. Here are a few fishing etiquette rules so
everyone can get along under such high pressure
conditions.
Fish Off times. Avoid weekends, if possible.
Monitor hunting seasons. Opening Day of a
particular hunting season can lessen the fishing
pressure in some areas. And learn to embrace bad
weather. A little cold, light spitting rain and sleet
probably will not affect steelhead fishing activity
but will keep the fair weather anglers inside.
Arrive early. If someone is already in your
spot, and there is only room for one, get there
earlier next time. Look at this as an opportunity to
explore some new holes or tributaries.
Match the technique. If there is a popular
stretch of water with synchronized fly anglers drifting and casting at similar rates to avoid tangling,
dont think you can zing a small spoon through that
hole with your spinning outfit.
Stay wide. When you must pass an angler in
the stream, try to swing wide on shore. If someone
walks through your hole and disturbs the fish, dont
give up. Surprisingly, it might even help sulking
fish return to feeding behavior in a few minutes.
Be patient. On most of my steelhead fishing
trips, I notice an old fellow or two sitting on a log,
waiting and watching the crowds fish. When an
angler leaves, they rarely fill the open spot because
the chances are great that the angler(s) left because

some other big plays and rewarded

ourselves on the other end; we werent
doing that necessarily earlier, though we
were still making some big plays. We
had a little bit of a lapse in the third period we got too tentative but overall, this was a good, solid team effort.
To LCC head coach Katie Krieg, its
another step in growing pains.
We only have a couple of girls that
are in the same role as last year; we have
a lot of girls from the JV team that are
getting their first minutes of varsity,
she explained. We have more big girls
than weve ever had and were running
some different things; basically, we still
need to have the ball in Madison and
Sams hands but our other girls have
to contribute. When St. Johns began
safeguarding those two, we didnt know
how to handle it.
A 3-ball by Pohlman at 7:14 gave
the Jays the lead from the start. They
slowly built a 12-4 lead on a triple by
Madilynn Schulte (17 markers - 5 triples - 4 boards) with 3:42 to go in the
period. The T-Birds scored the last four
including a baseline drive by Stolly
at the 34-second mark to get within
12-8.
Both team were looking to be patient
on offense and getting good shots (1
turnover in the opening stanza and 9
for the half). A trio by Stolly just over a
minute into the second got the T-Birds
within 12-11 but it was all Jays after
that. They pitched a shutout the rest of
the way as the hosts missed their final
seven shots (6 treys) and turned it over
four times. The Jays werent exactly on
fire but a triple by Taylor Zuber and a
deuce and trey by Schulte the latter

The guests opened up a 12-point

without a score. On the other end, the
T-Birds began to penetrate against the

tosses at 6.3 ticks to tie it at 27 to enter
the fourth.
St. Johns was 4-of-6 at the stripe

-------Minnesota at Atlanta- Winner Atlanta- Look for a better-than-inthe-past defense in Atlanta to help slow down the Vikings offense.
The Falcons have a top young QB and one of the best receiving corps
in the NFL; the only factor to this game is that the Falcons top RB got
hurt last week which could cause them issues.
-------New York Giants at Washington- Winner NY Giants- The Giants
lead the way in a bad division. Washington players are finding excuses to blame their losses to the extent of the officials dont like their
teams name; I mean come on really!! You lose because your bad.
Giants win.
----------New Orleans at Houston- Winner Houston- Houston isnt strong
when it comes to their offense but that defense is a beast at times.
New Orleans is just not having a good year be it due to losing key
players or a defense that gets burnt often and a lot; they are just not
the team they have been.

Last of ring-necked pheasants released

COLUMBUS More than 15,000 ring-necked
pheasants were released at 25 Ohio public hunting
areas this fall to provide additional hunting opportunities across the state, according to the ODNR.
The final release of the year took place on
Wednesday.
A map showing release areas on the Tri-Valley
Wildlife Area for the youth releases is available at:
bit.ly/pheasantrelease.
Youth and regular pheasant hunting within
the Ringneck Ridge Area in Sandusky County
requires a free permit from the Sandusky County
Park District. For more information regarding the
issuance of these free hunting permits, contact the
Sandusky County Park District Office at 419-3344495.
A table of release numbers and locations can be
found at: bit.ly/pheasantlocations.
Pheasant hunting season remains open through
Jan. 10, 2016, with a daily bag limit of two rooster
(male) birds. No hens (females) can be killed.
Females are all brown while the males have a green
head, a red and brown body and long tail feathers.
Statewide pheasant hunting hours are sunrise
to sunset.

Bi-Weekly Aerial Waterfowl Survey
Objective: The bi-weekly aerial waterfowl survey is used to monitor waterfowl abundance during
fall/winter migration throughout the northern portion of Ohio. This survey also helps identify habitat
types critical to waterfowl and helps document
waterfowl use of restored wetland projects over
time.
Procedure: The survey is flown weekly during
September and bi-weekly from October through
January. The survey is flown over selected water
areas distributed in the Lake Erie marsh region in
northwestern Ohio, and will once again include
Wildlife Areas throughout northern Ohio including Big Island, Killdeer Plains, Grand Lake St.
Marys/Mercer, Killbuck Marsh, Funk Bottoms,
and Mosquito Creek. This survey is conducted on
or near the 1st and 15th of each month, weather
permitting. The survey crew identifies and estimates the number of each species of waterfowl
encountered on the survey sites. Survey transects
are flown at an altitude and route to optimize
waterfowl identification and minimize disturbance.
Survey Sites: Sandusky Bay Marshes; Pickerel
Creek Wildlife Area; Toussaint Marsh Area; Magee
Marsh Wildlife Area; Metzger Marsh Wildlife
Area; Maumee Bay; Ottawa Wildlife Area National
Wildlife Refuge; Cedar Point National Wildlife
Refuge; Navarre Marsh National Wildlife Refuge;
Darby National Wildlife Refuge; Grand Lake St.

Having Gods Peace

The Herald - 9

One definition of peace is freedom from anxiety, and it seems that it is becoming increasingly more difficult to be stress-free and at peace with ourselves
in our daily lives. The world is full of anxieties, and if we are only at peace when
things go well, chances are that we may never have real, lasting peace. The
Bible tells us that if we have been put right with God through faith, we have
peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ (Romans 5:1). Everyone goes
through trying times, and the way we handle these situations reflects whether
or not we have the peace that comes from God, because Mans peace is temporary and short-lived. I believe we have all known people who have been at
peace through some very difficult situations. Their love and trust in God seems
to sustain them when they are faced with a crisis, and they believe that God
loves them and will see them through difficult times. Our relationship with our
Heavenly father requires nurturing and love. Developing this relationship will
kindle and sustain a more peaceful existence in our lives.
Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give
I unto you.
K.J.V. John 14:27

Our local churches invite you to join them for their activities and services.

Whats
Snu?
and stuff

That

by EVELYN MARTIN

Genealogy is my hobby, all

right I will confess sometimes
I do obsess. Vacations were
spent in libraries and archives
going through a treasure trove
of records. Birth dates and
other facts of my ancestors
come to mind quickly. Nongenealogy friends and relatives get a glassy-eyed look
when I start a conversation
with My great-great etc.
Obtaining a computer
along with a family tree program added a new dimension. In 2003 I finally posted my family tree online. It
had been posted for awhile
when I received a query about
the maiden name of one my
maternal ancestors, Maria
Hessling, the wife of Andrew
Recker.
The querys author had
found another tree online that
gave the maiden name as Snu
and she was wondering where
I had found the Hessling
name. I replied that I had a
copy of the original church
record showing the marriage
of Maria Anna Hessling to
Andrew Recker and the name
was also listed as Hessling in
the Recker/Redecker Family
Book compiled by Charles
Recker. She wrote back that
she would try to contact the
author of the other tree and
ask where they had found the
Snu name.

Later she replied that contact had been made with the
author of the tree with the
Snu entry and he explained
that Snu stood for Surname
unknown. This is where
the saying If it walks like a
duck and quacks like a duck
it probably is a duck comes
to mind.
Snu looked like a surname/duck and it sounded like a surname/duck so
it probably was a surname/
duck. But it wasnt and this
miss-information could cause
a great deal of lost time for
other researchers. So the lesson learned, before posting or
publishing your tree, review
it as others would see it and
ask yourself if it make sense.
Doing this will avoid the
query of Whats Snu?
The Brrrrr Months
September,
October,
November and December
could be called the brrr
months because of the colder
weather but I know them as
the br months because of
the Pastors shorthand on old
church records.
In genealogical research
its all well and good to locate
original records, but to read
them correctly is another matter altogether.
As if deciphering old
records that were written,
you suspect, with watered

down ink and a nib that had

seen better days was not hard
enough, you often have the
added complexity of them
being written in Latin. To
make things worse, as with
all handwritten records like
these, the same person did
not record every entry. Some
entries were very neat and
clear and some are just downright scribble.
When I first started looking at original church records
I became confused about
some of the dates that were
written on them. The names
of the month were written out
for the first part of the year
then after May or June the
writer switched to the numbers 7, 8, 9 and 10. Why? The
clue was the br written after
the number.
We think of September,
October, November, and
December as months 9, 10,
11 and 12, but originally these
months were 7, 8, 9, and 10
on the ancient Roman calendar. This is how they got their
names. Septembers name
comes from septem, Latin for
seven. Octobers name comes
from octo, Latin for eight.
Novembers name comes from
novem, Latin for nine. and
Decembers name comes from
decem, Latin for 10.

George LeaSure Wins

Easy Money
George LeaSure, a local attorney, now
holds the belt for making Soft money
Eighty dollars in four and a half minutes is
not poor wages by a long shot.
That is exactly the amount that George
won, on a wager, by floating from the locks
at the Dolby & Morton mill to the Fifth street
bridge, Tuesday afternoon about 4:30. He
made the total distance of about 800 feet in
four and a half minutes. George used his hands
and arms as a rudder.
Henry Kundert forked over $35 to George,
and several side bets brought the total up to
$80. Not so worse, George remarked after
completing his aquatic feat. I am confident
that I could float down to Ft. Jennings. Nature
has provided me with water wings, all her
own.
Georges unusual buoyancy is due to the
mammoth protuberance, commonly known
as an abdomen, which he carries around with
him. Knowing that fat men can float without
any effort to speak of, we are unable to understand why any person would bet perfectly good
money on an absolutely one-sided proposition.
But Kundert and George got to talking one
evening about hunting, fishing, and swimming. It was when the latter subject came up
that George declared he bet he could float
on his back from the lock to the Fifth street
bridge.

Opinion
About
that
nap ...

Mending fences

Nancy Spencer

On the
Other Hand

Im still waiting on the euphoric nap that so

many talk about after filling their bellies with
Thanksgiving turkey and such.
Was I sleepy after eating a full meal (and
a little more just because)? Yes. Did I take a
nap? No.
I wasnt chained to the sink doing dishes or
too busy putting away leftovers. I was playing
UNO Attack! for hours.
The game was a gift last Christmas and we
sure have gotten our use out of it. Its just like
the card game with a little more pizazz with
the possibility of up to seven cards spitting
from an mechanical dealer at you when you
get a hit two or more. Fun!
Now today is the day! Its time to get the
outside lights up and the tree and the garland
and the knick-knacks! Aaaaaaaahhhhh! Now
I want that nap.
I do have a plan. Im putting up all the
outside stuff first. I have a theory that if your
outside stuff is up, then everyone just assumes
you have the inside done as well. Maybe
its just me, but Im running with it. Its my
theory.
So Ill dig under the stairs until I get to the

outside bags of lights and bow and extension

cords, etc. Ill have to find a home for everything that comes first. That will be the hard
part.
Then Ill find the stepladder and fight
with putting the plug in where the light bulb
usually goes on the porch light and Ill have a
scrape or two on a knuckle or two. Its tradition! Its not the plug, it trying to fit my fingers and the plug from the extension cord into
a small space and still being able to wiggle the
plug in where it belongs.
The outside only takes a few hours from
start to finish so if I get going first thing, I can
get that nap in and no one will be the wiser.
Then I can get up and start on the inside and
Ill practically still sort of be on schedule. Yes!
Ive already planned out much of the
inside decorating. I have some new pieces
this year that will take center stage so others
will have to be moved and more stuff moved
and aaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhh! Maybe I dont
have a plan. What if I cant find a home for
everything I love to see out for Christmas?!?
I need to lie down. I dont feel so good.
About that nap

From 2013-14, we spent

many hours and dollars to
pot-belly-proof our fence.
Each time we thought we had
aced the boundary between
Beatrice, Carlton and the outside world, the call of ripe
mulberries, wild raspberries
and general curiosity sent us
racing for more fence posts
and staples.
A combination of triple
staples, wrapped goat fencing
and two-by-fours at the base
seemed to seal the deal, just
in time, too, as good neighbor
Kaseys tomato patch ripened
across the road.
We tripped merrily into
2015, at least after our toes
thawed from winter. Spring
rain and flooding kept all
four-leggers under shelter,
dampening any desire for
adventure. Then I got a call
at the office informing me
that, while our fence was
pig-resistant, it was no match
for goats, especially a goat
that is over six feet-tall when
stretched up on two legs.
Mister Bill is a very large
goat. While he is not very
ambitious, he is motivated
by high things that might be

edible. While reaching for

walnuts/leaves/a plastic bag
affixed to a branch, he pushed
the fence down enough that
he probably toppled over to
the world beyond. His little pygmy goat friend Marty
followed, probably because
Bills belly was lowering the
fence as the big guy ruminated whatever it was that he
plucked during the journey.
So it was that Saturday
afternoon, as the sky puzzled
over thoughts of rain, then
snow, then a soppy mixture of
sneet, we triple-stapled and
boarded the top of the fence.
Mister Bill watched the proceeding from inside the
corral the slammer that
held him until we finished
in the cold, late afternoon
rain. Marty smacked his long
horns against the fence a few
times, gave up and walked
away to his shelter.
As I huddled under a blanket with a cup of hot chocolate, thinking about all the
other ways I would have rather spent my Saturday doing,
I heard soft snoring at my
feet. Carlton, worn out from
his cold afternoon of human

danger. They contend the problem is

with lax Travel Visa rules. Dangerous
people are more likely to enter the
country with a valid Travel Visa than
via the refugee program.
President Obama defends the proposed Syrian refugee program. He
calls them widows and orphans. He
assures us they will be fully vetted.
Supporters say America has always
been a safe haven for immigrants
seeking safety and opportunity for
their families.
But most people want to be cautious. Times have changed and they
want to be vigilant in protecting the
homeland in this dangerous new
world. They worry our enemies will
use our compassion to infest our cities with a few lone wolves intent on
terrorizing us.
Most Americans consider themselves to be patriotic. We embrace
our heritage and we believe anyone
brave enough to relocate here should
conform to our culture and voluntarily assimilate.
Heres where many people express
concerns. Do we welcome them with
open minds and hearts, even if some
of them are capable of betraying our
trust? Liberals accept the fact terror

Protecting Ohioans
from predatory loans
BY U.S. SENATOR
SHERROD BROWN

Right now, there are more payday

lending stores in the United States than
there are McDonalds or Starbucks locations. This industry continues to prey on
Ohioans, and new evidence shows that
its reach is spreading throughout our
state.
For years, payday lenders have marketed their products as one-time, quick
fixes to help people get through difficult
times and financial emergencies. But
in reality, consumers are using payday
loans to cover basic expenses, like groceries, bills, and rent.
Last year, the Consumer Financial
Protection Bureau, or CFPB, found that
four out of five payday loans are rolled
over or renewed, trapping borrowers in
a cycle of debt. The average borrower
winds up paying more in fees than he
or she originally borrowed. According
to a multi-year investigation by the Pew
Charitable Trusts, on average, borrowers take out eight payday loans a year,
spending $520 on interest for a $375
loan.
Ohios General Assembly and Ohio
voters have both passed laws to limit the
triple-digit interest rates and deceptive
practices that these lenders use. But
payday lenders have stayed one step
ahead of the sheriff, skirting existing
consumer protections by reorganizing
their business practices to fall under a
different section of law. A new report
from the Center for Responsible Lending

attacks are now a normal part of life

and accepting refugees is the right
thing to do and is worth the risk.
We know from past experience
many of these refugees will immediately try to bring other family members to join them. What begins as a
group of four or five turns into a family of 30 as brothers, sisters, nieces,
cousins and grandparents move to be
close to them.
Sounds innocent enough but can
we be sure one of those nephews is
not filled with anger and rage and
wont be recruited to be part of a
terrorist cell? Anyone that questions
the refugee program is accused of
being politically incorrect. It has put
people on guard in politics, religion,
education, the work place and the
justice system.

shows how payday and car title lenders

have exploited loopholes in Ohio law to
continue to saddle borrowers with triple-digit interest rates.
And the payday lending industry continues to grow.
In Ohio, there are now 836 stores generating more than $500 million in predatory loan fees each year twice as much
as they collected in 2005, according to
the report. Car title lending accounts,
which also carry triple-digit interest
rates, make up $318 million of those
fees. This can be a serious problem for
borrowers who rely on their cars to get
to work.
This is why Congress created the
CFPB in 2010 to fill the gaps in
oversight of these shadowy financial
markets, and protect the 43 percent of
American households who have used
small-dollar loans like these at some
point in their lives.
In June, I sent a letter to the CFPB
urging it to enact the strongest consumer
protections possible to ensure that these
products are affordable and sustainable.
It has now been more than five months
since that letter, and its time for the
CFPB to act.
That means that the final rule should
include limits on costs, requirements
to ensure consumers can repay their
loans, products with longer repayment
terms, and the ability to pay down loan
principal.
Ohioans shouldnt be trapped in a
never-ending cycle of debt by predatory
loans.

I am grateful for that

Balancing compassion and caution

Tens of millions of immigrants
have entered America by walking
passed the words of poet Emma
Lazarus on the Statue of Liberty:
Give me your tired, your poor, your
huddled masses yearning to breathe
free.
Since 9/11, there have been
785,000 refugees resettled in the
United States. How do we reconcile
the hallmark that we treat everyone
the same while ensuring the safety of
the masses? Its a fair question.
Since the recent Islamic State
attacks around the world (in Paris,
France and Bamako, Mali), many
Americans are concerned about
accepting more refugees. President
Barack Obama believes we are overreacting to these events and says they
are not a threat to our security.
Our enemies have made it clear
they will infiltrate the U.S. and wreck
havoc on American values. They
want to destroy our way of life. In
Iran, they chant death to America.
People who worry about this are
accused of being Islamophobic or
xenophobic. Are they right or is this
time different?

Building a foundation for those in need

BY U.S. SENATOR
ROB PORTMAN
Earlier this fall, I worked
alongside fellow Ohioans with
Habitat for Humanity to build
a home for Air Force veteran,
Mark Jones, in Nelsonville,
Ohio. It was what is called a
Blitz Build, where you try to
complete 70 percent of the
home within 48 hours. With
the help of sponsors Rocky
Brands and OhioHealthand
nearly 200 enthusiastic volunteers who showed up for
the build we succeeded. It
was amazing to watch a house
appear out of a foundation that
fast. Habitat is impressive:
they do a lot of good for communities and families in Ohio
and around the country.
Habitat and its volunteers
dont just build houses for
families that need help; they
give people and families safe
and affordable places they help
build and can proudly call their
own. Homeowners work on
their house from the beginning, adding their own sweat
equity, and though the cost
of the house is less because of
volunteer labor and donated
materials, homeowners buy the
house with a Habitat mortgage.
At the end of the process, families who were renters, whose
paychecks were going mostly into monthly rent, become
homeowners able to build
some equity and financial sta-

Portman

bility.
While I was volunteering in
Nelsonville, I got the chance to
talk with the homeowner, Mark
Jones, as he joined in pounding nails and building his own
home. He was looking forward
to having his own home, and
grateful that so many caring
people had come out to support him to make his dream a
reality.
I have enjoyed working on
over a dozen Habitat builds
over the years, including a tradition of volunteering on my
birthday, which Ill do again
next month. Throughout my
time in public service, I have
sought to support Habitats
work, including by helping to
structure the Softwood Lumber
Grant program, which has
provided free lumber to over
19,000 Habitat homes.
Earlier this year, I authored

bipartisan legislation to protect

Habitat from unnecessary federal rules. It changes a recent
regulation under the DoddFrank banking law that would
negatively impact Habitat by
requiring that fee appraisers
must receive customary and
reasonable compensation for
their services. Many Habitat
affiliates have traditionally
accepted these appraisals on
homes on a donated basis. This
saves money so more homes
can be built and more families
can be helped. My change will
save money on every home
and has the potential to save
Habitat millions of dollars a
year. Good volunteer organizations like Habitat should not
be burdened by unnecessary
Washington red tape; my legislation will create certainty
and give more needy families
a chance to get a Habitat home.
Thanksgiving is about
spending time with friends and
family while giving thanks and
reflecting on our blessings. As
we count our blessing this year,
lets also think about others
who have fallen on hard times
and be thankful for groups like
Habitat who are there to help
families get back on their feet.
I will continue to support
Habitat and fight for my legislation so that more people
like fellow Ohioan Mark Jones
have the opportunity to own a
home and build a better life.

When it became nosed around about the city

that George was going to pull off a stunt on a
wager, a large crowd gathered along the canal
bank. All eyes were strained for the appearance
of the attorney-sportsman. Wild cheers went
up when he arrived, clad in old trousers and
old coat. He discarded the latter on entering
the water.
George did not show that he had undergone
any effort when he reached the bridge. He
declared, Its a shame to take the money.
One woman, standing on the bridge,
remarked, when he emerged from the water:
My! How big he is.

Delphos young men. The party consisted of
Paul Shimp, 20, Richard Lindeman, 19, Harvey
Roberts, 22, and Eugene Roberts, 20. The latter
was the most badly hurt. He was bruised and
lacerated about the face, arms, hips and in fact
the entire body. As a result of his injuries and
shock, he will be in bed, the attending physician says, for several days.
After overturning, the machine rights itself.
Eugene Roberts, in the front seat with the
driver, was the only one not thrown clear of
the machine. His left foot was caught by one
of the windshield supports, and his body was
dangling over the right side of the car, when
Richard Lindemann removed him from the
wrecked car.
All of the other occupants were dazed for several minutes after the accident, which occurred
directly in front of the Chas. Fostnaught place,
known as the old Pangle farm, on the Lincoln
highway.

Whats in a name
Expect spelling variations
of given names and surnames.
The correct name was
whatever each family member
used. Many years ago, your
ancestors names were commonly misspelled, or record
keepers came up with variations of the spelling of a persons name. There are several
reasons the names were misspelled. For instance, name
spellings werent standardized
several generations ago, so
many people spelled even their
own name in a variety of ways,
spelling was not as important
back then as it is now, foreign
accents were hard to understand, handwriting may have

by his three companions, and a physician was
summoned from Delphos. A.F. Lindemann,
a brother of Richard, was also called and he
rushed to the scene. He returned with Richard
and Paul Shimp. The physician brought the
other two young men in with him.
The young men had started out for a short
ride before the wreck. Paul turned into the
grass along the road to allow a machine going
in the opposite direction to pass him. As soon
as the wheels struck the wet grass they began
to skid. The driver, it is stated, lost his presence
of mind, and applied the brakes, which made a
wreck more certain.
The automobile, only recently purchased,
was almost completely wrecked. It was towed
to Mueller garage here. Many viewed it there,
all commenting upon the miraculous fact that
the young men escaped with their lives.
Paul Shimp is the son of T.W. Shimp,
former superintendent of schools in Delphos,
now secretary and general manager of the Jay
County Trust Co. of Portland.

First Main Line

Steam R.R. To Use
Electric Traction
The first main line steam railroad in this
country to make use of electric traction was the
Baltimore & Ohio railroad, which as far back
as 1895, built some powerful 100 ton electric
locomotives for hauling its trains through the
belt line tunnel at Baltimore.
By far, the most ambitious attempt to apply
electric traction on a large scale was the electrification of the terminal and suburban lines
on two of the most important railroads in the
U.S., namely the New York Central and the
New York, New Haven & Hartford railroads.
Each of these is a four-track road and each
handles an extremely heavy service. The New
York Central is operated on the direct-current
system, and New Haven road is by the alternating system.

been sloppy, the indexer was

in a hurry, or a number of other
factors could have played a
role in this spelling confusion.
Thus, the question is not necessarily finding one correct
spelling but finding the correct
ancestors.
Records we use for research
are mostly church records,
civil records, wills and census
records. These were usually
written by a non-family member a clergyman, census
enumerator, town or county
clerk. The recorders may have
thought they knew best how
to spell a name and did not
even bother to ask. The illiterate farmer would not presume
to correct an educated minister
To figure out how the name
was spelled generations ago
look for original records on
which ancestors wrote their
own names; if they were literate, papers of this kind are often
still within the family. Look for
spelling variations in indexes
and records as you research.
Collect copies of a variety of
records that are as close as possible to the original, rather than

published transcriptions and

abstracts. From such records
that were contemporary with
the ancestors, you may find a
consensus on what the family
considered the name to be or
how they may have pronounced
it. Remember; different relatives may have used different
spellings. As long as you have
other matching information
(right given names, times,
places, relationships or other
details), you can usually determine which records pertained
to your family, regardless of the
spelling of the surname.
Example of spelling variation of Rahrig. The baptism records of the children
of Philip and Maria Anna
(Myers) Rahrig, from the
church records in Seneca
County, contained these variations. Rerig, Frerich, Rarick,
Rorick and Rerich. Because
his first name, Phillip, and his
wifes name Maria Anna Myer
(or some variasion of Myers)
always appeared on the record
I knew I had the right record
no matter how the name was
spelled
