Objective:
The Automation Engineer position provides technical expertise for programming and maintaining
the DCS batch automation and SIS safety systems and process for the Nalco Eastern Hemisphere
Core Plant (EHCP) project located on Jurong Island, and potentially other APAC (Asia Pacific)
countries. This position will oversee the maintenance and continuous improvements of the DCS and
SIS programming for EHCP plant. The position will also be responsible for designing the controls
interfaces and overseeing the proper functionality of the controls for the plant.
Job Description:
This position will be physically located in the Nalco plant on Jurong Island. The position requires
strong analytical skills and engineering technical background in addition to a thorough
understanding of DCS hierarchy and programming. The successful candidate should also be able to
have a basic understanding of electrical and instrumentation.

The successful candidate must be able to:


Adhere to all Nalco policies, with emphasis on high safety standards using good engineering
practices
Work as team and reports directly to the EHCP maintenance department
Oversee development of the Continuous Database (DCS) Distributed Control System and SIS Safety
Instrumented System; working with the DCS Vendor
Document the DCS and SIS system design and manage changes to the controls system
Develop and implement process controls and control improvements
Develop and implement safety controls in the SIS system
Develop, implement, and maintain the automated batch process programs in the DCS
Implement formula and recipe changes in the DCS
Maintain the DCS recipes and formulae in compliance with the SAP recipes and formulae
Develop, update, modify, change, and maintain the DCS graphic displays
Recommend, evaluate, and implement process improvements
Troubleshoot DCS equipment failures as required and develop solutions
Develop plant operational and maintenance procedures related to DCS interfaces
Update plant DCS procedures as required
Interface with SAP (or equivalent) for product formulation, batch standards, and manufacturing
procedures

Look for productivity opportunities to improve processes in the field


Prepare control philosophies, and Loop Sheets for various processes in the plant by creating or
making changes to P&ID's, PFD's, etc...
Train plant operators on DCS operations
Provide updates (written and verbal) to the Technical / Engineering manager as required
Work with local SH&E government bodies to comply with applicable local laws and requirements
Conduct Root cause investigations of process and safety incidents
Participate in customer or vendor meetings
Assist with plant wide audits and implement upgrades

EHCP Project Support:


Provide process controls engineering and technical support for the EHCP project
Work with local engineering firm, the DCS Vendor and construction firms to manage all aspects of
programming design and installation, schedules, quality assurance, safety, and cost control, and
startup
Document the DCS and SIS system design and manage changes to the controls system
Provide start-up DCS training and documentation and assistance
Provide field / construction management support for the DCS and SIS systems for the EHCP project
Participates in Nalco/contractor meetings and resolves programming and other project issues
Ensures effective communication between Nalco and any third party contractors
Communicates Nalco requirements to third party EPC companies, identifying and addressing design
parameters and engineering problems and ensuring solutions are implemented
Coordinates and checks engineering deliverables from third party engineering companies
Manages change orders to the original design

Qualifications:

The successful candidate shall have the following qualifications:


B.S. degree in Chemical Engineering or Electrical Engineering
A minimum of 2 years of previous chemical plant DCS and PLC hardware and programming
engineering experience in a petro-chemical industry is required; candidates without experience are
welcome to apply
Preferably experience with Emerson DCS systems with batch interfacing.

Strong communication (verbal & written) and presentation skills


Fluent written and spoken communication skills in the English language
Strong problem-solving skills
Understanding of engineering and design principles
Ability to read, understand, and create engineering diagrams such as P&ID's, PFD's, loop diagrams,
isometric drawings, and others
Capable of performing loop checks to verify proper instrument and controls operations
Understanding of batch manufacturing processes is a plus
Previous SAP experience is a plus Systems, Applications, Products
Ability to work with other disciplines (process and project engineering, plant maintenance) within
Nalco
Excellent math, science, and computer skills required
Strong organizational skills
Ability to work independently within budgets and to deadlines
