One factory F 1 produces 1000 articles, 20 of

them defective products, second factory F2
produces 4000 articles, 40 of them being
defective and third factory F3 produces 5000
articles, 50 of them being defective. All these
articles are put in one stock pile. One of them
is chosen and is found to be defective. What
is the probability that it is from factory F1?
The contents of 3 bags are :
Bag 1 :

1 White, 3 Red, 2 Black balls :

Bag 2 :

3 White, 1 Red, 1 Black balls :

Bag 3 :

3 White, 3 Red, 3 Black balls :

Two balls are chosen from a randomly

selected bag. If the balls are 1 White and 1
Red, what is the probability that they come
from Bag 2 ?
(e) If the probability that a communication
system will have high fidelity is 0.81 and
the probability that it will have high fidelity
and high selectivity is 0.18, what is the
probability that a system with high fidelity
will also have high selectivity ?

the responsibilities of manager of the new
set up. What is the probability that

(a) If the probability of defective cotter pins from

a manufacturing unit is 2% in a box of 200
cotter pins, find the probability that :
exactly 4 pins are defective.
more than 3 pins are defective.
(b) A machine is producing a large number of
bolts. In a box of these bolts, 95% are within
the permissible limits with respect to
diameter. Seven bolts are drawn at random
from the box. Determine the probability
that :
two, and
more than or equal to two of the seven
bolts are not within the permissible
limits with respect to diameter.
(c) If the amount of cosmic radiations to which
a person gets exposed while flying across a
specific continent is a normal random
variable with mean 4.35 units and standard
deviation 0.59 units, find the probabilities
that the amount of exposure during such a
flight is :
between 4.00 and 5.00 units and
at least 5.50 units.

A dice is thrown 9000 times and a throw of

3 or 4 is observed 3240 times. Can the dice
be regarded as unbiased ? Also find the
limits between which the probability of a
throw of 3 or 4 is most likely to lie.
Long-term data base indicates that 5% of
the components produced at a certain
manufacturing facility are defective. A
training programme for the workforce
employed has been conducted with the aim
to reduce the percentage of defective
produced. After this if a random sample of
500 items consists of 16 defectives, can we
conclude that training was effective ?
(c) The mean weekly sales of TVs of a particular
brand in company's showrooms was 14.4
TV per showroom. After announcing a few
incentives the mean weekly sales in 22 stores
for a typical brand increased to 15.4 with
standard deviation of 1.7 . Were the
incentives announced effective in boosting
the sale ? Justify your answer.
