The Classical Composers poster includes over 950 composers arranged chronologically and ranked in four groups according
to their critical and cultural importance. The four groups are represented by black type (rst rank), purple type (second rank),
grey type (third rank) and blue type (fourth rank). The poster runs chronologically from left to right, from the medieval period
through the twentieth century. From 1400 on, spacing is proportional (1/16" = one year), so that the rectangles enclosing rstand second-rank composers exactly correspond to their life spans and indicate precisely who lived when. Third- and fourthrank composers are ordered by year of birth and more or less alphabetically from top to bottom, and staggered to give a rough
indication of their life spans. Titles of most works appear in their original languages, with more popular compositions translated
for ease of identication. Wherever possible, dates of works indicate year of composition or completion (or rst performance
for operas), although in earlier periods the date often refers to the year of publication and the works cited are often collections
(e.g., Sacrae symphoniae or Il quarto libro de madrigali [The Fourth Book of Madrigals]). The rst country listed is the
composers place of birth; additional countries indicate where the composer was/is active. For simplicitys sake, countries are
generally identied by their modern names. The selection of contemporary composers continues to be a source of frustration,
as there simply is not enough space to include everyone who should be included. Moreover, the increasingly blurry line between
classical and other genres of music compounds the problem. Weve tried to include a representative sample that takes into
account popularity, critical recognition, variety of nationality and gender, as well as suggestions made by correspondents over the
years, and we again apologize to the many active composers who dont appear here.
