Introduction
BehaviourforLearning
Developingappropriatelearningbehavioursiskeytoalllearnerssuccess.Wesetthehighest
expectationsofbehaviourandbelievethatalllearnersatDartonCollegehavetherighttolearnand
allteacherstherighttoteach.
PastoralStructureandSupportSystems
TheCollegehasavariedandintensivesupportstructureinplacetoprovidehelpandadviceto
learners,regulatebehaviour,trackacademicachievementandpromoteemotionalandsocial
well-being.ProgressLeadersoverseethedaytodaymanagementofthebehaviourandsafetyof
learnersattheCollegeandwouldusuallybethefirstpointofcontactshouldaparentwishtoraise
anyissueorconcern.
RewardsandConsequences;
Ourexpectations,rewardsandconsequencessystemishighlyvisiblearoundschool.Weworkhard
toensurethattheseareconsistentlyappliedandthatthereisacultureacrossourschoolthatfosters
mutualrespect,wherelearnersmakingpositivechoicesandcontributionsarerecognisedand
receivepraiseandrewardbothfortheirachievementbutalsofortheireffort.
Weuseanextensiverangeofrewards:e.g.verbalpraise,achievementpoints,certificates,
postcards,letterssenthomeandrewardtrips.Learnersachievementpointsarerecordedintheir
plannerandarealsoavailableonlineandthroughtheSchoolGatewayApp.
Whenlearnersdontmaketherightchoicesthereisaclearlyoutlinedconsequencesystem.These
includeaquietword,detentions(includingafterschool)reportsystems,internalexclusionsand
isolations,fixed-periodexternalexclusionsandinextremecasesreferraltoalternativeeducation
provision.
Wealsorecognisethatsomelearnersmayrequireadditionalsupportandwehaveastrongpastoral
supportteamwhocanguideandsupportlearnerstomakemorepositivechoices.
Strongpartnershipworkingwithparentsiscriticalinensuringweestablishthehighestpossible
standardsofbehaviour.
Responsibilities
CollegeStaff

SEN/Dandtheneedsofvulnerablechildrenofferingsupportasappropriate.
Totakeallreasonablemeasurestoprotectthesafetyandwellbeingofstaffandlearnersincluding
preventingallformsofbullyinganddealingeffectivelywithreportsandcomplaintsaboutbullying.
Topromotepositivebehaviourthroughactivedevelopmentoflearnerssocial,emotionaland
behaviouralskills.
Tokeepparentsinformedoftheirchildsbehaviourgoodaswellasbad,useappropriatemethods
ofengagingthemand,wherenecessary,supporttheminmeetingtheirparentalresponsibilities.
Toworkwithotheragenciestopromotecommunitycohesionandsafety.
TomakealternativeprovisionfromdaysixforFixedPeriodexcludedlearnersand,whereappropriate

CollegeUniform
Learners at Darton College are expected to be smartly dressed and in schooluniform. We believe
thatthisfostersouridentityasalearningcommunityandareadinessforlearning.

Itisexpectedthatalllearnerswillhaveasuitablebagtocarrybooksandequipmenteveryday.
Parentsareaskedtosupportcollegepoliciesonuniformandappearance.
Boys
Plainblacktrousersshouldbeworn(jeansorchinosarenotallowed).Trousersshouldnotbewornon
thehip.
Weacknowledgethereissometimesconfusionabouttheappropriatenessofcertaintrousers,If
unsureaboutthesuitability,pleasecheckthepockets90%ofapprovedtrousershavepocketsonthe
inside,ifthepocketsarestitchedontotheoutsideofthetrousers,theyarenotapproved.

Pleasedonotallowyourchildtohaveanewpiercingdoneclosetothestartofaschoolterm;wewill
notmakeallowancesforrecentpiercings.
Aclearretainingpipesimilartofishingwirecanbeusedtokeepthepiercingopen,howeverthismust

Consequences
Ifbehaviourishavinganegativeeffectontheteachingandlearningorisinfringingonthecolleges
inclusionphilosophy,learnerscanexpectthefollowingconsequencesandprocessestotakeplace.
Allstaffwillfollowtheconsequencespathway;thisisaconsistentsystemthatenablesstaffand
learnerstounderstandtheprocessofbehaviourmanagementandtakeownershipoftheescalation
ofsituationsfromminorincidentstomoreserioussituations.

Thedailyreportsystemisaimedattargetedlearnersfromwhomweexpectparticularstandardsto
beupheldthroughoutthecollegeday.Thisisachievedbysettingindividualtargets.Thedailyreport
systemalsogiveslearnersconcernedtheopportunitytobreakthecycleofdisruptionbygivingthem
anexcusetochangeinlightofpeerpressureorpeerexpectation.Parentsarealsokeptinformed
and,asaresult,canplayamajorroleinmodifyingpatternsofbehaviour.
Learnersplacedondailyreportwillbeexpectedtocontinueforaminimumoftwoweeks.
Detention
GovernmentCircular10/99AnnexC
Detentionisoneoftheconsequencesschoolscanuseagainstbadbehaviour.TheEducationAct
1997givesschoolsthelegalbackingtodetainlearnersaftertheendoftheschoolsessionon
disciplinarygrounds.
Thelawsafeguardschildrensandparentslegitimaterightsandensuresreasonablelimitson
detentionforchildrenwhomisbehave.Detentionsmustbereasonableandproportionatetothe
offenceandonlybeimposedbyateacherormemberofsupportstaffauthorisedtodoso.Staff
shouldtakeaccountof:

Whethertheparentcanreasonablyarrangeforachildtogethomefromcollegeafterthedetention.
Theconsequencespathwayclearlyindicatestostaff,learnersandparents/carerswhendetention

consent,butgenerallythecollegewillprovide24hoursnoticeofallafterschooldetentions.

Seclusion
Adecisionmaybetakentoputalearnerinseclusionforadayornumberofdaysifother
consequenceshavefailedtobeeffectiveorbehaviourhasbeensignificantlydisruptivetothe
learningofothers.ThedecisiontoplacelearnersinseclusionwillbemadebytheAssistantPrincipal
withresponsibilityforbehaviourandsafeguarding.
Whenissuedwithadayinseclusionparents/carerswillbeinformedofthisbytelephonebythe
YearGroupProgressLeaderorthelinkmemberofthePastoralTeam.
Exclusions
InternalExclusion
Internalexclusionseekstoavoidexternalexclusionbycreatinganin-collegedeterrent.Internal
exclusionisusedforsignificantinfringementsofthecollegesbehaviourpolicy.
ExternalExclusionfromCollege
Adecisiontoexcludealearnerfromcollegeisonlytakeninresponseto:
Seriousbreachesofthecollegesbehaviourpolicy.
Theprobabilitythatallowingalearnertoremainincollegewouldseriouslyharmtheeducationor
welfareofthelearnerconcerned,ortheeducationandwelfareofothersinthecollege.

exclusion.Intherareinstanceofalearnerbeingexcludedforafixedperiodofmorethanfivedays
thelearnerwillreceiveeducationalprovisionintheseclusionunitfromday6oftheirexclusion.
FixedTermExclusion
Learnersmayonlybeexcludedonafixedbasisfor45schooldaysduringtheacademicyear.Most
fixedtermexclusionswillbeforthreetofivedays.Exclusionscanallowtimetoaddressthelearners
problemsand,insomecases,considerotherarrangementsforhis/hereducation.Examplesof
behaviourforwhichlearnersmayreceivefixedtermexclusionsareincludedonthefollowingpages.
Followingafixedtermexclusionare-admissionmeetinginvolvingthelearner,parent/carer,Assistant
Principal(B&S)andthePrincipalwillusuallytakeplaceonthedayprecedingre-admission.The
meetingwillreviewthereasonsfortheexclusionandconsidertheneedforinterventiontosupport
thelearnersbehaviour.
Permanent
Wherealearnerispermanentlyexcludedthearrangementforthelearnertoreceivefulltime
educationfromday6oftheexclusionistheresponsibilityofthelocalauthority.However,thecollege
workspro-activelywithothersecondaryschoolsintheauthority(throughmonthlyattendanceatthe
BehaviourandAttendancePanel)tomakealternativeprovisionforlearnersatriskofpermanent
exclusion.Permanentexclusionisonlyusedasalastresortandisusuallythefinalstepinthe
processofdealingwithdisciplinaryoffences.Permanentexclusionisanacknowledgementthatthe
learnerhastakenthemselvesbeyondthecareandcontrolofthecollege.However,thePrincipal
doeshavetherighttopermanentlyexcludeforaoneoffoffencewhereaseriousbreachof
disciplinehasbeencommitted.
BehaviourOutsideofCollege
(includingoutsidethecollegeday)
ThebehaviouroflearnersoutsidecollegeonDartonbusiness(forexampleoncollegetrips,sports
fixturesorworkexperience)issubjecttothecollegesbehaviourpolicy.Anylearnerswhose
behaviourisdeemedinappropriatewhilstonatrip/educationalvisitwillbebannedfromfurthervisits
inthefuture(thelengthofwhichwillbedecidedbythecollege).Likewiselearnersonpastoralreports
orwithexcessivebehaviourpointswillnotbepermittedonvisitsoutsideofcollege.Learnerswillbe
madeawareofthisatthestarteachterm.Forbehaviouroutsidecollege,butnotoncollegebusiness
(e.g.outsidethecollegegates)thecollegemayapplyitsbehaviourpolicywherethereisaclearlink
betweenthebehaviourandmaintaininggoodbehaviouranddisciplineamongthelearnerbodyasa
whole.Wherealearneriswearingauniformtheyareambassadorsforthecollege.
BehaviouronSchoolBuses
Poorbehaviouronschoolbuseshasbecomeaproblemforthemajorityofsecondaryschools.
At
DartonCollege,wearedeterminedtominimisethisproblem.Wehaveprefectsmonitoringbehaviour
onthebusesandareconstantlystrivingtodevelopananti-bullyingcommunitywherelearners
embraceatellingculture(pleaserefertoAnti-BullyingPolicy).Allcollegeconsequenceswillapplyto
poorbehaviouronthebuses,includingexclusion.Severeorpersistentpoorbehaviourislikelyto

resultinthelearnerbeingbannedfromschoolbusesforaperioddeterminedbythecollege.Should
thissituationarise,parents/carerswillbecontactedbytheappropriateYeargroupProgressLeader.
Litter
Weworkhardtomakesureourcollegeiscleanandsafe.Weexpectlearnerstorespectthecollege
environmentandmakesurealllitterisputinabin.Learnersseendroppinglitterwillbesubjectto
consequences.Anylearner,overtheageof14,whopersistentlyoffendsmaybereferredtothelocal
EnvironmentalEnforcementOfficer.Underlegislationintroducedin2005undertheClean
NeighbourhoodandEnvironmentActpeopleguiltyofdroppinglittercouldbeissuedwithafineora
stipulatedtimeofcommunityservice.
MisuseofDrugs
Themisuseofdrugsbyschoolagechildrenhasbecomeanincreasingproblem,bothlocallyand
nationally.ADrugAwarenessmoduleispartofourSMSCprogrammeandthecollegebelievesthat
drug-awarenesseducationandafirmandconsistentpolicyfordealingwithlearnersinvolvedindrug
relatedincidentshavebecomeanecessity.
Headteachersandstaffauthorisedbythemhavea
statutorypower
tosearchpupilsortheir
possessions,withoutconsent,wheretheyhavereasonablegroundsforsuspectingthatthepupil
mayhaveaprohibiteditem.Prohibiteditemsare:

DrugsandtheLaw
TheMisuseofDrugsAct(1971)governsthemanufactureandsupplyofcontrolleddrugsfor
legitimatemedicaluse.It,therefore,createsoffencesofunlawfulmanufacture,possessionand
supply.
DrugscontrolledundertheActareclassifiedaccordingtotoxiceffecti.e.harddrugs(heroin,cocaine
etc),softdrugs(cannabis).
Possessionofharddrugscanleadtoaprisonsentencemaximumpenaltiesaresevere.

Itisanoffencetoknowinglyallowanyoneonyourpremisestoproduce,sellorgiveillegaldrugs,even
iftheyonlyoffertosupplythedrug.
Ifanyoneisfoundinpossession,onyourpremises,ofwhatyouthinkisanillegaldrugyoushould
informthepoliceandhanditinwithoutdelay.
TheActallowsyoutotakepossessionofanillegaldrugtopreventsomeoneelsecommittingan
offenceprovidedyouhandittothepolice.
CollegeProcedures
Staffmust
always
referandsuspicionsconcerningmisuseofdrugstoaseniormemberofstaff.All
suchreportswillbeinvestigatedbytheAssistantPrincipal(BehaviourandSafeguarding).
Alllearnersfoundinpossessionofillegaldrugsorwhatisthoughtcouldbeanillegaldrug
must
be
reportedtoaseniormemberofstaff.
Inanycaseswheremisuseofdrugsissuspectedparentalinvolvementwillbenecessary.
Thepolicewillbeinvolvedin
all
casesofmisuseofdrugs.
Alllearnersinvolvedindrugrelatedincidents(includingsupplying)willbesubjecttoexclusion,which
couldbepermanent.
OffensiveWeapons
Learners
mustnot
bringintocollege,orcarryonthewaytoandfromcollege,anydangerousand/or
offensiveweapon.Thisincludesknives,gunsofanydescription(forexampleairpistols)oranyitem
thatthecollegeconsidersitspurposebeingtothreatenorcauseinjurytoalearneroradult,including
fireworks.Anylearnercaughtinpossessionofanysuchitem(whetherusedornot)willbeexcluded
andinmostinstancespermanently.learnerswillonlybesearchedwherethereisreasonable
justificationorconcernforthesafety/well-beingoftheindividualand/orotherlearnersandstaff.The
collegemayalsorefertheincidenttothepolice.
Smoking
DartonCollegehasanosmokingpolicyforthewholeofthecollegesite
Itiswidelyacceptedthatsmokingisamajorcauseofseveralpotentiallyfataldiseases.Itisalso
widelyacceptedthatthelargemajorityofsmokersbeginthesmokinghabitwhileofschoolage.At

Bullying
Darton College is committed to working with learners andparentstoprovidealearningenvironment
that is secure andsupportive so that all individuals candevelop academicallyandsociallyfreefrom
fear of ridicule, harassment or physical threat. Weaimtocreateanenvironmentwhereallmembers
of the college community feel safe, respected and valued. All children have an absoluteright to be
protected from others who may wish to harm, degrade or abuse them. Bullying of any kind is
unacceptable at our college. Bullying may be verbal, physical or psychological. In fact any action
which makes a child feel uncomfortable, insecure or threatened may be defined as bullying. The
college disapproves of bullying in all its forms and considers it a most serious offence. As such, we
have a separate policy that explains our approach and consequences in greater detail (this can be
viewedonthecollegewebsiteorbemadeavailabletoparents/carersinschooluponrequest).
Assault
SexualAssault
Thecollegewillnottolerateanyactsofsexualabuseorsexualassault.Parents/carerswillbe
involvedinallsuchcases,whichmayalsobereferredtothepoliceandotheroutsideagencies,for
exampleSocialServices(ChildProtection).Theexclusionprocedureswillbeinitiatedinallsuch
cases.Considerationwillbegivenforpermanentlyexcludinganylearnerresponsibleforcarryingout
suchanassault.
SexualHarassment

Anycasesofsexualharassmentorallegedsexualharassmentwillbeinvestigatedthoroughly.
All
learnersinvolvedinsexualharassmentwillbesubjecttoseriousconsequenceswhichmayinclude
exclusionandallprovenincidentswillnecessitateparentalinvolvement.
PhysicalAssault
DartonCollegewillnotcondoneanyformofphysicalassaultforanyreasonandwhenassaultsoccur
thelearnersconcernedwillalwaysbesubjecttoseriousconsequences.Parents/carerswillbe
involvedinallsuchcases,whichmayalsobereferredtothepolice.Pastoralandseniormembersof
staffwilluseCCTVfootagetoinvestigateincidentsoccurringwithinthecollegegroundsandonthe
schoolbuses.
AbuseofStaff
Anyabuseofstaffwillnotbetolerated.Alllearnerswho
verballyabuseand/orthreaten
staffwillbe
subjecttoseriousconsequencesandallreportedincidentswillnecessitateparental/carer
involvement.
CollegeProceduresfordealingwithassault,harassmentandabuse
All
casesofharassment,assaultorabusewillberecordedonthelearner(s)individualfile(s)andthe
collegesbullyingtracker.
Thevictim(s)andperpetratorswillbeaskedtorecordeventsinwriting.
All
casesofsexualharassment,assaultorabusewillbedealtwithbyaseniormemberofstaff.
Supportwillbeprovidedforthevictimsofsexualharassment,assaultorverbalabuse.
Parentalcomplaintswillalwaysbeinvestigatedandin-collegeinterviewsarrangedwhenever
possible,involvingtheSaferSchoolsPoliceOfficer.
Perpetratorswillbesubjecttoseriousconsequences,rangingfromaninternalexclusiontoa
permanentexclusiondependentupontheseverityoftheoffence.
Racism
Thecollegeisdeterminedtoeliminateracialdiscrimination,racialharassmentoranyotherformof
racistbehaviourfromtheinstitution.Inthecaseofallformsofracistbehaviourwherelearnersare
victimstheformalproceduresofthecollegewillbestrictlyadheredtoandallcasesofracist
behaviourorallegedracistbehaviourwillbeinvestigatedthoroughly.Alllearnersinvolvedinany
formofracistbehaviourwillbesubjecttoseriousconsequencesandallprovenincidentswill
necessitateparentalinvolvement.

Theft
Theftofproperty,eitherbelongingtoDartonCollegeortootherlearnersorstaffwillnotbetolerated.
Inanyprovencasesoftheftseriousconsequenceswillapply,withaformofexclusiontheprobable
outcome.Allincidencesoftheftwillberecordedandallcasesofreportedtheftwillbeinvestigated
thoroughlybyProgressLeaders.Parents/carersofboththeperpetratorandthevictimwillbe
informed.Outsideagencies(suchasthepolice)willbeinvolvedifappropriateandininstanceswhere
thevictimsoftheftorparentsofvictimsinvolvethepolice,thecollegewillco-operatefullyinany
investigation.
Vandalism/Damage

earnersandstaffatthecollegearefortunatetoworkandlearninstateoftheartfacilitiesthatare
secondtonone.Vandalismorcausingdamagetopropertywillnotbetoleratedandactsofwilful
