Tan Sri Dato Haji Muhyiddin Mohd Yassin
Malaysia is now paving its way to become a high income nation. Higher education institutions play an
imperative role in nurturing talents and developing quality human capital to ensure that we are set in
our path of becoming a developed country by 2020.
Our graduates are our future.
They are the ones who will be one of the major strengths behind Malaysias economic transformation
quality human capital. In order to persistently stimulate the nations growth and development,
academia and industry leaders must work hand-in-hand to ensure our graduates are well equipped
with cutting-edge skills and fundamental knowledge that will allow them to make immediate
contributions when they join the workforce.
I commend UCSI University for establishing its very own Co-Operative Education Placement Programme
(Co-Op). The partnership between academia and industry has created opportunities for these students
to learn in an environment where they will be exposed to real-life working experiences. This, without a
doubt, will enhance these graduates employability and at the same time strengthen the strategic
relations between industry leaders and academia, which are strongly advocated in the National Higher
Education Strategic Plan (PSPTN).
I understand that this year is the 10th year anniversary of the existence of UCSI Universitys Co-Op
programme. Based on the report that was generated; I saw that 99% of the employers registered under
this programme were very pleased with the students performance during their Co-Op placement at
their respective companies. This further demonstrates the effectiveness of industrial placement as an
avenue for students to cultivate the required skills to prepare them for the real world. For that, I would
like to express my heartiest congratulations to UCSI University for its commitment and determination in
empowering our talents for the benefit of our nation.

As the Co-operative Education Placement Programme (Co-Op) enters its 10th year, we reflect on a
decade of excellence one that placed thousands of UCSI University students at the worlds leading
companies. Co-Op was designed to equip students with invaluable industry exposure while they are still
studying. Im happy to note that it has surpassed expectations on every count. And if UCSIs greatest
strength is its great relationship with the industry, Co-Op made it all possible.
The results speak for themselves. A recent tracer study conducted by the Malaysian Ministry of
Education and Higher Learning rates UCSI as one of the top two Malaysian universities in the area of
graduate employability. With a score of 81.4%, UCSI is ranked above all the leading private universities
and foreign branch campuses in Malaysia. And while open distance learning universities and a niche
medical school were ranked higher, their scores are contingent to a number of factors. Working adults
make up the bulk of an open universitys student population, contributing to the near perfect scores,
while doctors are never unemployed.
This study which focused on effective work placement of university students within six months of
graduation and other milestones of years past reflect the transformational element of Co-Op, not only
for UCSI but for the Malaysian higher education landscape. When Co-Op was first launched, it was the
only programme of its kind in Asia that required students to undergo at least two months of internship
each year. This was unheard of at the time and even policy makers were sceptical. However, the results
and the job-readiness of UCSI graduates changed opinions and the rest is history. Others took notice of
Co-Ops success and today, every serious university in Malaysia has a work placement component in
place.
The magnitude of change is best reflected by the numbers. Co-Op started with 30 students and 21
participating companies that required some convincing. Today, UCSI has placed more than 16,000
students at 1,806 companies globally. Overseas internships are also becoming more prevalent. UCSI
students have enjoyed stints at renowned establishments in Japan, Hong Kong, China and Singapore,
among others, and the University constantly seeks to expand its global network to provide students with
avenues to shine. With more developments in the pipeline, Co-Op stands out for its game-changing role
in addressing the industrys human capital needs.
In retrospect, the objective of Co-Op was to equip UCSI students with the skills and confidence to chart
a promising career trajectory. It achieved a snowball effect we can truly be proud of. And while Co-Op
has certainly made an impact, we are under no illusions that its journey has only just begun. Heres to the
next 10 years. Watch this space.

As a Praxis University, - one that emphasises on the application of theory to practice - UCSI is steadfast
in its pursuit to nurture students through enriching their learning experience. This includes offering
high-quality curriculum within a supportive environment, surrounded by well-equipped infrastructure
and providing Co-Op engagements with highly regarded and outstanding industry players to prepare
them for the real world.
With this foresight, the university pioneered its very own Co-Operative Education Placement Programme
(Co-Op), the first in the South East Asian region. Ten years on, the programme has benefited thousands
of UCSI graduates and helped the University carve a strong reputation among top industry players.
Many of these go on to offer our Co-Op students permanent employment upon graduation. In 2005, 80
% of Co-Op partners indicated that they would hire our students and this number grew to 94%.
Over the years, this programme has magnificently provided students with an opportunity for them to
build and sharpen important traits and skills they need to be successful in their careers, at the same time
expanding and strengthening the relationship between university and the industry; building possibilities
for future collaborations that can benefit both parties.
In todays era of information-driven economy, graduates are expected to not only be industry ready,
but also to possess knowledge beyond the boundaries of language and culture. With its 10-year
experience under its belt, I am confident that the Co-Operative Education & Career Services (CECS)
department can take the programme to another level of excellence through collaborations with
international industry partners. By establishing international partnerships, it will increase levels of
exposure, understanding and expertise of our graduates and therefore be the ultimate gateway for the
future generations of Malaysia towards transforming the nation.
I convey my best wishes to the team who has driven this programme to become what it is today. This
decennial milestone is the result of continuous hard work and service in ensuring students acquire the
best experience while studying here in UCSI University. Let us persevere with an unwavering commitment
to shape and mould our future graduates to achieve their best potential.
Go beyond. Be profound; Make the difference.

HISTORY,
MISSION &
FUTURE PLAN
CO-OP
BUILT TO LAST
Every university has a unique value proposition. For some, its the allure of history. For
others, notable achievements in more recent times. At UCSI University, that reason to
believe is anchored on a 28-year record of industrial excellence that is second to
none.
Not many know this but UCSI is actually the first university in Asia that required
students to undergo internship at the end of each academic year. The rationale: To
equip students with a strong grasp of fundamental workplace practices and the
underlying assumptions that make them work. With greater access to higher
education, competition in the workforce would only intensify and UCSI wanted its
graduates to hit the ground running.
This led to the launch of UCSIs Co-Operative Placement programme - better known
as Co-Op - in 2004 that saw the University collaborating with multinational and local
companies in an unprecedented manner. Partnering with the right organisations was
vital and University staff frequently visited companies in the early days to assess
whether they would be a good fit. These tie-ups secured invaluable internship
opportunities for students while employers were able to identify potential talents who
could take their organisations forward.
While the win-win nature of such partnerships is rather obvious today, things were not
exactly rosy in the early days. A separation between academia and work existed at
the time and the powers-that-be were a tad skeptical with the idea of regular
student internships. Additionally, companies were not familiar with the concept and
only 21 signed up as Co-Op partners in 2004. However, positive feedback from
employers, students and parents soon put any lingering fears to rest. UCSI graduates
were highly sought after in the industry, the list of Co-Op partners grew exponentially
and other education providers began rolling out similar initiatives. The Malaysian
higher education landscape underwent a seismic shift in the right direction and
Co-Op was its watershed.
Today, Co-Op continues growing from strength to strength as it reaches its 10 year
journey. In the year 2013, more than 1,800 companies have participated in the
programme. This marks a stark contrast to the original 21 companies in 2004 and UCSI
records an average increase of 10% in the number of Co-Op partners each year.
UCSI UNIVERSITY
CO-OPERATIVE EDUCATION REPORT 2013

The Co-Op Education and Career Services Department has placed more than
10,000 students at prominent companies since 2003 and that figure will only rise. Their
home-grown online portal has been keeping track of job vacancies and has been a
platform to direct students to companies that would pass as ideal fits.
With the success of Co-Op First Tier and Second Tier, Co-Op stays ahead with the
launch of its Third Tier Premier Co-Op Partner Apprenticeship Programme, where UCSI
University collaborates with the industrys biggest brands that promise to provide the
best hands-on experience to the best students.
This game-changing programme is coupled with initiatives to collaborate with
international industry partners, which will lead to enormous growth of the students
learning experience and further solidify the Universitys reputation as a regional hub
of educational excellence.
As a Praxis University that actively promotes the application of knowledge, UCSI is
pleased that the Co-Op programme has brought a transformational element to its
student experience. A true measure of any university rests in the success of its students
and UCSI graduates have certainly stood out in the industry. Every university has its
legacy. And if UCSI is synonymous with industrial relevance, the Co-Op programme is
the foundation on which this legacy is built.

I did my Co-Op programme at Chemidus Sdn Bhd which is a
simple plant with a simple process ow but set in a very
corrosive environment. The engineering challenges are to have
engineering improvements to ensure good corrosion protection
and reliability. Most of the work is done on solving problems and
the difculties of day to day operations.
My colleagues are friendly and passionate about work and I
learned that critical thinking and creative mindset is important
when solving engineering problems. During my time here, safety
is a main priority and we must always wear long pants, safety
shoes, helmet, gloves and a mask in the main production area.
For my juniors, it is important to note that there is very little public
transport in the companys future Pulau Indah plant so it would
be better to drive. The current Pandamaran plant is to be
decommissioned on June 2014.

Q1:It allows us to experience the real working environment and face the challenges that we would not be able
to experience during our university studies. Also, this gives us the chance to apply all the knowledge that
we learned during our university courses.
I felt challenged and signicant at the same time during the Co-Op placement, because I got to know many
experienced people in programming and we exchanged our opinions and knowledge on IT. Although it
was challenging, I am excited to work in this company and tried my best to solve and contribute more to the
company using my knowledge that I have learned in UCSI University.
Q2:From this work, I have learned a lot of things that I have not been able to cover in class. I had learned many
shortcut keys using Microsoft Visual Studio for programming. With all the shortcut keys, I can do my
programming tasks in an easier and faster way. At rst I was quite worried about the job that my supervisor
assigned to me because I do not have any knowledge of C# programming.
After giving me the job, my supervisor also gave me a set of notes on C# tutorials for me to revise. I found that
C# language is quite similar to the Java language that I learned in the university during my Year 1. This subject
has helped me a lot as C# language is the main language that the company uses for the system coding.
Microsoft SQL database is a storage software that is used by the system of the company. I have been trained
to use this database software for all systems. There are a lot of database checking tasks that was assign to me
daily as we need to do error checking for the database. A lot of statements needed to be checked and I am glad
that I had learned Database System in Year 2 and all the knowledge that I gain from this subject is very useful
for me to complete my job.

Q1:The Co-Op placement allowed me to gain insight into the real working situation in the food industry. Without
this programme, I wouldn't have the chance to observe closely the operations of a food factory before I have
completed my studies. By getting involved in the operations, I am able to better know the food industry. This
working experience is very useful for me to understand and discover my own potential and interests. I think
that this programme should be continued for my juniors to cultivate their interests in the respective elds and
to provide them a chance in self-discovery. This would be very important for them to pave a prospective
career path.
Q2:The training has enlightened me with a lot of hands-on experience and knowledge beyond the classroom. I was
required to provide assistance on day-to-day routines for new product development as well as for a project on
operation improvement.
At the application group department, tasks like writing laboratory instructions on ice cream heat shock and drip
test by weighing were new to me. I planned which equipment was needed for a heat shock cabinet to carry out
the test.
In addition, the 5S was a new element I experienced in my department which was also a new information to me.
I had done 5S in the warehouse and I did further reading on 5S to understand the importance of creating a
visual workplace, which made the work easier.
I was also always involved in documentations and data system. For example, I assisted in the HALAL
specications for all the raw materials through the online HALAL system. I also did a comparison between two
different types of whey derived powder and distinguished their nutrient information. I checked the ice creams
packaging to ensure the information is updated from time to time.
Furthermore, the Co-Op placement helped me sharpen my interpersonal skills. This placement had built up my
condence and self-esteem through the great experience and exposure at work. I have gained ample
knowledge that I can put to good use in my upcoming career journey.

CO-OP:
A DECADE
OF EXCELLENCE
As UCSI University's Co-Operative Education Placement Programme (Co-Op) enters its
10th year, students and staff can look back proudly on a purposeful journey of
opportunity and excellence.
Milestones provide an instance of recognition for universities and the good people
involved in a successful endeavour. It's like a meeting - and sharing - of lives. We had this
experience, we got this far and our experiences made us who we are today.
For UCSI University, one significant milestone is 10 years of Co-Op the definitive industry
placement programme that revolutionised formal internships in Malaysia and the region.
Built on the bedrock of trust and two-way communication, Co-Op sees UCSI partnering
with some of the world's best companies to secure invaluable internships for students
each academic year. With industry experience to complement the mastery of theory
and knowledge, UCSI became to go-to place for work-ready graduates.
From leading global conglomerates to SMEs, doors opened for UCSI students and it
became something of a norm for them to receive job offers even before graduation.
Encouraged, the University continuously expanded its network of industry partners so
students could expand theirs.
The results are quite astounding.
A recent tracer study by the Malaysian Ministry of Education rated UCSI as one of the top
two* universities in Malaysia in the area of graduate employability. With a score of 81.4%,
UCSI is ranked far above other leading private universities. In fact, UCSI outscored every
foreign branch campus in Malaysia! Focusing on the effective work placement of
university students within six months of graduation, the study vindicates the long march
that made Co-Op what it is today.
Note: As far as comprehensive universities are concerned, UCSI is in the top two. Working adults make up the bulk of the student population
at open distance learning universities, contributing to their near perfect scores. And niche medical schools only have one area of focus.

To remain at the epicenter of things, UCSI continually improved its Co-Op model in myriad
ways. The increased scale of operation is probably the most noticeable difference. In
2014, the University placed 3,692 students at 1,806 companies worldwide. These include a
number of overseas internships in countries like Japan, Hong Kong and Singapore
another interesting development that has become a mainstay in the UCSI blueprint.
Enhanced partnerships with leading brands are also signed, paving the way for greater
student involvement, smarter mentoring and greater employment opportunities. Over the
years, a number of UCSI students have enjoyed the privilege of making important
scientific contributions at leading research institutes. And the number of actuarial science
students who receive job offers during their internship is encouraging to say the least.
The success of the Co-Op programme is further enshrined by the launch of UCSI's Premier
Co-Op Partnership Award a game-changing apprenticeship programme that provides
the best academic experience to the best students. Apart from financial aid in the form
of full scholarships, the Award provides recipients with invaluable apprenticeships at the
world's leading companies and customised mentorship programmes to prepare them for
their next giant leap.
Award recipients will work closely with their sponsor during their apprenticeship, enjoying
work stints that are customised to suit their on-the-job progress and academic schedules.
Such in-depth exposure equips students with a thorough understanding of fundamental
operations, enabling them to make meaningful contributions at the workplace. Each
apprentice will also be assigned to a mentor who will monitor and manage their progress
in the company. At the end of this rite of passage, apprentices will receive job offers from
their sponsors.
With all these and more in the pipeline, UCSI celebrates a decade of excellence for
Co-Op. By bringing the best students and the best companies together, UCSI opens doors
as it works to provide smarter solutions for a smarter planet.

Firstly, I am pleased that the Co-Op students I received
from UCSI University were from the relevant industry,
which is Food Science & Nutrition. In our laboratory, the
Co-Op students are required to conduct experiments,
select the best methods and also perform instrument
validations.
I am happy that UCSI University Co-Op students are well
exposed to knowledge in nutrition, basic laboratory work,
HACCP requirements and GMP requirements. This
knowledge is benecial to them when they serve the food
industry companies during their Co-Op placement or upon
graduation.
SY Cheah
Engineer (SQE)
The UCSI University Co-Op student who was assigned to us
was generally independent and had a good level of
self-initiative, which impressed us.
It is unfortunate that many tertiary level students today are
laidback and ignorant, but we are excited and happy to see
the UCSI University student who interned with us was not
the average student, but exhibited much more positive
qualities.
Edna Lee
Director, Operations & Projects
Our experience so far is based on one UCSI University
student who applied for Co-Op placement in our
organisation. From this experience, we found that the
student had the right attitude but had to be trained further in
how to apply knowledge of Java programming learned in
the university in the workplace.

We fully support this programme. We feel that UCSI
University has provided a very good platform for the students
to learn, study, engage themselves and experience the real
working environment of this four-month Co-Op Placement
Programme. Our company provided training to enhance and
equip them with the necessary knowledge and experience
for their future.
Overall, they were good, independent, very hardworking and
responsible during their Co-Op Placement with us.

Elaine was a true asset to our department this summer. I
believe this opportunity gives your alumni a chance to
excise their leadership skills and develop transferable
skills that serve them well into the future as they pursue
professional goals.
Assisting in implementing our large-scale orientation
events in particular develops several key skills, all of which
Elaine excelled at: joining and becoming part of a team,
creative problem-solving under very stressful situations,
exibility and adaptability, working efciently with students
from 13 countries, and customer service.
I have also seen the increased self-condence of our
Co-Op student after successfully welcoming 400 students,
caring for them for three days, and then ensuring they
safely reach their destinations across the US. The logistics
can be formidable, but the skills gained will be useful for a
lifetime.
MH Cheng
Project Manager
It was the rst time EISB took Co-Op students from UCSI
University and we were happy with their performance for
the past four months. The Co-Op students showed their
initiative to gain knowledge and hands-on experience in
our industry, which is natural gas measurement.
Lastly, we hope that UCSI University will extend the Co-Op
placement duration to six months in the future.

NKF rst participated in the CoOp programme in end 2008 with the engagement of one Year 3 Co-Op student from the
Food Science & Nutrition faculty. In view of the positive contribution from this student, we decided to continue to
participate in this programme by engaging nine students in 2009 and subsequently two students in April 2010. During
the two to four months of Co-Op Placement, the students will gain exposure and hands-on experience of the public
education outreach programme of NKF, health exhibitions, data entry and telephone audit of participants who were
detected with abnormalities through the NKF LifeCheck Mobile Health Screening.
In the beginning of the Co-Op Placement, the students will undergo a one day induction course. The students will be
coached further on the job until they can handle the tasks condently and competently. The students also have the
opportunity to improve their interpersonal skills and communication skills when they interact with NKF staff and members
of the public. We trust that the Co-Op students do enjoy their Co-Op placement at NKF and we believe the experience
gained from the Co-Op placement at NKF will be benecial to their future endeavours.
This collaboration with UCSI University is indeed a win-win partnership. As a non-prot charitable organisation, we hope
that such collaborations can be continued to benet both parties as well as members of the public at large.

ALUMNI
THE FEEDBACK
Q1: In general, what do you think about the UCSI University
Q&A
Q3: What is your advice to the juniors who are preparing to enroll
in the UCSI University Co-Operative Education Placement
Programme?
Q1:My Co-op placement experiences in three different companies provided me vast opportunities to explore
jobs in both academia and the corporate world. Throughout my placement period, I have learned to deal
with people from diverse backgrounds. My soft skills, particularly communication skills were sharpened
through involvement in real work settings. Exposure in diverse work settings helped me to decide my
future career path as I managed to identify my strengths, weaknesses and area of interest.
Q2:Research and teaching skills. I was having my Co-op placement with an educational training company and a
tertiary education institution (Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia) during my rst and nal year of study. The Co-op
Education Placement Programme was a good platform for my exposure to see the role and responsibility of an
educator and a researcher during my university years. These experiences taught me fundamental research
skills as a postgraduate student, as well as other skills like communication, teamwork, and goal setting.
During my second year of Co-op placement in a multinational company, I was exposed to the corporate world.
The soft skills learned are useful not only in research work (organising information, liaising with different
organisation), but also in daily life (setting life goals, time management).
Q3:Be brave to try out different job options during your Co-op placement as it is a good platform for you to learn
and be exposed to new things.

I have gained different experiences from my Co-Op

learning how to write advertorials, dealing or liaising

magazine, and also choosing items for the magazines
photo shoots.
Attending events and launches of new stores were also
part of my job. Besides that, I got to meet celebrities

In just two months, I was exposed to a lot of special
and useful experiences at Early Steps Care Centre,
especially through lessons and activities which were
designed to develop skills in children (for example,
language and communication, relational and
behavioural, perception and cognition, gross and ne
motor skills, self-help and - last but not least - play and
imitation).
Early Steps Care Centres mission is to offer services
to people with learning difculties so that they may
achieve their full potential, and I felt blessed to
contribute my part in helping with some of the events
being organized for the children. At the same time, I
met many new people from different cultures, races
and religions among the parents, other Co-Op
students, staff and teachers.
I felt a sense of pride and accomplishment when
helping in all the events of the Centre. In addition, I
also felt an increased sense of responsibility and
independence in my approach to work. The UCSI

Co-Op FAQs
Question 1: What is Co-Op?
Question 2: Is it compulsory?
Yes, the Co-op component is compulsory for all UCSI University's degree and diploma programmes
(with the exception of Medicine, Pharmacy and Nursing degrees which have their own
clerkship/industrial training component).
The Co-op Placement Programme does not extend your study time for any undergraduate degree
or diploma programme even though UCSI University has included this extra two-month module (the
Co-op takes place two months immediately after the traditional two-month short semester).
The Co-op Placement Programme usually takes place annually in the months of
November-December. Only graduating students (i.e. students who have completed all the
academic modules in their degree programme but have not completed their Co-Op components)
may carry out their Co-Op placement commencing January, May and September annually.
No, you do not need to pay additional fees to participate in the Co-op Placement Programme.

ABOUT CECS
Yes. As students, you will appreciate that one of the anxieties you may face when undertaking the
present degree or diploma of your choice is whether in the face of constant future uncertainties in
the economy and the job market, you will be able to get a good job upon graduating.
Furthermore, sometimes there are concerns how practical and applicable was your theoretical
education programme in the real work world outside, and whether what you studied in the
classroom - or even the laboratory is relevant when you go out to work.
Even more, you may sometimes also ask what is it that will set you apart as a UCSI University graduate
in comparison to all the other graduates of the other universities (especially when you wish to be
more marketable and in demand upon graduating from UCSI University).
With the above considerations in mind, UCSI University unveils its Co-op component to set you apart
from all the other tertiary students in the country, thereby, giving you a huge advantage over other
graduates.
UCSI University will endeavour to only appoint employers within and beyond the Klang Valley as well
as Overseas. Some national or multi-national companies may have either out-station or off-shore
companies, which may be presented to students as options if students so choose to take it up.
Yes. UCSI University will endeavour to ensure that the Co-op objective of providing relevant and
appropriate industrial training pertinent to the discipline of the degree or diploma undertaken is met.
Yes. most if not all job placements will require at least one round of interviews with potential
employers. There will be a great deal of competition for placements in the more lucrative or
attractive companies, with potential employers reserving the right to interview and select student
interns accordingly.
Consequently, good academic scores, as well as a well-prepared interview process by the
student-candidates, will always stand them in good stead.
Question 11: Will UCSI place me in the company of my preference for Co-Op?
Yes. The employment process is highly competitive and factors such as academic performance,
skills, motivation, maturity, attitude, professional conduct, flexibility and performance potential, will
determine whether a student is offered employment or not.
Although every effort will be made by UCSI University to find the best fit work positions for students
enrolled in the different degree programmes, the openly competitive nature of the process means
that no guarantee of a student's first choice of employment can be made.

ABOUT CECS
Question 12: Can I choose a company that is not a UCSI Universitys Co-Op Partner
for my Co-Op?
UCSI University is willing to consider other companies deemed suitable for the students growth and
learning experience as long as the company is willing to accept him/her, and be subject to UCSI
Universitys teams and condition for Co-Op. Students may also recommend companies of their
interest, however these recommendations are to be made one month prior to the commencement
of the students Co-op component.
You will be assessed and graded on your performance of the Co-Op component by both your work
supervisor, as well as the members of your Faculty/Institute.
Occasionally, students, faculty, and the CECS staff will meet with students on an ad-hoc basis to
discuss areas of mutual concern as they affect the academic programme, the work programme,
work reports, regulations and procedures, etc.
Work report requirements vary by School and Department. Students must submit work reports
according to their School and/or Department requirements. Work report guidelines are available in
a variety of formats from the relevant Schools (e.g. online, hardcopy, e-mail, etc.)
Question 14: What if I fail the Co-Op Placement at the end of the two months?
You will be considered as having failed that particular component of your degree or diploma
requirements, and will need to repeat the component. You may or may not be allowed to progress
on to the following academic study year depending on the recommendations of the respective
Head of School.
There will also be options for the University Exam Board, the University Academic Board, as well as the
Head of School, to re-assess the reasons why you may have failed and re-evaluate your work
experience through further interviews, reports or investigations.
Thus, students are strongly advised to conduct themselves professionally at all times and to abide all
company policies and rulings, while performing their jobs to their best ability.
This list does not outline all the disciplinary actions that may be applied when UCSI University Co-op
policies or regulations or the employing company's procedures are violated. Disciplinary action is the
option of the University Academic Board and the relevant Head of School.
