The Deputy Prime Minister and Education

& Higher Education Minister I

Yang Berbahagia
Tan Sri Dato Haji Muhyiddin Mohd Yassin

Malaysia is now paving its way to become a high income nation. Higher education institutions play an
imperative role in nurturing talents and developing quality human capital to ensure that we are set in
our path of becoming a developed country by 2020.
Our graduates are our future.
They are the ones who will be one of the major strengths behind Malaysias economic transformation
quality human capital. In order to persistently stimulate the nations growth and development,
academia and industry leaders must work hand-in-hand to ensure our graduates are well equipped
with cutting-edge skills and fundamental knowledge that will allow them to make immediate
contributions when they join the workforce.
I commend UCSI University for establishing its very own Co-Operative Education Placement Programme
(Co-Op). The partnership between academia and industry has created opportunities for these students
to learn in an environment where they will be exposed to real-life working experiences. This, without a
doubt, will enhance these graduates employability and at the same time strengthen the strategic
relations between industry leaders and academia, which are strongly advocated in the National Higher
Education Strategic Plan (PSPTN).
I understand that this year is the 10th year anniversary of the existence of UCSI Universitys Co-Op
programme. Based on the report that was generated; I saw that 99% of the employers registered under
this programme were very pleased with the students performance during their Co-Op placement at
their respective companies. This further demonstrates the effectiveness of industrial placement as an
avenue for students to cultivate the required skills to prepare them for the real world. For that, I would
like to express my heartiest congratulations to UCSI University for its commitment and determination in
empowering our talents for the benefit of our nation.

The UCSI Group Chairman and Founder

Dato (Dr) Peter Ng

As the Co-operative Education Placement Programme (Co-Op) enters its 10th year, we reflect on a
decade of excellence one that placed thousands of UCSI University students at the worlds leading
companies. Co-Op was designed to equip students with invaluable industry exposure while they are still
studying. Im happy to note that it has surpassed expectations on every count. And if UCSIs greatest
strength is its great relationship with the industry, Co-Op made it all possible.
The results speak for themselves. A recent tracer study conducted by the Malaysian Ministry of
Education and Higher Learning rates UCSI as one of the top two Malaysian universities in the area of
graduate employability. With a score of 81.4%, UCSI is ranked above all the leading private universities
and foreign branch campuses in Malaysia. And while open distance learning universities and a niche
medical school were ranked higher, their scores are contingent to a number of factors. Working adults
make up the bulk of an open universitys student population, contributing to the near perfect scores,
while doctors are never unemployed.
This study which focused on effective work placement of university students within six months of
graduation and other milestones of years past reflect the transformational element of Co-Op, not only
for UCSI but for the Malaysian higher education landscape. When Co-Op was first launched, it was the
only programme of its kind in Asia that required students to undergo at least two months of internship
each year. This was unheard of at the time and even policy makers were sceptical. However, the results
and the job-readiness of UCSI graduates changed opinions and the rest is history. Others took notice of
Co-Ops success and today, every serious university in Malaysia has a work placement component in
place.
The magnitude of change is best reflected by the numbers. Co-Op started with 30 students and 21
participating companies that required some convincing. Today, UCSI has placed more than 16,000
students at 1,806 companies globally. Overseas internships are also becoming more prevalent. UCSI
students have enjoyed stints at renowned establishments in Japan, Hong Kong, China and Singapore,
among others, and the University constantly seeks to expand its global network to provide students with
avenues to shine. With more developments in the pipeline, Co-Op stands out for its game-changing role
in addressing the industrys human capital needs.
In retrospect, the objective of Co-Op was to equip UCSI students with the skills and confidence to chart
a promising career trajectory. It achieved a snowball effect we can truly be proud of. And while Co-Op
has certainly made an impact, we are under no illusions that its journey has only just begun. Heres to the
next 10 years. Watch this space.

The UCSI University Council Chairman

Yang Berbahagia
Tan Sri Dato Seri (Dr) Musa Mohamad

Assalamualaikum Warohmatullahi Wabarokatuh.

In the past years, we have seen Malaysias plans and efforts gain momentum to achieve one mission; to
transform the country into a high-income nation by 2020.
Following this mission, the role of higher education institutions today has also expanded, evolved and
gained even more prominence in nation-building. Our responsibility now is not only limited to providing
students with knowledge, but also to drive Malaysias human capital development. Ultimately, the aim
is to groom highly qualified graduates who are globally competitive and able to be a catalyst for the
growth of the nations economy.
In this, it is imperative that the future generation be not only book-smart but also able to hit the ground
running upon entering the workforce. UCSI Universitys Co-Operative Education Placement Programme
(Co-Op) plays a pivotal role by providing students with work opportunity and exposure to the working
environment. Through this programme, students are given a chance to familiarise themselves with the
intricacies of the industry, while at the same time build their confidence with the skills gained from
working under the wings of industry experts. This goes far in preparing them to perform and excel in their
role to not only meet the expectations of the nation but to exceed it.
It is important to note that this track record of excellence has been an integral part of a UCSI University
students education experience for the last decade. This year, during its 10th year anniversary the
Co-Op programme has placed 3,692 students at over 1,806 companies worldwide. I am very pleased
with the ever-growing number of our Co-Op partners who have given tireless support to the University,
simultaneously strengthening the relationship between the graduates and the industry.
As a Praxis University, closing the gap between industry and academia has always been our mission
and I would like to thank all our Co-Op partners for their support. The Co-Op programmes decade of
excellence would not have been possible without the backing of these industry leaders.
I would like to congratulate each and every student who has completed his/her Co-Op programme. I
hope through this programme, students will continue to gain valuable insights to kick-start their journeys
as working professionals and to maintain their dedication towards achieving excellence in their chosen
fields.
Thank you and Wassalamualaikum.

The Vice Chancellor & President

Senior Professor Dato Dr Khalid Yusoff

As a Praxis University, - one that emphasises on the application of theory to practice - UCSI is steadfast
in its pursuit to nurture students through enriching their learning experience. This includes offering
high-quality curriculum within a supportive environment, surrounded by well-equipped infrastructure
and providing Co-Op engagements with highly regarded and outstanding industry players to prepare
them for the real world.
With this foresight, the university pioneered its very own Co-Operative Education Placement Programme
(Co-Op), the first in the South East Asian region. Ten years on, the programme has benefited thousands
of UCSI graduates and helped the University carve a strong reputation among top industry players.
Many of these go on to offer our Co-Op students permanent employment upon graduation. In 2005, 80
% of Co-Op partners indicated that they would hire our students and this number grew to 94%.
Over the years, this programme has magnificently provided students with an opportunity for them to
build and sharpen important traits and skills they need to be successful in their careers, at the same time
expanding and strengthening the relationship between university and the industry; building possibilities
for future collaborations that can benefit both parties.
In todays era of information-driven economy, graduates are expected to not only be industry ready,
but also to possess knowledge beyond the boundaries of language and culture. With its 10-year
experience under its belt, I am confident that the Co-Operative Education & Career Services (CECS)
department can take the programme to another level of excellence through collaborations with
international industry partners. By establishing international partnerships, it will increase levels of
exposure, understanding and expertise of our graduates and therefore be the ultimate gateway for the
future generations of Malaysia towards transforming the nation.
I convey my best wishes to the team who has driven this programme to become what it is today. This
decennial milestone is the result of continuous hard work and service in ensuring students acquire the
best experience while studying here in UCSI University. Let us persevere with an unwavering commitment
to shape and mould our future graduates to achieve their best potential.
Go beyond. Be profound; Make the difference.

HISTORY,
MISSION &
FUTURE PLAN

HISTORY, MISSION & FUTURE PLAN

CO-OP

BUILT TO LAST
Every university has a unique value proposition. For some, its the allure of history. For
others, notable achievements in more recent times. At UCSI University, that reason to
believe is anchored on a 28-year record of industrial excellence that is second to
none.
Not many know this but UCSI is actually the first university in Asia that required
students to undergo internship at the end of each academic year. The rationale: To
equip students with a strong grasp of fundamental workplace practices and the
underlying assumptions that make them work. With greater access to higher
education, competition in the workforce would only intensify and UCSI wanted its
graduates to hit the ground running.
This led to the launch of UCSIs Co-Operative Placement programme - better known
as Co-Op - in 2004 that saw the University collaborating with multinational and local
companies in an unprecedented manner. Partnering with the right organisations was
vital and University staff frequently visited companies in the early days to assess
whether they would be a good fit. These tie-ups secured invaluable internship
opportunities for students while employers were able to identify potential talents who
could take their organisations forward.
While the win-win nature of such partnerships is rather obvious today, things were not
exactly rosy in the early days. A separation between academia and work existed at
the time and the powers-that-be were a tad skeptical with the idea of regular
student internships. Additionally, companies were not familiar with the concept and
only 21 signed up as Co-Op partners in 2004. However, positive feedback from
employers, students and parents soon put any lingering fears to rest. UCSI graduates
were highly sought after in the industry, the list of Co-Op partners grew exponentially
and other education providers began rolling out similar initiatives. The Malaysian
higher education landscape underwent a seismic shift in the right direction and
Co-Op was its watershed.
Today, Co-Op continues growing from strength to strength as it reaches its 10 year
journey. In the year 2013, more than 1,800 companies have participated in the
programme. This marks a stark contrast to the original 21 companies in 2004 and UCSI
records an average increase of 10% in the number of Co-Op partners each year.

UCSI UNIVERSITY
CO-OPERATIVE EDUCATION REPORT 2013

07

HISTORY, MISSION & FUTURE PLAN

The Co-Op Education and Career Services Department has placed more than
10,000 students at prominent companies since 2003 and that figure will only rise. Their
home-grown online portal has been keeping track of job vacancies and has been a
platform to direct students to companies that would pass as ideal fits.
With the success of Co-Op First Tier and Second Tier, Co-Op stays ahead with the
launch of its Third Tier Premier Co-Op Partner Apprenticeship Programme, where UCSI
University collaborates with the industrys biggest brands that promise to provide the
best hands-on experience to the best students.
This game-changing programme is coupled with initiatives to collaborate with
international industry partners, which will lead to enormous growth of the students
learning experience and further solidify the Universitys reputation as a regional hub
of educational excellence.
As a Praxis University that actively promotes the application of knowledge, UCSI is
pleased that the Co-Op programme has brought a transformational element to its
student experience. A true measure of any university rests in the success of its students
and UCSI graduates have certainly stood out in the industry. Every university has its
legacy. And if UCSI is synonymous with industrial relevance, the Co-Op programme is
the foundation on which this legacy is built.

I did my Co-Op programme at Chemidus Sdn Bhd which is a
simple plant with a simple process ow but set in a very
corrosive environment. The engineering challenges are to have
engineering improvements to ensure good corrosion protection
and reliability. Most of the work is done on solving problems and
the difculties of day to day operations.
My colleagues are friendly and passionate about work and I
learned that critical thinking and creative mindset is important
when solving engineering problems. During my time here, safety
is a main priority and we must always wear long pants, safety
shoes, helmet, gloves and a mask in the main production area.
For my juniors, it is important to note that there is very little public
transport in the companys future Pulau Indah plant so it would
be better to drive. The current Pandamaran plant is to be

Q1:It allows us to experience the real working environment and face the challenges that we would not be able

we learned during our university courses.
I felt challenged and signicant at the same time during the Co-Op placement, because I got to know many
experienced people in programming and we exchanged our opinions and knowledge on IT. Although it
was challenging, I am excited to work in this company and tried my best to solve and contribute more to the
company using my knowledge that I have learned in UCSI University.

Q2:From this work, I have learned a lot of things that I have not been able to cover in class. I had learned many
shortcut keys using Microsoft Visual Studio for programming. With all the shortcut keys, I can do my
programming tasks in an easier and faster way. At rst I was quite worried about the job that my supervisor
assigned to me because I do not have any knowledge of C# programming.

After giving me the job, my supervisor also gave me a set of notes on C# tutorials for me to revise. I found that
C# language is quite similar to the Java language that I learned in the university during my Year 1. This subject
has helped me a lot as C# language is the main language that the company uses for the system coding.
Microsoft SQL database is a storage software that is used by the system of the company. I have been trained
to use this database software for all systems. There are a lot of database checking tasks that was assign to me

Q1:The Co-Op placement allowed me to gain insight into the real working situation in the food industry. Without

that this programme should be continued for my juniors to cultivate their interests in the respective elds and

Q2:The training has enlightened me with a lot of hands-on experience and knowledge beyond the classroom. I was

required to provide assistance on day-to-day routines for new product development as well as for a project on
operation improvement.
At the application group department, tasks like writing laboratory instructions on ice cream heat shock and drip
test by weighing were new to me. I planned which equipment was needed for a heat shock cabinet to carry out
the test.
In addition, the 5S was a new element I experienced in my department which was also a new information to me.
I had done 5S in the warehouse and I did further reading on 5S to understand the importance of creating a
visual workplace, which made the work easier.
I was also always involved in documentations and data system. For example, I assisted in the HALAL
specications for all the raw materials through the online HALAL system. I also did a comparison between two
different types of whey derived powder and distinguished their nutrient information. I checked the ice creams
packaging to ensure the information is updated from time to time.
Furthermore, the Co-Op placement helped me sharpen my interpersonal skills. This placement had built up my

CO-OP:

A DECADE
OF EXCELLENCE
As UCSI University's Co-Operative Education Placement Programme (Co-Op) enters its
10th year, students and staff can look back proudly on a purposeful journey of
opportunity and excellence.
Milestones provide an instance of recognition for universities and the good people
involved in a successful endeavour. It's like a meeting - and sharing - of lives. We had this
experience, we got this far and our experiences made us who we are today.
For UCSI University, one significant milestone is 10 years of Co-Op the definitive industry
placement programme that revolutionised formal internships in Malaysia and the region.
Built on the bedrock of trust and two-way communication, Co-Op sees UCSI partnering
with some of the world's best companies to secure invaluable internships for students
each academic year. With industry experience to complement the mastery of theory
and knowledge, UCSI became to go-to place for work-ready graduates.
From leading global conglomerates to SMEs, doors opened for UCSI students and it
became something of a norm for them to receive job offers even before graduation.
Encouraged, the University continuously expanded its network of industry partners so
students could expand theirs.
The results are quite astounding.
A recent tracer study by the Malaysian Ministry of Education rated UCSI as one of the top
two* universities in Malaysia in the area of graduate employability. With a score of 81.4%,
UCSI is ranked far above other leading private universities. In fact, UCSI outscored every
foreign branch campus in Malaysia! Focusing on the effective work placement of
university students within six months of graduation, the study vindicates the long march
that made Co-Op what it is today.
Note: As far as comprehensive universities are concerned, UCSI is in the top two. Working adults make up the bulk of the student population
at open distance learning universities, contributing to their near perfect scores. And niche medical schools only have one area of focus.

FOUNDATIONS FOR THE FUTURE

It is worth noting that things were not as rosy in the early days. As the first formal industry
placement programme in Asia that required students to undergo internship each year,
UCSI encountered a fair bit of skepticism. The concept of internship was not half as
prevalent a decade ago and even policy makers raised an eyebrow at the University's
initiative. And to make matters worse, companies in Asia were still uncertain about the
contribution interns could make.
Despite the tough negotiations, UCSI persisted and Co-Op started with an inaugural
batch of 30 students and 21 companies. With the opportunity to shine, UCSI students
impressed and word from the ground changed the perception of internship for good.
Companies began to queue up for UCSI interns and the Ministry of Education threw their
support behind the UCSI model. Skepticism turned into optimism and before long, every
leading university in Malaysia had a similar work placement component.

35

THE 10 YEAR JOURNEY

To remain at the epicenter of things, UCSI continually improved its Co-Op model in myriad
ways. The increased scale of operation is probably the most noticeable difference. In
2014, the University placed 3,692 students at 1,806 companies worldwide. These include a
number of overseas internships in countries like Japan, Hong Kong and Singapore
another interesting development that has become a mainstay in the UCSI blueprint.
Enhanced partnerships with leading brands are also signed, paving the way for greater
student involvement, smarter mentoring and greater employment opportunities. Over the
years, a number of UCSI students have enjoyed the privilege of making important
scientific contributions at leading research institutes. And the number of actuarial science
students who receive job offers during their internship is encouraging to say the least.
The success of the Co-Op programme is further enshrined by the launch of UCSI's Premier
Co-Op Partnership Award a game-changing apprenticeship programme that provides
the best academic experience to the best students. Apart from financial aid in the form
of full scholarships, the Award provides recipients with invaluable apprenticeships at the
world's leading companies and customised mentorship programmes to prepare them for
their next giant leap.
Award recipients will work closely with their sponsor during their apprenticeship, enjoying
work stints that are customised to suit their on-the-job progress and academic schedules.
Such in-depth exposure equips students with a thorough understanding of fundamental
operations, enabling them to make meaningful contributions at the workplace. Each
apprentice will also be assigned to a mentor who will monitor and manage their progress
in the company. At the end of this rite of passage, apprentices will receive job offers from
their sponsors.
With all these and more in the pipeline, UCSI celebrates a decade of excellence for
Co-Op. By bringing the best students and the best companies together, UCSI opens doors
as it works to provide smarter solutions for a smarter planet.

We are very happy to employ graduates from USCI

Firstly, I am pleased that the Co-Op students I received
from UCSI University were from the relevant industry,
which is Food Science & Nutrition. In our laboratory, the
Co-Op students are required to conduct experiments,
select the best methods and also perform instrument
validations.
I am happy that UCSI University Co-Op students are well
exposed to knowledge in nutrition, basic laboratory work,
HACCP requirements and GMP requirements. This
knowledge is benecial to them when they serve the food
industry companies during their Co-Op placement or upon
graduation.

The UCSI University Co-Op student who was assigned to us

The UCSI University Co-Op student assigned to us was able
to perform well in all the tasks given, even though it was not
fully related to his academic studies. He was able to adapt
easily and was able to communicate well at all levels of work.
Furthermore, the Co-Op student was able to work
independently and, most of all, was very open minded and
was able to accept any criticism positively as a learning
experience.
We were impressed that he was willing to learn and take up
any other given task, completing them successfully in a short
time. Apart from the Resource Conservation Programme
which he managed, he was also able to check and receive
feedback on cost savings when we applied for special tariff
with TNB.

We had one UCSI University Co-Op student recently, and
she was an observant and hardworking Co-Op student. I
see improvement in her communication skills at work (there
is always room for improvement). She was a very helpful

consider employing.
In addition, she has the right background in her educational
training in the eld of Food Science and Nutrition, which is
relevant and appropriate for the positions available in Wyann

She was also very skilled and adept in computing skills. This
is an additional which UCSI University has done well to

In our opinion, UCSIs Co-Op Placement Programme is an

excellent initiative. Participating as a Co-Op employer has
given us the opportunity to remain updated and connected
to academia and whats new in the education industry.
While working with UCSIs students, we were able to obtain
fresh ideas contributing to our Improvement Projects.

UCSIs Co-Op students displayed positive attitudes and

interest towards the tasks assigned to them. We found that
they were able to work independently once briefed. With
more training and experience, these students would most
denitely be able to contribute effectively to their future

It was great to work with UCSIs students, who were

I would say that with UCSIs Co-Op students, you are rest

UCSI's Co-Op Placement Programme provides students
with the opportunity to combine their academic training with
experience in the workplace. The diversity of experiences
thesestudents receive from their work eases their transition
into the workforce. This will provide students an avenue for
learning beyond the borders of a classroom. In return,
employers benet from having students contribute new
ideas, fresh perspectives, and enthusiasm, to their
organisation. It also gives employers an opportunity to
shape the development of potential employees.

This programme will help to bridge the gap between the

academic community and the world of work, as it promotes
a win-win collaborative relationship between the employers,
students and the education institutions.

Based on our past experiences with USCI's Co-Op students,

we found that they are committed to their work assignments,

Q2:Research and teaching skills. I was having my Co-op placement with an educational training company and a

During my second year of Co-op placement in a multinational company, I was exposed to the corporate world.
The soft skills learned are useful not only in research work (organising information, liaising with different
organisation), but also in daily life (setting life goals, time management).

Q3:Be brave to try out different job options during your Co-op placement as it is a good platform for you to learn

department. More specically I was given the task of
following up on warranty & customer service.

Lembaga Getah Malaysia is a research centre and

thus, I was exposed to many bio-laboratory
techniques such as the operation of SDS-PAGE. Not
only has the Co-Op Programme allowed me to apply
learnt theories into practicality, it has also provided
me with the chance to explore the various industries
related to my eld of study.

Also, through a number of site visits I was able to

learn about the practical aspects of project
management related to air condition chillers and
compressor motors. I am now looking forward to my
next Co-Op work term!

DHL Express (M) Sdn Bhd

Chin Ru Shi
BA (Hons) Marketing
I gained invaluable hands-on working experience as a

Working in KPMG as an audit assistant had provided
me with a good grounding and exposure to the audit

I learnt a lot from helping seniors at KPMG with their

THE 10 YEAR JOURNEY

Malaysian Care

Mohammed Omez Niaz

BA (Hons) Psychology
The things I learned in Malaysian Care were to see
people whom society has rejected abandoned. I
saw how these unfortunate people suffer because
they made mistakes in their lives. It is easy for one to
relate to them because they are human beings like
the rest of us. The thing which moved me most was
to be able to go to the streets and to meet, to talk
and to try to help them. Malaysian Care is a Christian
NGO that tries to reach out to the needy to help them
establish normal lives. Malaysian Care staff took me
on two trips: the rst was to the AIDS Retreat to help
provide entertainment to needy children and their
others.
Since the poor cannot afford to go on vacation by
entertaining them, they were able to get away from
their home environment. The second trip was to the
Serenti Centre, the Malaysian national rehabilitation
centre. It enabled me to see how the Government of
Malaysia is trying to help drug addicts ght their
drug addiction and cope with life.
The Co-Op Placement programme provided me a
hands-on approach to counselling psychology, how
to build rapport with clients, and to have an open
communication. I was able to see the relationship
between my education and the practical application
of my subjects. It was a good experience and I
wouldn't mind going back to learn more.

Cryocord Sdn Bhd

Reshna K Maravan
BSc (Hons) Biotechnology
My Co-Op placement with Cryocord Sdn. Bhd. taught
me a lot throughout the two months. The work
environment at Cryocord was pleasant and I truly
enjoyed my Co-Op placement there. Cryocord
provided me the opportunity to understand the nature
of work of a cell biologist.

Female Magazine

Sherleen Lim
BA (Hons) Mass Communications
I have gained different experiences from my Co-Op
placement with Female Magazine, Blu Inc Holdings
(Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd. Working in a publication
company is fun and the things you learn or are
exposed to are amazing. My experiences include
learning how to write advertorials, dealing or liaising
with clients, contributing ideas for the columns in the
magazine, and also choosing items for the magazines
photo shoots.
Attending events and launches of new stores were also
part of my job. Besides that, I got to meet celebrities
such as Daphne Iking, Channel V VJs like Johnathan
Putra and Marion Caunter.
Being part of a publication company is denitely
interesting and challenging, and working with the
journalists for four months gave me conviction that this
is my career path.

Otis Elevator Company (M) Sdn Bhd

Kenneth Lee Hsien Hoong

BEng (Hons) Mechatronic Engineering
My Co-Op experience at Otis allowed me to gain
exposure as a trainee project engineer in a real
working environment and also provided me a better
understanding of the installation processes of
elevators and escalators.
I helped to keep track of ongoing projects in various
parts of Klang Valley and Selangor. Thus, I was able
to learn a lot from the staff as they were really friendly
and helpful.

As an Co-Op student with Cryocord, I learned and

enhanced my knowledge on stem cells, how to
provide service to customers, and experienced some
self-development.

Before our Co-Op placement with Eppendorf ended,
we had already started missing the great times and
fun we had especially during the birthday

BSc (Hons) Biotechnology
Over the past four months, I was placed at Premier

for F&N Dairies. This Co-Op placement was indeed
a marvellous experience for me as I was given the
opportunity to work with different people of different
expertise at the manufacturing site as well as the
quality control department.
In addition, the
exposure to the Fast Moving Consumer Goods

Currently, I am working as a research assistant in

BA (Hons) Mass Communication

BEng (Hons) Electrical & Electronic Engineering

In my opinion, having two months Co-Op

placement at BERNAMA TV was such a good and
challenging task for me as I could learn a lot of
things that I was not able to at school. For example,
I familiarised myself with new software such as
Octopus and Incite Media Producer. Besides that,
UCSI University provided Mass Communication
students with a total of six months Co-Op
placement. This will help me to understand new
trends and prepare myself for the rapid changes in
this industry.

The best part of my Co-Op placement was to get

involved in one of the most vibrant hi-tech industries.
I was also exposed to the high standards of experts
in this eld who are only satised with the very best.

RE also helps me to improve my soft skills and gain a
lot of experience. In addition, the colleagues there are
very caring, sociable and considerate. They are also
willing to help and guide me all the time.
Ann Li: I learnt a lot working at Recruit Express (RE).
I learnt how to conduct interviews with selected
candidates, call and make appointments for available
vacancies, match candidates to relevant job
positions, prepare rsums and candidates proles
in a standard format, answer phone enquiries, attend
to walk-in candidates who are applying for jobs and
perform administrative work. I am now able to
understand different company cultures and job

imitation).
Early Steps Care Centres mission is to offer services
to people with learning difculties so that they may

contribute my part in helping with some of the events
being organized for the children. At the same time, I
met many new people from different cultures, races
and religions among the parents, other Co-Op

My experience as an English teacher at Yayasan

Chow Kit Home Schooling Programme has been the
most memorable working experience of my life! I
really cherished the moments of being a teacher
there. My centre coordinator, Ms. Ananti

helping hand whenever I needed one.
The students assigned to me were the other
highlight of this placement - they were very

named me their Most Favourite Teacher in the
school! In addition to being their teacher, I also
became their mentor in classroom activities for the
children and teenagers alike. It was a boost to my
condence, and it increased my enthusiasm in
teaching and helped me use my personality to a
greater advantage as part of the work.
I am grateful for the experiences I have received

The four months of the Co-Op period was a wonderful
experience. After this Co-Op placement, I am able to
understand better how real-world working life is, and
I am also able to understand the semiconductor
industry and its processes much better.
I have also learnt how to manage people, machines,

wherever I go, in any other process industry.
Experience in solving problems has also helped me
build some skills, such as being patient in solving
problems and helped me to improve troubleshooting
skills. I have acquired these skills by solving some of
the machine problems through analyzing how the
problem occurred and what caused it to happen.
Going through this practical training has allowed me

My Co-Op placement at Top Glove Corporation Berhad was enriching, educational and exciting. The
programme was well structured, yet exible enough to grant me the freedom to explore various products and

Fontera Brands (M) Sdn Bhd

Ngoi Pauline

BSc (Hons) Food Science & Nutrition

My two-month Co-Op placement in Fontera Brands (M) Sdn. Bhd. as part of the quality control team was truly
an astounding and rewarding experience for me. It was certainly a rewarding way to spend what could have
been my semester break. I had very little practical idea what quality control was before the Co-Op placement.
It was a term that I encountered through several lectures in Food Microbiology. However, the information
transmitted in the classroom became more relevant and I understood it even more in terms of how exactly it
worked when I was actually working in a factory as a real-life quality control personnel.
The training enlightened me with a lot of hands-on experience and knowledge beyond the class. Starting from
basic tasks, such as how to photocopy documents, how to prepare analysis reports, to the more complicated
tasks, such as conducting analysis on every batch of milk powder, I have learnt to master all these with more
skill now. Supervisors and colleagues were extremely friendly and willing to guide and supervise me during the
training. Most importantly, I had a chance to also apply what I had learnt in the class, especially laboratory
skills, in the real working world situation.
In addition, this training has improved my interpersonal skills and helped me learn to be more independent,
condent, and be willing to take on more responsibilities. Working with colleagues from different races and
countries, has taught me how to respect people, communicate cross-culturally, and also to learn to share more
of my own experiences to help others too. I believe that the UCSI University Co-Op Education Programme has
helped me to increase my future employability and gain a better understanding of working life in quality
control.

I also managed to gain more knowledge regarding lab work such as lab testing, lab research, etc.
During this Co-Op placement, I felt that my soft skills had also improved (for example, I am now better at time

ASUSTek Computer Inc

Joseph Joe Kulube

BEng (Hons) Electrical & Electronic Engineering

This programme enabled me to undertake a four-month period of industry placement in order to gain practical
experience in a working environment and demonstrate the acquisition of sufcient learning skills relevant to
work-based activities. This intensive Co-Op placement provides for the development of enhanced transferable
skills and lifelong learning skills, including planning, negotiating, implementing, signifying and reecting.
I undertook my Co-Op placement at ASUSTek Computer Inc. The company is situated in Kuala Lumpur in
Malaysia, with operations all over the country. During this period, I went through intensive training in different elds
such as customer service, pre-testing (troubleshooting), technician-work and some warehouse tasks (packaging
and new products registration). During the four-month period, the mentioned tasks were rotated among employees
according to the knowledge required for the task at hand. My favourite tasks in this intensive Co-Op placement
included computer repair, which was under the technician sector. Repair included replacing the faulty parts with
new ones for computers and notebooks with problems or defects. The defects were either mechanical or software.
The mechanical problems were repaired by replacing the faulty parts such as motherboards, hard-disks, LCDs,
LCD cables, keyboard etc, while the software problems were xed by formatting and restoring the operating
system known as the AI recovery.
This intensive Co-Op placement offered an opportunity to put the classroom material into practice and most of all it
contributed to my self-esteem, developed my stamina for hard work, enhanced my leadership skills, as well as
improved my communication skills as I was working with people of different races. The University and the
company can join hands and cooperate towards helping future Co-Op students to have better understanding of
employer expectations through the Co-Op. Working together will help the two parties to better train future
technicians and/ or business men and women.

AWARD & SCHOLARSHIP PRESENTATION CEREMONY 2013

CELEBRATING SUCCESS

The UCSI University (UCSI) Award & Scholarship Presentation Ceremony 2013 theme, Celebrating
Success has awarded more than 270 prodigious students with various awards and scholarships.
Jointly organised by UCSI University Trust, the Universitys scholarship arm, and the Student Affairs and
Alumni Division, this annual event honours student achievements both inside and outside the
classroom.
To date, UCSI has awarded various scholarships and financial assistance worth over RM38 million to
approximately 1,400 undergraduates at UCSI.
One fine example is the Industrial Partners Sponsorship Award, which is awarded to students who
have demonstrated adaptive qualities under the Co-Operative Education Placement Programme.
Companies such as Cryocord Sdn Bhd, Hilti (M) Sdn Bhd and Tan Chong Group, have given their full
support by presenting these students with monetary awards for their achievements.
Notably, this award successfully illustrates the strong ties between the University and its esteemed
industrial partners.

CAREER PREPARATIONS

According to UCSI University Council Chairman Tan Sri Dato Seri (Dr) Musa Mohamad, these
achievements are a testament to UCSIs unwavering commitment to educational excellence and
lifelong learning.
The nation is at the brink of its economic growth and this is why UCSI University is committed to
create an environment that emphasises more than academic learning; an environment that ensures
our students have every opportunity to fulfill their potential, he said in his speech.
I take great pride in seeing the abundance of talents within our University and todays ceremony is
an excellent showcase of the new generations dynamics to take the nation to greater heights.
In a nutshell, we take great pride in this noteworthy event and look forward to seeing the next take
flight with the support of both our students and industrial partners.

ABOUT CECS

ABOUT CECS

Co-Op FAQs
Question 1: What is Co-Op?

The UCSI University Co-op Placement Programme is essentially an industrial/practical training

component added on to your tertiary education. It is a programme that formally integrates
classroom learning with workplace training in Co-operative employer organisations to provide
students a comprehensive and relevant work-plus-study experience. Students in the UCSI University
degree and diploma programmes are required to complete a two-month Co-op module for every
academic study year, and receive a grade upon the completion of each Co-op Module, in partial
fulfilment of the degree and diploma requirements.

Question 2: Is it compulsory?

Yes, the Co-op component is compulsory for all UCSI University's degree and diploma programmes
(with the exception of Medicine, Pharmacy and Nursing degrees which have their own
clerkship/industrial training component).

Question 3: Does this extend the time of my degree programme?

The Co-op Placement Programme does not extend your study time for any undergraduate degree
or diploma programme even though UCSI University has included this extra two-month module (the
Co-op takes place two months immediately after the traditional two-month short semester).

Question 4: When I start the Co-Op?

The Co-op Placement Programme usually takes place annually in the months of
November-December. Only graduating students (i.e. students who have completed all the
academic modules in their degree programme but have not completed their Co-Op components)
may carry out their Co-Op placement commencing January, May and September annually.

Question 5: Do I have to pay additional fees to participate?

No, you do not need to pay additional fees to participate in the Co-op Placement Programme.

Question 6: Can I do 4 or 6 months in a row instead of three 2-month periods?

No. With the Co-op Policy students only can take 2-month Co-op in each year of their studies.

UCSI UNIVERSITY
CO-OPERATIVE EDUCATION REPORT 2013

107

ABOUT CECS

Question 7: Would this Co-Op really be an advantage over other universities

who do not have it?

Yes. As students, you will appreciate that one of the anxieties you may face when undertaking the
present degree or diploma of your choice is whether in the face of constant future uncertainties in
the economy and the job market, you will be able to get a good job upon graduating.
Furthermore, sometimes there are concerns how practical and applicable was your theoretical
education programme in the real work world outside, and whether what you studied in the
classroom - or even the laboratory is relevant when you go out to work.
Even more, you may sometimes also ask what is it that will set you apart as a UCSI University graduate
in comparison to all the other graduates of the other universities (especially when you wish to be
more marketable and in demand upon graduating from UCSI University).
With the above considerations in mind, UCSI University unveils its Co-op component to set you apart
from all the other tertiary students in the country, thereby, giving you a huge advantage over other
graduates.

Question 8: What if I am placed in a company that is far away?

UCSI University will endeavour to only appoint employers within and beyond the Klang Valley as well
as Overseas. Some national or multi-national companies may have either out-station or off-shore
companies, which may be presented to students as options if students so choose to take it up.

Question 9: Will I be assured of a placement that is relevant to my degree?

Yes. UCSI University will endeavour to ensure that the Co-op objective of providing relevant and
appropriate industrial training pertinent to the discipline of the degree or diploma undertaken is met.

Question 10: Will I need to attend an interview?

Yes. most if not all job placements will require at least one round of interviews with potential
employers. There will be a great deal of competition for placements in the more lucrative or
attractive companies, with potential employers reserving the right to interview and select student
interns accordingly.
Consequently, good academic scores, as well as a well-prepared interview process by the
student-candidates, will always stand them in good stead.

Question 11: Will UCSI place me in the company of my preference for Co-Op?

Yes. The employment process is highly competitive and factors such as academic performance,
skills, motivation, maturity, attitude, professional conduct, flexibility and performance potential, will
determine whether a student is offered employment or not.
Although every effort will be made by UCSI University to find the best fit work positions for students
enrolled in the different degree programmes, the openly competitive nature of the process means
that no guarantee of a student's first choice of employment can be made.

108

UCSI UNIVERSITY
CO-OPERATIVE EDUCATION REPORT 2013

ABOUT CECS

Question 12: Can I choose a company that is not a UCSI Universitys Co-Op Partner
for my Co-Op?

UCSI University is willing to consider other companies deemed suitable for the students growth and
learning experience as long as the company is willing to accept him/her, and be subject to UCSI
Universitys teams and condition for Co-Op. Students may also recommend companies of their
interest, however these recommendations are to be made one month prior to the commencement
of the students Co-op component.

Question 13: How will I be assessed or graded and by whom?

You will be assessed and graded on your performance of the Co-Op component by both your work
supervisor, as well as the members of your Faculty/Institute.
Occasionally, students, faculty, and the CECS staff will meet with students on an ad-hoc basis to
discuss areas of mutual concern as they affect the academic programme, the work programme,
work reports, regulations and procedures, etc.
Work report requirements vary by School and Department. Students must submit work reports
according to their School and/or Department requirements. Work report guidelines are available in
a variety of formats from the relevant Schools (e.g. online, hardcopy, e-mail, etc.)

Question 14: What if I fail the Co-Op Placement at the end of the two months?

You will be considered as having failed that particular component of your degree or diploma
requirements, and will need to repeat the component. You may or may not be allowed to progress
on to the following academic study year depending on the recommendations of the respective
Head of School.
There will also be options for the University Exam Board, the University Academic Board, as well as the
Head of School, to re-assess the reasons why you may have failed and re-evaluate your work
experience through further interviews, reports or investigations.
Thus, students are strongly advised to conduct themselves professionally at all times and to abide all
company policies and rulings, while performing their jobs to their best ability.
This list does not outline all the disciplinary actions that may be applied when UCSI University Co-op
policies or regulations or the employing company's procedures are violated. Disciplinary action is the
option of the University Academic Board and the relevant Head of School.

Question 15: What if I get fired?

Same senario applies to Q14.
