Artillery of Bells
The Salvation Army enlists its troops to battle hopelessness
in trying times. { STORY AND PHOTOS BY MICKEY BRANDT }

her bell-ringing enlistment last week at Hobby Lobby in Millville.

heres a war on ISIS, a

war in Afghanistan,
maybe a new Cold War,
some say a war against Planned
Parenthood. So, its easy to overlook the one being fought
daily in our own neighborhoods: The war on hopelessness.
Hopelessness is mostly unseenglimpsed in the eyes of
the homeless man at the highway overpass, wafting around
the soup kitchens, or fostering the unavoidable knowledge
that children can actually go to bed hungry. It occasionally
haunts our Thanksgiving feasts, too: We have so much,
they have so little.
Also unseen, except outside your supermarket at
Christmastime, is the battle for hope being waged by a
coalition force of zealous Christians, dedicated volunteers,
and remarkable leaders. Its the Salvation Army and its
Red Kettle troops with their artillery of bells.
We are in a war, fighting for a better life for the community, said Major Miguel Barriera, 52, who leads the
organization in Vineland, Millville, and surrounding areas.
You cant stop and put your hands down or people wont
have anywhere to live or anything to eat.
Even with English as his second language, Barriera
talked in staccato, pouring out his vision, as we drove to
locations where volunteers were working. He paused only
to ask his wife America, 49, also a Salvation Army major,
for a translation of contingent or inexcusable. He was
greeted by name a dozen times, thanked for previous
deeds, occasionally hugged.
Not unlike military discipline, there are contingencies to
a familys aid.
Some people need it less, and some more, said
Barriera, a 28-year Salvation Army veteran who came here

The Southwest Council, Inc. cordially
invites all members of the community to
attend their second annual Tree of Hope. The
event will take place Monday, December 7,
from 6 to 8 p.m. at The Southwest Council,
Inc., 1405 N. Delsea Drive, Vineland. Family
and friends will gather to honor and celebrate
those in recovery and their freedom from
addiction and commemorate those who have
lost their lives and battle to substance abuse
addiction. The event is a reminder that substance abuse and addiction has impacted
most families in some way.
Each year The Southwest Council, Inc. honors various organizations from counties in our
service area to help recognize the work they
provide to the community and also to aide
individuals in recovery. This year, they are
recognizing the Center for Family Services
Family First program of Glassboro, which
provides outpatient services to women in
recovery and support services for their children. If interested in making a donation to the

been with the Army for parts of the last
three decades, often through cold winters,

Marlene Lloyd thrives on making kind

out their needs, calling the major to get
some families Christmas toys, a phone bill

Her battlefield is a good one; the location
often collects hundreds of dollars a day and

Christmas Eve.
Success often depends on the animation
and cheerfulness of the bell ringer.
If you keep shopping here and I keep
standing here, youll put money in, Marlene
Lloyd said. You have to have passion.
Salvation Army volunteer Guadaloupe
Ramirez, 19, has all this ahead of her. I
encountered her in front of Hobby Lobby
during her first day on the job. There, I
realized the two-way nature of the traditionthe bell ringers aid people by their
presence.
It makes me feel good to be here,
Ramirez said. Someone may be having a
bad day and I say hello and Have a nice

helps them a little.
Her friend, Janessa Quiles, 14, has an
amazing six years of experience with the

kettle; her mother, Ruby, is a longtime volunteer. The girls said the work isnt hard
despite the hours, but mentioned the
monotony of the bell.
You hear it in your sleep, Quiles said.
In the midst of holiday cheer, there are
sometimes glares and taunts and, rarely,
examples of inexplicable ignorance surrounding the kettles.
If I happen to get slapped or somethings thrown at me, I just ignore it,
Marlene Lloyd said. Some people have
good hearts and some dont.
We dont all stand outside for hours in
the cold projecting good cheer with everyone we face, but we all know about the different hearts. I

away on November 20 at Inspira
Medical Center. She was a Millville resident until August 2015 when she
moved in with her niece and nephew
Nicki and Damian Russo and their family. Gloria graduated from Millville High
School in 1947 where she boycotted
her senior trip to Washington DC due
to racial discrimination. Growing up
she worked at Armstrong Cork, L&I
Dress, and then spent many years at
the West Company where her strong
sense of right and wrong got her
involved in the GBBA/GPPAW including
contract negotiations and was fortunate
enough to be chosen to visit Great
Britain as part of a team that observed
business practices abroad. After retiring from the West Company, she
worked for the Millville School System
and shared that same knowledge of
negotiation with them. Her great joy
was her grandson Scott; she spent
many years traveling to sporting events
as one half of The Moms. She was

the Sisterhood of the Sacred Heart.
She spent many happy hours making
pierogies with the club members, and
often attempted to convince the other
workers that her way was, of course,
the best! She pinched her last pierogy
on Thursday, Nov. 19th. Irene had many
other hobbies as well. Her love of reading lasted to the end, as well as her
passion for sharing recipes with her
daughters. She enjoyed going to 97th
Street in Stone Harbor, sipping her
merlot, tending to her flowers and her
plants. Most of all, she enjoyed her
trips to AC and to Florida with the
Jersey Girls! She enjoyed travelling
throughout her life, seeing many parts
of the world with family and friends.
She returned to France often and is
survived by one sister, Catherine
LeBufnoir, of St. Maturin, France, along
with several nieces and nephews. Irene
survived the loss of her only son,
George A. Manduke, to ALS in 2008.
She endured the hardship of breast
cancer, successfully beating it in 2012.
Irene was proud of her children and is
survived by her three girls, Bernadine
Rose and husband Randy, Michelle
Kavanagh and husband Kevin, and
Catherine Romanik and husband
James. She is also survived by her
three grandchildren, Dr. Megan M.
Kavanagh, Andrew M. Kavanagh, MTBC and C/SSG Benjamin J. Romanik,
each of whom she adored.

Angels at Vineland Public Library

If youre looking for a way to share the spirit of the holiday, Vineland Public Library can
help. The library is again sponsoring an Angel
Tree for the 2015 holiday season. In lieu of
decorations, paper angels adorn the librarys
holiday tree. Each angel represents a local
child, whose family is in need, and lists the
gender and age of the child. Area residents are
encouraged to select an angel from the tree
and purchase an appropriate toy or gift item.
The unwrapped gifts are to be brought to
the library along with the paper angel by
December 21. The gifts will then be wrapped
and distributed to the families in time for
holiday giving. The library is also accepting
donations of gift boxes, wrapping paper, tape
and bows. Stop by the library and choose
your angel. For more information, call the
library at 856-794-4244.

Low-Dose Radiology at Inspira

Medical Center
Physicians and staff at Inspira Medical
Center Vineland recently began performing
diagnostic studies and treatments for
patients with cancer and vascular conditions
using new low-dose interventional radiologic technology.
This new interventional radiology high
resolution technology delivers enhanced
imaging studies, but what is even more
exciting is that it reduces a persons
exposure to radiation by up to 80 percent,
said Michael Villani, M.D., fellowship
trained interventional radiologist with
Regional Diagnostic Imaging.
Inspiras Vineland-based hospital is the
only facility in Cumberland, Gloucester, Salem
and Camden counties to offer this interventional radiologic technology which provides
the lowest dose of radiation available.
With this new technology, our doctors
are able to make more accurate diagnoses,
achieve better outcomes, with greater
patient safety, and less risk of complications, said Joe Alessandrini, vice president
of clinical services at Inspira Medical
Centers Elmer and Vineland.

he Holiday Parade is over for

another year and that means that
the holiday seasonshopping,
shows, events, and so much
moreis just beginning.
You can read about the winners in the
sidebar box, but I do want to offer my
thanks for a job well done. The parade is
one of our largest events of the year and,
though its always an ambitious undertaking, it goes smoothly when youve got good
people working at it. I want to thank BB&T
for being the parades major sponsor.
BB&T, formerly Susquehanna Bank, has
been a good friend of Main Street Vineland
through the years and has supported so
many of our events. I also want to thank
the Cumberland County Improvement
Authority, as well as the others whose
sponsorship and support made the parade
possible.
Gary Galloway, a former Board chairperson, came forward to chair this years
parade, as he did last year. He is stepping
down from chairing the parade and he
deserves my gratitude for helping me out
last year, when I first came aboard as
Executive Director, as well as this year. I
also want to thank my assistant, Robin
Barbetti, for all her hard work in organizing
the paradefrom the beginning to the day
of the parade.
I thank our Board for their support and
all the volunteers whose help brought this
parade from concept to reality. We had
some new volunteers who joined us and
some older volunteers who returned to give
us the benefit of their experience. I cant
thank them all individually here, but my
thanks and gratitude go out to all of them.
These events, as Ive said before, dont
come together by themselves.
And now, we move on. In my last column, I outlined some of our plans for the
future. Like the Holiday Parade and the
other events that weve done, these plans
require people to come forward and volunteer to take on a task. You dont have to be
an expert or a specialist with a degree. All
thats needed is the desire, the passion, and

Holiday Parade: Winning

Floats Announced
The winning floats have been
announced for the Vineland Main
Street Holiday Parade. The parade,
organized by Main Street Vineland,
with sponsorship by BB&T and
additional sponsorship by the
Cumberland County Improvement
Authority, had the theme Light Up
the World and took place on
Saturday, November 28, on Landis
Avenue in Vineland. The various
parade participant categories have
been reduced this year to first, second, and third place winners for all
floats.
With so many entries showing
holiday spirit and creativity, it was
hard to narrow the judging down to
three winners, but we wanted to
make the selection process as
streamlined as possible, said
Russell Swanson, Main Street
Vineland Executive Director.
The winners are as follows:
1st Place: Edgarton Christian
Academy
2nd Place: Spanish American
Relief Fund
3rd Place: Marie Durand
Elementary School

inclined. Two horses

had been killed by
hard driving and ill
usage. He would carry
liquor home and conceal it in the woods.
He was seen by Mr.
Scheer on one occasion hiding a small
cask. Mr. Scheer
[secretly] removed the cask, placing it in
Mrs. Andersons keeping.
The magazine reports that Anderson
began attending revival meetings at the
Methodist Church and signed a pledge not
to drink. Settling into a different lifestyle,
he became a Freeholder and served the
township well. A few years later, he happened to be riding with Scheer who admitted to being the one who removed the hidden cask from the woods through which
they were traveling.
Mr. Anderson grasped the hand of Mr.
Scheer with a strength that was crushing
and exclaimed, You will go to Heaven for
that good deed. It was the last whiskey I
ever bought. I intended drinking it Sunday
with my companions. God will reward you
for the good you did.Anderson went on to
a successful life, eventually moving to
southern California and Chicago.
Scheer remained in Vineland, but it was
reported that he stopped his daily walks in
October 1931. Still, he remained active and
showed no signs of ailing health until
January 1932. Two months later, at the age
of 94, he died.
He had outlived most of his children but
was survived by four sons, 17 grandchildren
and three great-grandchildren, according to
his obituary. He was interred in Oak Hill
Cemetery, the last soldier to join his Civil
War comrades in this Vineland resting place.
This may have been his adopted home
when he first arrived off the coast of Sea
Isle and made his way to Millville and then
Vineland, chopping wood and clearing
streets to make a living. His efforts contributed to the development of Charles K.
Landis new settlement as well as to the
preservation of the Union in the bloodiest
and most bitter of our wars. He may have
begun life here as an adopted son, but
when he departed Vineland, it was as an
American. I

ack in Vineland, Gustav Scheer,

an Alsatian sailor, Civil War veteran and one of Vinelands earliest residents, settled into a life of
farming. Having purchased land on the
south side of Chestnut Avenue between
Orchard Road and Delsea Drive, he
acquired the adjacent property and erected
a new home, a barn and other necessities,
raised his family and tended to his crops.
Scheers vineyards and orchards produced grapes, berries and assorted fruit. It
was reported in the Vineland Historical
Magazine in 1917 that in his cellar is a
[wine] cask holding 1,200 gallons and several of smaller size.
But not all of his time was spent in
Vineland after the war. Interested in seeing
his native country again, Scheer returned
to Europe in what was presumably 1878.
He briefly described the trip for the
Vineland Historical Magazine: I visited
Paris during the World's Fair, taking my
daughter Josephine with me. I wished to
visit my native town, Colmar, in Alsace, but
did not chose (sic) to pay the German price
for passports, and did not go. My children
are all grown and away from home, excepting the youngest. I have worked hard and
been prosperous. I have all I need."
In the same interview, Scheer claims that
his wife died in 1888, but a family history
written by his great-great grandson
Edmund, explains that she died in 1886
while giving birth to the couples 12th child.
In 1904, Scheer married Jenny Guiffra,
pictured, from Millville and soon sold the
farm and settled in a new home at Eighth
and Quince streets. He remained in good
health most of his life. Described as nearly
six-feet tall and close to 200 pounds, he
maintained a daily routine of taking walks
through the borough of Vineland.
Although not much more is known
about Gustav Scheer through biographical
accounts, one item has been preserved in
the Vineland Historical Magazine concerning a Mr. John B. Anderson, a relative of
author and journalist Charles Nordhoff and
Gustavs neighbor. Anderson, a native of
Ohio, was also a veteran of the Civil War.
According to the magazine, Mr.
Anderson brought from camp life a fondness for intoxicating drinks. He would go
off on sprees with companions similarly

Feeding the Birds in Style

At the Bridgeton Amish Market, look for Dutch Family Furniture and you will find birdfeeders
that mimic our feathered friends. Shown here are an American eagle and a hummingbird, but
the selection is great. Birdwatchers will like adding one or two of these to their menagerie of
feeders, but this is also a great gift for the grandkids. Along with a bag of birdseed, introduce
the wee ones to this fun wintertime activity of setting up a feeder and watching for which birds
come to dinner. Each feeder sells for just $35.
Browse a little farther in the shop and nestled amongst the custom furniture items, actually
on a finely crafted shelf unit, you will find candles in scents ranging from Day Spa to Cinnamon

VMU Officials Warn About

Recent Phone Scam
Vineland Municipal Utilities warns its
customers about a recent phone scam
involving calls made by individuals representing themselves as utility employees to local businesses and residential
customers. The caller demands an immediate payment is required on a past due
bill to avoid disconnection of service.
Customers are also informed they are

LEGISLATIVE CORNER
The GVCC is in constant dialogue with our
elected officials
regarding the
Affordable Care Act
and general issues
regarding health insurance that impacts
businesses. Recently,
Congressman Frank
LoBiondo notified us
about the requirement for employers with more than 200 employees to
automatically enroll new employees in a company-offered health plan.
This requirement was repealed in the Bipartisan Budget Act of 2015,
which Congressman LoBiondo voted for and it became law on
November 2, 2015. We will continue to follow legislation regarding
healthcare and fight to have our voices heard.
On behalf of our members, we are opposing a NJ Senate Bill S3169 that
would allow county governments to impose a 1% tax on hotel/motel
rooms in order to raise money to reduce county property taxes. We
believe this bill would be regressive to our tourism industry and sportscentered programs that utilize hotels in our region. We have contacted
the Senators of Districts 33 and 36 who chair the Senate Budget and
Appropriations Committee, as well as copied our District 1 Senator Jeff
Van Drew.
required to pay their past due bill immediately with a Green Dot pre-paid
MoneyPak debit card, with a credit
card, or via their bank account. Once the
account number is provided to the caller,
the scammer removes the funds from the
customers bank account, pre-paid card
or credit card.
VMU warns customers under no circumstances should a customer provide
any banking or payment information
over the phone. VMU reps. are not
required to call customers asking for a
payment via the phone. Payments are
only accepted by mail, in person at
Vineland City Hall or via our Customer
Self Service portal with a credit card,
debit card or e-check.
In order to identify a fraudulent call,
VMU recommends the following tips to
customers:
Ask for the callers name, department, and business phone number. If
caller refuses to provide information
requested, terminate call.
Ask caller to verify your utility
account information. If the caller is a
VMU Customer Service Rep., they will
ask for the party of record. VMU reps.
will not accept payments via phone.
If customer suspects a fraudulent
call, jot down phone number and report
it to the local authorities.

TESTIMONIAL OF THE MONTH

Sir Speedy of Vineland has been a Chamber Member for
many years.... Our membership allows us to keep active in many
community events, and form great partnerships and relationships with other businesses in the community. Dawn and Cathy
are amazing, there are so many events going on all the time, and
when you attend the events it is a wonderful networking experience. We received great exposure with our meet and greet, and it was a very successful event. Being a Chamber Member is very helpful in getting your business exposed.
We take great pride in being Chamber Members and look forward to many more great
years with the Vineland Chamber of Commerce.
