LessonSummary:

Thepurposeofthislessonistobuildknowledgeofhowtoclassifyanimals.Studentswill
learntoclassifyspeciesintotheirdomain,aswellaslearnthehierarchyofgroupingsin
taxonomy.Followingalessononthetopic,studentswillbegintoresearchtwoanimalsof
theirchoice,livingorextinct.Itisencouragedthatstudentsstudyananimalavailablefor
dissection,butitisnotrequired.Therewillbeclasstimegivenforthis,noneoftheproject
shouldbedoneoutsideoftheclassroom,otherthanforfinishingtouches.Resourceswillbe
provided.Afterthestudentsfindabulkoftheirresearchfortheiranimals,theywillcreatea
powerpointcomparingtheanimalstaxonomyandevolutionofthespecies,usingasmany
visualsaspossible.

EstimatedDuration:

Five50minuteclassperiods.

Commentary:

Mygoalforthestudentsisforthemtounderstandwhywecategorizespeciesintodifferent
groups.Ihopethattheywillfindappreciationintherelationshipsamongsuchalargenumber
ofspecies.Iamgivingthestudentsthefreedomtochoosetheiranimalstomakeitmore
interestingforthemandkeepthemmoreengaged.Ianticipatethelessonapproachingthe
researchwillbeachallengeinkeepingthestudentsinvolved.Itwillalsobeachallenge
reviewingwiththestudentshowtoresearch.Itisaround10thgradewhenstudentsfirststart
learningthedosanddontswithoutmuchpractice.Ifindbiologyexcitingandwilldo
whateverittakestokeepmystudentsengaged,aswellasansweranyquestionstheymay
have.TherearemanyacronymsIcouldteachmystudentstohelpthemremembertheorder
ofclassification.TokeepthemmoreengagedIcouldprovideliveexamplesofsomesmall
animals,andexplaintheirtaxonomyandhowitworks.

InstructionalProcedures:

Day1:
Onthisdaythestudentswilltaketheirpreassessmentquiz.Thefirst5minutesofclassIwill
presentthequizandletthestudentsknowthatitsjusttoseewhattheyknow.Thequizwill
beshortandtakenolongerthan20minutes.Itwillbeturnedinandlatergradedfor
completion.Thelast25minutesofclasswillbelecturebasedusingaSMARTboard

demonstratingmyownpowerpoint.Thiswillbeoverthefirstsectionofonechapterabout
animalclassificationandnomenclature.

Day2:
Forthefirst10minuteswewilldoashortreviewofthelecturefromthepreviousdayand
answeranyquestionsthestudentsmayhave.Iwillpassbackthestudentspreassessment
andgoovertheanswers,lettingthemgradetheirownpapers(10minutes).Thenext20
minutesofclasswillbealessononproperresearchandinstructionsfortheproject.Using
mySMARTboardtodemonstrate,Iwillshowstudentsappropriatewebsitestoutilizeand
giveashortreviewonhowtocitetheirsources,doingafewpracticeones.Dependingon
whetherthereisalast10minutesofclass,Iwillgivediscussiontimetothestudentstostart
thinkingabouttheanimalsfortheirproject.

Day3:
Day3willbespentonlaptopsintheclassroom.Eachstudentwillbeprovidedwiththeirown.
Thisisthefirstdayofresearchandtheentire50minuteswillbespentonit.Studentsare
independentlyworking,writingdownanyinformationandwebsitestheyfinduseful.Iwillbe
involved,minimally.

Day4:
WhenthestudentsarriveforclassIwillhaveasamplepowerpointontheboard.Iwillslide
throughitgivingthestudentsanideaofhowtoapproachtheproject,answeringany
questionstheymayhaveabouttheprogram.Laptopswillalreadybesetupontheirdesks.
Fortherestofclass(about25minutes)studentswillcontinuetheirresearchandideally
begintheirpowerpointpresentations.Illbewalkingaroundcheckingtheirprogress.

Day5:
Thiswillbethelastdayforstudentstocompletetheirpowerpointpresentations.The
researchportionshouldbecompletedandIwillbecheckingthatallstudentshavemoved
on.Studentswillbeallowedtoworkontheirprojectsathomeifanyfinishingtouchesneedto
bemade.

PreAssessment:

Thepreassessmentinvolvesashortquizonthestudentsknowledgeofthesubject.Most
likely,theydonthavemuchofabackgroundtothislevelofbiology.Idliketoseewhatthey
mayknowandgettheirbrainsworkinginthebeginningofclass.

ScoringGuidelines:

Ondays3,4,and5,Iwillbemakinglapsaroundtheclassroomansweringquestionsand
checkingstudentprogress.

Thepreassessmentwillbegradedforcompletion,andwillbepassedbacktothemtobe
gradedontheirown.Thegoalisforthemtolearnfromtheirmistakesvisuallyandverbally.

PostAssessment:
Thepostassessmentistheirfinishedpowerpointproject.Ontheirdaybacktoclasstheywill
begivenasimilarquiztothepreassessmentoverthesectionthatwillbegraded
accordingly,notjustforcompletion.

ScoringGuidelines:

Finalprojectsshouldcontainaminimumof5graphicsandaminimumof8slides
demonstratingtheirunderstandingoftaxonomicgroupsandtheirnaming.Theymustalso
useproperresearchstrategiesandcitetheirsources.Spellingofallanimalclassifications
mustbespelledcorrectly.Thegradeforthiswillbecalculatedusingarubricandwillbea
percentageoutof100points.

DifferentiatedInstructionalSupport
Describehowinstructioncanbedifferentiated(changedoraltered)tomeettheneedsof
giftedoracceleratedstudents:
Thesestudentswouldmostlikelyjustfinishtheirprojectsmorequickly,askingless
questions.Itisalwaysniceforstudentstoconsultwithotherstudentsandevencheckeach
otherswork.TypicallytheoverachieversarehappytohelptheirfellowstudentsandIwould
encouragethemtodoso.
