(School Administrator)
Candidate: Ms. JeLisa Ashby
Ms. Ashby has collaborated with families, communities, colleagues, and other
professionals to promote learner growth and development. She has collaborated with
faculty in the school to include the members of her assigned grade level as well as
administration to help determine and meet individual student needs. Every Wednesday
there is a grade level team meeting and we collaborate with the other grade level teachers
to make sure we are all on the same page with where we are in the curriculum and also to
bounce ideas off of each other. At some of the meetings the Special Services teacher, Dr.
Charley attend to keep the homeroom teachers up to date with how their students are
doing and which students could use less time and which may need more time with each
teacher. Most importantly she meets regularly with her cooperating teacher every week to
collaborate in lesson planning to make sure she targets the learning of the whole group's
needs and also individual students' needs. Since she has been here I have observed she
and the cooperating teaching involved in more small group activities with the students
because while I work with two of our reading groups, my CT can work with the other two
groups.
2. Describe the extent to which this candidate is an active participant in the
professional learning community and works to achieve organizational goals
in order to make the entire school a positive and productive learning
environment for the students.
While here at Whittaker, Ms. Ashby has participated in the weekly 4th grade team
meetings, in which they discuss lesson planning, and concerns or suggestions on policies
and specific students. She has been able to participate and share experiences that took
place in our classrooms. These meetings are held so that teachers can reflect upon lessons
that may or may have not worked, why or why not they did, and if not how they can
make it better. She also attends bi-weekly faculty meeting. These meeting are more of a
presentation from resource teachers and administrators, and provide strategies and data
regarding specific school topics. During the last few meetings, teachers worked together
to present information from our school-wide book study topic- Mindsets, in which Ms.
Ashby was a team participant.
Ms. Ashby has had the opportunity to meet and communicate with quite a few of the
parents in the classroom. She has had quite a few parents who have come in and eat lunch
with their child so this was the main way she was able to communicate with the parents.
She made it a point to introduce herself and build a relationship with the parents. I think
this is the most important first step to benefiting the student because without the parent's
support, you can only go so far with that child. She, along with her cooperating teacher
sent home a class calendar/newsletter with the homework, standards for learning,
expectations, and special events such as field trips or testing.
4.
It is my observation that Ms. Ashby values the profession of teaching. She exhibits a
positive attitude towards Whittaker, the process of teaching and learning, students, and
parents. She has been observed working effectively with professional colleagues and
other adults. Her ability to collaborate and be a part of the learning team has proven
invaluable during her time here. During conversations with Ms. Ashby, she has
demonstrated the ability to self-reflect on and evaluate her own work and seek advice on
how to improve both as a teacher and a learner. She is willing to consider multiple
perspectives of her own performance. She has been very receptive and responsive to
professional feedback and has been witnessed to incorporating suggestions into practice. I
look forward to Ms. Ashby joining the profession!
