Orwell's1984isachillingreadforsure,andimpliesthattheomnipotentstatewillultimatelywin.
However,evenasWinstonSmithlivesouthisdaysindiminishedmanhood,heclingsontooneidea
thatifthereisanyhopeatall,itlieswiththeproles.Now,theprolesweretheordinarypeoplethe
masses,thegreatunwashed.Thesepeoplewerecannonfodderandlargelyignoredbythepowersthat
