Protocol agreement

for the distribution and use of BGI digital gravity data


between the Bureau Gravimtrique International (hereafter called BGI), represented by its Director,
and the below mentioned user Institution or Organization ( hereafter called User), represented by its
Director or authorized representative.
The data are supplied by BGI under the following conditions:
1. The acceptance by the User of the attached Terms of Use of BGI gravity database.
2. The data owner will retain copyright over the original data distributed by BGI.
3. The data will not be transmitted in any form to a third party.
4. The data may be re-processed by the user an d included into product s. Marketed products
providing point data as supplied by BGI will be t he subject of specific agreements with BGI,
which may include extra charges.
5. Any publication or product resulting from the use of the data will give acknowledgment to:

Data, products or software made available from the BGI website are mostly dedicated to support public,
researchandacademicactivities.You maynotdistributeorpublishmaterial youobtainedfromthissiteif
youdonotacceptthetermsofuse.

Generalterms
(i) Digital gravity data are provided free of charge for noncommercial use to public research or academic
institutions,ortodatacontributorsaccordingtotheconditionsgivenhere(seegeneralandspecificterms).
In all other cases, including distribution to individual or private/commercial companies, charges will be
applied.Allusersareinvitedtospecifyintheirrequesttheexpecteduseofthedataandproducts.
(ii)Dataretrievaloflarge datasetsisfacilitatedforinstitutionsorcompanies whohave contributedto the
BGI global databases. Any public research/academic or private organization interested to contribute with
anykindofgravitydata(fromland,marineorairbornesurveys)isinvitedtocontactBGI(bgi@cnes.fr).
(iii)Appropriateacknowledgmentwithabyline/credit/linkmustbegiventoboththeBureauGravimtrique
International(BGI),http://bgi.obsmip.frandtheoriginalscientists/datacontributorsbyreferencingtheir
relevantpublications.Wherecitationinformationhasbeenprovidedtousbyscientistsitisincludedwiththe
relevantdatabaseentries,andshouldbeacknowledgedwhendataareused.
(iv)Usersarestronglyencouragedtocontacttheoriginalinvestigatorsresponsiblefordatamadeavailable
on the BGI site. Where appropriate, researchers are also encouraged to consider collaboration and/or co
authorshipwithoriginalinvestigators.
(v)Dataareprovidedwiththeexpressunderstandingthattheywillnotbesoldtothirdpartiesorincludedin
anycommercialdatabases.
(vi)Datashouldnotbeusedfornavigationpurposes.

Specificterms
Relativeland&marinegravitydata
(i)Nonconfidentialornonproprietarydigitalgravitydataareprovidedfreeofchargetopublic,researchor
academicinstitutionsortodatacontributorsovergeographicareaslimitedto20x20oronthebasisofa
maximumnumberof10000datapoints(landdata)and/or100000datapoints(marinedata).Retrievaloffull
data coverage for a whole country is not included in that case. Individual or private companies will be
chargedforafixedrateunlesstheywilltocontributedatatotheBGIgravitydatabase.
(ii)Allotherrequests(forlargerdatasets,forextendedgeographicareaorforawholecountry)aswellas
massivedataretrievalwillbesubjecttoanevaluationbyBGIwhomayrequireaspecificprotocolofuseof
thedataand/oraskauthorizationoftheproprietaryinstitutions.SignatureofanyprotocolofuseofBGIdata
should be done by an authorized representative of the inquiring institution (public, research, academic or
private).Chargesmaybeapplied.
(iii) Confidential or proprietary digital gravity data also archived at BGI cannot be distributed without
permissionoftheownercompany.BGIwilltransferallrequestsofconfidentialorproprietarydatatoowner
agencies who will determine their own diffusion policies. Charges will be applied according to the data
ownerpolicies.

(iv) Users requiring gravity information at global or wide regional scales are invited to use high resolution
globalgridsofgravityanomalies(freeair,Bouguer,Isostatic)specificallydevelopedandmaintainedbyBGI
anddistributedfreeofcharge.TheyarealsoinvitedtoconsiderdirectcollaborationwithBGIforanystudy
includingtherealizationofgravity,geoidmodelsorgravitysynthesisatregionalscalesorCAL/VALactivities
usingsatelliteandgroundgravitydata.

Absolutegravitydata
Access to the Absolute gravity database is provided free of charge without any restriction. Data can be
retrievedthroughtheWebinterfaceusingthelinkbelow.Confidentialdataorproprietarydatamayappear
withrestrictedinformation(metadataonly).

WorldGravityMap(WGM)
The World Gravity Map (WGM) denotes a set of highresolution gravity anomaly maps and digital grids
computed at global scale from available reference Earth gravity and elevation models. Release 1.0 (2012)
includesasetofthreeanomalymaps(surfacefreeair,completeBouguerandisostaticanomalies)derived
fromtheEGM2008geopotentialmodelandtheETOPO1GlobalReliefModel.
