TRIBUTE TO
CHRISTINE SEXTON
Christine Sexton, our dear friend and colleague who died in October, was well known in
Bowthorpe through her voluntary work with Bowthorpe Community Partnership, Holidays
at Home and Clover Hill Community Association, the voluntary management committee for
the village hall. When Christine first became involved with the village hall 23 years ago, she
helped turn it around, raising funds, doing the book-keeping, supporting groups such as the
pre-school & toddlers, running activities like the Community Caf, organising events quizzes, arts and baking competitions, Bowthorpes Got Talent. She basically wanted the
best for the community, she was a continuous presence, always around to listen, her words
of wisdom welcome; Christine was such a lovely person and we all miss her.
"Cloverhill Hill Village Hall - the alarm has been activated,
the alarm has been activated!"
The dreaded 'phone call which meant that (a) during the day she went over the
hall or (b) at night time we would both go over to the hall, usually to find the fire doors
had not been shut properly or the alarm had not been set correctly. When I say she
I mean my lovely wife of 36 years who as you know sadly left us in October.
Chris and I moved to Bowthorpe in October 1984. Although she was in full -time
employment she fell in love with Bowthorpe and joined various committees to assist
with the progress of Bowthorpe as a community. Her true love however, (apart from
me I hope!) was soon to be Clover Hill Village Hall, first as Secretary and later as
Treasurer. She devoted as much time as she could to the running of the hall, so
much so we often joked and said she should have married the village hall instead of
me! Her greatest moment of satisfaction however came when, alongside the other
committee members (too many to mention, they know who they are) applied for and
received a National Lottery Grant. This enabled the hall to be practically rebuilt
together with inside facilities which enabled the hall to be used as an entertainment
and learning venue for Cloverhill.
Sally Evison was later employed as a 'secretary', I suppose you would call
her. Between them Chris and Sally backed and were assisted by a very able committee. Between them they made the hall into the successful charity it is today.
Finally I would like to say a huge thank you to everybody who attended Christine's
funeral and for giving her a wonderful 'send off'. I'm sure she would have been delighted to see all her friends and colleagues.
Last but not least I would publicly like to thank The Rev'd Mark Elvin for the service
at the Crematorium. I quote from his entry in the 'In Memorium' Book: "Christine will
be sorely missed by all who knew and loved her. Mrs. Bowthorpe has left a hole
bigger than she could possibly have imagined."
Christine, Rest in Peace

One of the ways you can help if you would like to give financially is
to provide bus passes to enable transport to important appointments and integration activities. Bus passes are in short supply and
at 4.80 a day, quite costly. If you would like to give in this way or
get more information on how you can get involved in supporting
refugees, please email to network@englishplus.org.uk.

ASHWELL COURT
Hello again Everyone. It seems like only yesterday I was writing this piece
but it was of course 15th October. The time really does fly.
So this is for the December/January issue. There is not for once much news
to report from Ashwell Court. Thankfully there have been no departures and
therefore no new arrivals since the ones I mentioned last month.
We had great evenings with Gary Only and Patsy Rose which I reported on
last month and will soon be enjoying our Christmas celebrations. Our big
Christmas Dinner will be held on 16 December when we all go to the Dove
at Poringland, then we have our luncheon club Christmas dinner on 22 nd
December followed by the draw for our Christmas Raffle. We also look
forward to another visit by Pat James for a great evenings entertainment.
Meanwhile all our activities have continued with exercises twice a week and
delicious luncheon club lunches every Tuesday and Thursday,
We still have our book club meetings once a month enhanced by some of
Bettys delicious cakes (these are the highlight of the meetings). Thank you
Betty.
Thats all for now except to hope that you all have a very
happy Christmas and to send you best wishes for 2016
from all at Ashwell Court.

BRADECROFT
Hello to you all. My
name is Annie. It is my privilege to
be asked to write about Bradecroft.
Firstly I would like to thank two
wonderful people who have spent
the last eight years organising
special events and all of our coach
outings, spending many of their days
and time doing just that. Hopefully
they can spend time for themselves.
However both Fay and George have
arranged and booked our Christmas
Lunch and coach for this Christmas
2015.
Hello Everyone
Well, Christmas is almost upon
us once again and much to do
before Santa arrives!
Our Children in Need event
raised 183 last month and was
a great success and we would
like to thank everyone who
attended and contributed to the
event in supporting such a good
cause. Our thanks also go to
those at Leyham Court who
made it possible, their hard
work is much appreciated.

I wonder what wildlife you have seen in our local woods? I see the odd
bird, but they flitter past so quick and are mostly up near the canopy
that its seldom I can identify them. And I dont see much else. Talking
to some friends it turns out that this must be largely my fault. They have
seen mice, deer, owls, woodpeckers, jays and I dont know what else.
Brown mice, they said. Well wood mice are brown and are the most common rodent in Britain so I guess thats what they saw. And muntjac deer, they said, they
see often: one saunters across the road early in the morning near where they live.
And that is all very believable: the Norfolk Wildlife Trust website says muntjacs are
common in woods, even going to peoples gardens if there is good cover
and talks of a population explosion.
But the mention of fallow deer is probably not credible: the NWT website
says they are not common in the wild in Norfolk. But anyway, I am clearly doing something wrong. I
could understand it if I was
taking a dog for a walk: wildlife hides away quickly and
quietly when dogs are
around. Maybe I look up too
much at the trees and the
vanishing birds and so never
spot the voles, weasels or
stoats on the ground. Maybe
I just dont stand still for long
enough. Patient waiting and
watching must be the key to
seeing shy creatures like
deer. Or maybe Im there at
the wrong time: Id be much
more likely to see foxes or
mice at night, or shrews in
the summer.
I will try to do better. But it
helps of course to know what
one is looking for, to know
what there is to see. Which
brings me back to
the question I
started with: what
wildlife have you
seen in our local
woods?
