Van Wert County EMA releases winter update
Information submitted
VAN WERT There has been a lot of
talk lately about El Nino and what affects
it might have across the United States this
year.
What really stands out is that the current
El Nino is shaping up to be the strongest
on record, Van Wert County Emergency
Management Director Rick McCoy said.
For our area in Northwest Ohio, that could
mean very little snow and warmer than normal temperatures. El Nino events in the past
can give us some idea on the winter ahead
but there are a few other factors that have
to be figured into the forecast predictions.

Who will be the donkey?
Fun game for your holiday season
plus pumpkin pancakes!
BY LOVINA EICHER
Its Thanksgiving week already! We
will have my sisters Verena and Susan
and sister Emma, Jacob, and family here
for Thanksgiving dinner and also all of
our family. I am planning to prepare two
turkeys plus all the trimmings.
Son Benjamin, 16, was excited last
week to shoot his first deer. My husband
Joe and Benjamin cut and ground all the
meat on Saturday. Joe wants to make
jerky and summer sausage with it.
Friday evening our family traveled
the seven miles to Timothy and daughter
Elizabeths house with our horses and
buggies. Elizabeth had prepared a tater
tot casserole and Timothy grilled venison burgers and steak. They wanted us
to spend the night there so Joe could go
hunting with Timothy early on Saturday
morning.
After supper was over we played
Donkey and enjoyed popcorn. For
those of you who dont know how to
play Donkey, Ill explain the best I can.
We use Rook game cards. Every
player is given three cards and spoons
are placed in the middle of the table.
Put one less spoon out than there are
players. One of the players takes the
cards that havent been passed out and
takes one card at a time and passes it to
the next player. The object of the game
is to see who gets three cards with the
same number first. So if you get a number you want, then switch it with one of
your three cards and pass it on. The first
player that gets three cards the same will
grab a spoon. One player will be left
without a spoon and will get a letter D.
The first player that has the whole word
donkey spelled out loses.
After they have lost, the other players
keep playing but arent allowed to talk

Farming is a business of
risk management preparing for potential unknowns
each year such as weather and changes in grain
prices. Grain prices are
currently lower than they
have been for many years.
Unless something drastically affects grain inventories, prices may actually go
lower in the future. Land
prices and cash rents were
steadily increasing during
the years that grain prices
were high.
Adjustments need to
occur in land prices and cash
rents for farm enterprises to
be profitable with declining grain prices. These
adjustments are beginning
to occur across the state.

project cash rents to drop
6.2 percent to 8.5 percent.
This projection is derived

Surveys were completed

The survey was conducted from February through

West Virginia is noted for its mountains and rolling hills, its historically
significant logging and coal mining
industries. West Virginia farms produce beef and dairy cattle, chickens

apples, especially Golden Delicious,
Apple Pie Baked in Apples
5 to 6 baking apples (that can stand on their own)
1 teaspoon cinnamon, or to taste
1/4 cup sugar, or to taste
1 tablespoon brown sugar
Pie crust, homemade or pre-made
Cut off the top of 4 apples and discard. Carefully remove
the inside of each apple with a spoon or melon baller, not puncturing the peel. Salvage as much as you can for the filling. For
the filling, remove skin from remaining apple(s) and slice very
thinly. In a bowl, mix apple slices with cinnamon and sugars.
Spoon filling into hollow apples. Roll out pie crust and slice into
1/4-inch strips. Cover the top of each apple with pie crust strips
in a lattice pattern. Place apples in an 8-by-8-inch baking dish.
Add just enough water to cover the bottom of the dish. Cover
with foil and bake 20-25 minutes. Remove foil and bake for an
additional 20 minutes or until crust is golden brown and apple

1 pound lean ground beef
1 large egg, lightly beaten
1 medium yellow onion 1/2 grated, the other 1/2 thinly
sliced
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon kosher salt
1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
12 slices white bread
2 tablespoons butter, softened
12 slices American cheese, optional
In a medium bowl, combine the beef, egg, grated onion, garlic powder, salt and pepper. Mix until combined. Form into thin
patties. Spread butter on one side of each slice of bread. Heat
a large heavy skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the burgers
about 3 minutes on each side. Drain on paper towels. Drain
the grease from the skillet. In the same skillet, place six slices
of bread, butter side down. Top each with a slice of cheese, if
desired, some onions, and a burger. Top with remaining slices of
cheese, if using, and bread, butter side up. Cook each sandwich
until golden brown, about 2 minutes per side. Serve with any
desired hamburger toppings. Makes 6 hamburgers.

Crappie Fishing Tips
White crappie are popular sportfish also referred to
as papermouths for the thin,
translucent flesh around their
mouths. They can be caught on
a variety of baits using different methods which makes them
accessible to many anglers year
round. Anglers should fish minnows or light-colored jigs very
slowly. Letting the bait sit still
with occasional movement usually produces good results.
Crappies are one of Ohios
easiest fish to catch and are great
for trips intended to get kids
hooked on fishing. Common in

defense has been very forceful in the first four games of

The Lady Wildcats have
been forcing turnovers at a

them into points at the other

That defense was even

the Northwest Conference

Allen East at Jefferson High

The Red and White

forced 26 turnovers (versus
15 of its own) and harried the
Lady Mustangs into 9-of-37

Our defense got us off to
a great start. Im very pleased
with the progress of our
defense and how the girls are
playing it, Jefferson mentor
Dave Hoffman said. We did
give up a few layups, especially in the second period,
but that will happen with fullcourt pressure. Were getting

The hosts continued that trend into the start of the second
stanza, getting baskets by Sarah Miller (10 points) and Devyn
Carder at 7:10 for their biggest lead of the half at 16-2
before the Mustangs finally got on the board again on a stealand-layup from Gracie Young and 5:47. Allen East handled
the ball better against the Delphos defense and at least stayed
within striking distance. They got wthin 22-12 on a deuce by
Young (7 caroms, 5 thefts) before Taylor Stroh (5 boards, 2
steals) hit the 1st-of-2 throws at 1:22 for a 23-12 halftime
bulge, Jefferson.
The Wildcats had their share of miscues in the third period
five but the Mustangs handed it back over seven times.
Thus, despite the visitors getting seven offensive boards (11-7
for the game in a 33-24 game margin), their 3-of-13 shooting
didnt allow them to get within single digits. When Miller hit a
pair of singles at 1:14, the Wildcat lead was 30-18.
The Wildcats put it away in the finale using a patience
offense controlling the ball and making Allen East chase. After
the hosts got two Wallace singles to open the stanza and the
visitors scored five straight 3-ball by Jade Meyer (5 markers) and basket by Kylie Wyss (5 counters, 12 rebounds) a
putback by Pimpas broke any momentum and a late basket by
Bailey Gorman (6 counters, 3 steals) opened the largest lead
of the final score.
Allen East ended up 4-of-6 at the line (66.7%) and with 14
fouls.
Jefferson totaled 9-of-16 at the line (56.3%) and 14 fouls.
Kenzie Hammons added three steals.
Offensively, we are moving the ball better than we were
and getting quality shots. Were handling the ball well,
Hoffman added. Id like to see us hit our free throws better
but were working hard to get there.

10 - The Herald
www.delphosherald.com
What does it mean that God should come to us as a tiny, helpless baby, born
in a stable, to parents who were basically homeless? Consider also that Mary
was probably no more than 14 or 15 years old: Joseph had doubts about the circumstances of her being with child: and, the couple was a long way from home
in a strange and distant land where they knew no one. Under these very trying
circumstances, God came into the world. And, while there are certainly a lot of
lessons to be learned from this, one of the most obvious is that we are extremely
needy beings who must rely on the goodwill and help of others. No infant could
survive without the care and sustenance of its parents (or other well-intentioned
adults). Finding no room at the inn, Mary and Joseph were forced to rely on the
kindness of strangers in bedding down at the stable. Imagine how much worse
their plight would have been without those kind shepherds. Even today, we depend on others in similar circumstances, and our hope is that we live in a world
where others will be willing to help. We often hear that the message of Christmas
is Gods willingness to help us; but, maybe the message is just as much that God
needs our help too, and that He calls on all of us to help those in need. Practice
hospitality ungrudgingly to one another. As each has received a gift, employ it for
one another, as good stewards of Gods varied grace.
Our local churches invite you to join them for their activities and services.

Looking for
my mojo
The turkey feathers have settled
and the outside Christmas lights are
blinking and winking every night.
The newest addition to our
Christmas decorations, Jingles the Elf,
is proudly displayed on his chair atop
the piano along with the new candles
and garland I purchased just after
Christmas last year. I post his picture
on Facebook and the general consensus is that hes creepy and probably
runs around our house at night while
we are sleeping. I think hes adorable
and Im OK with that.
I got smart last year and put a
post-it on Novembers calendar page
noting all the new stuff we had and a
side note that we have plenty of wrap,
bows and tags! (Can you truly have
enough? I see a wrapping paper I like
and Im pulled to it like the earth to
the sun!)
The front room is done! The kitchen is done!
Now about the living room and

look at people who inspire
us. People who have been
through what weve been
through or worse, people
who persevered and came
out stronger on the other side
of a bad day. Or thirty.
In the fast-paced society
we live in, we can forget
to focus on ourselves sometimes and to take care of
ourselves. Thats important.
We all need a soft place to
land at the end of the day,
something to make us feel
better. Because the bad times
dont last forever.
We just had Thanksgiving,
and hopefully all focused on

DEAR EDITOR:
We would like to extend a special thank you to all the local
businesses and private donors that made Turkeys for Delphos a
success. We were able to provide 65 turkeys, mashed potatoes,
corn, stuffing, and pumpkin pie to 65 struggling families this year.
Without your generous help, this would not of been possible.
This success was well earned, but families in our community struggle all year long. Its our hope that this helped lighten
their load somewhat. We look forward to you joining us again
next year to help even more families.
The committee for Turkeys For Delphos

DEAR EDITOR,
On Sunday, Nov. 15, 2015, an Open House Charity event
was held. All soap sales for that day went to support: NAMI
of Allen, Auglaize, Hardin Countys Suicide Awareness Walk,
Delphos Community Health Professionals and the Delphos
Senior Citizens Christmas Party with large gift baskets to be
raffled at their events.
A big thank you to all local banks and businesses who
allowed me to post flyers at their locations.
Thank you to all who attended this event.
Door prize winners were Edith Weiging - freshwater pearl
bracelet, Jessica Pseekos -Vintage glass bowl full of Christmas
soaps, Chris Gonzales - DoTerra starter set/diffuser, Jen
Neidert - E.O./diffuser, Mary Vonderwell - E.O./diffuser, Teri
Grubenhoff - one soap of her choice, Janet Warniment - E.O./
diffuser and Linda Gasser - soap of her choice.
Thank you to all representatives who came from the above
named charities. I raised enough money to supply you with
Basket of Soap for next year.
Sincerely,
Beth A. Hower-Brown

Christmas: a time
for surprises
The countdown to Christmas has
begun. Shoppers have just a little
more than two weeks to wrap-up their
pre-holiday duties. Based on past
experience, Ive got two warnings for
the men who read this column.
First: Beware of the wife who
says, Lets give each other sensible
gifts this Christmaslike ties and
fur coats.
The second: I know a guy who just
couldnt decide what to get his wife
for Christmas. After much thought,
he decided to get her a $50 gift certificate. That should satisfy her, he
thought, and it would keep him out
of debt.
She surprised him, however,
because she used the $50 gift certificate as a down payment on a new
diamond ring.
*******
I was shopping at a downtown
store this past weekend when a store
clerk swore the following story is
true.
A lady came in to her gift shop and
wanted a knit sweater for her dog.
The clerk asked how big the dog was,
but the woman replied that she didnt
know exactly.
Why not bring him in so I can
measure him? the clerk suggested.
No, I couldnt do that, the
woman answered. I want it to be a
surprise.
*******
If you are at a Christmas party
and you want to start an argument to
get people talking, heres a couple of
observations that are guaranteed to
divide the men from the women.
It has been said girls get better grades than boys, generally, all
through school. But men get better
jobs than women, generally, thereafter.
