TASR Issues Handling Guide

Introduction:
The purpose of this guide is to improve knowledge base for handling of Cell level issues
where TASR is degraded. Most of the cases get prolonged due to mishandling. This guide
will allow users to perform step by step analysis to know the root cause of the
degradation.

Types of TASR degradation:

1. Single Sector degradation
2. Two sector degradation
3. All sectors degradation
Following are brief possible reasons for each type of degradation

1. Single Sector degradation

Alarm on RRUs
Abnormal VSWR
Wrong TRX power configuration
Partial Sector swap
Antenna tilt issue
RF parameter discrepancy including Neighbor plan
Neighboring Cell having quality issues
Number of UPBG cards are more or less than required
Single PA fault
External interference
High blocking
Planned activities

Media Issue at site

Number of UPBG cards are more or less than required
RF parameter discrepancy including Neighbor plan
External interference

Diagnosis and handling

1. Single Sector Degradation
a. Alarm on RRUs
Check if theres any Quality alarm appearing on RRU, UPBG, FS or CC card and
handle accordingly.
b. Abnormal VSWR
Check in Diagnostics of RRU/RSU, if theres abnormality in VSWR values at PA
then handle accordingly. Following snap shots will help in finding the VSWR test

c. Wrong TRX power configuration

Check the configured power for each TRX in Configuration management. It
should be at least 20 Watt each. Following snapshot will help in finding the
configured TRX power

d. Partial Sector swap

Check onsite if the RF cables and Jumpers are installed correctly and theres no
Partial swap
e. Antenna tilt issue
Perform site Audit, the tilts of antennas should be according to the plan
f. RF parameter discrepancy including Neighbor plan
Issue might be due to incorrect configuration of RF plan and should be verified
with CM and RF teams
g. Neighboring Cell having quality issues
Check the neighboring Cell of the affected Sector for any Quality or availability
issue and handle accordingly

h. Number of UPBG cards are more or less than required

Each UPBG card is capable of 12 TRXs. If the number of UPBG cards is more or
less than required, delete the unnecessary UPBG card. To check which UPBG card
is serving which TRX, following are the snap shots along with the steps. Delete
the UPBG card which is serving the affected TRXs
Start NE Management of the BSC and go to Diagnosis Test
Start the Diagnosis of complete site by clicking the Icon NE Test

Open the Result file

Filter out the GSM Career Frequency in Test type and see which TRXs
are running on which slot of UPBG

i. Single PA fault
If Some TRXs of one band are degraded and others are not, check whether the
degraded TRXs are running on same RRU. If that RRU has some healthy TRXs as
well, the RRU must be Dual PA. Check if all degraded TRXs belong to one PA then
there is a possibility of hardware fault without any alarm. This is a very rare case.
Even if one PA is degraded theres high chance of other factors involved other
than hardware fault. Following are the steps involved to check which TRXs belong
to which PA
Start NE Management of the BSC and go to Diagnosis Test
Start the Diagnosis of complete site by clicking the Icon Ne Test
Open the Result file
Filter out GSM Career Frequency in Test type and see which TRX are
running on which PA of the RRU

If all the degraded TRXs are working on same PA then change the
RRU/RSU

j. External interference
There might be external interference like Jammers etc. affecting the services of
the sector.
k. High blocking
Check hourly stats, if TASR is degraded only when the Traffic is increased and

blocking occurs at same duration, it is suspected that expansion is required.

Escalate such issues to RF directly
l. Planned activities
Check the issue start date and time in hourly stats. Check from all concerns
department if they have done any planned activity on BSC or BTS side during the
degradation start time. Like for example in some cases after performing CMP
load balancing, a sector of site may be degraded. In such case escalate the issue
to concern department

2. Two Sector degradation

a. Sector Swap
Check all the RF cables and jumpers, they should be properly installed. Remove
the swap if found
b. Number of UPBG cards are more or less than required
See in previous topic: Number of UPBG cards are more or less than required
c. Wrong TRX power configuration
See in previous topic: Wrong TRX power configuration
d. High Blocking
Check hourly stats, if TASR is degraded only when the Traffic is increased and
blocking occurs at same duration, it is suspected that expansion is required.
Escalate such issues to RF directly
e. RF parameter discrepancy including Neighbor plan
Issue might be due to incorrect configuration of RF plan and should be verified
with CM and RF teams
f. External interference
There might be external interference like Jammers etc. affecting the services of
the sector

3. All sectors degradation

a. Media Issue at site
Check for any Packet drops and Clock source or SCTP alarms. Escalate such
issues to TXN team if theres no power issue at site
b. Number of UPBG cards are more or less than required
See Topic: Number of UPBG cards are more or less than required

c. RF parameter discrepancy including Neighbor plan

Issue might be due to incorrect configuration of RF plan and should be verified
with CM and RF teams
d. External interference
There might be external interference like Jammers etc. affecting the services of
the sector

Joint Visit and escalation to RF

If TASR issue is not resolved by performing above checks, then call Joint Visit and
escalate the issue to RF team for further investigation.
