PART I - KINETICS
Problem 1. Hemoglobin (Hb) carries oxygen through our bodies by forming a complex with it:
Hb(aq) + O2(aq) HbO2(aq).
In a solution of hemoglobin exposed to oxygen, the concentration of hemoglobin fell from
1.2 nmolL-1 (1 nmol = 10-9 mol) to 0.80 nmolL-1 in 0.10 s (1 s = 10-6 s). What was the
average rate at which hemoglobin reacted with oxygen, in moles per liter per second?

Problem 2. Another important reaction that occurs in the body and widely used in industry is for
the generation of hydrogen and oxygen gas through decomposition of water:
2H2O(l) 2H2(g) + O2(g).
If the average reaction rate is reported as 1 (mmol H2O)L-1h-1, what is the average rate over the
same period of time in terms of the production of O2?

Problem 3. Given the two plots below, what is the order of the observed reaction? Please justify.

Examples taken from Chemical Principles - Atkins and Jones, 4th ed.

Problem 4. Consider the decomposition reaction of nitrogen dioxide gas, which is a toxic air
pollutant:
2NO2(g) 2NO(g) + O2(g).
The rate law has been determined experimentally to be:
reaction rate = k[NO2]2.
a) What is the order of this reaction? Please justify.

b) At 300 oC, the reaction rate was measured to be 5.410-3 molL-1s-1 with an initial
concentration of 0.1 mol NO2. Find k.

c) If the activation energy Ea = 150 kJ/mol for the endothermic reaction, find the new value
of k at a temperature of 150 oC, at which the decomposition begins in the atmosphere.

Examples taken from Chemical Principles - Atkins and Jones, 4th ed.

Problem 5. You are suddenly instilled with feelings of euphoria upon seeing this test inhaling
nitrous oxide, or N2O. This common anaesthetic and major greenhouse gas decays according to
first-order kinetics and has a rate constant of k = 0.76 s-1 at 1000 K.
a) Calculate the number of half-lives for the concentration of N2O to fall to one-eighth of its
initial value.

b) What is the time required for the process in part a)?

Problem 6. Life moves pretty fast --- thanks to catalysts!

a) List the 3 main features of a catalyst (what it does, how it does it; any order).
i.
ii.
iii.
b) What is a homogeneous catalyst?

c) How does a catalyst affect (please circle one)

PART II - GASES
Problem 7. What is the most abundant greenhouse gas in Earths atmosphere?

Problem 8. Identify the gas species (possibly more than one) formed from each reaction. (Just
the formula is fine, no need to balance the whole equation)
a) NaHCO3(s) + CH3COOH(l)

(common science fair experiment)

b) NaN3(s)

(rapid, life-saving decomposition reaction)

c) CO2(g) + 4H2(g)

(Sabatier reaction, used for fuel and water in space)

Problem 9. Suppose I have 2 moles of hydrogen gas and 1 mole of helium gas, the two samples
individually contained inside massless, isolated balloons. Assume STP conditions (0 oC, 1 atm).
Use the following answer choices for parts a) - d) of this question:
1. Hydrogen

2. Helium

3. Equal

a) Which sample has a greater mass?

b) Which sample has a higher density?
c) Which sample has a higher average kinetic energy per molecule?
d) Which sample has a higher average velocity per molecule?
e) You decide to heat the balloon of helium isobarically until the new temperature is 100 oC.
What is the new volume?

Examples taken from Chemical Principles - Atkins and Jones, 4th ed.

Problem 10. Calculate the relative rates of diffusion between oxygen and carbon dioxide across
the membrane of the lung.

Problem 11. Air is a source of reactants for many chemical processes. A certain sample of dry air
of total mass 1.00 g consists almost entirely of 0.76 g of nitrogen and 0.24 g of oxygen. Calculate
the partial pressures of these gases when the total pressure is 1.0 atm.
