Topic Area Specifics

The topic area to be reviewed and evaluated is ancient history. The grade level

that will be focused on is ninth grade. A minor focus will also go to sixth grade. There are

forty-two ninth grade students in the school. The ancient history course is a required

course in the ninth grade. There is one ancient history teacher in the school and the

students are separated into two classes. There are thirty-three sixth grade students in the

school. The world cultures course is a required course in the sixth grade. There is one

world cultures teacher in the school and the students are separated into two classes.

There are currently no special needs students in the sixth or ninth grades at Frederica

Academy.

Curriculum Review

Ancient History is a required course at Frederica Academy and is offered in the

ninth grade. This course covers ancient and classical civilizations in the first semester and

Medieval European history and the Italian Renaissance in the second semester.

Civilizations covered are Mesopotamia, Egypt, Persia, Kingdom of Israel, China, Greece,

Rome, Islam as well as specific medieval institutions and early European nation-states.
Speaking and writing skills are stressed and corollary original source materials are used

to supplement the text. Students undertake an important group project (presentation and

reenactment of a specific ancient civilization) in the second semester. In addition, the

students write a research paper on different assigned topics. The Georgia Performance

Standards (GPS) that are addressed are SSWH1 – SSWH6. The time covered is 3500

BCE – 1500 CE. These standards address the civilizations studied in this ancient history

course that are mentioned above.

World Cultures is taught in the sixth grade at Frederica Academy. Although, the

focus of this collection evaluation will be on the ancient history, there will be some

attention to the world cultures course as there is a small overlap in materials studied. Part

of the first semester in world cultures is dedicated to an examination of the Middle East.

After learning the maps and geography of the region, students explore the complex

history, religions, and culture of the Middle East, with an emphasis on the rise and

influence of Islam. The unit wraps up with a several-week-long study of the Palestinian

conflict. In the second semester, students apply the same approach of learning geography,

history, culture, religions, and current events to Africa and China. Two weeks are

dedicated to preparing a research paper. Since this course is not studied in the public

school, I can not link this to a sixth grade GPS. Some of this subject area is studied in the

seventh grade in public school. GPS SS7H4 describes the development of the three major

religions that originated in the Middle East covering the origins of Judaism through 1258

CE.
Collection Analysis

I first focused on a use-centered evaluation. I asked the media specialist about the

ninth grade ancient history project. She explained that the project includes a research

paper and a presentation for the entire school of an ancient civilization chosen by the

teacher. The students set up and decorate the lunch room to look like the chosen

civilization. They dress in appropriate clothing of that time period, serve food from that

time, present short plays, and more. For the research paper, students are given a variety of

topics from a specific ancient civilization. She also said that during the time of the

ancient history project, almost every book that we have in that area is checked out. When

more than one student has the same topic, the second student will probably have to go to

the public library for print sources. I also talked to the teacher about the project and the

research paper that is assigned. She felt like there was a need for materials in the media

center in this topic area. She requires at least three print sources for the research paper

and would like to see more quality sources for her students. She was not as concerned

with the use of print materials for the gathering of information to prepare for the

reenactment project. However, she did say it would be nice to have some books on

culture and daily life for this project.

I next started a collection-centered evaluation to measure the size and depth of the

collection. The media center has an older copy of the H.W. Wilson Senior High School

Library Catalog. I started with this to get an idea of some recommended titles for this

topic area. I also needed to get a better idea of what Dewey numbers would include

information from this time period. I found information in 292-298 (religion), 709 (art),
900-916 (general history), and 930-940 (ancient civilizations). I found the H.W. Wilson

publication to be an excellent starting point. I checked the catalog using a variety of

keywords to determine the materials that are in the media center on this topic, but found

it easier to use the Dewey numbers that I got from H.W. Wilson. The catalog search

results showed the following number of books in each of the areas searched:

292-298 18 books

709 40 books

900-916 112 books

930- 940 57 books

I next went to the shelf to examine the collection directly and see the physical

condition and content of the books. My focus while I was evaluating the books was on

the ninth grade project and research paper. I found that the selection was very small and

many of the books were more like pamphlets. I was not concerned with the age of the

books considering the subject area being evaluated, but some of the books (especially the

paperback books) were clearly worn. It was encouraging that some of the books in the

H.W. Wilson catalog were on the shelf, but not enough were there. The quantitative data

shows that there are not enough books in this subject area to support the curriculum

including the project and the research paper. The number of books seems like it should be

enough to support the number of students, but the quality of the books is weak and there

are gaps in some areas. For example, there are no books on the shelf with the Dewey

number 933 (History of ancient Palestine), 934 (History of ancient India), and 935

(history of ancient Mesopotamia and Iranian Plateau/Persia). In addition, there are no

books with the Dewey number 295 (Zoroastrianism), 296 (Judaism) and 297 (Islam).
Also, taking into consideration the teachers requirement of three print resources, more

materials in this area are needed.

The overlap with the sixth grade world cultures course is in the area of the Middle

East including the Kingdom of Israel and some ancient religions (Judaism, Islam, and

Christianity). It is difficult to include the multicultural variable with this topic. I feel like

it is multicultural in itself because of the topic. It includes most of the ancient

civilizations and religions. However, I do think it would be nice to include a few titles on

this topic written in Spanish because the Spanish language is taught at Frederica at every

grade level beginning with Kindergarten. Thus, the books would be useful for students in

other classes and grades. These materials will be highlighted in yellow.

I chose to evaluate the non-print material in the media center separately. The

collection includes seven hundred and sixty DVDs/VHSs. Of these, seven items relate to

the ancient history topic. Although the quality of the few audiovisual items is good, they

are rarely checked out and used by the teachers. After talking the teacher, I realized that

she did not use these audiovisual materials because she did not realize that we had them.

My focus in this area will be on trying to fill the gaps, rather than focusing on the areas

where we already have something. The areas that are needed to cover all civilizations and

religions in ancient history are on Palestine, India, Egypt and China. Also, I will look to

add material on the religions of Judaism and Islam. The format to be added will be DVD

only because the school is moving away from purchasing VHS.
