Analysis of Equality U video
1. Describe something in the documentary that shocked or saddened you and explain why.
There are over 200 United States University and colleges that have clear policies that
directly discriminate against gay, bisexual, lesbian and transgender students: also abbreviated as
LGBT students. A good example is that of Liberty University where there are strict rules against
lesbian and gay students. Such students are subjected to disciplinary consequences and even
forced counseling and even expulsion. In the movie Equality U, a very emotional story of 33
young college aged LBGT is shown as they embark on a bus ride that takes two months to face
up to homophobia and encourage LBGT in campuses of faith. It was so saddening to hear how
students suffer from school rules simply because they have a different view on sexuality.
The story on the number of students who have failed to achieve their educational dreams and
even have gone to the extreme level of committing suicide for the being denied the chance to
practice their choice. Christianity based schools have been known to be encouraging this
discriminatory act by citing their reasons from the Bible. It was very encouraging seeing very
smart and God loving young students. Such students have been trying to help their friends who
have been struggling with the school rules denying their friends the right to exercise their human
rights.
2. About 10 minutes into the film, the Cofounder for Soulforce, when referring to Liberty
University students and administrators, said, These folks are victims of misinformation.
What did he mean? Use examples stated by either Liberty students or Equality Riders. (5

lesbianism, gay and straight relationship should be treated equally in schools. Those who believe
the act is evil and is prohibited by the bible also get the opportunity to explain their position. A
good example is when the movie reached 10 minutes from the start when Liberty University
students and administrators referred to the riders as folks who are suffering from misinformation.
The reason for referring to them as victims who suffer from misinformation is because they also
use the scripture to explain their position. Activists explained that they are also of God, and they
believe that LGBT are also recognized and loved by God just the same way those who practice
straight relationship. According to Liberty University Students, lifting information from the bible
to explain their position was simply a misinformation, and there is no ground on that. Equality
riders, on the other hand, believe that Christian colleges who oppose LGBT acts citing spiritual
reason are the one who are interpreting the bible in a wrong way.
Citing one of the examples given by one of the Equality riders who explained that when
she was chased away because of her sexual orientation, it was not God who chased her, but His
children did chase her. One rider gives the other example make clear that the issues are not about
who is practicing evil but what matters is who will be in hell. He challenged their colleges to
stop focusing on their acts as being an evil act as the scripture presents cases of homosexual and
lesbianism as well.
3. What do you see as the ultimate goal/purpose of the Equality Riders?
The ultimate goal of the 33 young activists in Equality rider is to go round and let known
that LGBT students are just students the other ones and their right of choice should be. Through
the ride and the public debates with the religious schools, they intend to help students who are
suffering silently and help the administration know that they deserve a better treatment. Though
this journey, Equality riders believe that they will be able to change their perception on LGBT
students and be chance to pursue their educational dreams without fear of being discriminated.
