responsesratherthansharedunderstandings.Andyet,
asclientscontinuetocommissionicons,howshould
architectsapproachthequestionofmeaningin
architecture?
StyleWorry,asReynerBanhamcalledit,hasrecurredsincethe
19thcenturywithitsexpanded,competingchoiceofarchitectural
languages.Banhamsphraserespondedtohisteacher,Nikolaus
Pevsner,whohadassertedaconfrontationalideafollowingthe
BattleoftheStyles.InPioneersoftheModernMovement(1936)he
wrotethatGropiusandtheBauhaushadcreatedtheonetruestyle
ofthecentury.But,inasecondpronouncementinthe1960s,
Pevsnerlamentedthatwehadlapsedfromthissingleorthodoxyinto
acacophonyofhistoricisms:NeoExpressionism,NeoArtNouveau,
NeoThisandThat.Asthearbiterofmoderntaste,Pevsnerdeplored
thishydraheadedpluralism.Yetitwaspartlymotivated
byapopularreactionagainstthereducedInternationalStyle,which
hadtobefaced.
Banham,wishingtokeepopenchoiceofakind,respondedwitha
newwayofsettinglimits.Hefixedadateinculturalevolutionfora
newtaboo,limitinginfluencestothoseafter1918.Suchadate
wouldacknowledgetheFirstMachineAge,andthepostwarsocial
reality.Ineffect,anystylecouldbeappropriatedaslongasit
derivedfromrecenttechnologyandEarlyModernism.Banhams
styleanxietywasofcourseveryreal,andhadbeenprecededby
countless19thcenturytracts,especiallythoseconnectingpersonal
identityandmoralitywithacertainstyleoflife.WhatistobeDone?
wasonefamoustitleandquestion;HowShouldWeLive?its
architecturalequivalent,andinartPaulGauguinposedthesupreme
setofModernistquestions,inhispaintingof1897:DouVenons
Nous/QueSommesNous/OAllonsNousthatis,Wheredowe
comefrom,whoarewe,wherearewegoing?Theexistentialtitle
asksacosmicandspiritualquestion,inspiredasitturnsoutbya
religiouscatechism,butitisalsoanationalanduniversalquestion.
Thechoiceofawayoflivinganddyingwasachoiceofstyle,even
fortheatheistGauguinwhenhewassearchingforanauthenticway
oflivinginTahiti,andclosertonature.Muchlater,inthe70s,
HaroldBloomshowedthatsimilarquestionsofstyleandidentity
alsodominatecontemporaryliterature.TheAnxietyofInfluence
mentionsvariousstrategiesforModerniststoappropriatetheideas
andstyleoftheirmentors.Onecouldextendthemoderntraditionin
awaythatwasnewoldbycreativemisreadingandswerving,orby
covertborrowingandtransformation.
InlaterlifePevsnerembracedtheplural,praisingJohnNashforhavinganice
senseofassociationalproprietyinpractisingfourstyles,includingHindu
fortheBrightonPavilion
Inarchitecturethetraditionofthenewcouldtakeonadecidedly
personalcharacter,asFrankLloydWrightandLeCorbusier
showed.Andthen,followingthePioneers,countlesscelebrity
architectsafterthe1920srevealedthelogicofselfbranding.What
startsasapersonalsearchforidentityandauthenticitymakeit
newandoriginalleadsbymarketlogictoasignaturestyle,
becausearchitectsneedapredictableflowofclients.Sogenuine
character,Wrightsromanticbeliefinbeingtruetohimself,
morphedintocaricature,especiallyinsomelateworks.Styleas
stereotype,bythe1960s,becameaproblemofourtimeinallthe
arts.
Inarchitecturetheroadtosuccessleadsinexorablytobigness
biggerofficeschasingbiggercommissionsthenclich.Large
officesareusuallypowerlesstobreakthissyndrome,thetight
couplingoflatecapitalismandhugeprojects.Itisnotasifonecan
dropoutofthenastylogic,asbankersandpoliticiansarguedinthe
leaduptothecrashof2007/8.JeanClaudeJuncker,arbiterof
EUeconomicpolicy,laterputitinwordsthatepitomisethe
impotenceofleaders:weallknowwhattodo[economically],we
justdontknowhowtogetelectedafterwevedoneit.Inother
words,liketodaysEurodebtof1.2trillion,itisaconspiracy
betweentheplayersinthegame.Inthemutuallyhypocriticalsociety
theequationreads,cynicalpoliticians+cynicalpublic=mainstream
syndrome.Or,astheheadofCitibankputitduringthe2007vortex:
aslongasthemusicisplaying,youvegottogetupanddance.
Politicians,economists,artistsandarchitectshavetokeepdancing;
toleavetheflooristodie.Conformitytothesystemcomeswith
success,anddominatesthearchitecturalofficelargerthan50
designers,whichiswhyRichardRogerstried(andfailed)inthe
1970stokeepbelowthistippingpoint.Thesamelogicdominates
theartmarketandleadstotherecognisablestylethatkeeps
reputationsinplaceandproductssaleable.Anartististhuspressed
toimitatehimself,tomakeselfforgeriesasRobertHughessaidof
GiorgiodeChirico.ThisMetaphysicalpainterlatercopiedhis
earlystyle,making57PiazzasdItalia(likeaHeinzSoupCorpon
autopilot).Veryfewartists,suchasPicasso,trytooutwittheir
followersandjumpfromonemodetothenext(raceaheadofbeauty
asheputit)butevenhe,towardstheend,kepttohisdistinctive
LateStyle.
Criticssoondefinedthisgenresopositively(recentLondonexhibits
areLateRembrandtandLateTurner)thatitgeneratedanew
anxiety.IrememberEisenmanandGehryarguingwitheachother
overwhohadbetterunderstoodwhatitreallymeanstobeLate,as
ifyourlaststylewerethelastwordinauthenticity.Ihaveargued,
since1978,foracollectiveversionofthisquandary:thatLate
ModernismismoredominantthanPostmodernism,evenifitmeans
alatearrivalatthepartyofabstraction.Sucharesometimeironies
ofstylisticterms(Early,Middle,High,Late,Post).EHGombrich
pointedout,inhisimportanthistoricalstudyNormandForm,the
originandadequacyofstylisticlabels,atextwhichdeserves
attentiontodaywhenthereismorethantheusualangst.
LatePicasso(Chair,1961)wasoneofthefewartistswhotriedtojumpfrom
onemodetothenext,butevenhesettledintohisLatestyle
Towardsanimpersonalstylethegravitasoforganisation
Inevitablythereactionagainstthecultofpersonalityhassetin
amongtheyoung,andrecentdigitaldesigners,epitomisedby
FarshidMoussavisTheFunctionofStyle(2015).Thisthethirdin
herseries,followingTheFunctionofOrnament(2006)andThe
FunctionofForm(2009)isabeautifullyproducedbook,much
largerthantheprevioustwo.Itanalyses220schemesproposedsince
the1990s.LiketheKoolhaastomeS,M,L,XL,itisarobust
referencebookwhichstudentslovethekindpopularsince1995
withTschumi,Hollandadozenothericonicarchitects.LikeRems
recentVeniceBiennale,thebookispartlyconcernedwithelements
andtypologiesasanantidotetothepersonalcelebritystyle.
Significantlythough,sheconcernsherselfwithmanyrecenticonic
buildingsandsoherpolemichasmorerelevancewhereitfacesthis
problematicsyndromeofourtime.
IdeclareaninterestasafriendandsometimeclientofFarshid,full
ofadmirationforherpersonalstyleandsteelyindependence,butit
doesntfollowthatIagreewithherargument.Rather,Ithinkwhere
itispositivethereismuchtolearnandwhereitisnegative,itis
questionable.So,aquicklookattheshortcomings,first.
LateEisenman:theCityofCultureinSantiagodeCompostela,Spain
Moussaviconsidersmanyaugustwriterssincethe18thcentury,
fromFrance,GermanyandAmerica,whowrestlewithstyle
Durand,Semper,Riegl,Wlfflin,Giedion,Panofsky,Gombrich,
VenturiandEisenman,amongothers.Fromthisoverviewshebuilds
uphernegativecasethatstyletodayisnotconcernedwiththe
representationofexternalnarratives.Hersisalonglistofexternal
subjectsthatcannotberepresented,suchasthepast,orthepresent
zeitgeist,ornationality,orauthorship(thecelebritystyle).Rather
Moussaviisconcernedwithrepresentationofinternalorder,that
is,architecturalfunctionsandtheuniqueassemblyoftypesolutions.
Buildings,shewrites,followingGillesDeleuze,aremanifoldsand
multiplicitiesofparticularfunctionsandformalsystems.The
architectassemblesalloftheseelementsintoacoherentbuiltform
anddeterminesitsaestheticpresence(p39).
ForMoussavi,abuildingstyleisasingularassembly,notashared
signifyingsystembecause,asshestatesinpreviousbooks,general
significationisnotpossibletoday.Giventheabsenceofshared
understandingincontemporarysociety,itisnotpossibleforbuilt
formstoconveymeaningthroughsignification(p37).Thatwasthe
mistakeofPostmodernistsandsemiologists.Rather,eachtime
architectsassembleabuiltformtoserveanactivityofdailylife
(working,shopping,etc)theycreateaclusterofaffects,or
intensitieswhichspreadoutwardfromthethisnessofaform,not
communicatinganythingorsignifyingaspecificmeaning(p37).
AgainDeleuzeisinvokedtojustifythisnominalism,andinthe
weaksensethateverybuildinginhistoryisasingularassemblyof
variousthings,itistrue.Butunhelpful,especiallysincearchitecture
isasocialartshotthroughwithconventions,stereotypes,wordsand
quotations,especiallythosefromoutsidearchitecture.More
importantly,architectsintendtocommunicatespecificmeanings.If
youdoubtthis,readtheexplanationsthatusuallyaccompanytheir
buildings.
OrbetterlookatherdesignfortheJohnLewisDepartmentStorein
Leicester(p532).Itisbasedonarabesqueornament,thekindof
laceworkpatternsthiscompanysoldinthe19thcentury.Each
whirlingtendrilisaconventionalsignofthepast,repeatedand
flippedingeniouslyinseveraldifferentwaystoproducejustthekind
ofdecoratedshedthatRobertVenturiadvocated,andto
communicatewhatishappeninginside.Thebuildingisamore
convincingexampleofthisstylethanpreviousbuildings,more
elegantandfunctionallyrelevant.Forinstance,theornamental
patternrecallsclothes;itscreensandlightensthespace,sothat
shopperscantryonclotheswelllitbutwithoutfeelingoverexposed.
Itishardtothinkofamoresemanticornamentalskin,intherecent
iconictradition,donewithsuchaplomb.Youwouldhavetobe
asleepnottounderstandhowitcommunicatestheproductsand
valuesofthestore.Moussavihereovercomesthediseaseofour
time,deathbyshopping.
FOA,JohnLewisDepartmentStore,Leicester:oldpatternsoftextilessold
herebecomethepretextforthesemanticsandfunctionofthisdepartment
store,oneofthemostinventiveusesofornamentonthePostmodern
decoratedshed
Whythedisjunctionbetweentheoryandpractice?Herinsistenceon
thethisnessofformgivesahint.Itrecallsthewriterswhoinsisted
apoemshouldbe,notmean,orcriticslikeSusanSontag,who
wereAgainstInterpretation,orartistswhoweredogmatic
abstractionists.Inotherwords,wearebackatBanhamspointof
rupturewiththepast,thatis,the1918taboo.Orelsefurther
along,withClementGreenbergsstricturesagainstrepresentation
exceptforinternalrepresentationadefiningaspectofLate
Modern,autotelicart.MoussaviscomparisonofEarlyModern
1910swithpost1990digitalarchitecturefollowsthisrestriction.It
betraysherowntasteandvalues,hernormsandformsasGombrich
mightsay,andloadsthediceagainstthosesystemsofmeaningshe
assertsareimpossibletoday.
Inspiteofsuchconstantassertionspeoplewillgoonbeing
incorrigibleandunderstandbystyletheusualthings:primarily,the
similaritiesandrhythmsofform,constructionandbuilding
materials;secondarily,thecommunicationofastrong,convincing
characterormood;andthird,somespiritandassociativemetaphor.
Styleisusedbythepublicjustasarethewordsdemocratic,
civilisationandspiritual.Theyclassifyholisticpropertiesand
attitudes,familyresemblancesasWittgensteinputit,overlapping
qualities.Oftentheaffirmationofvalue,andthejudgementofa
work,isperceivedashavinggreatstyle.Onemaytrytooverthrow
thisusageinagoodcausehereforimpersonalitybutthis
restrictionworksforonlyasmallpercentageofpeople.Whatislost
insuchcallstoorderisthefreedomofstylisticchoice,andthe
meaningthatemergesthroughtheoppositionofstyles.
Mostcuriously,giventhehistoricaldiscussion,Moussavidoesnot
exploretheimplicationsoftheimpersonalstylerecommendedby
TSEliotinliterature,bysomanywriterssuchasJohnSummerson,
andtheclassicistsandhighModernistsinarchitecture.Shedoesnot
discussAugusteChoisysdrawingsofhistoricalarchitectures.These
thinlineaxonsmadedifferentperiodslook,asBanhamoften
remarked,asiftheywereproducedbythatgreatarchitect,Anon.
Indeed,thethousandsofdrawingsshereproducesandtheirgrey
digitalrenditionslookasifonearchitectdesignedall220projects.
LikeChoisysdrawings,arepresentationalsystemhasdoneaway
withchanginghistoryandpalpablepresence,tobringoutthe
generic,andtheideasbehinddesign.
Architectsintendto
communicatespecificmeanings.
Ifyoudoubtthis,readthe
explanationsthatusually
accompanytheirbuildings
Metaphoricalanalysisof30StMaryAxe.TheGherkinisonlyoneamong
severalenigmaticsignifiersbuiltintotheformalproperties,some(suchas
bulletsandmissiles)whichhaveaparanoidcharge,othersafriendly,

Architecturalideas,ofcourse,canbeagreatvirtue.Andaswiththe
grandestandhigheststylegravitasfunctionalformalsomakesa
workappearinevitable,aforceofhistory,andnatural.Butactually
herrenditionsareachoice,anediting,anillusion.AsOscarWilde
toyedwiththeidea,Tobenaturalissuchaverydifficultpose
tokeepup.Yes,andespeciallyintheageofecology,whenitisa
necessity.
Heretheimpersonalstyle,anditsillusion,servestheanalysisof
buildingtype,andrevealsmorphologicaltruths.Forinstance,the
organisationoftowersintoeitheracentralorasymmetriccore;or
whatshetermsasseveraldifferentcoefficientsoforganisation.
Fosters30StMaryAxe(akatheGherkin)isdissected,inher
typicaltwopagelayout,intomechanicalthinlinediagramswith
sevencaptionswhichelucidatethestyle.WhatistheGherkins
stylenotedatthetoprightpage?Working/Tower/Central
Core/PeripheralAtrium.Acrossontheoppositepageareher
clusterofaffects,clusteringhopefully,tellingyoutheperceptible
affecthereisRotundity,Conicality,Latticing,Twisting,
Differentiating,Collectivity,Communication,Transparency.There
areseveralobviousproblemshere.Noone,exceptaconscientious
student,isgoingtolisttheseaffectsasstylisticclassifiers;orknow
whatafewofthemmeanintheGherkin(whatisLatticinghere?).
Also,theoverlookedstrengthoftheiconisthewayitincorporates
multiplefunctionswithmultiplemetaphors:itisnotjusttheusual
oneliner.

whichanalysesthebuiltformoftheprojectinrelationtootheroffice

ButtheconceptualandsemanticproblemofTheFunctionofStyleis
thatthetwolistsbecomeredundantandtautological,especially
giventhedrawings.Andtheyaremerelists,notholistic
interpretationsofaparticularbuilding.Mostproblematicasfaras
styleisconcernedisthefactthattheydonotrevealtheamountof
sharedformalattributes,thestatisticalfrequencythatturnsusage
intoeitheracommonandreigningstyle,orelsethesignaturemode
ofFrankLloydWrightandGehry.
Aestheticsingularity
TheimpressiveaspectsofTheFunctionofStylearenotreallyabout
styleperseexceptfortheimpersonalgravitasofthe1,000
drawings.However,astrengthofthebookisthesuccinct
comparisonofmanybuildings.Theseilluminatefunctional
assemblies,forinstancewhatshecallscontinuousbalconiesin
residentialslabs.Andthissharpensherpractice,forMoussaviis
buildingseveralversionsofthissyntagmwithgreatstyle.They
areallminimalist,andtakeadvantageofherfunctionalinsights.
Andhercomputeriseddiagramsaresuperiortothoseofthefamous
historyofBanisterFletcher,arobusttomethatgrewfatonehundred
yearsago,throughits16editionsofcomparativearchitecture.
ForMoussavi,asforhermentorsRenzoPianoandRemKoolhaas,
thebasicapproachisfunctionalistbut,likePostmodernists,they
varythestyleforthejobasEeroSaarinenputthegoal.Howcan
weexplaintheseemingcontradiction?Onclosereading,theparadox
partlydissolves,sinceMoussaviadvocatesthesingularityof
eachbuildingasaparticularassemblyofdifferentdeterminants.
Also,sheadvocatestheendlessappropriationofprevioussolutions,
theimitationforwhichOMAandothershavebeenvilifiedbut
onlyaslongastheparticularassemblybreaksfrom
conventions.Forinstance,theYokohamaFerry
Terminalgeneratesnewencountersdisruptshabitsandthesense
ofmonumentalitybymergingwiththelandscape,and
reconfiguringeverydaylife.Realismbecomesmagical.
AsSurrealistsadvocated,clichandboredomcanbeturnedontheir
heads.
Whilemonumentsbeforethe
19thcenturyhadaclearersetof
meaningsandiconography,the
iconicbuilding
nowdependsmoreonasetof
looseassociationsthanon
acceptedconventions
AtonepointMoussavievenadvocatesapoliticalroleforthis
radicalestrangement,forembracingtheeverydaytheordinary
inanalteredway.ShequotesthephilosopherJacquesRancireand
hisDissensus:OnPoliticsandAesthetics(2010)insupportofthe
wayeverydaylifecanbedisruptedbydissensusaredistribution
ofthesensible(p39).Thisnotionwasactuallythecoinage
ofAdhocistsandPostmodernistswaybackinthe1970s,whenthey
weretryingtoresistconsensusarchitecture,thedominationofthe
InternationalStyle,themidcultbuildingthatwaseatingupevery
airportandrestaurant.
Obviouslydissensusiseasiersaidthandonesince,in40years,the
environmenthasbecomeprogressivelymorehomogenised.Andthe
1,000drawingsinthebooksupportthegeneric,notsocialpluralism
oridentity.Besides,aestheticaffectsareweaksocially,andifthey
aregoingtocommunicatearadicalpoliticalnature,
theirdissensushastobeturnedintoemphaticsigns.Itisratherlike
theLondonskylinecampaigntoday,whichinvokesprotectedviews
andformalnormsinordertofighttheinfluxofoligarchs.
So,whileIapplaudtheintentionsofMoussaviasmuchasher
minimalistanddramaticbuildings,theyleavethepressingquestions
ofpolitics,stereotypeandmeaningunresolved.Shetreatstheiconic
buildingsabout100inthebookasreceptaclesforindividual
aestheticresponse.Whilethishasthevirtueofsupportingpluralism
ofonetype(singularity),itoverlooksthecollectivesocialmeaning
ofstyle,thesharedwaybuildingtypessignifybecausethey
aresostereotyped,especiallytoday.Alsoherdenialoftheshared
meaningdeniestheintentionsofarchitectsandfailstogripthe
majorarchitecturalproblemoftheiconicbuilding:itslackof
responsibilityforiconographyandiconology.
Itistimetoreflecthardonthis.Fordespitemanypubliccritics
attackingthegenre,andDeyanSudjicandRowanMooredeclaring
itdeadsincethecrashof2007,iconicbuildingshaveonlyincreased
innumber.Letmerepeatthepressingsyndrome:ificonsare
constructedwithasmuchfrequencyastheyhavebeensincethe
1990s,andglobalcelebritysocietyshowsaneverincreasing
dominanceofthemediaandpolitics,thentheprofessionbetter
sharpenitstheoryandpracticeofthisoverpoweringgenre.
OMAwonthecompetitionfortheCasadaMsicainPortowithaproposal
thatthepresssawasresemblingadiamondthatfellfromthesky
Theiconicbuildingandenigmaticsignifiers
Thepresentsituationhascomeaboutforglobalreasons,whichI
havetriedtopickapartinseveralbooks,includingTheIconic
Building,ThePowerofEnigma(2005).Thefirstandstrongest
reasonfortheriseoftheiconisthedeclineoftheconsensual
monument:thedeclineofreligiousandsocialnarrativesthat
sustainedthepublicrealmanditsdiscourse.Aftertherupturesof
Modernismandmodernisation,architectsasmuchasglobalclients
losttheirconvictionastowhattheyshouldsignifyandbuild.
Metanarrativesbecamedoubted,societiesfragmentedintopluralist
tastecultures,globculttookoverfromnationalcultures,commerce
begantodominateothervalues,thesuperrichsettheagenda,
politiciansfailedtoleadthesecausesactedtogetherandbecame
awellknownsyndrome.
However,theshiftfrommonumenttoiconisnotfullyappreciated.
Whilemonumentsbeforethe19thcenturyhadaclearersetof
meaningsandiconography,theiconicbuildingnowdependsmore
onasetoflooseassociationsthanonacceptedconventions,moreon
connotationsthandenotations.Hencethesetofenigmaticsignifiers
thatcharacterisethisreigningapproach.Thesuggestedmetaphorsof
theiconicbuildingmaypointseveralways,butinthebestcases
theyheadinappropriateandrelateddirections.Theyconvergein
perspective,ifneverfinallymeetasaclosedmeaning.These
directionsincludethefunctionofthebuildingtask,itsuse,butalso
themanyopenmeaningsofafastchangingglobalculture.
WhatIhavefoundinanalysingiconicbuildingssincethe1990sis
that,positively,thecommonthemesexistbutaresometimesveiled.
Providingcoherencearethesuggestedcosmicandnaturalcodes.
Suchpatternsalludetothebody,ortogrowingnature;ortothings
suchasminerals,oruniversalprocessesthatunderliethelawsof
nature(suchasthespiralofthevortex,hurricaneandgalaxy).These
sharedorganisationalmetaphorsemergefromprojectsasdesigners
workthroughthepossibilitiesineachbuildingtask.However,
fearfulofoneliners,architectsmaybeloathtomentionthe
metaphorsandvalues.Hiddenorexplicit,Ibelieveitisthese
commoncodesthatmakethisdominantstylesorecognisable.
DanielLibeskindsadditiontotheRoyalOntarioMuseumiscalledtheCrystal
Sometimes,aswithZahaHadidandDanielLibeskind,architects
willcalltheirbuildingTheCrystal,andalludetothefractured
planesandselfsimilaranglesofquartz,orashimmeringdiamond.
RemKoolhaaswonthePortocompetitionwithhisdiamondthat
fellfromthesky(asthepresssawit).Butmineralmetaphorsarise
quitenaturallyfrommanybuildingmaterialsandorganisational
geometries,thewaymatterselforganises.Followingthiscommon
morphologicallogic,Libeskindhascollagedhiscrystaladditionto
theclassicalmuseuminOntario.LikeGehrysAerospaceMuseum
inLosAngeles,theiconslamsintothepastwithadebatable
collisionofcultures,andruptures.Moussavicomesneartothe
crystalmetaphorherself,whenshereferstoherClevelandMuseum
astransmittingaffectsofcrystallinity,butthenshegoesonto
multiplyotheraffectsandmorphologies,nottobeguidedbyrelated
metaphors.
Drivenbytheusualforcesofglobalcapitalism,RenzoPiano
adoptedtheshardmetaphortobreakupthevolumeofhis
skyscraperinLondon,especiallyatthetop.Thescalingmotivewas
positive,butthemetaphorfoundnodeeperresonanceor
transformation.Moreconvincingly,Libeskindusedtheshardideaas
anexplicitthemeoftheImperialWarMuseumNorth,becauseithad
plausiblemeaningssymbolisingwarfare,andthefracturingofglobal
cultures(dissensusaspoliticalreality).
HerzoganddeMeuron,workingwithAiWeiwei,cameupwiththe
vaseandbirdsnestfortheBeijingOlympicstadium.Thismix
wasanexplicitjustificationfortheiriconography,inmanyways

manysharedstylisticattributes,includinganinwardlookingand
sculpturaltreatment.Justlikemanyemergentfunctionaltypes,the
museumgrowsitscharacteristicsignsthatbecomewellknownto
thepublic,thatcommunicateclearlyinjustthewaythatMoussavi
deniesispossible.Todaythemuseumaschurchhasbecomethe
stereotypebecauseofrepeatedsocialuse.Assemiologyreveals,use
pluseconomicpressuresalwayschurnsoutnewarchitecturalsigns,
sharedthroughfeedback.Thearchitecturallanguagemaynotbeas
continuousandfixedastheclassicaloneofthepast,anditmaynow
communicatemorethroughassociationsandmetaphors,butitstill
conveyssignification.

InonewayMoussavimakesasimilarpoint,especiallyaboutthe
aestheticarchitecturalsign.Thissignpartlyreferstoitselfonthe
levelofexpression,sometimesitisautotelicinaworkand
redundantlypresent.TakeFrankGehrysFondationVuittonwithits
redundantsailsreferringtoeachother,arecenticonthathas
elicitedsomuchpositiveandnegativecomment.Itisclearlya
museum,aninwardturningsculpturalbodywithsupraexpressive
sailsasspinnakersorcloudsplacedoverthegalleryspaces,the
icebergsandhillroutes.Gehryhasexplicitlyusedthese
metaphors,andiconography,tojustifythenonstandardshapesand
manywillrecognisethemwithoutbeingtoldbecause,asusual,his
languageisbothpopularandesoteric.Thebeautyofthebuilding
whyParisiansloveitinspiteoftheoverbearingvolumethatbreaks
alltheplanningrulesisthewaythesailsleapaboutandcrash
forwarduptowardsthehead,makingthebuildingstrangeand
allusive,challengingandsuggestive.JustasthecrashingLate
Beethovensymphonieschangedmodernmusictowardsan
expressionofindividualidentity,andangst,soonefeelsLateGehry
isepitomisinghisownpersonalstyleinonecataclysmicsymphonic
celebration:anOdetoArchitecturalJoy.
Ascommunicativemetaphor,however,itisbothastruggling
reptileandanoldtimeFuturistspectacle.Thesecondmetaphoris
howtheParispublicandmediaperceiveit.Afterall,theexplosion
inashinglefactorythatDuchampandtheCubistsdetonatedin
Franceisnowanexpectedconvention,aritualShockofthe
New/Old,especiallyforanewmuseum.Astaxidriverspointout,a
versionofGehrysexplosionevenappearedontheChampsElyses
rightnexttotheEtoile,beforehiswasfinished!
The12spinnakers,foldedforstructuralandvisualreasons,taperto
pointsasvesicashapes.Collectivelytheygesturetowardsthehead
ofthearmadilloinafriendlyifclunkyway.Probablypeople
empathisewiththisanimalisticgrammar,typicalofLateGehry,and
preferittothedumbbox,anotherstereotypeofthemuseum.Inany
case,onereasonGehryissuccessfulwithiconicbuildingsisthathe
knowshowtomanipulatetheenigmaticsignifiersasmixed
metaphors,leadthemtowardsaconfluenceofmeaning,andtiethem
tovariousfunctionalmorphologies.AtFondationVuittonthe
signifiersalsohintsuccessfullyatnaturalandculturalsigns
appropriatetothetask,butafunctionalproblemremains.Thehill
routesaresotight,andbusywithsteelandwoodmembersflying
about,thatthespacebetweentheicebergandsailsisnotusedfor
displayingsculpture.ApartfromthemarvellousAdrianVillarRojas
collagenotmuchispossible.
Gehrytakesresponsibilityforsomeoftheiconography,themeaning
andmetaphorsarenamedbyhim,butinitselfthatdoesnotassure
success.Intentionalsymbolismisthesinequanonthatguarantees
nothing.Withoutityoucannotexplorethepublicnatureof
architecture,butconsciousintentionsareonlythepreconditionof
thesuccessfulicon,whichstilltakesskill,luckandhardwork.
ArecentbuildingofNormanFosterbringsoutthedifficulty,the
NationalMuseumofAbuDhabi,designedasamemorialtothelate
SheikhZayedbinSultanAlNahyan.Itisoneofmanyiconson
SaadiyatIsland,thecollectiondesignedbythelargestconcentration
ofWikiListStarchitectsintheworld.Itwillmakethisartificial
islandagoodmeasureoftheproblemsIhavementioned
stereotype,largescaleproduction,lackoficonographic
sophisticationandmayincludesomeastonishingbreakthroughs.
Fosterssymbolismisexplicitinthepressrelease:theNational
Museumisintendedasasymbolofaprogressivenation,
showcasingthehistory,cultureandrecentsocialandeconomic
transformationoftheEmirates.Architecturally,theaimhasbeento
combineahighlyefficient,contemporaryformwithelementsof
traditionalArabicdesignandhospitalityInthismixtureof
functionandmeaningfivesteelvolumeschannelairthroughthe
museumjustasthelandscapedgardenservesanotherecological
function,toshelterthebuildinginathermalblanketthatwillprotect
itfromtheintensesunlightoftheGulf.Thefivewindscoopsare
alsobasedontraditionalsolutionscommontothearea,andsincethe
lateSheikhlovedfalconry(thereisagallerydevotedtoit),falcon
wingtipsandtheirfeathersbecometheiconography.Sofarso
logicalandcontextual,anditunderlinesthepointthatthebesticonic
buildingsaddresscosmicandnaturalthemes.Asusualthemetaphor
maybackfireisitanostrichhidingitsheadintheground,orhas
thefalconbeenshot?But,letusassumeitworksatmanyfunctional
levelsandmultiplereadingssinceFosterhasproducedseveral
convincingiconsinthePostmoderntraditionandthismaybeone
more;besides,ithasntopenedyet.
ThequestionhereisnottherightintentionsortheskillofFoster,but
themuchharderonesofcreativity,howthemetaphorswork
togetherandtheparanoidchargeoftheiconicbuilding.Inorderto
betakenoverbythepublic,forinstanceaswastheEiffelTower,
theymustconveyriskandchallengeprevailingassumptions.This
canmeangoingthroughaperiodofvilificationandrejection.
Theiconicbuilding,asopposedtothemonumentinatraditional
culture,sendsacomplexlycodedmessage.Itisconveyedthrough
thestyleofthearchitectinaddressingstereotype,andthis
connectionofstyletopersonalcharacterreturnsustothe19th
century.

thatarenotreconcilable.Thereisnoliberalequationthatcan
adjudicatefairly,nopoliticsthatwilldeterminethroughreason
whichisbetterormoreworthwhile.Thefateofvaluepluralism,and
itsbeauty,istoadmitthatvaluesareincommensurable,yetpositive.
OneshouldtrytoresolvedifferencesandavoidconflictasBerlin
insists,butinsocietiesandinarchitecturevaluesarebroughtinto
beingbyactionanddesirenotsweetreasonableness.Andmany
compensatingvirtuesofdiversitydoexist.Oneisthat,aswithfood,
avarieddietismoreenjoyableandhealthyinitself.Anotheristhat
meaningdependsondifference,emergesthroughtheplayand
successionofstyles.Thestrongestreasontosupportpluralismis
thatgreatarchitecturelikegreatartdealswithamyriadofopposite
valueswhichitattemptstoconfrontandpresentifnotalways
reconcile;multivalentordeepartisalwaysameasureofthisquality.
Thustheconclusionmightbe,whynotbuildinmanydifferent
styles?Whylimitthemtopost1918orpost1990asBanhamand
thenMoussaviimply?Allperiodsandinfluencesareopentoreuse
and,morecrucially,allglobalculturesincludingthe5,000
unrepresentednations.Theseshouldbeopentosupport,especially
thoselosingtheirlanguageandidentity.Suchexistentialquestions,
andtheirattendantstyleworry,willnotgoaway,soarchitectsmight
aswelllearntodealwiththeanxiety.
Formonists,however,thereisanothersolutiontochoiceand
pluralism.Itcomesinadvertentlyfromthemanwhoinsistedonthe
onetrueInternationalStyleofthe20thcentury,everytimehe
thoughtaboutit.NikolausPevsnertellsthestoryofModernismin
hisPioneersasamoralitytale.Thisstartsinthe1850swiththe
fiascoofcorruptpoliticiansforcingSirGeorgeGilbertScott,
aconfirmedGoth,togiveinandcompromisetothereigningtaste
culture.Becausethearchitectwantedthebigjobmorethan

Ideas de Arquitectura, por supuesto, puede ser una gran virtud. Y como con el
estilo ms grande y ms alto -seriedad - forma funcional tambin hace un trabajo
parece inevitable, una fuerza de la historia, y natural. Pero en realidad sus

En un momento Moussavi incluso aboga por un papel poltico de este
