ALSPA MV3000 Twelve Pulse System 1. Introduction

1. Introduction
1.1 About this Manual
This ALSPA MV3000 twelve pulse System Manual provides a competent user trained in
electrical installation practice with sufficient information to safely install, commission
and maintain an ALSPA MV3000 twelve pulse system. The manual should be read in
conjunction with the ALSPA MV3000 Getting Started Manual T1676.

This manual should be regarded as part of the ALSPA MV3000 twelve pulse system. It
should be retained for the life of the product and should be passed on to any
subsequent owner or user.

To use an ALSPA MV3000 DELTA system in twelve pulse configuration, refer to T1689,
the Technical Manual for MV3000 DELTA.

1.2 About the ALSPA MV3000 Twelve Pulse System

The twelve pulse system is used to reduce harmonic currents generated by the drive
and, in conjunction with the drive DC Link capacitors, to reduce ripple on the DC Link
voltage. The system comprises three add-on components which operate with a
standard MV3000 drive to obtain the ripple reduction:

– a Twelve Pulse Adapter which is an additional rectifier bridge controlled by

the MV3000 control board and should only be used with an MV3000
controller.
– a Twelve Pulse Transformer (TPT) which provides phase shifted mains supplies
to the MV3000 and to the twelve pulse adapter, and which takes the place of
an AC line reactor. Note that AC line reactors are required for systems having
more than one drive per TPT, see Section 3.5.
– an Interbridge Transformer (IBT) which combines the DC outputs from the
adapter and the MV3000 rectifier to produce the DC link voltage with
reduced twelve pulse ripple.

The circuit diagram of a twelve pulse system is shown inside the front cover, and a
general view of the main components is shown in Figure 1-1 and inside the front cover.

1.3 Range of Twelve Pulse Components covered by this Manual

Tables 2-1 to 2-4 in Section 2.3 show the range of twelve pulse system components
available for use with each MV3000 drive. They are tabled for supply frequencies of
50 Hz and 60 Hz, with drive overload ratings of 110% and 150% for each frequency.

Component dimensions, weights and heat losses are provided in Section 2.4.

1.3.1 Twelve Pulse Adapter

To find the primary current at any harmonic shown in Table 2-5 :
Calculate transformer primary current at fundamental (I1) –

0.815 × Motor Shaft Power in kW × 1000 VSec

I1 = x ………………….(1)
((1.35 × Motor Voltage) + 9) × Motor Efficiency × 0.97 V Pr imary

Actual Motor Power × 100

Calculate % of inverter power = ….(2)
Inverter No min al Power Rating ( from T1676 Table 2 − 1)

Then for any harmonic, determine the percentage harmonic current from Table 2-5 for
the % of inverter power calculated in (2).

Multiply the % harmonic current by I1 (from (1)) to give harmonic current.

Note: As actual source impedance, supply imbalance and existing supply distortion vary
between applications, the figures given in Table 2-5 are indicative only, but provide a
reasonable basis for many applications.

ALSPA MV3000 Twelve Pulse System 3. System Design

3. System Design
3.1 Introduction
This section describes system functioning and recommended methods of protecting
system components.

3.2 Functional Description

(Refer to the circuit diagram inside the front cover)

The twelve pulse system is designed to reduce harmonic currents generated by the
MV3000 on the supply.

The twelve pulse transformer has star-wound and delta-wound secondaries which give
two 3-phase outputs phase shifted by 30o with respect to each other. One output is
rectified by the MV3000 rectifier and the other by the twelve pulse adapter, the two
rectified outputs are combined in the interbridge transformer.

3.3 Protection
The MV3000 drive and the components of the twelve pulse system must be protected
against possible malfunctions, generally in three areas comprising:
1) Thermal protection.
2) Protection against short circuits.
3) Protection against harmonic pollution of the supply.

3.3.1 Thermal Protection

Several methods are employed to protect components of the twelve pulse system
against overheating

1) The MV3000 protects itself and the twelve pulse adapter by monitoring heatsink
temperatures. The drive will trip and disable its output if it detects an over-
temperature condition.
2) Twelve pulse transformers recommended and supplied by !"#$ are provided
with temperature sensing devices (thermistors) positioned so that they will detect
an over-temperature condition in either of the secondary windings. As supplied,
the six thermistors are connected in series via a link as shown on the front cover
circuit diagram, and are accessible at a terminal block on the twelve pulse
transformer top panel.
The user connections are by default configured to allow all six thermistors to be
monitored by a single Monitor Protection Relay. The transformer secondaries may
be monitored individually by removing the link that interconnects the two sets of
sensors and connecting each set to a separate monitor protection relay.
A suitable relay is the Telemecanique LT3–SA00MW model thermistor monitoring
relay, the output can be used to trip the MV3000 and also a primary side
interrupting device. Supplies for the monitoring relay must be derived from the
input side of the supply breaker or additional user-supplied logic is required to
enable start-up.

3. System Design ALSPA MV3000 Twelve Pulse System

3.3.2 Short Circuit Protection

Data provided in Sections 2.3.3 to 2.3.6 should be used to select suitable protection
devices for the primary side of the twelve pulse transformer.

!"#$ recommends that the supply cables from each secondary winding of the
twelve pulse transformer are protected by fuses or circuit breakers as shown in the front
cover circuit diagram.

3.3.3 Harmonic Pollution

Failure of fuses in either one of the secondary circuits would result in 6-pulse operation
and hence increased harmonic currents in the supply.

Figure 3-1 shows an arrangement where secondary fuses are monitored by a miniature
circuit breaker (MCB). The normally closed contacts can be used to complete the
MV3000 INTERLOCK line (see the MV3000C Getting Started Manual). If a fuse
ruptures the interlock line is opened and the MV3000 will trip. A suitable MCB is a
Siemens type 3RV16 11-0BD10 with auxiliary contact 3RV19 01-1E. This MCB is
available from !"#$.

Figure 3-1 Secondary fuse monitoring

As shown in the circuit diagram (front cover), this arrangement can be connected in
series with a similar output from a main transformer temperature monitor to trip the
MV3000 and/or a supply interrupt device such as a circuit breaker.

There is a small possibility of fault conditions occurring, after successful commissioning,

that will allow the drive to operate normally, but to draw its power via either its internal
rectifier or the twelve pulse adapter. In this condition the system will generate a greater
level of harmonics on the supply. In theory this condition could remain indefinitely. To
prevent the resulting additional voltage distortion becoming detrimental to other
equipment on the same supply, the rating of that supply should be at least 5 times the
rating of the twelve pulse transformer.

Page 3-2 ALSPA MV3000 Twelve Pulse System User Manual (06/00)
ALSPA MV3000 Twelve Pulse System 3. System Design

To provide complete protection for this condition is complex, however a measure of

protection can be provided by temperature monitoring of the twelve pulse transformer
and monitoring the secondary protection devices, then tripping the drive via the
interlock circuit.

As the above solution does not cover all the possible faults, it is recommended that the
DC current balance between the two DC input wires to the interbridge transformer
(i.e. RECT+ from the drive and RECT+ from the twelve pulse adapter) is checked
periodically – the unit is operating correctly if there is no more than 55% of the total
current in either path. See Section 6, Preventive Maintenance.

3.4 Larger Twelve Pulse Systems

This manual explains how to install a basic twelve pulse system, where one MV3000 is
wired to a dedicated twelve pulse transformer and twelve pulse adapter.

Other Twelve Pulse arrangements are possible, e.g. multiple inverters supplied from a
single Twelve Pulse fed DC link or multiple Twelve Pulse rectifiers fed from one Twelve
Pulse transformer. These systems are outside the scope of this manual but further
information can be obtained from !"#$.

See Section 3.3.2 of T1676 for EMC compliance standards.

Figure 3-2 shows the layout for a typical cabinet installation for EMC compliance.

3.5.1 Segregation Rules

When routing cables for the twelve pulse system there are simple segregation rules
which should be followed, where possible. These are shown on Figure 3-2 and are:
• Power input and output cables should be separated by at least 300 mm (12 in).
• Power and control cables should be separated by at least 300 mm (12 in).
• Power and control cables should cross each other at right angles.

Page 6-2 ALSPA MV3000 Twelve Pulse System User Manual (06/00)
ALSPA MV3000 Twelve Pulse System 7. Diagnostics

7. Diagnostics
7.1 Fault Monitoring
The drive continuously monitors the performance of the MV3000 and twelve pulse
adapter, also the output from any monitoring relays or breakers which may have been
wired into the MV3000 interlock or other digital input by the user. A malfunction of the
system will result in the MV3000 indicating a warning or a trip, depending on the
nature of the fault.

To aid fault diagnosis the drive keeps a log of warnings and trips, which are entered as
warning or trip fault codes. Use of the log is explained in Section 6 of the Getting
Started Manual T1676, which also shows how to view the fault codes and what action
to take in the event of a warning or trip. This section of T1676 also explains how to
reset a trip.

7.2 Warnings Specific to the Twelve Pulse System

The drive illuminates the WARNING indicator if a fault occurs which is not sufficiently
serious to trip the drive. Warnings are not latched, so that if the reason for the warning
is cleared the WARNING indicator will extinguish, though a record may be maintained
in the History Log to aid possible further diagnosis (if configured by the user).

The warning fault code and possible diagnosis is given in Table 7-1.

Press the ? key on the Keypad to view warnings. Further information is provided in
T1676.

Table 7-1 Warning diagnosis

Warning
Description Possible Fault
Code

The heatsink temperatures of

the MV3000 and the twelve
pulse adapter are monitored.
107 High temperature A warning will be issued if the higher of the monitored input
temperatures (Menu 45) exceeds a pre-set limit (which is
drive-size dependent). Parameter 11.08 shows the maximum
of these two values.
Menu 45 provides greater detail. P45.03 shows the MV3000
input temperature, P45.04 shows that of the twelve pulse
adapter.
Check for adequate ventilation of both rectifier assemblies or
for the drive/adapter fans not operating.

108 Low temperature A warning will be issued if the temperature of either heatsink
falls below 5oC. P45.03 and P45.04 must be viewed to see
which heatsink has the lowest temperature and therefore
caused the warning (as P11.08 only reports the highest).
Check:
1. Thermistor feedback, control cables.
2. The rectifier with the low temperature heatsink may not
be operating. Check pre-charge fuses, twelve pulse
transformer secondary winding fuses, transformer
output, rectifiers.

7.3 Trips Specific to the Twelve Pulse System

The drive flashes the TRIPPED indicator if a serious fault has caused it to trip. Trips are
latched and the drive cannot be used until the fault is cleared and the drive is reset as
described in the Getting Started Manual.

A list of trip fault codes and possible diagnosis is given in Table 7-2.

Press the ? key on the Keypad to view trips. Further information is provided in
T1676.

4. Check thermistor cable, control ribbon cable.

7.3.1 Trips due to the Operation of Monitoring Relays

(Refer to the circuit diagram inside the front cover)

If monitoring relays have been wired to the MV3000 interlock as recommended, faults
causing trip code 1 can be grouped into two areas.

Operation of twelve pulse transformer monitor relay

Possible causes:

– Transformer overtemperature (insufficient ventilation)

– Faulty transformer
– Reverted to 6-pulse operation. Monitor the supply currents as described
in Section 5.2.3.

Operation of secondary protection monitor relay/breaker

Possible causes:

– Short circuit supply cable(s)

– Rectifier failure
– DC link failure
– Open circuit interbridge transformer.
