Music & Teenagers

Music is a language thats spoken all over the world. Children,
adolescents, and adults alike enjoy it. Any genre of music can speak to
people. Music can sometimes convey feelings and thoughts that simple
words cant. The effect of music on teenagers is intellectually
stimulating, emotionally encouraging, and socially significant.
In source B, paragraph 12, Andrew Catterall states students
with coursework/experience in music performance and music
appreciation have scored higher on the SAT. Students with experience
in both courses have scored higher in the verbal and math portions of
the test. Listening to music as a young child can stimulate cognitive
development. Kids who are involved in music and learning to play
instruments have a greater ability to learn new languages. In
paragraph 11 of source B, the author says that students who listen to
instrumental music show a greater proficiency in mathematics by
grade 12. Most classical musicians were considered geniuses of their
time because of there involvement in music from such a young age.
According to source A, Music springs from the deepest emotions
within the soul, and with or without lyrics, music conveys a message,
the deepest of feelings and emotions. When people listen to others
sing, they form a bond/connection by relating to what the person is
singing. Music can be used to form relationships and ease conflicts. A
teenager with ADHD uses music to fill hours of boredom and to help
her with her self-esteem. A study shows that the amount of time
teenagers spend listening to music is correlated with major depression.
This can help parents encourage kids to spend more time reading than
listening to music. Music is a part of life that can create happiness,
sadness, pride, anger, etc. Paragraph 30 in source C states people
often put music on the list of the top five things that are most
pleasurable for them.
Music is used for many aspects in life. For movies, national
anthems, and more. For example, the Star Spangled Banner is used to
celebrate the Americans beating the British in the war of 1812. Also,
Hitler used classical pieces by Richard Wagner to create patriotism
amongst the German people. Hearing a song can create nostalgia of a
childhood memory or a fun day from the past. Movies use music to
draw in viewers and create an intense feeling that theyll remember.
Every country has a national anthem to display pride to the rest of the
world.
In conclusion, the effect of music on teenagers is intellectually
stimulating, emotionally encouraging, and socially significant. Music
can help stimulate the brain to perform better when taking a test or

working on a project. It can also make people feel different emotions

and thoughts that dont regularly occur. Music also builds bonds
between people on a social level through movies and anthems.
