3) Wari and Tiwanaku. Both groups primarily utilized textiles, specifically, finely
woven tapestry garments, to disseminate their message of religious-political control.
Wari y Tiwanaku.
4) In textile versions, these staff bearers may be more or less readable depending on
how extreme the abstraction. It is interesting to reflect the the creation of increasingly
illegible versions was not the result of increasing misunderstanding of the image, since
the various figure parts and their interrelationships are not garbled. In fact, Wari images
of the classic style ar often less legible than those of the peripheral styles, in which
such misunderstanding might be expected.
Rather, the various changes made to the stock of the staff bearer and other motifs
demonstrate a deeper, wholly artistic understanding of the images underlying structure.
imagen.
5) Nevertheless, these diverse parts maintain their logic: pairs of eye-squares appear on
the upper face, while staff segments are stacked to one side of the body.
cuerpo.
6) As levels of abstraction increase, the subject matter becomes the pattern of colors and
shapes itself.
estado.
7) Thus, the creation of fine tapestry regardless of the imagery woven into itdemonstrates the the patron, that is, the state and its officials, has control over vast
resources. Controlled materials include coastal cotton for the warps and highland
camelid fiber for the wefts, while other resources include the efforts of a multitude of
specialists of different kinds.
8) In a culture characterized by textile primacy these messages of power would not go
unnoticed, either within the state hierarchy or by the conquered.
The Wari Tunic
9) While "creativity within constraints" may seem paradoxical, it is precisely such a
rigid iconographic structure that seems to encourage bold formal exploration.
In my consideration of formal irregularities in a Wari tunic, I distinguish between
"derivations" and "anomalies". Derivations represent slight irregularities, such as the
stripping of a different shade of red or the inversion of one shape in a motif. Anomalies
consist of more extreme irregularities, such as the introduction of an unprecedented
color or a completely different motif; these occur in less than 10 percent of the cases.
10) A stepped-diamond motiv, raher rare in the overall corpus of Wari tunics, alternates
with an interlocked double-headed animal. The double-headed animal is quite difficult
to read: it consists of two interlocked U-shaped forms, each with both ends terminating
in an animal head, which has a circular nose, bisected eye. This motiv is quite commong
among tunics and is found in various degrees of abstraction, of wich this one is
relatively less extreme. The animal is generally thought of as a puma.
In the presentation of these motifs, the artists kept to a consistent version; in other
words, they did not alter the shapes in any significant way.
14) Even if the blue-green thread was chosen by someone other than the original artists,
the status of that particular hue and its anomalous nature remain with the Wari aesthetic
system.
esttica.
15) The varied textiles of the Middle Horizon period in the collection of the Museum of
Fine Arts demonstrate the many faces of abstraction. The virtuosity of the textile artists
who created these remarkable compositions in easy to grasp, while the abstracted
images themselves are not. This attention to the means of expression, that is, interest in
colors and shapes themselves, shows the level of aesthetic sophistication encouraged in
a highly developed society. Through this encounter with the illegible we may glimpse
the Wari fiber artists structuring of the formal universe. The fabrication of such a world
of bold color and dynamic shape is our clue to the power given to a wholly artistic
vision during the ancient Andean Middle Horizon.
