TITLE

MINI PROJECT

1.1 Introduction
The need for an open-ended laboratory activity is emphasized in enhancing
independent learning activities and inculcating creativity and innovation of
students.
This open-ended laboratory activities is created to provide a platform for
students (as a group) to determine the objectives and scopes of the
laboratory assignment, identify the necessary apparatus and prepare step
by step methodology to carry out the task to address the given problem.
The group will be required to analyse all the technical data obtained and
present them in a technical format.
1.2 Objective
PREAMBLE

The objective of this activity is:

To solve a given problem using the right laboratory testing tools and
methodology.

1.3 Learning Outcomes
At the end of the laboratory activities, students would be able to:
1. Determine the suitable laboratory tests and procedures to follow to
address the given problem.
2. Analyse test data and present the solution to the open-ended
problem.
3. Work in a group to undertake the task and produce the relevant
technical report.

2. The Problem
A new water treatment plant will be built in a new residential area. As an
civil engineer, you are responsible on the water quality assessment of the
project. Suggest the relevant water tests that need to be undertaken and
discuss the possible cause and mitigations measure should it exceed
allowable limit.

PROBLEM STATEMENT

In this water assessment analysis, two problems need to be tackled before

the suitability of the intake point and acceptability of the treated water could
be determined. The focus of your analysis can be constructed as given
below:
1. The physical characteristic of the water,
2. The chemical characteristic of the water,
Each group has to collect their own sample from the possible source of
water that can be used as water supply. The group is required to design
and conduct suitable and related laboratory test to obtain the relevant water
parameters to address the two (2) related problems mentioned above.
This task should be completed within 5 laboratory session in 5 consecutive
weeks. Students are going to conduct all the experiments in the
Environment Laboratory.
3.1

Apparatus
The group must identify the availability of the chosen apparatus in the
laboratory before the right procedures can be identified.

3.2

Procedures
The group is required to search for the relevant procedure to carry out
the test based on the available apparatus in your laboratory. The
document must be made ready for verification by the instructor before
the laboratory activity commences.

WAYS & MEANS

3.3

Data Acquisition
All data collected and observed during the test must be tabulate in
proper format for easy verification and presentation of the technical
report

4. Results, Analysis and Conclusion

RESULTS

The group is required to submit the technical report of the laboratory results
highlighting the apparatus used, the procedures undertaken for the test,
data acquisition process, analysis carried out and the relevancy of the setout output to address the given problem. The results also should discuss
the suitability of the water sample as water supply with strong supporting
points and evidences. The format of the technical report is left to the
creativity discretion of the group.
The report must be submitted 7 days after the completion of the test.
