Use of the pen tool in Illustrator

Process
The devilish face on the back of the business card is an icon of DeviantArts official mascot,
Fella (who doesnt get enough attention, in my opinion). He was drawn using the ellipse and
pen tool. I also drew the D icon in Illustrator. The main reason I chose this company was
because they had recently redesigned their own logo, and I didnt like it very much. So I
took this assignment as an opportunity to design a look that I would prefer.
With these icons, I worked on this business card first. I decided to place Fella on the back
by himself so he didnt distract from the text. I drew the triangles in the corner so that
the card looked fuller, also giving the D icon something to interact with. The whole look is
modern, clean, and young, which is the message of DeviantArt.
The audience was to young and/or spirited modern artists.

Process
I aimed for repetition in the letterhead. I simply reused the elements from the business
card. The corner triangles are used again as a watermark. I purposefully gave the contact
information low hierarchy so the website address would be stronger. I excluded my Fella
icon because it would be too distracting and is unnecessary for a letterhead.

Process
First, I started by stating why I had chosen DeviantArts mascot, Fella, for my subject. I
talked about why I wasnt fond about DeviantArts new logo and why I though mine icon is
at least conceptually better. Then I went on to describe the design elements of my icon.
On the web page itself, I repeated the sharp green colors and aligned many things on the
left side of the text for easy legibility. The corner triangles create asymmetry and repetition
from the business card and letterhead.

Process
My first sketches were much more literal and complicated. I had drawn an icon
of my curly hair with my old fedora. I quickly realized that not only did I not have
time to draw something so complicated in Illustrator, but it was a poor branding
concept. A brand shouldnt be subject to such constant change as someones looks.
wThis new look wasnt easy either. I underestimated how hard it would be to draw a
hand in Illustrator. The pen is what I use on my Bamboo tablet to draw. This icon is
professional and elegant, a nice contrast to the grudgey background. This logo was
specifically designed for this portfolio cover.

Inside 1

Process
I had discovered this band about a week before being assigned this project. I was so
excited about the band that I decided to do my brochure on them, perhaps give them some
publicity.
First, I had to create a new logo in Illustrator. It was a bit difficult because the bands
official logo has a giraffe on it, so I couldnt use it in my logo without it looking too similar. I
instead drew the lead singers hat and goggles and a wicked smile.
Youll notice that the fold is unique. On the piece of paper that I originally sketched on, I
folded it in a way to make it easier to see the front logo. That folding is the unique folding
that I used in the final brochure. My fellow peers loved the unique layout and how it made
the brochure a little more interactive and deep.

Front

Next, I used Photoshop to create the textured background. It was a red leather base with
rusted metal masked on top of it. I also put the robot character into frames and masked
the white glow behind them in Photohsop. I also cut out the silhouette I used for the
textwraped image. Lastly, I added details like the orange and teal swirls in Illustrator.

Practice in typography

Process
I chose the quote first and got inspiration from the flower photos that I took the previous
week. I found the picture of Christ online, purposefully trying to look for a picture without
his face. The message would be clear and more effective without his face. I masked the
background away from the Christ image and the edges away from my flower photo. I also
chose vintage textures from online and played with the colors of the flowers to match the
textures. I used white drop shadows around the text to make it legible. I aligned the text
with Christs elbow and the large leaves at the bottom, respectively. The larger text at the
bottom was intended for design, not legibility.

Practice in Illustrator
Focus on a message

Process
I started with thinking of a company. The Underground is a company in my own fictional
story. They grow unique mushrooms in caves for a majority of their profit, but also grow
poisonous mushrooms upon special request. So for this company, the logo design needed
to be unsuspecting to the public yet grungy and dark.
The first design is more professional while the other one is more accurate to what the
company is. Most people I asked liked the first design but I prefer the second one. For the
first one, I found a san-serif font and drew the tilted mushroom. The white specks follow the
rule of odds. For the second one, I searched online for an earthy font and used the pen tool
to draw the mushrooms. I then used the eraser tool to chip away at the lines so it would
match the font.

Process
In one of Aesops less notable fables, the moral of the story was Desperation breeds
creativity. Well, after I had rented a camera from the campus library, I desperately looked
for something outside to shoot with the few minutes of daylight left. I felt like I was chasing
the sun as I ran to get to the front of the school where the beautiful evening light was. Then
I paused in my tracks as I saw the Taylor buildings walls glow a soft pink. I knelt behind a
small tree with red berries to help pull all the red in and quickly took the shot. I later got
rid of harsh shadows, edited out some signs that were in the grass, and gave the whole
thing a pink glow.

Learn the basic layout elements (rule of odds, white space, repetition)

Process
First I sketched, though the original design looks a bit different from the final product.
Using Adobe InDesign, I inserted the image first, then built the title and text around it. I
eliminated any curves from my design and added decorative squares for repetition. The
empty squares contrast with the dark blocks and the mans dark suit. Lastly, I used a subtle
gradient for the background and left chucks of white space to separate topics.

Objectives
Writing the text
Using Word as a design program
Convey the message
Using a scanner to get quality images

Process
The challenge of this project was to use one, scanned, full-bleed image and be limited to
Microsoft Word to design. This was especially hard given that the newest version of Word
has done away with its most useful design features. I got my image from my junk mail pile
and scanned it, which went well. I wrote the text and sketched. I originally used a more
elegant script font, but people had a hard time reading it. Also, everything used to be near
the top of the page in a linear fashion. I was advised to place Supporting to the side of my
text and move the website and orange bar down more, as you now see. The newer design is
more modern, with a soft, warm color scheme, simple yellow peddle shapes for repetition,
and basic alignment.
