Business Card
Description:

Business card designed using a personally created logo.

Date:

11/7/15

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 03
Ben Pingel

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe InDesign
Adobe Illustrator

Objectives:

Use the basic tools in Illustrator & InDesign.

Create a new logo to fit a company or personal image.
Business card should be 3.5 x 2 and printed above center on a
vertical page.
Apply typography rules, keeping small copy.
Include contact information: name, address, phone, website,
and email on each piece.

Process:

First, I began by brainstorming of different ideas for companies.

I then came up with the great idea of a fashion company. After
taking my target audience into consideration, I came up with
the name- Coup de Coeur (it means favorite in French). I
wanted it to be unique and classic in a contemporary way; to
represent the brand. Then with this in mind, I designed my
logo. I first sketched up some ideas, then took them to Adobe
Illustrator and brought them to life. I then took the icon piece
from my logo and incorporated that into my stationery and
business card using Adobe InDesign. I had to be sure I used
adequate negative space to keep it clean and simple. I also had
to make sure I aligned everything that I could. And it just all
came together!

Brochure
Description:

Matching letterhead and business card designed using a

personally created logo.

Date:

12/5/15

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 03
Ben Pingel

Program(s)/Tools:
Caret & Photoshop
W3s HTML validator

Objectives:

Create an original, new logo and use it in a brochure.

Incorporate quality images. Incorporate at least four quality
images, not including the logo. One should be clipped in
Photoshop and text-wrapped in InDesign so the text follows the
cutout shape of the image.
Write at least 250 words of original copy in at least three
paragraphs, headers, and subheaders.
Trim for a full bleed and print in duplex (two-sided) color.

Process:

First, I started out by planning out an idea of what I wanted

to do and then made a couple of sketches. I then thought of
different ideas for my logo. I then created my logo in Illustrator
using the pen tool and later placed it into InDesign. In Adobe
InDesign, I split my layout into three sections made the two
flaps the front then open up to a trifold inside of the brochure.
I used a Monochromatic color scheme throughout to create
nice flow and tie the whole 60s glam theme together. I put
pictures of girls with strong eyebrows because that is the looks
I am going for. I made my center photo large and wrapped
text around her and my other images on the inside. For all my
images on the inside, I used the quick selection tool in Adobe
Photoshop to remove the background of the images, then I used
the refine mask dialogue box to smooth, feather, shift edge
and apply contrast to the outline of their each one of their faces.
The changes I made in the refine mask dialogue box made a
cleaner and softer image that didnt look so awkward against the
background. To make my brochure really unique, I cut out the
eyebrows on the front 2 flaps with an X-ACTO Knife.

BROW BAR
Eyebrows can make
or break you
The shape of your eyebrows
reveals, in a glance, a lot about
you and your characteristics.
Waxed and tweezed, the brows
can advertise good grooming.
Eyebrows not only identify
who you are, but also how you
are feeling. Along with the lips,
eyebrows in fact are one of the
most expressive parts of your
body. Surprise causes eyebrows
to raise. Conversely, expressions
like
suspicion and
curiosity,
make
your
brows
furrow.

Eyebrows are important

In todays world, the power
of eyebrows is extremely
underestimated. Some
believe that eyebrows
are simply hair
that grows above
the eye socket.
But what is
often failed to be
recognized is that,
without eyebrows,
eye sockets would
not only succumb
to being attacked
with sweat, water,
and other debris, but
also we would lose an
essential part of nonverbal
communication. Eyebrows
are crucial to facial
identity. You can
change several
features on
your face, but
change your
brows and
you are no
longer the same
person.

Eyebrows can give

you strength
Get the brows that wow. Our
signature brow service will
prepare you for prominence.
Our mission is to offer a beauty
essential for everyone. We set
out to change the way people

This is a full-bleed color flier I made to promote a

fundraiser using only Microsoft Word and scanner.

Date:

10/10/15

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 03
Ben Pingel

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe InDesign
Adobe Illustrator

Objectives:

Learn to manage Photoshop layers.

Learn to blend images together smoothly, using
masks.
Use filters.
Apply appropriate typography.

Process:

First I found my image and scanned it in, then in

Microsoft Word, I made my own filter by creating a
black box the same size as my image and changing the
transparency to fit the feel I was going for. I decided
to go with white text so that it would stand out. I went
with two fonts to make the title information stand
out more and a serif font for the others, to create
a nice contrast. I decided to add a transparent box
behind the date and time to create emphasis. I also
added an orange line underneath my title for style and
to help complete my color scheme. Programs used:
Microsoft Word, Epson Scanner, PDF2JPG.net (PDF
converter).

Objectives:

Use only the Illustrator tools to create and draw your logos.
Refine logo with color variations.

Process:

First I began with thinking of a company. Then I sketched up a

few ideas for an icon. Then I took my ideas to Adobe Illustrator
and brought my idea to life by using different shapes, the pen
tool, and adjusting the anchor points. I then tried a few different
color schemes until I found my favorite. I refined my typography
until I found the perfect font. I also adjusted the kerning on the
word Bridal to create a nice unity and connection.

EOS Rebel T3i

Objectives:

Learn basic photography skills.

Adjust image levels, saturation, color balance, sharpen tool on
separate layers for NDE (non-destructive editing.)
Use layers to design text, and repeating graphic elements in
Photoshop.

Process:

First I started by choosing my color scheme. I decided

Monochromatic, from the Visual Focus color, was the best idea.
Then I began thinking about what I wanted my color scheme to
be as well as an idea of what my picture should look like.I then
went out with my a EOS Rebel T3i camera to take a good quality
photo with nice lighting, sharp focus, and a nice composition. I
then edited the photo using Photoshop and changed the levels,
sharpness, saturation, and color balance. I then cropped it to
an 8.511 layout with my subject within the Rule of Thirds, and
continued to add my text and design elements. I organized my
photo to include my color scheme, color swatches, the color
name, along with my text to create my design. I chose circles to
represent my color scheme swatches and included a a box and
a line with these colors. I used the eye dropper tool to grab the
colors of the of the Visual Focus color wheel. Then I put a drop
shadow behind my text in order to enhance readability.

Montage Project
Description:

I made an inspirational spiritual montage, blending two photos

together to make one masterpiece.

Date:

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:

Unify a layout with a consistent theme and dominant spiritual

message.
Learn to blend two or more images together gradually, using
masks
Demonstrate more advanced Photoshop skills for layout with
multiple elements
Use a mask to apply a filter to one part of the image
Apply typography principles

Process:

First I began by going out to take a nice high quality picture.

Then I came back and tweaked the picture in Adobe Photoshop
by changing the levels, vibrance, and contrast. Then I used
selective color to change the color of the wheels to match my
color scheme. Then I added a photo of marble and blended
them together. Finally I added one of my favorite spiritual
quotes by M. Russell Ballard. I added a very subtle drop shadow
behind the quote to make it more legible. Then I changed the
word balance to a cute script font to make it stand out more. It
created a nice contrast.

W3s HTML validator

Objectives:

Size and optimize an original logo as a .png for a web page.

Acquire a working knowledge of HTML.
Acquire a working knowledge of CSS.

Process:

I created this web page using a program called Caret

(Chromebook version of TextWrangler or Notepad++). I love Web
Design and so it was fun for me to do something I am actually
somewhat experienced with. I also used thehttp://www.W3.org
HTML validator. Checking code is vital to successful web page
creation. After this, I marked up all my content and inserted the
image of my logo. I then attached a pre-made CSS document
to my HTML. I then used the colors from my logo for the colors
for my web page. I was able to grab these colors by using the
eyedropper tool in Photoshop. I also changed my fonts to
Montserrat and Lora. I declared some backup fonts just in case
the viewers browser didnt have these nice fonts. I also used
padding and margins around the logo and text so that there
was adequate white space, visual flow, and that the alignment
tied everything together. I took off the background of the text
because I really wanted to simplify my web page and make it
look clean.

Flier
Description:

This is a flier I created to advertise for an upcoming graduate

leadership conference.

Date:

10/3/15

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 03
Ben Pingel

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe InDesign

Objectives:

Apply the design principles and use appropriate typography.

Incorporate basic InDesign skills to improve basic flier layout.

Process:

First I started off by creating sketches of a few ideas I had

for the poster, then I chose my favorite and went ahead and
created it using Adobe InDesign. I used fonts that excellently
contrast each other and helped connect everything. I used
two black bars, creating repetition, which in result unified the
piece a bit more. I then put white text over the black bars to
create a nice contrast. Then I went over how I could improve
it by stepping back and making sure my message was clear,
making sure everything was aligned, and finally by making sure
everything flowed nicely.
