Discuss the basic assumptions made in using a linear damage rule to assess fatigue
damage accumulation. State the significant shortcomings in using such a theory and
give an example of such pitfalls. Why, then, is linear damage theory so often used?

Determine the defect sizes and state which type of steel would have the greater
tolerance to intrinsic defects in this application. For this loading situation a
geometry factor of 1.12 may be assumed.
