2. Attends and participates in the deliberation/meetings and points out positive aspects
as well as inaccuracies and insufficient treatment of the research paper.
3. Observes the groups decision on suggestions brought up during the research
proposal deliberations, the reading committee evaluation, and the oral defense.
4. During the defense, he/she:
a. asks the candidate questions about the research
b. gives suggestions/modifications about the points raised by the candidate
c. makes the candidate feel at ease by eliciting what the candidate knows rather than what
he/she does not
d. gives constructive criticism
5. Over all, the panel member renders final judgment about the acceptability of the
research paper in the light of its organization, form, style, mechanics and grammar,
before affixing his/her signature for approval. He/she sees to it that the research paper has
met the established standards and requirements for a thesis specially its scholarly quality.
Oral Defense Procedures
1. Prayer
2. Introduction of the candidate, adviser and panelists by the program
coordinator
3. Summary of the investigation/study by the candidate
4. Interrogation by the panelists
5. Modes of conducting the interrogation
a. 2 rounds of 15 minute question and answer by each panelist
b. Free wheeling: each panelist will ask his questions and follow up
questions may be asked by the other panelists
6. Questions to be asked will be sequential following the order of the
problems, though cross references may be done in the process of
questioning. Panelists with questions in the first chapters will ask the
question first.
7. After the interrogation is completed, suggestion for improvement of the
manuscript will be done in consensus.
8. Deliberation by panelists and the Program Coordinator in the presence of
the adviser
9. Comments and suggestions on the technical aspects of the manuscript such
as format, typographical error or grammar should be written down and
given to the candidate.
10. Comments/corrections and suggestions given during the oral defense
should be noted down by both the adviser and the program coordinator,
which will be summarized and given to the reading committee for final
evaluation of the manuscript
11. Suggestions made during the oral defense are FINAL No additional
changes in the content and incorporations should be required after the
defense.
