Q.1 Attempt any Three Parts
(A )(i) Derive the relation for acceleration of piston for slider crank mechanism.

(ii) A vertical petrol engine 150mm. dia. & 200mm. stroke has a connecting rod 350mm. long. The
mass of the piston is
1.6kg. & engine speed is 1800r.p.m. On expansion stroke with crank angle 30 from the T.D.C. , the
gas pressure is 750 KN/m
Determine the net thrust on the engine.

(B) The lengths of crank & connecting rod of a vertical reciprocating engine are 400mm & 2m.
respectively. The crank is rotating
clockwise at a speed of 400r.p.m. The mass of connecting rod is 20kg. & the distance of its center of
gravity from the cross head
pin centre is 1.2 m. Find the torque exerted on the crank shaft due to the inertia of moving parts
analytically when crank has
turned through 40from the T.D.C. & piston is moving downwards. The radius of gyration of
connecting rod about an axis
passing through its center of gravity is 900mm.

(C) The turning moment diagram for a multi cylinder engine has been drawn to a vertical scale of
1mm=650N-Muzaffarnagar & a
horizontal scale of 1mm.=4.5.The areas above & below the mean torque line are -28,+380.260,+310,-300,+242,-380,+265
& -229.
The fluctuation of speed is limited to 1.8% of the mean speed which is 400r.p.m. Density of rim
material is 7000 kg/m & width
of the rim is 4.5 times its thickness. The centrifugal stress(hoop stress) in the rim material is limited
to 6N/mm.Neglecting the
effect of boss & arms determine the dia., width, thickness of the flywheel rim.

(D) The torque delivered by a two stroke engine is represented by- T=(7000+1000Sin2-2000Cos2)
Where is the angle turned by the crank from the I.D.C. The engine speed is 300r.p.m. The mass of
flywheel is 500kg. & its
radius of gyration is 750mm. Determine(i)
the power developed
(ii)
the total percentage fluctuation of speed
(iii)
the angular acceleration of flywheel when the crank has turned through an angle of 60 from
the I.D.C.

Q.2 Attempt any Four parts

(A) Derive the frictional torque relation considering uniform wear for conical clutch.

(B) A pulley is driven by a flat belt, the angle of lap being 125,the belt is 100mm. wide & 6mm. thick.
The density of material is
1000kg/m.If =0.27 & the maximum stress in the belt is not to exceed 2Mpa find the greatest power
which the belt can
transmit & the corresponding speed of the belt.

(C) How are the dynamometer classified? What is the difference between absorption & transmission type
of dynamometer
Explain with the help of diagram any one absorption type of dynamometer.

(D) A power of 60KW is transmitted by a multi plate clutch at 1500r.p.m. Axial intensity of pressure is not
to exceed 0.15N/mm.The
Co-efficient of friction for friction surface is 0.15.The external radius of friction surface is 120mm.Also
the external radius is
equal to 1.25 times the internal radius. Find the no. of plates needed to transmit the required power.
Assume uniform wear.

(A) What do you understand by gyroscopic couple? Derive formula for its magnitude. Explain the effect of
the gyroscopic couple on
Sea going vessel.

(B) Explain the term Damped Vibration. Prove that the equation of motion for a damped vibration is
given byx+C/m x+k/m x=0 Where x, C , m & k has standard notation.
