Introduction
Fractionation column is a tall, horizontally subdivided container for fractional
distillation in which vapour passes upwards and condensing liquid flows
downwards. The vapour becomes progressively enriched in more volatile
components as it ascends, and the less volatile components become
concentrated in the descending liquid, which can be drawn off. Fractionating
columns help to separate the mixture by helping the mixed vapors to cool,
condense, and vaporize again in accordance with Raoult's law. With each
condensation-vaporization cycle, the vapors are enriched in a certain
component. A larger surface area allows more cycles, improving separation.
This is the rationale for a Vigreux column or a packed fractionating column.
Recovery of natural-gas liquids (NGL) from natural gas is quite common in
natural gas processing. Recovery is usually done to maximize liquid recovery,
produce transportable gas which free from heavier hydrocarbons and meet a
sales gas specification. Deethanizer a unit of equipment that separates
ethane and more volatile components, as deethanizer overhead, from a
mixture of hydrocarbons and leaves a bottom product that is essentially
ethane free. Depropanizer is a unit of equipment for separating propane,
with or without lighter components, as depropanizer overhead, from a
mixture of hydrocarbons, and leaving a bottoms product which is essentially
propane free. Debutanizer is a unit of equipment for separating butane, with
or without lighter components debutanizer overhead, from a mixture of
hydrocarbons, and leaving a bottom product which essentially butane free.
All this simulation is carried out by using iCON software. iCON is a
software developed by the Malaysian oil company, PETRONAS together with
Virtual Material Group from Canada. iCON software is based on the
calculation of thermodynamic and physical mechanisms. In industry, this
software is often used to predict the behavior of the application process for
the upstream and downstream for oil and gas processes.

Objective
To converge a distillation column

Procedure
1. A new case is started.
2. The Peng-Robinson EOS was selected.
3. The following components is added which were:
Nitrogen
Propane
CO2
i-Butane
Methane
n-Butane
Ethane
i-Pentane
n-Pentane
n-Hexane
n-Heptane
n-Octane
n-Nonane
n-Decane

4. Feed streams was added with the following data.

5. Unit operations was added which is De-Methanizer.


The De-Methanizer is modeled as a reboiled absorber operation,
with two feed streams and an energy stream feed which
represents a side heater on the column.
6. The process stream table was shown and the result was taken.
7. The energy stream table was shown and the result was taken as well.
8. De-Methanizer file was imported. Then Feed_Gas to bottom product of
De-Methanizer column was changed.
9. The process was re-stimulated for De-Ethanizer, De-Propanizer and DeButanizer.

Discussion
By using iCON software, we can used to make a distillation column. This
distillation column works by the application and removal of heat to exploit
differences in relative volatility. The heat causes components with lower
boiling points to be vaporized, leaving less volatile components as liquids.
Distillation can be used to separate binary or multi-component mixtures.
Many variables, such as column pressure, temperature, size, and diameter
are determined by the properties of the feed and the desired products. Feed
gas enter the distillation column which is de-ethanizer (C-100). The top
product of this process is ethane and the bottom product stream is 610. This
bottom product leaves the first distillation column and passing through the
second distillation column which is de-propanizer (C-200). At C-200 column,
there have 2 feed streams that enter this column which are 610 and Feed2.
The top product of this process is propane and the bottom product stream is
630. Then, 630 leaves the second column and passing through the third
distillation column which is de-butanizer (C-300). At C-300 column, only one
feed come in which is 630. The top product of this process is butane and the
bottom product stream is 650. The process ended here.

Conclusion
The objective is achieved.
