Dear Andrew,

My name is Jacob Stinson, also referred to as Jake, and I am from Hickory, North
Carolina. My choice of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, as a local North
Carolinian, may be slightly varying of other students on campus.
Location, distance and urbanization; Key factors for most students. However, my first
attraction had nothing to do with the city, location or distance. I found that it was the outstanding
accessibility to helpful programs, the dedicated faculty, and the diverse environment that
Charlotte had to offer for me. As well as an extensive and established Exercise Science program
that caught my attention from the very beginning. These were the first true factors that instantly
set me apart from every other campus I had visited, this includes: North Carolina State, Mars Hill
and Wingate. This is when I decided that the UNCC was for me.
Coming into UNCC definitely had a frightening, yet exciting feeling to it. This class in
particular was the most frightening and nostalgic of the bunch. I had just finished my Advanced
Placement Literature and Composition class so I was clueless (and still am) of what to expect.
Whether it be of equal difficultness or even more challenging, since I knew my writing and
reading was average at best. However, on the other note, my consistent practice of text reading
and short essay timed writing gave me a since of relief. Which leads me to the conclusion that I
have strengths and weaknesses alike. My strengths being experience and my weaknesses being
the unknown, nervousness and curiosity. Overall, I believe my lack of knowledge on the class (so
far) is my biggest worry but will slowly dissipate over time. This nervous nature of mine tends to
lead into my personality and sociality. A very shy person, yet socially diverse and broad with
friends. This is what I believe to be my most interesting fact about me.
Sincerely,
Jacob Stinson

II. I might only have one match, but I can make an explosion ~ Rachel Plattens Fight
Song, 2015.
The quote tells me that even though you are only one person in a campus of about 27,000
people, you can still show yourself off as an excellent student and make the best of your
education.
III. I believe one of the most important values is Critical Reading. Not only is it essential
for English but its very essential for life after college. Grasping the ability to decipher a text and
ask questions about it further than just for informational purposes is key to making the situation
better. This is what I truly believe, personally, critical reading means.
IV. Will Critical Reading be a large part of your course? Is creativity just as important as
relevance in your class?
These are some questions that I would personally love to know.
