(FIRST REVISION)
PREAMBLE
The Sri Lanka Standard Method of Measure111ent of BuilcLng Works (SLS 573) was first developed on a request made 0y National
Metric Conversion Authority, and was published in 1982 on :he recommendations of the Ci vii Engineering Divisional Committee.
This is the first revision of SLS 573 : 19fi2. This revised !;tandard was prepared by a Technical Committee appointed by the
Institute for Construction Training and Development in a~r.odation with the sri Lanka Standards Institution and was authorized
for adoption and publication as a Sri La."lka Standard by i_ne ,"::ouncil of the Sri Lanka Standards Institution on 1999-04-08.
The constitution of the Technical Committee and tht> re!t~''1nt Working Committees, Advisory Committees are given in the
foreword to the standard.
Measurement occupies a very important place in the plZ:l!'.,ng ':'.Ud execution of any building work from the time of firf>t ez.timate to
final completion of the project and settlement of payments. '~Le methods followed for such measurements are not uniform, and
considerable differences exist between the oractic:es follow~d ()y different construction agencies and state sector organizations.
While it is recognized that each system of measurement h 1s to be specifically related to the administrative and financial
organizations within the institution responsible for the work. ?n unification of various systems at the technical level has been
accepted as desirable. This standard attempts to fulfill this nr!-:-.::d. It deals with the method of measurement of buildin?; works and
applies equally to the preparation of estimates and bills of quantities and to site measurements. It provides guide lines in carrying
out this work using metric units only.
--
'r~-,.
This revision include~ sections dealing with paving, gla.. bg and mechanical installations, and is a comprehensive, complete
document It contains twenty two work sectons. The ciaHiikation table arrangement of this standard and the content was greatly
influenced by the current practice in S~ Lanka and the iolk il;ict. publications:
United Kingdom;
j
'
c) SMM7 :
Standard Method of Measurement of b.2:iding Works of Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors and the
Building Employers Confederation of United Kingdo,n; and
In the application of this standard, clarifications in the interp ~f;tation may ari~e. In such instances, assistance from the
Sri~Lanka Standards Institution should be sought.
The initiative taken by the Institute for Construction, Tr.jnl.1g and Development to revise this standard, and the contribiJtion made
in this connection is gratefully acknowledgc:d.
