WHY SOLAR COOLING?

Imagine...being able to fit a solar air

conditioning system to your building
that would result in dramatic reductions
in electricity consumption and massive
reductions in green house gas
emissions

POWERED BY THE
SUN,
YET MODULAR,
SCALABLE AND
EASY TO IMPLEMENT!

BACKGROUND
Air conditioning places huge demands on
power grids, with summer peak use causing
supply problems and blackouts. Air
conditioning places huge challenges on
utilities and government who have a
responsibility of ensuring stable and
affordable power. Utilities must invest huge
sums in upgrading their electricity
distribution systems, resulting in ever
increasing electricity prices for consumers.
This results in ever increasing running costs
for air conditioning systems.

ENVIRONMENTAL
Air conditioning accounts for
around 25% of domestic and 15%
of commercial CO2 emissions.
High running costs and damage to
our environment is the high price
we pay to stay cool. NWMs
solution uses the same solar heat
that makes us hot, to make us
cool!

COMPONENTS
Solar panel
Solar panel refers either to a photovoltaic module, a solar thermal energy
panel, or a set of solar photovoltaic (PV) modules electrically connected and
mounted on a supporting structure. A PV module is a packaged, connected
assembly of solar cells. Solar panels can be used as a component of a larger
photovoltaic system to generate and supply electricity. Electrical connections
are made in series to achieve a desired output voltage and/or in parallel to
provide a desired current capability. We need four solar panel each of
250watts.

Battery
Battery store the electric power in the form of a chemical reaction. Without
storage you would only have power when the sun is shining or the generator
is running. We need battery of 48V.

Charge controller
A charge controller is needed to prevent the overcharging of the battery.
Proper charging of battery will prevent the damage and increase the life and
performance of it.

Invertor

The power invertor is the heart of the system. It makes 220 volts AC from the
12 volts DC stored in the batteries. It can also charge the batteries if
connected to a generator or the AC line.
For 12v applications an invertor is not required .An invertor should only be
required when it is necessary to convert the 12v input to power a 220v
standard application.

Air conditioning:

It is defined as A process of treating air so as to control simultaneously its

temperature, humidity, cleanliness and distribution to meet requirement

ADVANTAGES
Solar air conditioning provides a great package involving benefits.
Installation expenses can be reduced through tax credits, deductions and
also refunds.
Solar air conditioning does not use any Freon or other hazardous chemicals.
Solar energy may be the best way to obtain replenishes able power.
It proves economical on long run.
Solar energy does not cause any pollution.
Sunlight is totally free. There is of course the initial investment for the
equipment. After the initial capital outlay you wont be receiving a bill every
month for the rest of your life from the electric utility.

CONCLUSION :Nowadays, Solar Cooling is both possible and reliable.Exploitation of solar

thermal energy for cooling is an efficient, intelligent and environmentally
friendly way to use renewable energy sources to meet our air conditioning
needs.
However, applications of solar cooling are actually too few. This is both the
cause and the result of the low levels of penetration of this technology, even
in markets where solar radiation is relatively high, namely those of Southern
Europe.
SOLCO is reporting the following major findings in
the diffusion of solar cooling technologies:

At local level there is a real need for the implementation of solar cooling
and the public is willing to use the technology for air conditioning
applications in the residential, commercial and
public sector, including private enterprises, hotels and hospitals.

The investment cost of solar cooling installations is higher than

conventional air conditioning
systems. As a result, relatively few installations are in place and this in turn
keeps the cost
of components (such as chillers) relatively high due to the absence of
economies of scale.
There is a lack of widespread specialised knowledge of solar cooling
technologies
amongst designers, installers and maintainers who in their majority continue
to design and promote conventional non-solar installations.
