Monday, November 23rd: Environmental Health- Classic Concerns
Textbook: 20, 21
On Moodle: What does that air pollution reading really mean?
Explain the importance of Rachel Carsons book Silent Spring.
Schneider outlines some reasons why health officials are concerned about bisphenol A
(BPA) and phthalates. Be able to list 3 reasons why officials are concerned.
List three barriers facing the advancement of the regulation of toxic chemicals in the U.S.
What strategies have been used in the United States to reduce air pollution?
Know targets from the Millennium Development Goals to ensure environmental
sustainability.
What is active transit? What are some reasons for supporting active transport?
Wednesday, November 25th: Environmental Health- Climate Change
Textbook: 23, 25
On Moodle: Live longer? Save the planet? A better diet could nail both.
Be familiar with health consequences of climate change. Understand the relationship
between the diseases and the mechanisms.
Be familiar with the health consequences human impacts of climate change as well as
its effects on population growth
What is volume reduction? List examples of volume reduction.
Understand the regional effects of climate change in the U.S.
What are some factors limiting the carrying capacity of the Earth?
Schneider discusses the vast amounts of waste present in landfills. Know three ways to
reduce the amount of waste in landfills.
Monday, November 30th: Local and Global Health Issues: Water Issues
Guest Speaker: Peggy Knapp
Textbook: 22
According to Peggy Knapp, how does the production of livestock affect water issues? On
that note, what is the easiest way to positively influence the water crisis?
Explain the relationship between water issues and population growth.
Understand what the Buffer Law is and be able to explain its purpose.

Wednesday, December 2nd: Mental Health and Mental Illness

What is de-institutionalization and how has it negatively impacted our society?

As stated in lecture, which group of illnesses is responsible for the majority of disability
in developed countries?
Understand Dr. Landos role in the Rosenhan study. How was he treated? How were most of the
pseudo-patients treated?
What is the most commonly diagnosed behavior disorder in U.S. children?
What is the most prevalent mental disorder in U.S. adults?
What mental disorder is most commonly diagnosed in children and most prevalent in
adults? (These are two different disorders.)

Be able to name and define a couple interventions that address obesity on an institutional,
school, or community level.
Monday, December 14th: Gun Violence and Public Health
Compare rates of gun violence in the U.S. to other developed countries.
Compare rates of gun violence between homicides and suicides.
Why is gun violence considered a public health issue?
Understand relationship between Congress and gun violence research
Wednesday, December 16th: Adolescent Health and Emotional Intelligence
Know the principles of the healthy youth development paradigm.
What are the 5 Cs?
Know the cognitive skills developed during adolescence.
