Spotlight on Chester Rugby Club

Congratulations must go out to all at Chester Rugby Club on a marvellous season,
culminating in victory at Twickenham on Saturday April 12th in the final of the EDF
Intermediate Cup with 21 – 18 win over near neighbours Birkenhead Park.

Chester beat the team from a higher division in a tense final where the result was
in the balance throughout the 80 minutes! Replacement Simon Love delivered the
Knockout blow for Chester, when it seemed park would put their name on the trophy.

It’s a fabulous end to a marvellous season for the club, who only the week before,
secured promotion back to North One, the league they were relegated from the
previous season.

Chester dedicated their cup-final victory to team-member Aled Evans, who sadly
passed away recently after a tragic accident at a farm in North Wales where he
worked. Our thoughts are with his family and friends and all those at the Rugby Club ,
during this difficult time.

A Super Car Day Out
At Oulton Park
The ultimate of supercars:
the Bugatti Veyron
W hat a fantastic day out can be had at
Cheshire’s Oulton Park race circuit.
The Bank holiday event proved to be a truly
eventful day as always. Oulton Park was the
venue for the opening national rounds of
the British F3 championship. F3 is a stepping
stone to the ultimate aim of its drivers to
become the Formula 1 world champion. Many
of today’s F1 drivers started this way. Past
F3 champions have included: Ayrton Senna,
Mika Hakkinen, and Rubens Barrichello.
Also taking place was the British GT
championship race with great cars such as
Aston Martins, Ferrari’s, Dodge Vipers, Ascari’s
but all of these were beaten by the Italian
supercar Lamborghini. The win made history
by becoming the first Lamborghini to win
a race in the British GT championship. Track
racing aside it was worth the entrance fee just
to walk around at leisure and see the teams of
mechanics at work, fine tuning the amazing
engines that power these magnificent
machines round the track. Although millions
of pounds worth of cars are on show you are
free to mingle amongst them taking as many
pictures as you like without great concern
from the team owners. The highlight of the
event for us was the absolutely stunning
array of supercars on display; everybody’s
personal favourite was there whether it be
the Lamborghini Gallardo, Ferrari 599, Bentley
GT, Aston Martin V8 Vantage, Audi R8 but
perhaps even all of these were overshadowed
by the exquisitely prestigious Bugatti Veyron
16.4. The Bugatti Veyron is the ultimate
of supercars. It is powered by two 4.0 litre
V8 engines that produce a mind boggling
1000bhp. At £840,000 it is the fastest, most
powerful, most expensive production car on
sale today. It has a whopping sixteen cylinders
and four turbo chargers which allows the car
to reach an unbelievable 252mph, no that’s
not a printing error it cruises to 252mph!
No wonder you have to have tyres that are
specially made by Michelin with a width
of over half a metre to carry you to this top
speed safely. Remember the once fastest road
car, the McLaren F1, just imagine a drag race
between the two. If you allowed the McLaren
to reach 120mph before letting the Bugatti
start the Bugatti would still beat the McLaren
to 200mph! NOW THATS FAST.

£1 Appeal’ to pay for an essential up-
grade of its helicopters to the New Genera-
tion model by 2009 – in line with Civil Avia-
tion Authority legislation. It means that the
service will now need to generate additional
funds to pay for the £4million a year cost of
keeping its three air ambulances flying.

ing available to the Charity so all monies
are generated through donations from the

 The Message is Getting Through!

R egular readers will by now be aware of my campaign to educate accident victims not to ring claims companies
or insurers or to let anyone take their details and sell them to a solicitor who is prepared to pay. By offering

Sticky Chicken Drumsticks
These drumsticks are always popular
– provide plenty of napkins for wiping
sticky fingers or provide finger bowls
with a slice of lemon.
You will need
10 chicken drumsticks
4 tbsp fine-cut marmalade
1 tbsp Worcester sauce
Grated rind and juice of ½ orange
Salt & pepper
Cherry tomatoes
Salad leaves
Serves 4
Recipe
1. Using a sharp knife, make 2 – 3 slashes in the flesh of each chicken
drumstick.
2. Bring a large saucepan of water to the boil and add the chicken drumsticks.
Cover the pan, return to the boil and cook for 5 – 10 minutes. Remove the
chicken and drain thoroughly.
3. Meanwhile, make the baste. Place the orange marmalade, Worcestershire
sauce, orange rind and juice and salt and pepper to taste in a small
saucepan. Heat gently, stirring continuously, until the marmalade melts
and all of the ingredients are well combined.
4. Brush the baste over the par-cooked chicken drumsticks and transfer
them to the grill to complete cooking. Grill for about 10 mins, turning and
basting frequently with the remaining baste.
5. Carefully thread 3 cherry tomatoes on to a skewer and return to the grill
for 1 – 2 minutes.
6. Transfer the chicken drumsticks to the serving plates. Serve with the
cherry tomato skewers and a selection of fresh salad leaves

Bluebell Season!
M ay is traditionally the month of flowers
and the blue bell has been voted one
of the nation’s top favourites. For me there
are few sights more delightful than the haze
of gently swaying blue that carpets our
woodlands in late spring. There are three
common species, the native, the Spanish
and a hybrid and (you’ve guessed it) it’s the
native variety that is probably the most at
risk from environmental damage. The native
variety has a drooping stem with bells on
one side unlike the Spanish, which tends
to be upright with bells all round. It’s best
not to pick them (they don’t last long as cut

illegal to uproot them in the countryside.

Bluebell Folklore
The folklore surrounding this fabulous plant
is varied and bizarre. It has been known
by many different names including the
wonderfully eccentric ‘Cuckoo’s Boots’ and
‘Granfer Gribbles’ (let me know if you have a
translation for that!) but my favourite has to
be ‘Sapphire Queen’, very appropriate!
In the ‘language of flowers’ it has been given
a variety of meanings including constancy,
fidelity, sorrowful regret and forgiveness.
The flower was often associated with fairies.
If you heard the sound of a blue bell
ringing it was thought that either
you were close to death or the
wee folk were about to cart you
off never to be seen again (there
are one or two more plausible
explanations for hearing blue bells
that spring to mind!) Beggars
discovered that a poultice
of blue bells applied to the
skin would produce a crop
of sores sufficient to
increase donations
hence another
name
‘beggar’s
weed’.
Its blue
pigment has been used as a dye and the sap
was used as glue for book binding, fletching
arrows and stiffening those flamboyant
Elizabethan collars. Like many glues, the sap
is toxic to humans but not to badgers who
view the bulbs rather as I would a prime
pickled onion.

and enthusiasm are what makes all his
wines so special. It’s not all Sauvignon Blanc
y’know, there’s a whole lot of wine going
on...
Our first sample was one of my favourites.
Vidal’s Marlborough-grown Riesling
(£7.75) was the perfect aperitif wine with
its fresh, crisp, floral and fruit flavours, a
refreshing balancing acidity, a slight off-dry
character, and that trademark honeyed
finish. Absolutely delicious. Vidal Wines was
Villa Maria has won more awards than any
other New Zealand winery, and we soon
saw why. The Single Vineyard Chardonnay
2005, for example, was stunning. At £15.25
you’d expect it to be of course, but the
low-yielding Fletcher vineyard in the Wairau
Valley of Marlborough has perfect free-
draining gravelly soils, in one of the warmest truly surprising, thanks to a portion being

FOOTBALL CRAZY
Upton Junior Football Club
was formed in 1997 when Upton Villa and Upton United
joined forces.
They currently play on the fields at the Dale MOD camp,
which is regarded as one of the best playing surfaces in
Chester, with up to six games being played at any one time.

The club covers every age group from six to sixteen
and plays a big role in the current Chester and district
league as well as the Ellesmere Port league.
Chris Andrews, the current secretary and Neil
Morgan the last Chairman brought the club forward
to where it currently stands with Neil gaining the club
F.A charter standard status. Kevin Stanley, the current
Chairman, together with Neil, helped Upton to gain
F.A Charter development status. Upton JFC are proud
to be the only club in Chester to have this status.
They work closely with the community and are
linked to Acresfield Primary school, Upton Heath
Primary school, Manley Village Primary school and
Upton-by-Chester High School. They are also proud to
be linked to Everton FC through a community football
program and never turn down any child that wish to
play football. Upton JFC strive to make their players
better people both on and off the field.
Holland 2008 Haarlem
Upton JFC took four squads on their annual tour to
Holland this Easter, taking one under 11’s team and
three under 14’s. Last year Upton JFC under 13’s
came home as winners from a similar tournament,
the “Top of Holland” tournament in Assen.
This year the venue was Haarlem and the
competition was called the “Easter Classic”, although
the weather that they encountered made it look more
like Christmas. Waterlogged pitches on the Saturday
ensured that all of the under 14’s matches were
called off but the under 11’s carried on regardless on
artificial pitches.
The under 14’s teams went to the under 11’s venue
to cheer them on and luckily found two unused,
playable pitches. Several other under 14’s teams from
Ireland, Scotland and England also arrived from the
cancelled tournament and it didn’t take long before
the Upton coaches organized a mini tournament.
The under 11’s meanwhile qualified for the
Sunday finals by beating three Dutch teams and
drawing against one other, finally coming second in
their group. They were the only English team to go
through.
On Sunday morning snow covered most of
Southern England and it wasn’t long until it hit
Holland, just before kick off. The referees decided to
continue and both age groups ended up playing in
conditions that English referees would not allow in
this present climate of Risk Assessments.
The under 11’s, having only lost one of their games
all weekend, came a credible 5th out of 25 mostly
Dutch teams.
The three under 14’s teams came 1st, 3rd and 5th
in their mini tournament, which unfortunately did not
involve any Dutch teams due to the cancellation the
previous day.
All the boys from both age groups thoroughly
enjoyed their long weekend away and said that they
would do it all over again given the chance next year.
Behavior was never an issue and, considering the
weather, distance of journey and being away from
home, they were a credit to the club.
Yet again Upton JFC has gone to Holland and like
last year, showed our continental friends just how
good English football is.
It as always nice to add Silverware to our growing
collection, but more importantly is the way in which
we do it with outstanding behavior and credibility.

importantly, the boys involved.

I have many years experience involving special educational
needs assessment and remediation. I have two sons who are
dyslexic. My youngest son also has Irlen syndrome and
auditory processing difficulties. After many frustrating years of
taking him to various centres and trying different colour
overlays and Irlen glasses I read about Harris filter lenses which
help synchronise the speed of light reaching the eyes and so
reduces the problems caused by visual distortions such as
scotopic sensitivity or Irlen.
I was so impressed by the rapid improvement in my sons
reading skills that I trained as a Harris practitioner and I am the
only person in the North West offering assessments and

educational audiologist and special needs teacher I have also
worked with many students who have communication
disorders and auditory processing difficulties.
Some have great difficulty remembering verbal or written
instructions and struggle to develop skills involving
comprehension due to poor short term memory problems.
Others find it extremely difficult to hear speech in noise,
although they may have normal hearing. They may find it hard
to concentrate when there is any type of background noise or
show hypersensitivity to certain sounds and frequencies which
can cause great discomfort. Research has shown that music
therapy can help improve listening skills.
