Home Automation System Using Wi Fi

Abstract:
In recent years number of network enabled digital
devices are present at homes. With the rapid expansion of the
internet the owners have been requesting remote controlling
on in-home devices. This android based home automation
system allows multiple users to control the application by
android app or through web site.

Introduction:
The home automation is the introduction of technology
within home to enhance in-home devices. Recently the home
automation becomes a popular field of research by the
introduction of different technologies such as remote control
systems, network enabled devices and internet technologies.
Home automation aims the orchestration of digital devices to
provide user real comfort with security and ability to monitor
multiple devices. Traditional home automation systems
involve the control of digital devices which provide the
functions such as heating, lighting and shading.
The benefits of home automation systems (the smart
house systems) are listed as safety, comfort, power saving and
communications. As the systems provide these benefits, some
technical requirements must be also respected such as low
cost, plug and play, flexibility, easiness of use and reliability.
The system is built to serve multiple users, using up-to-date
and emerging technologies, such as Google Cloud Platform,

in order to support the communication between the main

hardware components of the system.

Existing System:
There have been significant systems and numerous
approaches for the home automation systems. There are
several currently home automation systems such as remote
control systems, network enabled devices and internet
technologies.
Bluetooth based home automation system involves a
primary controller and a set of Bluetooth sub-controllers in
which each controller is physically connected to an individual
home device. The sub-controllers are responsible to send all
messages to primary controller. Although the system reduces
physical wiring through the use of Bluetooth technology it has
the disadvantage of incurring an access delay due to the
sharing of a single Bluetooth module between numerous
devices.
In a Java based home automation system, an embedded
board which is integrated into a personal Computer based web
server is physically connected to all home devices. Java
technology used in the system provides a built in security.
However, the use of a high end computer and the wired
installation per home increases the expense of the system.

Proposed System:

Main components of the proposed system are pointed out

with diagrams depicting the communication infrastructures
where those parts are in-use which are as shown below.

The system mainly and simply involves the following

three components: local hardware, web server, and mobile
smart device.
The local hardware includes the i.MX53 card and the
local network devices to connect household appliances.
The web server computer offers Google Cloud
Messaging (GCM) service to connect the system with the
local hardware and the mobile smart devices.
Google Cloud Platform is used for supporting the
bidirectional communication between local device and web
server and also mobile device and web server. The web server
also provides a web site for the users of the system (the
customers and the administrators) to deal with the records
stored in the database of the system.
The last component is the mobile smart device running
Android operating system, such as smart phone or tablet, on
which the Android application software of the system is
installed to make the mobile customers contact with and
manage the in home devices via the server.

Modules:
1. Local Hardware Configuration (.MX53 card)
2. ARM Controller Configuration
3. Web Server Configuration with GCM service.
4. Android Mobile App for use
5. Web Application Interface

Advantages:
1. The smart house systems provides benefits such as
safety, comfort, power saving and communications.
2. Google distributed services provide data security.
3. Free cloud services with public cloud choice and only
one server for all homes make system cost effective.
4. The same friendly GUI is used in both local hardware
and mobile device hence user friendly.
5. The application is mobile, the data is accessed from
everywhere, and the system is up any time.

Disadvantages:
1. Networking between the new appliance and the local
hardware is required.
2. As GCM service is used as public and free, sometimes
the messages are received by the mobile device with a
reasonable delay.

3. System is more costly expensive because required costly

devices.
