The

Vol 9 No 50

By Jessica Howard
The Moorabool Shire was hit with wild fire over the
weekend that blazed through more than 4600 hectares of
land, destroying 12 homes and 30 sheds.
Residents from Scotsburn, Elaine, Mount Doran, Clarendon,
and Durham Lead were forced to flee their homes as Victorian
firefighters battled the blaze in extreme weather conditions.
The CFA have confirmed 12 houses in total were destroyed;
Scotsburn (six), Clarendon (three), Durham Lead (two) and
Elaine (one), with another four damaged to the point of being
uninhabitable.
A total of 1030 sheep and five horses died at Narmbool
the 2000-hectare property located at Elaine and owned and
operated by Sovereign Hill.
A CFA spokesperson said they were unable to confirm what
ignited the fire, however it was believed to have started on
private land.
The fast-moving blaze began on Finns Road in Scotsburn on
Saturday afternoon.
At 10pm that evening, more than 150 fearful residents
gathered in the Buninyong Town Hall for a community
meeting.
Buninyong police officer, Peter Anderson said a good
turnout showed how strong the community was.
We are going to need that strength over the next couple of
days, he said.
A Relief Centre in Ballan was established by the Moorabool
Shire Council on Saturday evening, before a second Relief
Centre was opened at Buninyong the following morning.
Moorabool Shire Council CEO Rob Croxford said the
decision to set up the relief centres came at the request of the
Incident Control Centre.
In hindsight it may have been prudent to have Buninyong
up earlier, but to resource two centres late Saturday night
would have been impossible. Ballan was out of harms way,
he said.
The City of Ballarat offered assistance and have been a
significant contributor from Sunday on. We will put out
requests to other neighbouring shires and to the State
Government for support in coming days.
With 523 firefighters, 69 tankers and three bulldozers
deployed over two days, the blaze was brought under control
by 8pm on Sunday after a welcome cool change arrived, with
crews continuing to patrol the area through the evening.
Golden Plains Shire Council failed to respond to questions
regarding their involvement and assistance with the fires,
emergency service crews and the efforts to engage with the
Moorabool Shire council.

Squashing
the firebugs

By Jessica Howard
Local CFA and Police are
taking a zero tolerance approach to firebugs following
two incidents in Bacchus
Marsh this month.
The volunteers with the
Bacchus Marsh Fire Brigade
attended two suspicious
fires around Darley Park late
on Friday, December 4 and
Sunday, December 6.
Moorabool Crime Investigation detectives are investigating the fires.

Bacchus Marsh Senior Constable Glenn Saw said it was

unknown whether the fires

were linked, however there

were three current suspects.
He said the fires, which occurred near Fitzroy Street in
Bacchus Marsh, damaged
surrounding grasses and
bush.

A member of the public was

recently convicted and fined
as a result of being charged
with burning off during last
years fire danger period.
The maximum penalty for
intentionally or recklessly
causing a bushfire is 15 years
imprisonment and a fine of
over $36,000.

Officer Anthony Pearce said

it was disappointing that

due to people breaching the
law.
CFA and police will pursue charges against any
person who burns illegally
when fire restrictions are in

Deliberately and recklessly

destroy communities, infrastructure, livestock and human life.

The CFA Fire Danger Period

Mans best friend exposed!

By Jessica Howard
Bill Robertson (pictured) is
ready to unleash his book on
the world.
The Ballan resident has
spent the past 15 years researching and writing about
his favourite canine and
has now released the book
Origins of the Australian
Kelpie: Exposing The Myths
and Fabrications From The
Past.
Mr Robertson said he had
identified a number of serious inconsistencies in the
early history of the Kelpie
breed, so decided it was time
to find out the truth.
I was originally developing a story for a documentary program, which is
now very well established
amongst Kelpie people, however during my research I
came to the realisation that it
was all a fairy tale nothing
worked, he said.
There were 26 different
stories on how the Kelpie
dog evolved. Even today
people are fabricating their
own stories, because what
happens throughout history
is that people protect their
own interpretations and that
is what they base the breed
on.
With the help of his wife
Kerry, Mr Robertson trav-

elled through England,

Wales and the North of Scotland in order to follow the
dog that contributed to the
Kelpie breed in the 1860s.
The Collie had a very important contribution to the
evolution of the Kelpie, so
we visited everywhere that
the relevant history had
occurred.
We researched for hours
on end and there was a lot
of foot slogging because the
Internet wasnt very well established at that time. I went

from archive to archive, I

visited Tasmania, Queensland, Hamilton, New South
Wales, Casterton you name
it, if a kelpie had been there I
went too.
Mr Robertson said whilst
the lack of Internet access
made for an expensive pursuit of information, it also
allowed him to establish
credible sources.
The Internet can make a
point, which may give you
a clue as to where the story
lies, but it doesnt tell you

even one-tenth of the history. I visited real places and

real people you just cant
get that physical research
online, he said.
Now I have a database
of about 15,000 newspaper
reports from 1832 right
through to 1956. All my research is now available at
a press of a button. It was a
very slow and tedious process, but there were a couple of Eureka! moments
which were able to keep me
going.

Mr Robertson said although

excited, he was relieved to
finally see the completion of
the book.
I think that, like most
writers, when I started writing I didnt know where I
was going to go in terms of
continuity. I knew I wanted
to appeal to a general audience and not just the Kelpie
enthusiasts, so I had to prioritise all of this research that I
had collected over 12 years.
As a video producer I was

used to refining a lot of information into one product, but

it was still a very long process. I hope that in a nutshell,
I have provided readers with
the truth, because this is
what really happened.
Origins of the Australian
Kelpie: Exposing The Myths
and Fabrications From The
Past is a 354-page hard
cover book and is available online at https://www.
kelpiehistory.com, just in
time for that great Christmas gift.

Singing was the festive tradition

By Jessica Howard
Carols by Candlelight holds
a special place in the heart of
Liba Novak.
The 95-year-old Bacchus
Marsh resident still recalls
when the annual Christmas
tradition was held on the
back of a hire truck, with
tree branches nailed to the
side for decoration.
Ms Novak, who migrated
to Bacchus Marsh from Central Europe in 1952, said she
joined the local amateur theatrical group The Bacchus
Marsh Players and began
performing in plays and
musicals.
The group was formed in
the late 1950s and early 60s,
we produced one straight
play and one musical each
year, plus Carols by Candlelight every December, she
said.
There were no sophisticated sound systems back then.
We simply borrowed a truck
from Shelleys Transport,
nailed tree branches to the
sides to make it look festive,
borrowed an organ from
Evelyn Thomas and secured
it to the front of the tray with
a rope, and then all piled in

Ms Novak said the group
drove around the streets of
Bacchus Marsh and stopped
under streetlights to sing
carols.
Bacchus Marsh was just a
small town back then, with
only the four main streets
Gell Street, Young Street,

Grant Street and Main

Street.
People came from their
houses to join in and enjoy
the traditional carols. Many
gave us donations, which
we later donated to the Lady

Rural communities king hit Council Clips

By Kate Taylor

Three
polling
booths
in Moorabool will be
closed, prompting outrage
at the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC)
announcement.
Booths at Clarkes Hill,
Springbank and Mt Wallace
will all be closed.
Central Ward Councillor
Paul Tatchell said voters
have every right to be angry
about the closure, which he
said is a political decision.
They are penny pinching
on polling booths, Cr Tatchell said.
This is about influence, its
about party influence, its
about under representation
and its about manipulating
the regional areas that have
been treated with contempt.
Just when people are contemplating their futures on
farms, and they take away
something like a polling
booth.
Cr Tatchell said he has had

voters call him and say they

will not be voting at next
years anticipated federal
election.
They say they wont vote,
that theyd rather pay the
fine; and that itd be cheaper
than travelling to vote. They
think They dont care about
us, we dont care about voting for them.
Theyre insulted; the polling booth is where we go on
an election day, its part of
our community spirit - you
take it away like it doesnt
matter?
Cr Tatchell said that on
principle, people do not
want to postal vote and he
called on member for Ballarat Catherine King to stand
up for Moorabool.
Wheres one of our members standing up and going
well thats unfair.
Its the Electoral Commission that did it; but its the
pollies that signed it off.
Woodlands Ward Councillor Pat Toohey also objected

to the closing of the booths,

two of which are in his
Woodlands Ward.
Its clearly a diminishing of
services to rural communities and it should put many
other larger rural communities on notice that service rationalisation means peoples
democratic right to vote is in
jeopardy, Cr Toohey said.
Its putting a considerable
increase in cost and time for
rural communities to travel
an extensive distance to take
what is every Australians
democratic right.
Cr Toohey said the closures
would also impact on fundraising, as communities hold
barbecues and other activities on polling day.
Closures impact on fundraising and community
wellbeing; people had the
opportunity to come together as a community and have
pride in their area.
Cr Toohey was diplomatic
when speaking about whether the closures could have

been politically motivated.

I know that our federal
member was consulted on
these decisions, as I think
all federal members across
Australia may well have
been, and its disappointing
that those areas that now see
themselves without polling
booths werent as strongly
represented as other areas.
Ms King responded to questions on the closures saying
that the AEC is an independent statutory authority.
The AEC is under budgetary pressure, and as a result
it has closed 730 polling
booths across the country.
Unfortunately the closure of
these booths in the Ballarat
electorate is part of that. I
of course would rather none
closed.
The booths were closed nationally because they were
under-performing, meaning not enough votes are cast
to justify the cost of opening
them.

A fair go is all Moorabool

Shire Council is asking for as
part of a review into recovering costs of planning scheme
amendments.
Councillors voted at the
December council meeting
to write to the Municipal Association of Victoria (MAV),
which is conducting the review of planning fee regulations, to ask for fairer sharing
of the costs involved in processing a planning scheme
amendment, between council and proponents.
The
current
situation
where the Government sets
fees for a process that Local
Government must undertake
on its behalf without consideration of the true costs
is unequitable. It creates a
situation where Council may
not be able to afford to implement its strategic priorities
due to the costs encountered
in processing proponent led
amendments, read a report
on the submission.
The submission reasserts
the position made by council
in a submission earlier this

year, and outlines that since

the 1980s planning fees have
gone backwards.
Providing a minimum of
$18,000 subsidy to private
developers per amendment
is not sustainable in the current Victorian climate of rate
capping, read the report.
Council asked for planning scheme amendment
processes to be removed
from the state governments
planning fee regulations to
allow the full cost to be recovered by council but if
not, council requested that
proponents be forced to pay
for notification and panels.
The submission also accuses the state government
of cost-shifting onto local
councils, and calls on state
agencies to take on the role
of planning authorities for
key processes, as well as rezoning to facilitate land sales
with local government.
It also calls on the state
government to require council officers to fully assess
amendment requests prior to
seeking authorisation from
council.

Dear Editor,
After reading Tom Kingstons nasty vitriolic article
on Tony Abbott and other
politicians, for no other reason than the fact that they
do not agree with his opinions on Climate Change and
Global Warming and having read Toms Repetitious
Dreck in his articles in the
Moorabool News for years, it
has finally prompted me to
respond.
To begin, I quite clearly
state that I am not a Climate
Change denier because the
climate is and will continue
to constantly change and the
planet will continue to vary
between Warming and
Cooling phases. I am in fact
very driven by all aspects of
sustainability having completed a Diploma of Sustainability, and replacing the
use of Fossil Fuels with Renewable Energy, I designed,
built and live in my version
of a Sustainable House and
have helped to establish a
local Community Garden
which encapsulates and
teaches all aspects of sustainable, organic gardening.
I note that over the years

of reading his articles, Tom

has constantly and totally
laid the blame for Climate
Change and Global warming on mankind and in particular Co2 emissions and
has never acknowledged the
major cause of the Earths
continuous changing climate and warming/cooling
phases.
Fact - The earth tilts/oscillates by several degrees on
its axis as it rotates about its
axis and orbits around the
Sun. This tilt of the earths
axis pushes the North and/
or South poles closer to the
Sun in an alternating pattern
causing the warming of the
poles and changing the rate
at which the ice shelf spreads
or melts.
This tilt/oscillation of the
Earths axis also diverts the
ocean currents that changes
and sets up warming and/or
cooling events in the oceans,
also changes the trajectory
and direction of the high
altitude winds around the
Earth.
These events drive changes
in weather patterns around
the world, which in turn
causes droughts and/or

flooding and the rise and fall

in the surface levels of the
oceans.
Yes, excessive Co2 in the
atmosphere will form a high
altitude blanket, which will
warm the planet. However,
we should bear in mind
that since the beginning of
the Industrial Revolution in
the early 18th century, and
throughout the 19th and late
into the 20th century when
the pollution was chronic in
the western world, the average temperature throughout
the world has risen less than
1 degree Celsius and as the
western world has cleaned
up its act, has stabilised over
the past 20 years. However,
as China and India build
their industries, they also
need to clean up their acts
on the pollution front.
It is time that mankind
started to address the real
problems on this planet,
these being Over Population, the irresponsible and
greedy use of finite elements
and minerals including fossil fuels and saving them to
be used sparingly into the
future for other than creating energy. Then, concen-

trate its efforts on Sustainability through Renewable

Energy, Recycling, Reforestation changing the building regulations and creating
jobs in new industries.
Tom, people will listen
more and pay more attention
if you redirect your message
and efforts more towards
Sustainability and less at

Perspective

with Paul Tatchell

Budgets are simple things really!

TOM

The smooth talking Scott

Morrison handed down the
mid-year budget revealing a
$37.4 billion blowout, pushing the national debt to a
staggering $278 billion.
For those of us that struggle
to contemplate all of those
zeros in $278 billion, its costing us punters about $36.9
million per day to maintain
the Nations credit card, up
from $30.6 million per day
last year.
If you think thats bad news,
a quick butchers hook at
the next four years shows
a steep climb to $364.5 billion and we are only talking
about the cash book. Gross
debt not including, Government Assets will rise from
$429 billion to $552 billion
over the same period.
When you consider the
root of the problem is the
unrealistic optimism shown
by successive treasurers in
terms of revenue forecasts
and the understatement of
expenses, even the most gullible would be more nervous about the future than a
Werribee duck in a sewerage

farm tsunami!
Searching for economic
credibility in Canberra is
like trying to find a 3 inch
nail at Sims metals; youve
got the job ahead of you!
Its any wonder the whispers of a GST increase are
building to a subtle roar;
you have the States and Territories that couldnt balance
an egg on a spoon, let alone
a cheque book, and the Feds
spending money, not just
like drunken sailors, but like
a flotilla of seamen that have
never seen land before.
Meanwhile back in the Senate, that fourth tier of over
governance, with enough
cartoon characters to make
Walt Disney look like the
Grim Reaper, argues its way
through extravagant wish
lists doing whimsical deals
about as relevant as the
Easter Bunny on Christmas
morning.
When you consider the Senate has to sign off on every
rubber cheque that makes its
way through the House of
Representatives, the asylum

would be better off with the

Nuts in charge!
Imagine letting Jacqui Lambie loose on the Nations Visa
card; it would be like putting
Pauline Hanson in charge of
the kitchen on Nauru Island.
Lambie has never had a job
or a feed that wasnt funded
by the taxpayer, and Hanson
has made a living out of losing elections.
Make no mistake, this
whole GST charade is about
trying to balance the books;
when the tax finally got
across the line after almost
ten years of debate in 2000,
it made the treasurer Peter
Costello look like a magician
as he hit surplus targets like
a blindfolded knife thrower.
The GST was so confusing
to the average punter that
no-one took any notice of
the turbo charged tax invasion that boosted Government revenues higher than
Bob Marley at a gunge fest;
combine that with the Katos
running amok in the West
and there was more dough
in the Federal Coffers than
particles of sand at a beach

party in Dubai!
The Chinese were making stuff like every day was
chop suey Tuesday, and we
were supplying the ingredients; whilst the Chinese ingredients had been around
for a while and taught Government how to Rolls Royce
a policy, the GST paid the
Visa!
The problem with Rolls
Royce policies is they need a
lot of fuel, and when the Katos started to use less-diesel
when the Chinese slowed
down on the chop suey, the
GST designed to feed the
States and Territories became simply another tax.
The State policies born from
GST started to get hunger
pains as the GST windfall
became the Windex for wiping away interest on the Federal debt.
Its 15 years since the GST
started feeding the hungry
beast, and the beast gets
hungrier. The mining boom
doesnt boom anymore, but
that doesnt mean its busted, its just taking a reality

check, and thats what the

Government needs; a reality
check!
You dont have to be a horticulturist to know there is no
such thing as a money tree;
if you spend more than you
earn, its either on credit or
through savings; the only
other method will have you
sitting in front of a Magistrate for buying something
you had no intentions of
paying for!
If something unforeseen occurs, some have the ability
to get credit, and you rejig
the weekly budget to pay the
creditor; whilst this may appear to be an over simplification of basic economics, you
can write a 4000 page paper
on why x-y=z, but at the end
of the day, the formula remains the same.
Surplus and deficit are biproducts of a simple budget;
if you spend less than you
make you will have a surplus, and if you spend more
than you make you will have
a deficit.
Normal everyday people

Environmental Opinion

manage their household

budgets every day, using the
simple premise of not spending more than they earn. I
could understand Governments using deficit budget
models to invest in our
economy to maintain future
earnings, but the continual
overstating of revenues for
political purpose is reckless
and myopic.
Senate squabbling and Party politics have stepped over
common sense principles;
opportunities to use the economic conditions over the
last 25 years to sure up future investment and develop
an economic foundation for
the future.
The compounding debt has
left a legacy for our children
and our grandchildren that
will have a day of reckoning;
its time our political Partys
united by putting the political propaganda on hold, and
put their efforts into reducing the debt, and concentrate
on economic sustainability; its about priorities not
politics!

The environment powered by good people

Scott Jordon who is the

spokesman for Save the
Tarkine Coalition rescues
orphaned animals. It is a
rarity for Scott to turn up to
any meeting without a very
small orphaned animal.
He and his wife have many
small wallabies, wombats,
and paddymelons mainly,
in their backyard and also
in their home. Scott has to
train these orphans in all the
ways that their mothers, had
they survived a car or truck,
would have. Some of the
skills these orphans need do
not only involve eating but
toilet training. Obviously
this training involves some
practices that are best left
unsaid in a polite newspaper such as The Moorabool
News. Suffice it to say this
training is not something
you would see in the fash-

ions on the field at the Melbourne Cup. And Scott and

his wife do this day in and
day out. Sometimes we humans do good things for our
fellow beings.
As this is Christmas let us
rejoice in what some of us
humans do that is good for
our fellow travellers and
their habitats.
Paris had some good people
present trying to do good
things for the environment.
Thanks to all those good
people who fought for this
agreement. May we all continue the fight? There will be
more on the mechanisms of
Paris, and our government,
next year.
We all remember scientists
and writers like Rachel Carson who in her book Silent
Spring exposed the dangers
of synthetic pesticides. With-

in a decade of her releasing

this book most uses of DTD
had been prohibited. Now,
for example, the population
of bald eagles in the USA is
growing and they have not
become extinct. This is just
one example among millions
worldwide. Around the
word today there are many
Endangered Species Acts
which aim at saving our fellow species.
For another example of good
people doing good things
lets go to America. To rescue California condors, the
largest land bird in America,
which had dwindled to just
22 individuals, wildlife biologists raised condor chicks
using puppets. They created
fake power lines to train the
bird not to electrocute themselves. To teach them not to
eat flesh, they wired garbage

to deliver a mild shock. They

vaccinated every single condor, now about 400, against
West Nile virus. They also
routinely test the birds for
lead poisoning that apparently happens when they
eat carcases that have died
as a result of being shot. The
effort in the US to save the
whooping crane has also involved many hours of dedication by volunteers. Each
year, for example, a team of
pilots flying ultralight aircraft teaches a new cohort of
captive-raised crane chicks
how to migrate south for the
winter.
Then we have the millions
of people worldwide who
donate generously to environment groups.
Also this year the Commonwealth Bank and NAB
announced new policies that

acknowledge the need to

limit global warming to less
than two degrees and the
important role that they, as
financial institutions, play in
helping reduce carbon emissions to reach that goal. It
was many, many good people who pressured the banks
to do better and therefore
achieved this.
And it is thanks to all the
good people throughout the
US that President Obama
has recently rejected the
Presidential Permit for the
Keystone XL tar sands pipeline! According to all reports
a head of state has never
rejected a major fossil fuel
project because of its climate
impacts before. Good people
doing good achieved this.
President Obamas action is
a reflection of the courage
shown by thousands of peo-

ple who have sat in, marched

and organised (and opened
a lot of emails) against this
pipeline.
Powered by good people,
the tide is turning against
the fossil fuel industry -every major new project
they propose is being met
by organised opposition on
the ground, and some politicians are lining up to stand
behind this movement and
say that we must keep the
vast majority of fossil fuels
underground. And after the
Paris agreement it is up to
good people in Australia to
continue to protect our future from our governments.
Might I wish all the readers of this opinion piece a
restful and environmentally
peaceful Christmas and
New Year.

Court in action

A man who fled the scene of a

single vehicle car crash has appeared in court.
Ryan Millington, 25, pleaded
guilty to charges of careless
driving and failing to report an
accident to police in the Bacchus
Marsh Magistrates Court on Friday (December 18).
At about 11:20pm on September
6, Bacchus Marsh police were
notified of a white Holden Sedan
that had crashed into a safety
fence near Labilliere Street.
A witness allegedly observed
three males attempting to move
the car off the nature strip following the crash.
However, upon attending the
scene, Police did not find any
suspects and the registration
plates had been removed from
the vehicle.
A search warrant was executed

and a number of identifying

items were found, including outdated registration details and
Millingtons passport.
The accused, who resides in
Myrniong, was questioned at
the Bacchus Marsh Police Station
at a later date. He made full admissions to driving the car, but
would not elaborate on the crash.
CCTV footage was obtained
from a nearby shop, which
showed Millingtons vehicle
speeding towards the intersection at Labilliere and Grant
Streets.
Millington lost control of the
vehicle, doing a 360-degree spin
before crashing into the safety
fence.
He then attempts to drive from
the scene, with heavy smoke
emerging from the vehicle.
Millingtons defence lawyer said
the friends of his client attempted to help move the car, however,

with no luck, left the scene.

He said his client removed the
plates from the vehicle, as he
feared someone else would take
them.
In hindsight, he fully understands that leaving the scene,
rather than staying and reporting the crash, only aggravated
the situation to result in a more
major charge, he said.
However, in a way, what happened was only minor and if he
had gone to the police it would
have remained minor. It was stupid, he understands that.
Magistrate Robinson agreed
that Millingtons behaviour was
nothing less than stupidity and
ordered him to pay a fine with a
bit of a sting.
Millington received a $1500 fine
with conviction, and was ordered to pay $300 to the Moorabool Shire Council in restitution
for the fence.

CEO, REIV
There is an old adage that
you have to spend money
to make money and, when
it comes to marketing property, there is truth in that.
How are you going to sell
your home if nobody knows
about it?
The advent of the internet
has some vendors believing a substantial marketing
campaign for their home or
investment property is no
longer necessary. After all,
most people now begin their
property search online and
many attending open homes
have researched the property and the area.
Theres another old saying:
first impressions matter, and
scientific evidence supports
this. Whether in print or
online, your marketing can
determine not only buyers
preconceived ideas when
they arrive to look at your
home, but whether they
show up at all.
The impression your home
makes results from the
whole package you present:
headline, description and
photographs. Your estate
agent is qualified to advise
you on this. Marketing is an
important part of your sales
campaign and assists in
achieving the best possible
price for your home.
Properties on online portals
such as realestateview.com.
au can be viewed around
the state, interstate or even
overseas.

The agent has years, sometimes decades, of experience

in writing attention-grabbing headlines and boiling
down your propertys key
points to a few words, summing it up for those glancing
quickly at your advertisement. Agents know what
features to highlight and in
what order, and some agencies employ professional real
estate advertisement copywriters to help with this.
Presentation of your home
is crucial, but even before
the buyers arrive at the open
for inspection most will
have looked at your online
photographs.
Does your
house look immaculate, yet
welcoming; does it look spacious and desirable? Does it
appeal to a broad range of
buyers?
Your agent will offer tips
on what work to carry out,
whether you need to store
belongings or engage a stylist to present your home in
the best possible light. Most
agents work with stylists
whose results have been
shown to lift the sale price of
homes they have worked on.
There are many marketing options: internet advertising, paying extra for
premium placement, print
advertising of various sizes
in metropolitan and local media, agency window
boards, signboards with
photographs, flyers and local
letterboxing. Deciding what
to invest in can be tricky
after all, who wants to spend
money unnecessarily?
Your agent has local knowledge and is trained to assess
the best marketing for your
home. Is it a quality home
in an attractive location, do
you need to sell fast, does it
have faults making it a hard
sell, is it a type thats in demand? So spend to sell, but
take your agents advice and
spend wisely.

A little birdie asked them to try golf

By Jessica Howard
If golf is a foreign sport to
you, dont worry, because
the Bacchus Marsh Golf
Club has you covered.
With the assistance of VicHealth and a Moorabool
Shire Community Grant, the
local club has invested in the
new SNAG golf equipment.
Starting New at Golf is a
concept that is specifically
designed to teach anyone the
fundamentals of golf. The
easy and fun game contains
all the elements of golf but in
a modified form.
Professional golfer and director at the Bacchus Marsh
Golf Club Pro Shop, Phil
OBryan said the SNAG
program and equipment
was specifically designed to
teach all aspects of the game,
including the physical, mental and emotional.
It is simple and fun to use
and has been enthusiastically embraced by all of the
families at our junior clinics, he said.

The equipment includes

plastic clubs, Velcro multicoloured balls and targets
that make it very simple for
all participants to have fun
while learning the skills required to master the game.
Mr OBryan said the club
planned to use the equipment for their young participants and all age groups
starting out.
If you get the fundamentals right, then it is an easy
transition to using the smaller golf ball and real golf
clubs, he said.
The training program and
the equipment is ideal for
use in any location including indoors, so we will be
offering the program to all
schools in the area, older
age groups and disability
services.
Mr OBryan thanked VicHealth and the Moorabool
Shire Council for their support and funding, and the
opportunity to engage more
people in the benefits of golf.

New coach signs

two year deal

By Jessica Howard
Travis Hodgson has taken
the helm as the new senior
coach for Bacchus Marsh
Football Club.
Crossing over from the
Northern Football League,
Hodgson will fill the vacancy of former North Melbourne player Cameron
Richardson, who stepped
down due to family and
work commitments.
With over a decade in
various coaching positions,
Hodgson has travelled between Albury, Myrtleford
and Melbourne. He coached
the Fitzroy Stars into the finals of four consecutive NFL
seasons and was a Sunbury
premiership player in 1997.
Signing on for two years,
Hodgson said he was excited to take over the role at
Bacchus Marsh and looked
forward to working with a
young and talented list of
players.
I think I am really fortunate to have picked up the
team at the stage that its
at right now. They havent
played finals for a really
long time but theres been
a steady progression in the
last three or four years and
that gap is definitely closing, he said.
Obviously the goal is pretty simple to get back into
finals and so the biggest
thing is to continue to develop the players. The majority
of the group is between 19
and 22-years-old so they are
at the stage where theyre
still learning, but I think if
we bring in a few older and
mature recruits then a natural progression will occur.
Hodgson said he hoped to
bring his past experiences
to the field, which included

a number of seasons in the

finals.
Ive been coaching for 11
years and Ive been in a really similar position before,
where a team has been just
outside of the finals but
weve been able to get in
there, he said.
There are so many young
kids in the team that have
been brought to a certain
point under Cameron. They
really progressed under his
coaching and I think its at
the stage where the next
person can come in and take
them that step further and
hopefully that person is me.
Richardson, who was the
Cobras first senior playing
coach since the early 2000s,
said whilst he enjoyed his
experience as coach, a lack of
time meant he couldnt perform to his best.
You have to be able to put
in a lot of time to be head
coach otherwise its a real
battle and unfortunately I
didnt have the right job to
put in what I wanted to, he
said.
Bacchus Marsh president
Adam Sutherland said he
was happy to have worked
with Richardson and looked
forward to the future of the
club.
We knew about half way
through the season that
[Richardson] was thinking of discontinuing his
position, which we totally
respected and it allowed us
to look for a replacement
straight away, he said.
Travis is a very experienced and highly regarded
coach. He brings a track record of lifting teams up from
the outskirts of where they
want to be and taking them
to where it is they need to
go. That is the main reason
we were attracted to him,
he said.
We couldnt be happier, he
has met all of our talented
players and we are getting a
program together already.

and Nine sides saw rematches with Buninyong and
North Ballarat respectively

being recorded as no contest results.

BDBD Chairman Ross Jones
said that the health and wellbeing of players and officials
was important in extreme
heat.
As a division we have the
responsibility to provide
a duty of care for all of our
bowlers. Jones said, The
decision to not play has been
well received by all member
clubs.

peeled off a one/one passage
to score from Dontbefoolish off a three wide trail last
lap and Lotsa Life along the
sprint lane after following
the weakening leader Ocean

One of harness racings
good guys, Long Forest
trainer Peter Thompson
was victorious in taking out
the 3rd Heat of the VHRSC
Snowball Series for C0 class
over 2190 metres at Maryborough on Thursday with
former Tasmanian 4-Y-0
Major In Art/Laconic entire
Major Jamane.
With John Caldow in the
sulky, Major Jamane was
given the run of the race
from gate five on the back
of the poleline pacemaker
Comigal and was always
travelling sweetly.
Using the sprint lane, Major
Jamane was too strong at the
finish for the heavily supported Kotare Mahdi (one/
two three wide last lap)
to prevail by 2.2 metres in
1-58.9, with Comigal holding
down third a nose away.
It was a great day for John
Caldow and wife Maree
who landed a double after
two 4-Y-0 mares Whitney H
(Changeover/Niftey Franco)
scored in the Snowball Series (2nd Heat) and Macfire
(Mach Three/Sparks Under
Fire) the Pace for C1 class,
both over 2190 metres.
Whitney H led all of the
way from the pole to account
for Carseblue which trailed

Melton trainer Ken Tippet

and future son-in-law Joshua Smyth combined to land
the Pace for C0 class over
1710 metres at Cranbourne
on Thursday with 5-Y-0 Gotta Go Cullect/Prestissimo
mare Premier Rose.
Long Forest duo Andy and
Kath Gaths Kiwi import
Three Ways was most impressive in taking the 3-Y-0
Pace over 2080 metres.
Sent forward from outside
the front line to lead, Three
Ways was able to bowl along
at his leisure, leaving his rivals standing on straightening to score by 14.1 metres
in a mile rate of 1-57.8 from
Rock Of America and Rocknroll Gold which trailed
after leading out from gate
five.
Meltons Beau Tindale employed the services of Terang
ace Jason Lee taking a concession to snare the Pace for
C1 class over 1609 metres
aboard 4-Y-0 Somebeachs omewh e r e/I nd ige nou s
gelding Lanista.
Lance Justice and Jason
Hackett combined to land
the Pace for C3 & C4 class
over 2080 metres at Cranbourne with Bushi, a 7-Y-0
gelded son of Live Or Die
and Shareta, leading most
of the way from gate three
to defeat Im Intense which

trailed after leading out

from gate six. Four Needed
finished third from midfield. The margins a neck x
1.2 metres in a rate of 2-00.7.

Bacchus Marsh duo Susan

Miles and Glenn Williams
snared the Trotters Mobile for T0 & T1 class over
1690 metres at Kilmore on
Wednesday with 8-Y-0 Kadabra/Hayley Lewis mare
Kadabra Dynasty.
Moving to be one/one at
the bell, Kadabra Dynasty
finished with a wet sail to
blouse the tearaway leader
Inittowinit by a half head
in 2-01.5, with Law Legend
third.
Charlie Attard and son
Mario were also winners on
the day when Grinfromeartoear/Illawong Lizzie colt
Tossup tipped out the heavily backed favourite Manwiththeseky in a rate of
2-00.9.
Despite racing roughly and
facing the breeze, Tossup
was too strong at the finish
for the favourite which had
every opportunity. Mygoldengrinner ran third after
trailing the pacemaker.
At Bray Raceway Ballarat
on Friday, Daylesford trainer
Bob Conroys 10-Y-0 Band Of
Gold/Red Buttons overcame
a daunting 50 metre backmark to win the Trotters
Handicap for T1 or better
class over 2200 metres.
Naturally settling at the tail
of the field with the exception
of King Croesus and Eureka
Encounter who were both
tailed off after bad beginnings, Button Brigade with
Glenn Conroy in the sulky
rattled home at 100 miles an
hour down the centre of the
track to record a nose victory
(his 15th in 160 outings) over
Desert Spur (three back the

markers) and Boundary Row

which trailed the weakening
leader Miss Noelle in a mile
rate of 2-03.7.
Toolern Vales John Justice
provided a stable double
with Loong Nien (Modern
Art/Jane McCool) in the
Pace for C4 & C5 class over
2200 metres and Hoo Nien
(Always A Virgin/Seductive) in the Pace for C1 class
over the same journey.
Loong Nien led most of the
way, while Hoo Nien peeled
off the back of Solarsonic.
Springbanks Danny Simpson was successful with 4-Y0 Modern Art/Island Beach
mare Milady Grace in the
Blue Star Concrete Pace for
R0 class over 1710 metres at
Ballarat.
