Chapter 33 Channel Description

33.1 Introduction
33.1.1 Definition
Information transfer between different layers or between peer entities on layer1 is
carried by channels. There are three types of channels defined in UTRAN:

Logical Channel: Logical channels provide data transfer between layer 2 and
higher layer. Logical channels are mapped to transport channels in MAC layer
being part of layer 2.

Transport Channel: Transport channels provide data transfer between layer 2

and layer 1. Transport channels are mapped to physical channels in layer 1.

Physical Channel: Physical channels provide data transfer on radio interface

between peers layer1 entity. The physical channels correspond to different radio
frame types and contents.

33.1.2 Purpose
The logical channel, transport channel and physical channel are described in the
chapter.

33.5.3 Logical Channel

I. Overview
The MAC layer provides data transfer services on logical channels. A set of logical
channel types is defined for different kinds of data transfer services offered by MAC.
The type of the logical channel is defined by the type of information transferred.

Generally, the logical channels are categorized as follows:

Control Channels (for the transfer of control plane information)

Traffic Channels (for the transfer of user plane information)

II. Logical Channel Priority

Logical channel priority is used to define the priority of each logical channel. It
works when more than one logical channel is mapped to one transport channel or
physical channel. Commonly, only DCCH and DTCH need logical channel priority
to be set.

III. BCCH
BCCH carries system information block (SIB). The system information elements are
broadcast in SIBs. An SIB groups together system information elements of the same
nature. Different SIBs have different characteristics, for example, their repetition rate
and the requirements on UEs to re-read the SIBs.
Table 1.1 describes the SIB content briefly and Huawei Usage.

The system information is organized as a tree. A master information block gives

references and scheduling information to a number of system information blocks in a
cell. The system information blocks contain the actual system information.
Scheduling of system information blocks is performed by the RRC layer in UTRAN.
RRC can calculate the repetition period and position of each SIB segment for every
SIB automatically based on its importance.

33.5.4 Transport Channel

The physical layer offers information transfer services to MAC and higher layers by
transport channel. Generally, the transport channels are categorized as follows:
Common transport channels (where there is a need for inband identification of

the UEs when particular UEs are addressed)

Dedicated transport channels (where the UEs are identified by the physical

channel, for example, code and frequency for FDD and code, time slot and
frequency for TDD).

To each transport channel, there is an associated Transport Format (for transport

channels with a fixed or slow changing rate) or an associated Transport Format Set
(for transport channels with fast changing rate). A Transport Format is defined as a
combination of encodings, interleaving, bit rate and mapping onto physical channels
(see 33.5.5 for details). A Transport Format Set is a set of Transport Formats. E.g., a
variable rate DCH has a Transport Format Set (one Transport Format for each rate),
whereas a fixed rate DCH has a single Transport Format.
See definitions as follows:

Transport Block: This is the basic unit exchanged between L1 and MAC, for L1
processing.

Transport Block Set: This is defined as a set of Transport Blocks, which are
exchanged between L1 and MAC at the same time instance using the same
transport channel.

Transport Format: This is defined as a format offered by L1 to MAC (and vice

versa) for the delivery of a Transport Block Set during a Transmission Time
Interval on a Transport Channel. The Transport Format constitutes of two parts
one dynamic part and one semi-static part.
Attributes of the dynamic part are:

Transport Format Combination: This is defined as an authorized combination of

the combination of currently valid Transport Formats that can be submitted
simultaneously to the layer 1 for transmission on a Coded Composite Transport
Channel of a UE.

Figure 1.1 shows an example where Transport Block Sets, at certain time instances,
are exchanged between MAC and L1 via three parallel transport channels. Each
Transport Block Set consists of a number of Transport Blocks. The Transmission Time

33.5.5 Physical Channel

Physical channels are defined by a specific carrier frequency, scrambling code,
channelization code (optional), time start & stop (giving a duration) and, on the uplink,
relative phase (0 or /2). Time durations are defined by start and stop instants,
measured in integer multiples of chips. Suitable multiples of chips also used in
specification are:

Radio frame:

A radio frame is a processing duration which consists of 15 slots.

The length of a radio frame corresponds to 38400 chips.

Slot: A slot is a duration which consists of fields containing bits. The length of a
slot corresponds to 2560 chips.

Sub-frame:A sub-frame is the basic time interval for HS-DSCH transmission and
HS-DSCH related signaling at the physical layer. The length of a sub-frame
corresponds to 3 slots (7680 chips).

Transport channels are mapped to physical channels. Within the physical layer itself
the exact mapping is from a composite coded transport channel (CCTrCH) to the data
part of a physical channel. In addition to data parts there also exist channel control
parts and physical signals.
Physical signals are entities with the same basic on-air attributes as physical
channels but do not have transport channels or indicators mapped to them. Physical
signals may be associated with physical channels in order to support the function of
physical channels, such as PRACH Preamble part.
The following physical channels are supported by Huawei:

I. Dedicated uplink Physical Channels

Dedicated uplink physical channels include uplink Dedicated Physical Data Channel
(UL DPDCH) and uplink Dedicated Physical Control Channel (UL DPCCH).
The uplink DPDCH is used to carry the DCH transport channel. There may be zero,
one, or several uplink DPDCHs on each radio link.
The uplink DPCCH is used to carry control information generated at Layer 1. The
Layer 1 control information consists of known pilot bits to support channel estimation
for

coherent

detection,

transmit

power-control

(TPC)

commands,

feedback

information (FBI), and an optional transport-format combination indicator (TFCI). The

transport-format combination indicator informs the receiver about the instantaneous
transport format combination of the transport channels mapped to the simultaneously
transmitted uplink DPDCH radio frame. There is one and only one uplink DPCCH on
each radio link.
Figure 1.1 shows the frame structure of the uplink DPDCH and the uplink DPCCH.
Each radio frame of length 10 ms is split into 15 slots, each of length T slot = 2560
chips, corresponding to one power-control period. The DPDCH and DPCCH are
always frame aligned with each other.

The parameter k in Figure 1.1 determines the number of bits per uplink DPDCH slot.
It is related to the spreading factor SF of the DPDCH as SF = 256/2 k. The DPDCH
spreading factor may range from 256 down to 4. The spreading factor of the uplink
DPCCH is always equal to 256, i.e. there are 10 bits per uplink DPCCH slot.

II. Dedicated Downlink Physical Channels

Within one downlink DPCH, dedicated data generated at Layer 2 and above, i.e. the
dedicated transport channel (DCH), is transmitted in time-multiplex with control
information generated at Layer 1 (known pilot bits, TPC commands, and an optional
TFCI). The downlink DPCH can thus be seen as a time multiplex of a downlink
DPDCH and a downlink DPCCH.
Figure 1.1 shows the frame structure of the downlink DPCH. Each frame of length 10
ms is split into 15 slots, each of length Tslot = 2560 chips, corresponding to one powercontrol period.

The parameter k in Figure 1.1 determines the total number of bits per downlink DPCH
slot. It is related to the spreading factor SF of the physical channel as SF = 512/2 k.
The spreading factor may thus range from 512 down to 4.
The exact number of bits of the different downlink DPCH fields (N pilot, NTPC, NTFCI, Ndata1
and Ndata2) corresponds to slot formats. The slot format to be uses is configured by
higher layers and can also be reconfigured by higher layers.

III. High Speed Physical Downlink Shared Channel (HS-PDSCH)

A HS-PDSCH corresponds to one channelization code of fixed spreading factor
SF=16 from the set of channelization codes reserved for HS-DSCH transmission.
Multi-code transmission is allowed, which translates to UE being assigned multiple
channelization codes in the same HS-PDSCH subframe, depending on its UE
capability.
The subframe and slot structure of HS-PDSCH are shown in Figure 1.1.

IV. High Speed Dedicated Physical Control Channel

Figure 1.1 illustrates the frame structure of the HS-DPCCH. The HS-DPCCH carries
uplink feedback signaling related to downlink HS-DSCH transmission. The HS-DSCHrelated feedback signaling consists of Hybrid-ARQ Acknowledgement (HARQ-ACK)
and Channel-Quality Indication (CQI). Each sub frame of length 2 ms (3*2560 chips)
consists of 3 slots, each of length 2560 chips. The HARQ-ACK is carried in the first
slot of the HS-DPCCH sub-frame. The CQI is carried in the second and third slot of a
HS-DPCCH sub-frame. There is at most one HS-DPCCH on each radio link. The HSDPCCH can only exist together with an uplink DPCCH.

33.5.6 Channel Mapping

I. Channel Mapping Relation
The rules for the channel mapping are:

Logical channels are mapped to transport channels

Transport channels are mapped to physical channels

The mapping between some transport channels and logical channels are not
fixed.

One transport channel can be mapped to only one physical channel.

Among all the common channels, the SCCPCH and PRACH are used for transferring
data. The recommended configurations of the two channels are as follows:

The default configuration of the SCCPCH

The cell must be configured with the PCH and the FACH. By Huawei, a cell is by
default configured with one SCCPCH. The SCCPCH bears one PCH, one FACH#0
that bears signaling, and one FACH#1 that bears service data.

If the cell is in service and the PRACH is expected to be removed when the cell
is deactivated, execute the HO CELL command to forcibly hand over UEs in this
cell to a neighboring cell. Then execute the DEA CELL command to deactivate
the cell. If there is no such requirement, skip this step and go directly to step 3.

3)

Execute the RMV PRACH command to remove one PRACH.

4)

Execute the ACT CELL command to activate the cell.

II. Removing SCCPCH
