3. List the advantages and disadvantages of the 3 Ps model.

Consider

the following:
Approach: Learning objectives & concept of language
Approach: SLA theory including individual differences
Methodology: Learner and teacher roles; other
Other

The objective of the 3 Ps model is to learn the components of the language

and it is based on the belief that language is a system.
Disadvantages of conceptualizing language from this perspective: this is a
restricted view of language, because this is just one component of
communicative competence; this is just linguistic competence, the linguistic
component, but communicative competence has other components.
According to the CEFR, communicative competence is made of three
different subcompetences:
-

Linguistic
Sociolinguistic
Pragmatics

If we just concentrate on the language system, it is likely that students

wont be able to communicate.
In terms of the theory of learning, if we think of Krashen, grammar practice
will lead to learning, but not to acquisition of the language. If we think of the
interlanguage view, we need to test hypothesis in order to make our
interlanguage advance, but this model does not have anything to do with
testing hypothesis. This is decontextualized practice.
From an interactionist view, this wouldnt be a valid teaching method
because there is no interaction. From a cognitive perspective, they say that
in order to learn a language we need to focus on form, but only after
language has been used for communication, only after meaning has been
the main target. We must promote focus on form in our lessons, but not
before focus on meaning.
In terms of methodology, students know what they have to do. In other
instructional sequences, students have to find out for themselves. It might
become boring, because it becomes predictable, but you know what it is
required from you, and it is comfortable. For the teacher, it is very easy to

prepare, to design, and it gives you a sense of authority; you seem to be in

control of the situation, since the class is quiet and working individually. It is
good for teaching large groups. That gives you a feeling of professionalism,
because you control everything. Also, it is very easy to assess. However, it
does not consider individual differences, and you may not be reaching
everyone in the class. The main disadvantage is that it is a meaningimpoverished methodology, because it only concentrates on form. Another
advantage is that it is very easy to train and to apply.
Which kind of learner is suitable for this model? Children or young learners,
who need to be told what they have to do and need to know what comes
later; they like routines.
This sequence can be altered; some people prefer to start with production,
then practice and then presentation. It is more modern, closer to taskbased.
