arker Chomerics is a local manufacturing company located in the Millville Industrial Park. For a
community service project, they have been
fundraising all year to sponsor a project they have
dubbed Build-A-Bike.
They have raised enough money in the past year to buy
bikes for Christmas for underprivileged children in our
community. Once the funds were raised, the company
bought the bikes and helmets and Parker Chomerics
employees built the bikes after work hours.
Enough money was raised to buy 20 bikes and helmets.
The bikes were turned over last week to the Cumberland
and Salem County Toys For Tots, the local Homeless
Shelter on Mays Landing Road and a few local families
who are in need.
Parker Chomerics is a division of Parker Hannifin
Corporation, which employs 33 at the Millville business
unit. They manufacture integrated display windows.
Another community service project they participated in
this year was the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer
Walk in Ocean City in October. For that, they had many
participating and were able to raise $1,441.00.

Happy Holidays
from
The Grapevine Staff

On the second anniversary of the tragic

death of Joseph Hanshaw, a homeless man
who suffocated in a clothing donation bin
while seeking refuge from the cold, non-profit
leaders gathered to announce a new partnership to end chronic homelessness in
Cumberland County by 2020.
Leaders from The M25 Initiative, Gateway
Community Action Partnership, PRAC of
Southern New Jersey, CompleteCare Health
Network, Resources for Independent Living,
and Revive South Jersey joined together two
weeks ago to sign a Memorandum of
Understanding (MOU) to begin the creation of
The Cumberland County Housing First
Collaborative (CCHFC). The mission is to work
toward the adoption of a countywide Housing
First model emphasizing partnership in providing holistic and lasting solutions for homeless
families and chronically homeless individuals.
Discussion is good and necessary, but there
comes a time to take action, said Albert B.
Kelly, CCAP, president & CEO of Gateway
Community Action Partnership. Homelessness
is not a Bridgeton problem or a Gateway

Boys & Girls Club Stands Against Bullying

From left: Major Leo Sanclemente, Salvation Army; Veronica Paige, SJFCU Deptford branch
manager; and Carmen Quiles, SJFCU Camden branch manager

Members of the Boys and Girls Club of Vineland

participated in the national organization's Take a
Stand Against Bullying Pledge. The pledge states
that members will make a commitment to stand
against bullying, treat others with respect and kindness, have the compassion not to be a bully and the
courage not to be a bystander, and to be responsible
to report bullying if they witness it.
Before taking the pledge, members were told to
crumple up the pledge and then try to smooth it
back out again, as an illustration of the irreparable
damage bullying can cause. The pledge was taken
during the Club's Power Hour/Project Learn program, which reinforces the academic enrichment of
young people during the time they spend at the
Club, and engages them in fun, but academically
beneficial activities. The program is supported by
Cumberland County Department of Human Services
and United Way.

Collecting Food and Toys

An Afternoon of Joy for Area

Children
It was an afternoon filled with song,
food and piles of freshly wrapped presents
for 24 joyful children at Cumberland
County College recently.
The annual Celebration of Lights
event is an annual favorite. With the help
of school districts from across the county,
underprivileged children were selected to
participate in the celebration, which features cultural education and holiday gifts.
College staff, faculty and students help
make this day possible by volunteering

their time and talents (as elves, Santa, and

Mrs. Claus) as well as their generosity purchasing individualized gifts. Each child
receives an outfit, a coat and two toys.

Great things are happening for a better shopping

experience now and a bright New Year.

hings are really popping on the

Avenuenot only for your lastminute holiday shopping now
but also for a bright, successful
2016. Some big things lie ahead!
Instead of the impersonality of shopping
online or coping with long lines at the
malls and shopping centers, come to downtown Vineland and let our merchants give
you a shopping experience thats personalized for you, the customer. Whether its
clothing, shoes, books, shopping for that
upcoming wedding, filling that prescription, car-care needs, enjoying foods from
many cultures, or all of the above, youll
find it in downtown Vineland. We have
longtime, established businesses and newer
ones ready to serve you.
As Vineland Downtown Improvement
District/Main Street Vinelands Business
Development Director, I want to fill you in
on a couple of exciting developments that
will have a major impact on downtowns
retail and business scene in the coming
year.
Many of you may be wondering about
Landis MarketPlace. Well, I am happy to
report that since the departure of the
Amish Market this past summer, efforts
have been ongoing to repurpose the building into something new and exciting for
our downtown. An announcement may be
just weeks away. Stay tuned!
What about the main-floor tenants, you
ask? Well, Spataros Pizza remains in the
market so youll be able to continue to
enjoy his pizza and Italian specialties.
(Try the homemade meatballs!) If, however, youve been looking for Robin Hope
Designs, A Novel IdeaChapter 2, So Get
Real, and Knitting By Marythey have a
new home right across the street at The
Spot, at 618 E. Landis Avenue.
Those of you who remember the old

Avenue will remember that The Spot is in

the location of the old I.C. Schwarzmans
department store. Just as Schwarzmans
was an iconic destination for generations
of downtown Vineland shoppers in its day,
I see The Spot as an iconic destination for
todays and tomorrows shoppers. The
Spot features boutique shops, unique
handmade goods, vintage and antiques, art
and gift ideas. The four vendors already
mentioned join a dozen other vendors
who are already open for business at The
Spot.
The watchword for todays shoppers,
especially for millennials, is experiential
shoppinggiving them an experience that
they cant get in the impersonal atmosphere of a large store or retail web site.
The Spot is designed to provide that. So,
stop in now and look for even more from
them in the New Year.
A repurposed Landis MarketPlace and
the opening of The Spot serve as great
foundations on which to continue the success of Landis Avenue. I continue to promote the benefits of opening a business
downtown and can report that several
businesses have heard of our businessfriendly environment and are currently
kicking the tires. Hopefully, Ill have
more good news to share very early next
year.
If you are a downtown shopper now,
THANK YOU and please keep up the
good work. If you havent visited Landis
Avenue in awhile, come find out for yourself what we have to offer.
Let me take this opportunity to wish
you and yours a Happy Holiday Season
and a happy, successful New Year! I

granddaughter aside and said, You did very

well, Isabel. You should be very proud.
Thank you Bishop. But, you know I
have to tell you two things. First, my name
is Anabelle not Isabel; and second, you
shouldnt feel bad about the mistake
because a lot of people make the same one.
Thats my girl!
Each of my grandchildren gets a pound
of their favorite food for the holiday as
their gift from me.
Their choices range from beef jerky to
Australian licorice, but Anabelle always
asks for York Peppermint Patties.
And she always gets them, even though
one Christmas Eve, she ate the whole bag
after everyone had gone to bed.
Now, the bag goes to her mother who
parcels them out a little more judiciously.
Thats my girl! Again.
******
We went to the Star Wars movie this
weekend. It was s a family affair with my
sons and daughters families meeting up in
Wilmington at an IMAX to see it on the
big screen.
My son was eight when the first ones
came out and for Christmas that year he
got coupons that he could redeem for Star
Wars action figures sometime in January.
It was a much simpler time and the big
brains didnt realize what a sensation the
movies would be and, of course, didnt
have all the tie-in merchandise ready for
the holidays.
When the second round of Star Wars
movies came out, my daughter came down
from college (in costume) to go to the midnight viewings with my son and me.
Its a big part of our family tradition.
I stuffed a few pieces of that fruitcake
in my pockets to snack on during the show.
Here we are four weeks removed from my
birthday and Im still snacking on one of
my best presents ever.
Thats my girl, yet again.
*****
Merry Christmas to all and have a safe
and happy New Year.
And a special thanks to the surprising
(to me) number of readers who have
approached me at holiday events to
inquire about my health.
An early November scope showed me to
be cancer-free for the first time in 2 1/2
years. Your prayers have helped.
Ill start treatment again in January. I

here are not a whole lot of good

things about getting old so Im
enjoying about the only good
thing that age does bring
grandchildren.
The other good thing about aging is food.
I dont have to always try to eat healthy
and often decide around lunchtime what I
want for dinner that evening. It used to
drive my wife crazy, but since I do the food
shopping, she goes along with it.
She also now accepts my holiday food
binges, which occur especially around
Thanksgiving and Christmas. My binges
start on my birthday (on or near
Thanksgiving) when my daughter gifts me
with a fruitcake (my favorite treat).
Each year we meet halfwaysomewhere
near the Delaware Memorial Bridgefor a
birthday breakfast celebration.
We got to the restaurant early and I saw
my daughters family pull in and went out to
meet them. The youngest granddaughter
(age 9) was beaming like the Cheshire Cat
and carrying a huge tinfoil wrapped package.
Its your present, Grandpa. I made it.
It was as big as a drum and must have
weighed eight to 10 pounds.
She really did, Dad, my daughter
explained. We found an old Scottish
recipe and she went and got the ingredients
and everything.
Now, one of the few things I like better
than food are my grandchildren.
They are all special and all have special
and unique talents.
I used to call them my seven dwarfs
because one of them was always Sleepy,
Sneezy, Grumpy, Happy, Bashful, Dopey,
or had to go to the Doc.
They have (almost) outgrown those
nicknames.
Anyway, this particular grandchild (now

American-bred figure known as Santa

Claus.
According to online sources, the first
mention of Santa occurred in a colonial
newspaper in 1773 but he was given considerable attention in Washington Irvings
1809 work History of New York, a state
originally settled by the Dutch.
Santas current visits by chimney indicate that he probably spent some time
researching the best way to deliver his gifts.
He undoubtedly learned about Saint
Nicholas method of dropping coins, but it
seems he also studied Norse mythology,
discovering that the Norse god Odin
(recently portrayed by Anthony Hopkins in
Marvels Thor films) would enter homes by
way of chimneys during the winter solstice.
The Christmas tree, too, derives from
earlier times. Sources point out that it was
during the German conversion to
Christianity that tales appeared in which
the oak tree was replaced by the evergreen,
which better symbolized the Trinity. From
there, the tree was taken into German
homes and decorated with apples and nuts.
Over time, candles were added and ultimately modern lights and Christmas balls.
In England, the Christmas tree grew in
popularity among the upper class during
Victorian times, thanks in large part to
Queen Victorias German husband, Prince
Albert. By the 1850s, Christmas trees were
commonplace among the wealthy. It wasnt
until the 1920s that all classes in Britain
shared the tree as a symbol of the holiday.
Today it serves as a gathering place for the
gifts Santa will deliver in the course of his
busiest night of the year.
Not everyone has seen Santa during his
annual visits, but some who claim to have
caught a glimpse, think they actually saw
an elf. Others, like Clement Clarke Moore,
the author of Twas the Night Before
Christmas, admit to an elf-like appearance,
but also describe him as a jolly fellow,
chubby and plump with a little round
belly, that shook, when he laughed. Its
what many Hollywood movies over the
decades seem to follow in their depiction of
Santa. And for those of us who havent seen
him, its what our collective imagination
knows is the real thing. I

VE !
SABIG

ts time once again for Santa Claus to

take to the skies with his sleigh and
reindeer for a nights worth of travel
and gift-giving around the world.
Plenty of milk and cookies will be waiting
for him in households where children are
present. It must be a tiring venture each
year, but thankfully there are no signs of
the red-suited and white-bearded gentleman slowing down. And why should he?
His ancestors never did.
Santas earliest forebear was Saint
Nicholas of Myra, a Christian bishop of the
4th century in the province of Lycia in the
Byzantine Empire. He was known for delivering gifts to the poor. Sources report that
if he found the doors locked, he would toss
coins into a window or down a chimney.
His popularity was such that his skeletal
remains were stored in Bari and Venice,
Italy where he became a patron saint to
sailors, archers and children.
The work of Saint Nicholas was so effective that the annual process of gift-giving
continued. During the Middle Ages, on
December 6, the eve of his feast day, children were given gifts in his honor. By the
time of the Reformation, the tradition was
moved to December 24 and 25 in order to
place the gift-giving into the context of
Christ rather than a saint.
After the changes during the
Reformation, the figure of Sinterklaas
enters the picture. According to online
sources, he was referred to as The
Christmas Man in the Netherlands and, like
Saint Nicholas before him, provided children with gifts in December. But
Sinterklaas did not have the luxuries of the
present-day Santa, whose team of elves
assist him each year. Instead he carried out
his annual mission with only one helper by
the name of Zwarte Piet.
In England, Father Christmas arrived in
the 16th century, bringing good cheer to
the season. Traditionally clad in red or
green fur-lined outfits, he even appeared
as the Ghost of Christmas Present in John
Leechs illustration for Charles Dickenss
1843 story A Christmas Carol. Heeding to
the new tradition of gift-giving for
Christmas, he would soon be replaced in
popularity by the British-born and

The Angel Tree at the YMCA for Second Year

At the YMCA of Vineland, The Angel Tree provided a way for people to give local children a particularly happy Christmas. Twenty-five people have
already chosen an angel from the tree in the YMCA
lobby. Each angel included a childs age and first
name; the donors provided appropriate gifts. These
included a bicycle, warm clothing, toys, and many
other items. The gifts will be wrapped at the Y and
distributed to selected children, preschoolers
through age ten. This generous initiative was begun
at the Vineland Public Library, where Alex Kaganzev
is the Project Santa coordinator. The Angel Tree
was first brought to the YMCA in 2014 in partnership with the Library.

A Visit from St. Nicholas

The Church of the Resurrection Episcopal was visited by St. Nicholas (the legendary figure derived
from Nicholas who served as bishop in Myra, in what
we know as Turkey today.) He is also known as a
friend and patron saint of seafarers.

As he distributed candy canes, he likened them to his staff. He has been known
over the years by other names in different countries the Dutch Sinterklaas, has
become our Santa Claus and our gift giving continues today.

I News in Brief
Jewish Federation Celebrates
Hanukkah
Plenty of light and warmth radiated
from the largest menorah in South Jersey
during a menorah lighting on Monday
night, December 7, in downtown Vineland
commemorating Hanukkahthe Jewish
Festival of Lights. The event was sponsored by Jewish Federation of Cumberland,
Gloucester & Salem Counties.
Over 50 people attended the celebration, which featured music, dancing, potato latkes (pancakes), and fellowship.
A little light dispels much darkness,

said Rabbi Yisroel Rapoport of Sons of

Jacob Congregation in Vineland, who was
the guiding force behind the construction
of the menorah and who has been the
guiding force behind the annual
"Hanukkah Live" outdoor menorah-lighting ceremonies in Vineland for over two
decades. "The menorahwhich we light

our lives.
The menorah lit in downtown Vineland
was constructed by Kane Steel, of
Millville, NJ, in 1994. It has been a fixture
over the years at various Vineland locations for Hanukkah and has been situated
for the past year at the site of the former
Precision Watch and Clock building on
the 600 block of Landis Avenue. The busi-

ness was owned by the late Leon

Zylberman, a Holocaust survivor.
The Federations celebration of
Hanukkah continued on Saturday night,
December 12, with a Havdalah service and
Hanukkah menorah lighting at the historic
Garton Road Shul, near Deerfield
Township, and concluded the next evening
with a celebration on the last night of the
holiday jointly sponsored by and held at
Beth Israel Congregation, in Vineland.

Two Honored by Rutgers

Extension
Cumberland County employees Cheryl
McCormick and Tammy Commander were
recognized on December 7 with awards for
excellence by Rutgers Cooperative
Extension. The awards are presented annually to one individual within the state.
Cheryl McCormick, 4-H Program
Assistant, received the Award for
Excellence for Program Assistant, while
Agricultural Secretary Tammy Commander
was recognized with the Excellence Award
for Administrative Staff.
McCormick and Commander were
applauded for achievements that have significantly
enhanced
RCE and for
demonstrating outstanding performance and creativity above
and beyond
their position
descriptions.
Each
received a certificate and congratulations
from Rutgers Cooperative Extension
Director Larry Katz, as well as a $250
award toward professional development
from Rutgers Cooperative Extension.
The recognition was well-timed as
Rutgers Cooperative Extension of
Cumberland County celebrates its 100th
year of service in the county this month.
Cheryl and Tammy were each nominated
for the awards by their colleagues in
Cumberland County.
The New Jersey Agricultural
Experiment Station is the primary unit at
Rutgers responsible for carrying out the
universitys land-grant mission and functions. It is mandated by the state to pursue
research and outreach that generate and
deliver practical science-based solutions
for the viability, health and sustainability
of industries and communities related to
agriculture, the environment, natural
resources, food, and human and community development. It is the home of Rutgers
Cooperative Extension.

(Continued from cover)

munities, said Ralph Padilla, executive

director of PRAC of Southern New Jersey.
Each organization has their own niche and
this model brings us together to utilize our
resources and abilities in making a substantial reduction in the homeless population.
Our social service model for the homeless is
out of date and out of touch with the realities facing our community. This is a step in
the right direction to make things a little
easier for those who are already in crisis.
Homelessness is a public health crisis,
said J. Curtis Edwards, president and CEO of
CompleteCare Health Network. What
would be a simple health problem to remedy
under normal circumstances becomes complex and costly for the homeless who cannot
pay for the help. By providing housing for

the chronically homeless, we can begin to

reduce the overwhelming cost to the healthcare system, while improving the quality of
life for these individuals and families.
This is not about duplicating or even
creating new services, but realigning our
existing programs throughout the county
to be in line with Housing First principles, said Lisa Killion-Smith, executive
director of Resources for Independent
Living. This collaborative will be linking
the existing programs among various entities and coupling them with new funding
streams to create a model that will not
holistically address the issues related to
chronic homelessness.

problem, it is a community problem that

requires a coordinated community response.
Housing First is a policy that seeks to
rapidly place chronically homeless individuals directly into permanent housing.
Stabilizing the homeless population by first
providing a permanent residence is the
foundation of this initiative. Rather than
move from service to service or agency to
agency, this new model allows clients to
receive support services directly at their
residence (e.g. apartment, home).
As of the 2015 Point in Time Survey,
Cumberland County has over 200 homeless
individuals. According to Monarch
Housing, the total number of homeless in
Cumberland County has increased 107 percent since 2011.
According to HUD Secretary Shaun
Donovan, a chronically homeless person can
cost taxpayers up to $40,000 per year in
services such as hospitals, ambulances, jails,
and mental healthcare. The Housing First
program has been praised for saving taxpayers upwards of $10-$12,000 per year per
client, all while assisting the most vulnerable and costliest of the homeless population.
The Federal Department of Housing and
Urban Development (HUD) has defined
chronic homelessness as an individual or
family with a disabling condition who has
been continuously homeless for a year or
more or has had at least four episodes of
homelessness in the past three years. As of
the 2015 Point In Time Survey,
Cumberland County has 53 persons who
are chronically homeless.
We simply cannot continue as business
as usual in Cumberland County as the evidence clearly demonstrates that we are failing in addressing the problem of homelessness in our region, said Dr. Rob Weinstein,
President of The M25 Initiative & Chair of
the Cumberland County Code Blue
Coalition. With limited government
resources and a fragmented social service
system, we are not making progress against
the tide of homelessness. However, the
Housing First model that is being utilized
throughout the nation, and in a limited
manner in the county, has a proven track
record of reducing homelessness and saving taxpayers money.
The CCHFC has emerged from discussions that have taken place since the spring
between government, hospital, non-profit,
and community leaders on how to implement a much larger Housing First model in
Cumberland County.
The conceptual model of the CCHFC
comprises of Gateway Community Action
Partnership as the lead agency for funding
applications and coordination. PRAC of
Southern New Jersey would be charged
with leading the housing component,
CompleteCare with health, and Resources
for Independent Living for comprehensive
case management. Additionally, The M25

Initiative and Revive South Jersey are

charged with working with the faith-based
communities to provide support for thosetransitioning from homelessness into the
mainstream society. The lead agencies
would work with other partners in the
County in providing the necessary services.
The CCHFC is contracting the services
of Monarch Housing for the next 12 months
to develop the Housing First model that will
work for Cumberland County, seek program
funding, and provide project oversight. The
goal is to have the program functional within 12 months. The funding for the project is
made possible through each of the partner
agencies, as well as Inspira Health Network.
The bottom line is that Housing First
saves lives, saves money, and improves com-

Fishing for
Wisdom
to be found only in places of solitude and
wildnessand a recently released book.

many of the stories were familiar. The book is a

compilation of
assigned and
freelance articles Bill has
written over the
years for hunting and fishing
publications as
well as the
Washington Post
and in-flight magazines.
But the book is more than a re-telling of
outdoor adventures. Each chapter and
every story include delightful gems of wisdom about lifes journey. Stories about his
last two children being born, about a
Marriage Encounter he and his wife experienced and subsequently led for other couples. Some major recurring themes are conserving spaces and natural resources for
our children and grandkids to enjoy as we
do, having our kids experience the outdoors so that they will know the source of
the food they eat, teaching the next generation to hunt so that they will learn the
responsible way to hold (and use) a gun as
well as respect for the animal killed.
Not every word is Bills ownhe
recounts wise words he has heard from
friends and colleagues, and quips and
quotes he has collectedbut its a happy
compilation of these and realizations he
has come to as he finds peace and Gods
will for his life out in the wildness and on
the natural lands of this continent.
For me, reading Bills book has been a
joy, like a Christmas present to myself, but
also a reminder of time-honored conservation ethics and important life lessons that
many of usand we, as a societyare in
danger of losing. I

n the last few months, two good

friends have released books that they
have spent several years writing and
getting to print. Actually, both
authors have spent their entire lives working toward this wonderful event. My friend
Kate even mentioned something about it
being her swan song; I kinda doubt it.
But Ill start with Bill Rooney. He grew
up in northern New Jersey and when he
was five years old, his dad took him fishing.
He was instantly hooked, as the passion of
a lifetime was born in him. Bill went on to
work at the editorial offices of Outdoor Life,
ironically in New York City, and later
moved his life and family to northern
Virginia, where he commuted to his job as
editor of American Forests in another metropolitan area, Washington, DC.
That is where our paths crossed. When
I graduated from college with a degree in
forestry, I wanted to find a job that would
combine that science with my passion for
writing. Looking back, I laugh because that
seems really specific, but I had already
worked with the editor of New Jersey
Outdoors and on various Fish, Game &
Wildlife publications. I sent my resume to
this Bill Rooney at American Forests in
Washington, DC and before long, I was
under his excellent tutelage.
I spent more than six years at this, my
dream job, being mentored by this kind,
down-to-earth professional who taught me
the nuts and bolts of editing and publishingand a few things about life, too. He
said hed hire an English major over a journalism student anyday, so I guess I really
threw him for a loop as a woman with neither of these. My degree certainly fit in
with the scope of American Forests magazine, but at my interview, we talked more
about my job and adventures with the N.J.
Division of Fish, Game, & Wildlife.
During those six-plus years working in
the nations capital, I also got to hear about
some of Bills fishing and hunting trips. As I
recall, in my first few weeks on the job, he
was jetting off somewhere, and he never
went anywhere without his fishing rod and
gear. Even a family trip to Disney included
tangential fishing excursions for himself
and the Rooney clan.
