ABSTRACT
This topic presents the use of waste plastic in hot bituminous
mixes to enhance pavement performance, protect environment and provide low cos
t roads. Waste plastic modified bitumen (WPMB) has been prepared by adding mixed
plastic waste (5%) in shredded form of suitable cross-linking agent in 80/100 b
itumen and blended for 1hr at 160°C. Physical properties of WPBM are found with
in the specified limits as per IS: 1546-2004. Road constructed using WPMB posses
s better binding property, higher Softening point, high temp resistance, lower p
enetration value, water resistance properties, higher Marshal Stabilityâ increased
strength of road, low cost, better disposal of waste plastics etc. During last d
ecades the properties required for road pavements have become more and more dema
nding, due to the increasing no of vehicles and loads on them. Hence modificatio
n of natural bitumen with polythene and ethylene vinyl acetate EVA copolymer con
stitutes a route to overcome the new technical demands.

Key words:- WPBM, shredded plastic, blend, bitumen, polythene.
