The all new Civic has arrived.

A wind-cutting body. A new generation i-VTEC engine that increases horsepower to 140 and still goes easy on fuel. A two-tier
instrument panel that helps keep your eyes on the road. A well-crafted interior. And the most standard safety features
in its class. The 2006 Civic has more of everything. More style. More performance. More fun. Its time to get more Civic.

December 2005

RETURN OF THE KING

ave you seen the original King Kong?

No honestly. Have you seen the
original King Kong?
A quick, entirely unscientific, survey
around the Famous offices shows that,
although theyre reluctant to admit it, most
people under the age of 40 have never seen
the 1933 version of King Kong. Despite its
classic status, and that it starred Canadian
Fay Wray, its one of those movies that
represents an embarrassing blank spot
in many movie lovers filmographies.
I would like to go on the record to say
that, I, Marni Weisz, editor of a national movie magazine, have
never seen King Kong. I thought I had, but then I realized I was
confusing it with 1949s Mighty Joe Young, another movie about a
gorilla brought from Africa to the States by a Hollywood promoter
looking to make a buck. Just like Kong, an exploited Mighty Joe
breaks loose and wreaks havoc. So you can understand my error.
Its for exactly this reason that Peter Jacksons new remake of
King Kong isnt such a bad idea. At a time when so many questions
begin, Why on Earth are they remaking this redo actually makes
some sense. In Finding her Wray, page 40, NAOMI WATTS talks
about the delights and challenges of taking over Fay Wrays role as
the object of the big apes animal desires.
You may be surprised to see CHARLIZE THERON in this months
slick sci-fi action pic Aeon Flux. After all, hasnt the leggy
South African gotten all serious on us? There was her Oscarwinning turn as serial killer Aileen Wuornos in Monster, then her
wrenching performance as a sexually harassed miner in Octobers
true-ish North Country. So whats up?
Truth is she signed on to do Aeon Flux before shed even won
the Oscar, not that she would have changed her mind. In
Charlize Therons Backbreaking Role, page 34, she says it was
the chance to work with director Karyn Kusama, whose only other
movie was the popular 2000 indie Girlfight, that attracted her to the
film. Oh, and the backbreaking part of it? Theron was almost
paralyzed after an accident on set.
Speaking of backbreaking, JAKE GYLLENHAAL stars in the new
Ang Lee western Brokeback Mountain. But this is no typical western
you know, heroic ranchers taking on greedy landowners and all
that. This ones about a topic most dont immediately associate with
the genre gay love.
The winner of the Golden Lion for Best Picture at the Venice
International Film Festival, by all accounts Brokeback Mountain is a
tender, heartbreaking story well worth seeing. In
Playing Cowboys, page 30, Gyllenhaal tries to
convince us that the fact its Heath Ledger hes
kissing is no big deal.
And with the holidays within spitting distance
we wouldnt think of leaving you without
some last-minute gift ideas. Check out our
HOLIDAY GIFT GUIDE on page 20, and have a
wonderful festive season.

TOM GREEN, GIFTED RAPPER

Hes survived a cable access show, testicular cancer and harrowing Freddy Got Fingered
reviews. If theres one thing Tom Greens learned its that you shouldnt worry about stuff you
cant control and should focus on having fun, which explains why the Canadian comedian is
returning to his first love: rap music.
Greens debut rap CD, Prepare for Impact (in stores December 6th), is a throwback to
Greens early years in Ottawa where he was a teenage rap sensation.
I started playing a lot of shows around Ottawa and got a record deal, says Green on the
line from a Toronto studio where hes busy editing a top-secret new movie he wrote and
directed (due out next year).
I got the record deal right before I got cancer and ended up not being able to complete
that record, remembers Green, and during that process I built a whole recording studio, but
had to put the breaks on my music when I got sick.
Prepare for Impact sounds exactly how one would expect a
Tom Green rap album to sound. Songs such as My Bum is on Ya
Lips, Im an Idiot and I Like Hooters capture Greens goofball,
bodily functions-obsessed charm. The surprise is discovering that
Green can really rhyme.
Green kicks off a cross-Canada Keepin It Real Crew tour this
January, and dont be surprised if you see some real live Hooters
gals on stage with the rapper.
When we roll into each town well usually eat lunch at the
Hooters and basically ask the waitress if theyd like to dance on
stage, and they usually want to. Its not like were travelling with
them or anythingI wish. IR

JAKE GYLLENHAAL

PLAYING COWBOYS
JAKE GYLLENHAAL and Heath Ledger fall for each other in Ang Lees award-winning BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN.
Here Gyllenhaal opens up about playing gay I BY MATHIEU CHANTELOIS

famous 30 | december 2005

hen he was a young boy, Jake Gyllenhaal dreamed of

being a firefighter. I was so wrong, he says, thinking
back. It was my friends who wanted to be cowboys
that had it right. There is nothing cooler than being a cowboy.
And if the hat fits Gyllenhaal does look ruggedly
handsome with a wide Stetson sitting atop his head in his first
western, Brokeback Mountain a movie that has, since its
world premiere this summer, been receiving nothing but
praise for its sensitive script and breathtaking beauty.
A day after the films North American premiere at the
Toronto International Film Festival, Gyllenhaal is clearly
jubilant about the response the film has garnered so far. His
smile is white and wide, his blinking eyes gigantic and blue.
He has already read a couple of reviews this morning
everywhere there is praise for the raw direction of filmmaker
Ang Lee (The Ice Storm, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon), and
for Gyllenhaal. This same weekend the Venice International
Film Festival handed Brokeback Mountain the Golden Lion for
Best Film, the festivals highest honour.
An actor best-known for soulful portrayals of misunderstood, sensitive young men (October Sky, Moonlight Mile,
The Good Girl), this film gives the 24-year-old a chance to give
one of his most mature performances yet.
This is my first gay character and the most masculine
portrayal I have undertaken on screen. It marks a turning
point in my career, the actor says, then pauses for a couple
of seconds and adds, but I cant stop to think about that
because it goes against the nature of my work.
Adapted from a short story by American author Annie Proulx
that was first published in a 1997 issue of The New Yorker,
Brokeback Mountain tells of the forbidden love affair between
Jack Twist (Gyllenhaal) and Ennis del Mar (Heath Ledger),
two cowboys hired to tend sheep on a Wyoming mountain
one summer in the 1960s. Hostile toward each other at first,
the two develop a deep bond
Heath Ledger (left) and Gyllenhaal
and quickly become friends,
then lovers.
At the end of the summer
the two part ways and return
to their normal lives. But
four years, two marriages and
several children later, they
find themselves face to face
again, and realize their feelings havent been dulled by
the passage of time.
It is a film about the erosion of time that reminds us
that we need to do what we want to do in life. We need to
fight for what we believe in, explains Gyllenhaal.
Speaking of fighting for what one believes in, it took more
Jake Gyllenhaal as than six years for producer James Schamus to find the
cowboy Jack Twist
funding for this project. Joel Schumacher flirted with it.

interview |

JAKE GYLLENHAAL

Gus Van Sant tried to make it.

Gyllenhaal remembers meeting with Van Sant, whose work
he admired, for the role. I remember saying No way, he
says, laughing at himself. All I heard was that they wanted to
make a gay cowboy movie. I was 16! I could not imagine
myself acting in a film like that.
Six years later, one of Gyllenhaals agents passed him the
script with Ang Lees name attached.
I really wanted to shoot this story once I saw that Ang Lee
was associated with the project, says Gyllenhaal. I have an
unconditional respect for his work. But my desire to do the
film went farther than that. It is so difficult to find truly
beautiful love stories out there today. Almost everything has
already been done. In the United States, we do hundreds of
dramas and romantic comedies a year. Most of them are
almost always full of pretense and clichs.

And Gyllenhaal knows Hollywood. Born in Los Angeles, he

grew up in the industry. His father, Stephen Gyllenhaal, is a
director, and his mother, Naomi Foner, is a screenwriter. His
sister, Maggie, has also made a name for herself as an actor
with memorable roles in films like Secretary, Mona Lisa Smile
and Happy Endings.
Films have greatly influenced my life. Even my love life!
Of course the characters on screen are all fictional, but for
years I tried to recreate the relationships I saw on screen. I
can even remember using dialogue from films to try and
impress my girlfriends. And, you know what? It never worked!
Brokeback Mountains message is full of meaning. It reminds
you that love is rare and when we find it we need to hang on,
by hook or by crook, imparts Gyllenhaal, who turns 25 on
the 19th of this month.
The guy who has locked lips on screen with Gwyneth Paltrow

SURELY

THE FUNNIEST MOVIE

YOUVE EVER SEEN!

and Jennifer Aniston doesnt consider his numerous and

steamy kisses with Heath Ledger to be a big deal. It was the
first time I kissed a guy, he says. People all want to hear the
juicy details about what it was like. But there arent any.
Whats the big deal? The majority of my straight male friends
have also kissed other men. I think all men go through a
phase where they find themselves attracted to a member of
the same sex. It is the same thing with women but they talk
about it more easily. This taboo that men have about
discussing their sexuality really fascinates me.
Making even more of an impression on Gyllenhaal were his
first time on the back of a horse (totally cool, dude) and the
mountainous terrain of Calgary, where the film was shot
(cold, but extremely beautiful).
It is difficult to associate Canada with anything other than
winter, he says, making reference to both Brokeback Mountain
and the blockbuster The Day After Tomorrow he filmed in
Montreal over two cold months in the winter of 2002/2003.
We filmed [The Day After Tomorrow] during the harshest
months of the winter. I didnt see much [of the city], everything was wrapped up in an immense mountain of snow. But
the people were great. The technical team were really
patient. You must be a very calm and courageous people to
live through these winters. I think patience is one of the great
virtues of Canadians.

CHARLIZE THERONS BACKBREAKING ROLE

ears from now, when Charlize Theron is flipping

through the channels and comes across a late-night
showing of Aeon Flux, before she even has a chance to
judge her old performance, gawk at that funky hairdo or
marvel at the painterly cinematography, odds are shell get a
twinge in her back.
Her injury, God willing, will be completely healed by then,
but a herniated disc between your third and fourth vertebrae
especially when its the result of a sudden and dramatic
accident is just the sort of thing your body never forgets.
Maybe it was the fact that Theron trained as a ballet dancer
in her native South Africa that made her think she could really
push it with the stunts, or maybe it was just her compulsion
to throw herself into her characters we all remember how
the model-turned-actor transformed for Monster, winning an
Oscar in the process.

Theron puts it more simply: Im usually doing romances

or dramas, so I dont have very many action scenes to film. So
when Im doing a film that offers me a lot of stunts, I train for
the stunts that I feel confident I can do which luckily end
up being most of them and leave the questionable and
maybe overly technical ones to the pros.
In retrospect, the stunt in question may have been one that
should have been left for the pros production of the
big-budget thriller had to be shut down for a long six weeks
while the 30-year-old actor healed.
Aeon Flux takes place 400 years in the future, just under 400
years after industrial disease wipes out most of the worlds
population. A walled, Utopian society called Bregna represents
the majority of the remaining civilization, but there is an
underground society called Monica, comprised of those who
know the tranquility in Bregna is only surface-deep.

In Flux: Charlize Theron gets physical as assassin Aeon Flux

famous 34 | december 2005

Youd never know it from looking at CHARLIZE THERON today, but an accident on the set of AEON FLUX
could very easily have left her in a wheelchair. Here she talks about the injury and the physical
demands of the role I BY EARL DITTMAN

interview | CHARLIZE THERON

Theron plays the title hero, a gymnastic secret agent sent

by The Handler (Frances McDormand, who also starred with
Theron in Octobers moving drama North Country) to assassinate a government leader in Bregna. Based on the animated
series that ran on MTV, the films look and feel falls somewhere
between live action, animation and a slick videogame. And
its the first film from director Karyn Kusama since her
debut, Girlfight, caused a stir back in 2000.
Literally hours before she was whisked off to the Emmy
Awards in Los Angeles this past September, Charlize Theron
squeezed in a few interviews with the press, including
this one.

What did you actually do to cause this kind of damage to your back?
I did a back handspring, my feet slipped from underneath
me, and I landed on my neck with my body straight. I was on
a wire but the thing is, I was really learning gymnastics and
you only get speed from not really using the wire that much.
The wire was just guiding me, the wire wasnt lifting.
Was it tough to stop for six weeks in the middle of filming?
Not only did I have the time and luxury to get to know my
character of Aeon much better, and understand what
compelled her to almost single-handedly lead this rebellion
against the bad guys, but I got to know her as a feeling, loving

It was an accident. Accidents happen and you

woman. Before Aeon Flux, I hadnt been able to spend much
time with my mom [Gerda], my wonderful boyfriend [actor
Stuart Townsend, star of TVs updated Night Stalker series] and
my animals. That time off gave me a chance to get my head
together, because I had literally spent just days between
reporting to films sets. After Monster, it was Head in the Clouds,
then North Country and finally Aeon Flux. Honestly, I think
Aeon Flux will benefit from my time off.

Are you completely healed?

Yeah, I go for one more check up. The reason why we had to
shut down was just because if I had any other smaller
accident, like a car accident or if I slipped and fell or anything
like that, it was really very close. If [the disc] had moved any
more it would have compressed on my spinal cord. Thats
paralyzed. The nerve damage was really what was problematic
because I lost all feeling in the right side of my body.
Did you know you were in trouble when you landed?
No, because I had been in so much pain in this movie
[laughs]. I thought it was just maybe a spasm. I got up and said,
No, Im fine, I think maybe I just pulled it a little bit. Its just
spasming a little bit. I lay down for a second, started to stretch
a little bit, and within 20 minutes the pain got so intense that
we went to the hospital and did a CAT scan and found out.
Did you vow that you would never do another action movie?
No, it was an accident. Accidents happen and you have got
to get over that fear. I wouldnt have wanted to make that
film if I couldnt. The physical aspect is what I was so
interested in. I come from a background of telling stories
with my body and I really thought that this was a great
throwback to that.
Does a part of you stay in character the entire time youre working on
a movie?
No, I dont like bringing my work home because it makes my
work not as effective, I think. I need the energy, I need to be
able to switch off and rest.

So you can walk off that set and that energy, that character, disappears?
I really believe that every actor can do it, its discipline.
Does that come from your dance background?
Maybe. But also just because I love my life. I really love my
life just as much as I love my work and I dont want the two
to override each other.
You and Stuart Townsend have been a couple for quite a while, how do
you keep it going with your crazy lives?
Weve been together almost five years now. I think the most
important thing is not what the persons occupation is, but
just the personalities. Its the two personalities that have to
live together, and he challenges me and keeps me on my
toes. Hes a fire sign, Im a fire sign. What I like to call a
Saggi-terrorist [laughs].
After winning the Oscar, did you become more selective about roles?
No. I took North Country a week before I won the Oscar. I
would be stupid to say that it wasnt because of the noise, Im
sure it had a lot to do with that too, but it was before I actually
won the Oscar. When I won the award I never even entertained
any other offers, I never read any other scripts. I havent read
a script since Aeon Flux and then North Country in the last two
years since I won it.
The Aeon Flux announcement was just shortly after you won the Oscar.
But I had said yes, then they go and do all the paperwork and
all of that stuff. I had completely committed myself to the two
projects of Aeon Flux and North Country because of directors
Karyn Kusama and because of Niki Caro [North Countrys director, whod previously made a splash with Whale Rider]. Those
are two filmmakers that I really wanted to work with, they felt
like two projects that were day and night from each other.

Martin Csokas looks to

Theron to save the day

Whats next for you?

Nothing, Im going to go live life. Its time to go live life. Im
doing a five-episode character on Arrested Development. I really
didnt think I would go back to acting for the rest of this year,
then they called and I said, Oh God, I love the show. Id love
to go do some comedy. Im producing a couple of things
that dont take me away from home. Stuarts working nights,
so I can work a little bit during the day.

FINDING HER WRAY

There are few roles more iconic than Fay Wrays
screaming Ann Darrow in KING KONG. Will
NAOMI WATTS be able to make it her own in
Peter Jackosns redo? I BY RON DICKER

fter Alberta farm girl Fay Wray caught the eye of a giant
ape in the 1933 classic King Kong, she said she didnt
realize that King Kong and I were going to be together
for the rest of our lives, and longer.
Naomi Watts discovers this month whether she and the
supersized simian can form an eternal bond as she reprises
Wrays Ann Darrow in the new King Kong.
It is an event movie of the highest order, combining an
Oscar-winning director, Peter Jackson (The Lord of the Rings)
fulfilling his greatest ambition, and cinemas greatest beauty
and the beast story.
No pressure, right?
I try not to pay attention to it, says Watts, surrounded
by the snowy mountains of Park City, Utah, during the
Sundance Film Festival. On a break from shooting Kong in
Wellington, New Zealand, Watts is here to hype the comedy
Ellie Parker, about a wannabe actor struggling to maintain her
dignity. I show up on the day, give it my all. The minute you
start thinking about what people are going think of you and

how theyll react, its death.

At the same time, Watts hopes that, while this might be the
defining role of her career, it will not define her. I wont be
this part forever, she insists.
Right, like we forget that Judy Garland ever wore ruby
slippers.
But this compelling actor today she looks dazzling in a
sweater and boots, blond and Noxzema radiant cant really
complain. Not long ago her fears werent about being
typecast; they were about not being cast at all.
I remember spending a lot of time in my car, she says.
While I was driving along Mulholland Drive, Id think,
Maybe Ill take a right there and drive myself off the cliff. I
cant take it.
She laughs at the irony. Mulholland Drive is also the name
of the 2001 David Lynch mindbender that launched her
career in North America.
The England-born and Australia-raised 37-year-old became a
soap star Down Under then followed Nicole Kidman to
Los Angeles and watched her blossom into an international
sensation and a target. Watts had no idea that she, too, would
become a victim of Australias tall poppy syndrome, the natives
term for the collective urge to chop down those who rise above.
We have a tabloid cancer in Australia and its very toxic,
she says.
A now-defunct relationship with fellow Australian actor
Heath Ledger, 10 years her junior, created quite a stir, and

Its not you, its me: Watts relates

to her oversized love interest
famous 42 | december 2005

Watts is at the point where anything she does, any movie

she chooses, grabs attention. Kong, of course, has upped
the ante.
With success, stakes get higher and higher, she says. It
doesnt matter what your dream is in life. You cant really go,
Now Im done.
Her credibility as an actor was sealed with an Oscarnominated turn as a grief-worn mother in 21 Grams (2003),
shes made two hit horror films, The Ring (2002) and its
2005 sequel, and last year she starred in three thinky critics
faves, I Heart Huckabees, The Assassination of Richard Nixon and
We Dont Live Here Anymore.
But Watts, a Hollywood bridesmaid so many times before
she became the bride of Kong, still vividly remembers a time
when validation, from the public and her peers, seemed
unattainable.
I tried to think of something else I could do but theres
nothing I loved as much as this acting, she says. She hung in
there long enough to get the call that would jolt any movie
star. While Jackson was putting the final touches on his third
Lord of the Rings film, he called Watts to see if she was interested
in being Ann Darrow. They had dinner in London.
We spoke about the project, but mostly we just talked,
Watts recalls.
Dessert came later, when Jackson informed her that she
had won the role. Although Watts had never before worked
on an action adventure, she insists she adores them if they
are done properly.

WETA GOES APE

When it comes to using cutting-edge technology to make and promote
his films, theres no one better than King Kong director Peter Jackson.
Like George Lucas before him, New Zealand native Jackson helped
launch a design workshop and digital effects house to serve his
filmmaking needs. WETA established in the Wellington suburb
of Miramar in1995 and named after an antennaed bug native to
New Zealand is best known for producing the costumes, creatures,
miniatures and the thousands of digital shots used in the Lord of the
Rings trilogy and this months The Chronicles of Narnia.
With King Kong, WETAs staff faced the daunting task of
creating a huge ape who had to be able to act. They turned to actor
Andy Serkis and motion-capture technology to pull it off. Serkis,
who had been down this road before playing LotRs computergenerated Gollum, was plastered with sensors that recorded his
muscle movements. Concentrated mostly on his face, the sensors
provided the road map WETAs digital artists needed to create an
ape who could look perplexed, happy and, of course, really,
really mad.
Check out the stellar website KongisKing.net, and specifically the
series of production diaries, to see the motion-capture technology
at work. The diaries offer a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at
the complex and often mind-bending technology used to recast Kong
as a 21st-century ape. IR

King Kong did not adore Watts, however. She was bruised
and emotionally spent, particularly from the well-known
scene in which the Skull Island natives offer her up to their
hairy tormentor. But Watts says the spirit of the moment
carried her through any physical discomfort. She and Jackson
had even asked the cast to tone down their aggression, but
realized the immediacy fizzled once they did.
The rubber-limbed Andy Serkis, who stood in as the slithery
Gollum before he was digitalized in the Lord of the Rings trilogy,
performed similar duties as the stand-in for Kong.
The plot is basically the same as in the 1933 version, with a
few tweaks. A filmmaking crew with a bully of a director
(Jack Black instead of the vaudeville blowhard played by
Robert Armstrong), a beautiful actress (Watts instead of
Wray) and a screenwriter (Adrien Brody instead of the
explorer played by Bruce Cabot) arrive at Skull Island to
investigate the Kong legend, but find themselves terrorized
by the real deal. The natives kidnap Ann as altar candy for
Kong, and the crew embarks on a rescue mission.
The team eventually bags the creature, crates him, and
brings him to New York to be the ultimate freak show. Kong
goes bananas, of course, and the Empire State Building
becomes his tree house away from home. He cradles Ann and
swats fighter airplanes like mosquitoes in what is perhaps
cinemas most memorable finale.
As an homage to the original, Watts wears a hat similar to
one worn by Wray. It is an iconic movie and an iconic role,
Watts says. Those are very big shoes to fill.
But not so big as to dissuade Watts from taking one more stab
at Hollywood Royalty. Next year shell appear in another role
originally played by a seemingly incomparable icon Greta
Garbos part as an adulteress in a remake of The Painted Veil.
Despite the success, Watts says she remains her worst critic
although a bad audition is not likely to give her that splitsecond urge to take the short route down Mulholland Drive.
I do have a little bit more confidence that it wont go away
tomorrow, she says.

OPRAH WINFREY

Everyone wants rich, creamy comfort foods at Christmas. This one

not only tastes great but it has those great aromas of holiday baking.
[Chef] Rosie Daley taught me to bake, rather than boil, the sweet
potatoes for the filling, which produces a more intense flavour.

SWEET POTATO PIE (serves 12)

Ingredients for crust:

light vegetable cooking spray

2 cups graham cracker crumbs
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1 large egg white

Ingredients for filling:

4 baked medium sweet potatoes (prick the surface of
each potato 4 times with the tines of a fork and bake
for 1 hour at 350 degrees F)
6 large egg whites
1/4 teaspoon each: ground nutmeg, ground cloves,
ground allspice, ground ginger
2 tablespoons pure vanilla extract
5 tablespoons pure maple syrup
1 tablespoon honey
6 ounces light cream cheese
1/4 cup freshly squeezed orange juice

Method:

Preheat oven to 350 F. 2. Spray a 10-round pie pan 3 times with vegetable oil
to coat. 3. Put all the remaining ingredients for the crust in the bowl of a food
processor. Pulse 5 times. 4. Transfer the mixture to the prepared pan and press
down firmly, spreading the crumb crust until it covers the bottom evenly.
5. Peel sweet potatoes and place in large mixing bowl. Mash them with a fork.
6. Transfer potatoes to blender and add all the remaining filling ingredients.
Whip until mixture is smooth and frothy, scraping down the sides as necessary
so that all the ingredients are blended. 7. Pour filling into crust. 8. Bake 30 to
45 minutes, until centre of the pie is firm and not sticky to the touch. 9. Transfer
pan to rack and allow pie to cool 30 minutes. 10. Refrigerate for 1 hour. I like
to garnish each serving with a dollop of real or mock whipped cream and a
sprinkle of ground nutmeg or cinnamon.

PIERCE BROSNAN

Being from Ireland, I remember with fondness the Christmas Goose.

ROAST CHRISTMAS GOOSE (serves 10 to 15)

Ingredients:

1 10- to 14-pound young goose

6 sprigs of rosemary
6 sprigs of thyme
2 apples, cut into quarters
2 oranges, cut into quarters
2 onions, peeled and cut into quarters
salt and pepper to taste

Method:

Preheat oven to 375 F. 2. Sprinkle the goose with salt and

pepper, both inside and out. 3. Remove any additional fat
and discard. Prick the skin and allow the fat beneath to run
out as it cooks. Place the rosemary and thyme in the cavity.
4. Place the goose, breast-side down, in a deep roasting
pan. Arrange the apples, oranges and onions around the
goose in the pan. 5. Pour in enough water to come halfway
up the sides of the goose. 6. Roast for 2 to 2.5 hours. Pour
off fat from time to time, adding more water if necessary,
stirring it into the pan juices. 7. Turn the goose breast-side
up and roast for another 1.5 to 2 hours, or until completely
cooked. (Insert meat thermometer in thick inner thigh.)
8. Pour off the fat and add more water, as necessary, stirring
it into the pan juices. 9. Transfer goose to a large serving
platter and keep it warm. 10. Remove remaining fat from
sauce and strain sauce, seasoning it with salt and pepper.
11. Serve goose with sauce. Dont try to slice more than the
breast and thigh meat at the table; goose is so rich that
smaller portions are fine.

Over the past year Famous style columns have bowed

at the well-shod feet of international trendsetters like
Mouret, Balenciaga, Chloe, Armani and Lang.
But wed be remiss if we let the year draw to a close
without paying attention to some of the great talent
we have at home. Here are five of our faves

I By Mathieu Chantelois, Jean-Francois Lgar and milie Villeneuve

ANDY TH-ANH

The three letters comprising designer Andy Th-Ahns label,

P.O.W., stand for Power of Women, but also form an onomatopoeia
that fits. The Quebecers collections, which explode with shape
and colour, have been delighting Montreal fashionistas for five
years now. We remember his summer 2004 line with an almost
childlike nostalgia, those satin skirts in electric reds and blues!
This fall, Th-Ahn presents a line thats as much military as
romantic, as if lifted from 19th-century Russia. Shades of black
and violet set off luminous lilacs, while printed silk ribbons hug
waistlines. The Vietnamese-born designer renounces the concept of
a single look, opting instead for an amalgam of structured pieces,
starched fabrics and light, floral-print chiffons, proving that
opposites do attract. V

ARTHUR
MONDONA

In the kingdom of designers,

there is a King Arthur. Not yet
30 years old, hes already been
lauded on the runways of
Los Angeles, Sao Paolo and
Montreal. And everywhere,
nothing but accolades for this
designer who was still a fashion
student at Torontos Ryerson
University just three years ago.
But once ultra-chic Wallpaper*
magazine gushed over Mendona,
it wasnt long before the rest of
the fashion media followed suit:
A rising star, trumpeted British
Vogue. The next Alfred Sung,
proclaimed Toronto Life. The
designer to watch, announced
Elle Canada. His collections
seduce with modernity and
sensuality, his fabrics are
sumptuous, his lines striking,
and his fits masterly. MC

PHILIPPE
DUBUC

The designer who began his career

12 years ago as the Montreal
hipsters best kept secret has now
expanded into markets from
New York to Tokyo. In 2003, his
line of skirts for men snagged
Dubuc an invitation the only one
bestowed upon a Canadian to
show at the prestigious London
exhibition Men in Skirts alongside the likes of Jean-Paul Gaultier.
Hes also among the precious few
Canadians who have shown their
collections in Paris. Upon his most
recent journey to the city of lights,
French Vogue proclaimed Dubuc a
designer to watch. This winter
he follows in the footsteps of
Dior Homme with a punk rockinspired collection featuring
silhouettes reminiscent of London
in the early 80s. Dark colours
(black, charcoal) and robust fabrics
(wool, mesh, jersey) are elegantly
crumpled, brushed or boiled. And
ladies, worry not; womens wear
has been added to the line. JFL

HOAX
COUTURE

One is an architect, the

other a lawyer. In both life
and work, they make a
spectacular duo. Its hard
to believe its been 15
years since Torontonians
Jim Searle and Chris Tyrell
first created their label,
Hoax Couture. With no
formal fashion training, the
pair quit their respective
day jobs to begin selling
their creations which,
at the time, consisted of
T-shirts on a street
corner. When their first
collections turned all the
right heads, the pair played
their cards right and the
rest is history. Their style is
at once classic and romantic,
unique but with universal
appeal. And their threads
can be spotted on the
backs of such celebrities as
*NSYNC, Jann Arden,
Alannah Myles and boy-band
The Moffatts. MC

JULIE BRUB

Four years ago, this 31-year-old graduate of Montreals

LaSalle College opted to cross the pond and move to London,
England. I was fed up after my studies and wanted a new life
experience, she explained during a recent telephone interview.
Once in London, Brub was promptly hired as assistant to
German designer Markus Lupfer, and, somehow, also found
time to work on her own creations. Evidently, her move was a
good one. Brub presented her first show at prestigious
London Fashion Week last February. Starting with androgynous
silhouettes, she unites ultra-feminine pieces, such as capes
and cardigans with plunging necklines, with more basic styles,
including pinstripe trousers that evoke a military sensibility.
She also loves to combine neutral shades with vibrant colour,
creating an innovative yet accessible prt-a-porter collection
that fuses streetwear and subtle glamour. JFL

The emotional and intuitive sides of your

If youve been concerned about your

recent lack of incentive or lack of work
you can expect a turnaround. Despite
the usual tendency to slow down this
month, youve seldom been so productive.
You still find time to socialize, and in a
stylish fashion at that.

The gap narrows as you develop rapport

with those from both older and younger
generations. Your leadership skills are in
demand, especially during the middle
chunk of the month. To everyones surprise
and relief your domestic skills are
impressive.

Gemini

Dont hold back when it comes to telling

others how much you care about them.
Be cautious, however, where criticism is
involved. Someone youre just getting to
know shares an unusual interest. Get a
professional opinion before signing
agreements.

Despite the hubbub of the season

in fact, because of it this proves a
productive time. Your listening skills are
sharp, so you can expect to pick up
important bits of information.

STARS TALK ABOUT FAITH
I BY SUSAN GRANGER

BRITNEY SPEARS I believe in the

power of prayer. Im a practicing Baptist.
I had a Bible book that I prayed in, night
after night. I would pray, I hope my song
plays on a certain radio station thats
really big, and it happened. Then I was
like, I pray they play it on MTV. I am
totally blessed.
JOHN MALKOVICH I believe in people.
I believe in humans. I believe in a car.
But I dont believe in something I can
have absolutely no evidence of.

JENNIFER LOPEZ Although, as a good

Catholic, I went to church every Sunday,
it wasnt until I was an adult that I realized
how important it is to have a relationship
with God. God is a very big part of my
life. I pray a lot.

COURTNEY LOVE When I attend

church and they say, Father, I replace
that with Mother.
ELIJAH WOOD When I sign an autograph I always write, God Bless You. Im
a Christian and thats important to me.

BILL GATES Religion is not very

efficient. Theres a lot more I could be
doing on a Sunday morning.
WESLEY SNIPES I never fail to pray
before a meal.

JOHN WOO I am a Christian and I love

doves. Doves represent the purity of love,
beauty. Theyre spiritual. Also, the dove is
the messenger between people and God.

faith to get in.

MARTIN SHEEN I was married in the

Church, and I baptized my children. But,
like all modern Catholics, I felt for a time
that I had outgrown the Church. Now it is
a bone of contention in my soul that I did
not share my faith with my kids, as my
parents did with me. It was a source of
grace when I needed it. I have been greatly
nurtured and inspired by my faith.
