OLD-TIME HERO
A

s the buzz over Superman Returns

builds, its hard not to get nostalgic
about the Superman movies of the
late 70s and early 80s.
In large part, thats because the new
Man of Steel, Brandon Routh, looks so
much like the old one, Christopher Reeve
a seemingly superhuman physical
specimen who proved only too human
when a 1995 horseback riding accident
left him paralyzed, with complications
eventually leading to his death in 2004.
But its also because those movies
there were four in total were unique.
Now, Im not using the word unique in the colloquial sense, like
when you use it to describe something thats particularly innovative.
I mean that when Superman came out in 1978 it was the only major
movie of its time based on a comic book. The Flash Gordon type of
serials that were popular in the 1930s and 40s were long gone by then,
and Tim Burtons Batman wouldnt be made for another 11 years.
That uniqueness is hard to fathom now that comic book adaptation
has become a movie genre alongside thriller, romance and
western. But, back then, special effects technology was just reaching
the point where it could reasonably depict a man stopping a speeding
train with his bare hands or lifting a car above his head. In fact, the
films tagline was the incredulous: Youll believe a man can fly!
Because they were so distinctive, the Superman movies made a deep
impression (particularly the first two, admittedly the bloom was off the
rose by IV). They were funny, sweet, romantic and morally simple
good battled evil and eventually won, even if it required flying around
the Earth with enough velocity to reverse its spin and turn back time.
In Born to be Superman, page 26, Routh recalls the first time he
saw Superman. It involved Man of Steel pyjamas and some aggressive
couch jumpinglong before Tom Cruise made it dclass.
On page 18 youll find Fashion Victims, our interview with
Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway about The Devil Wears Prada. The
film is based on Lauren Weisbergers 2003 novel, which made great
use of the first-time authors experience as a misused and abused
assistant at Vogue magazine. But Streep insists her performance has
nothing to do with Vogues infamous and powerful editor Anna Wintour.
Oh no, of course not.
Have we reached the point where what Jennifer Aniston does on
screen gets more coverage than her life off
screen? Lets hope so. Of course, her mission to
move the focus from her personal to professional
life isnt helped by her rumoured romance
with Vince Vaughn, her co-star in this months
romantic comedy The Break-Up. We catch up with
Aniston in New Movie, New Man, New Start,

COPYRIGHT: NATIONAL PORTRAIT GALLERY, LONDON

oted British artist Stuart Pearson

Wrights drawing of Harry Potter star
Daniel Radcliffe was unveiled this past
spring before taking its place on a wall
inside Britains prestigious National
Portrait Gallery. The then 14-year-old actor
(he turns 17 in July) had four sittings with
Wright, who told Englands Guardian
newspaper it was one of his more difficult
assignments, since Radcliffe was so young
and his face had an extreme openness
and lack of cynicism and it was difficult
to know what to do with that. I have a
particular affinity with grizzly old men.
Pearson Wright made waves in 2004
with his portrait of Royal Family patriarch
Prince Philip, drawing him naked from the
waist up. He used an 80-year-old body
double for the task.
Radcliffes portrait was one of nine the
gallery acquired from the artist, all from
his exhibition Most People Are Other
People, Portraits of Actors from Britain and
Ireland. Some of his other subjects include
Jeremy Irons, Alan Rickman and ERs
Parminder Nagra. IR

WHEN CREEPY
KIDS GROW UP
W

ith an adorable name like Seamus

Davey-Fitzpatrick, the little guy who
plays Damien Thorn The Omens devilin-short-pants couldnt be all bad.
Still, we worry about the tyke.
So we searched high and
low for some information
about the fates of the other
two kids whove played
Damien Harvey Stephens
in the 1976 original version
of The Omen, and Jonathan
Scott-Taylor in the 1978
follow-up, Damien: Omen II.
(Were not so concerned
about Sam Neill, who played
the little devil all grown up in
the third movie, 1981s The
Final Conflict. Were still
mad at him for cutting off
Holly Hunters fingers in
The Piano, so he can fend for himself.)
The first thing that became evident was
that the devil has gone underground. There
is very little known about either actor. But
the best available sources (a few blogs and
the Internet Movie Database) tell us that
little Harvey, who, like Seamus, had never
made a film before The Omen, appeared in
one more TV movie before calling it quits
and becoming a (cue the scary music)
futures trader on the London Stock
Exchange. One blog entry, professing to be
written by someone who knows the adult
Stephens, adds, every time he makes a
great deal on the stock exchange his
famous 10 | june 2006

co-workers tease him that he had help

from a darker source.
As for Jonathan Scott-Taylor, who was
already a seasoned actor when he was cast
as Damien at the age of 15, he spent
another 10 years appearing in British TV,
movies and stage productions (including a
production of Henry V with Kenneth
Branagh) before realizing
his more nefarious calling
and becoming a lawyer in
the U.K.
So good luck little
Seamus, and if a few years
from now you feel the urge
to put on a sensible suit
and talk someone into
buying life insurance, dont
fight it. The dark side
always wins. MW

HUBERT
DAVIS...
after Oscar

t doesnt matter whether its an Oscarnominated documentary, a Nike ad or a

short film, Hubert Davis just wants
to direct.
You may remember Davis as the Canadian
filmmaker who made a splash in 2005 when
his first film, the 30-minute documentary
Hardwood, was nominated for an Oscar.
Its like going up to bat and hitting a
home run on your first swing, the 30-yearold Davis says of the film that chronicled the
life of his basketball-playing father. But
what do you do next?
For the Vancouver-born Davis its making
a short film a poignant, 11-minute drama
called Aruba, which was screened at this
years Sundance Film Festival and is
included in this months lineup at the
Canadian Film Centres Worldwide Short
Film Festival, which takes place June 13-18
in Toronto.
Set in the heart of a Toronto housing
complex, Aruba focuses on an 11-year-old
boy who comes up with a plan to deal with

both a school bully and his moms drugdealing, abusive boyfriend. Its a beautifully
shot and thoughtful drama that draws its
inspiration from Daviss past.
I used to work in North Vancouver with
at-risk kids, he explains. I moved to
Toronto in 1999, but I always thought back
on those kids I worked with and the kind of
things they must deal with, must see and
must go through. Its something thats never
left me and I wanted to do something with it
and Aruba came out of that.
The film was among the 70 shorts (chosen
out of some 4,300 entries) to screen at
Sundance this past January. Unfortunately,
Davis wasnt in Utah to enjoy the experience
as he was shooting a Nike commercial in
Florida. Commercials are, as any young
filmmaker will tell you, one of the few viable
options through which to get some on-thejob training.
Directing commercials lets me further
my craft, thats where Im at career-wise,
says Davis. You work in different mediums,
famous 12 | june 2006

with different DOPs [directors of photography]

and different casts of characters. You learn
to be a better filmmaker, and I hope Ill use
all those things to make my first feature film
before too long.
When asked which directors he admires,
Davis gives the stock answers Martin
Scorsese, Spike Lee. But there is also a
surprising addition to the list: Canadas own
Deepa Mehta (Water, Bollywood/Hollywood).
I worked as an assistant editor on a couple
of Deepa Mehta films and Im inspired by her
courage as a filmmaker, that she is pretty
much fearless and also very confident and
uncompromising.
Its like full-steam ahead, we are going
to get this done, he continues. She just
exudes a certain confidence, and you have
fun with her going down that path.

FASHION

VICTIMS
The Devil Wears Prada holds a mirror to the ugly world of high-fashion
publishing with Meryl Streep as an insanely demanding editor and Anne Hathaway
as her suffering underling I BY EARL DITTMAN

hree years ago the publishing and

fashion industries were all atwitter
about a novel penned by first-time
author Lauren Weisberger. It wasnt that
The Devil Wears Prada was so beautifully
written, or that it contained brilliant
insights about the world in which we live.
It was that one of the main characters
Miranda Priestly, a bullying fashion
magazine editor who makes life hell for
all of her employees, but particularly
her assistant Andrea was clearly a
caricature of Anna Wintour, the revered
editor of Vogue magazine.
The fact that Weisberger had briefly
worked as Wintours assistant sealed
the deal.
Now the book has been turned into a
movie with two-time Oscar winner
Meryl Streep as the oppressive editor
and Anne Hathaway fresh off her
performance in Brokeback Mountain
as Andrea, the books narrator who is
believed to be based on the author.
For the screen version, however,
Streep insists that her boss from hell is
not Wintour, but an original creation.
The script for the movie is quite
different from the book because this
woman that Im portraying is specific to
the needs of our script, and she is completely made up, the 56-year-old actor
insists between tiny sips of water during
an interview in New York. She doesnt
look like Anna Wintour, walk like her or
think like her. Im fairly sure of that. But
there are certain things that they have in
common that people go after with

Anna Wintour or any woman in a powerful position.

Sadly enough, I dont think a lot of
people like strong women because I had
the same problem with The Manchurian
Candidate, Streep continues. People
kept asking me if I modelled the politically involved mother on Hillary Clinton,
Elizabeth Dole or even Martha Stewart.
Of course, it was none of them. I
created the character. Its the same with

People are ready for

this film because they
think that the knives are
out, and that makes for
good anticipation at the
box office, says Streep
The Devil Wears Prada. Im portraying a
totally fictional fashion editor. I wouldnt
have done it any other way. I was not
interested in doing the Anna Wintour
story. That didnt interest me at all.
In Weisbergers book she writes about
a fashion editor who is so cruel and
demanding that she tells her stressed-out
assistant that shes not allowed to leave
her desk, eat or even go to the bathroom.
I read someones comments about
the book saying that it was a very thinly
veiled, i.e. transparent, look at Lauren
Weisbergers life working as an assistant
at Vogue, says 23-year-old Hathaway in a

after Streeps. We kind of left all of that
behind for the film any kind of snarkiness or revenge motivation that the
book has. Mind you, I really like Lauren
a lot as a person, but any kind of tone of
that nature, we dont have it, were not
making any kind of character assassination piece. None of us had any vested
interest or desire to do that. For me, the
film, this is actually the direction writer
Don Roos took it in.
Directed by David Frankel (TVs
Entourage and Sex and the City), the movie
follows small-town Andrea as she graduates from college and lands the gig as
Priestlys assistant at Runway, where
Prada, Armani and Versace are revered
like gods. The office is populated with
too-gorgeous-to-be-true devotees of the
fashion lifestyle, but each and every one
of them can quickly be reduced to a
quivering mass of nerves by a single
sentence from Priestly.
As is often the case with personal
assistants, Andrea gets the brunt of her
bosss wrath. But she endures, thinking
that if she can stick it out for just one year
she will be able to procure a positive
recommendation from Priestly and
move on to another, less humiliating job.
I find that the most interesting
aspect of the film is that its really about
two schools of feminism meeting each
other. muses Hathaway. The other
take is that I wear tons of Chanel.
You cant help but notice that Streep is
surprisingly slim and trim in this film. Its

quite a different look from her

appearance in last years romanticcomedy Prime, in which she played a
matronly, slightly overweight psychotherapist. Since The Devil Wears Prada
would require her to appear in designer
duds by the likes of Chanel, Marc Jacobs,
Valentino, Donna Karan and, of course,
Prada, Streep knew she had to shave
off the 30 pounds she had purposely
packed on for Prime.
Initially, I just started doing little
things like pushing the wine bottle away
after the first glass instead of starving myself, recalls Streep. I kept telling myself,
I have to fit into those clothes and look
great in them. Otherwise, I wont be able
to look in the mirror. She accelerated
her weight loss by monitoring what she
ate and exercising a bit more each day.
Everything fit, so I think I did okay.
A self-professed clothes horse and a
college graduate with a major in costume
design, Streep now realizes she could
never be the editor of a fashion magazine.
I couldnt personally do that job. I
think everyone dresses very interestingly,
in spite of all the problems that the world
gives us, and everyone expresses themselves somehow in what theyre wearing,
says Streep.
Im interested in costume design as it
expresses character, as it expresses who a
person is, she continues. Thats really
what interests me, and I studied it in
college and it was my major when I
graduated. But as far as fashion, thats a
whole other thing. Its a business and
it has to do with money at its bottom. The

nexus of money and art, Im not sure I

really understand all of those issues, but
its fascinating to look at them now.
Spending her days with a soundstage
full of expensive designer duds has
turned Hathaway into a bit of a fashionista
too. Im getting to know a lot of designers

because of the film, but Im not particularly loyal to just one, like the way Ashley
Judd is to Armani, Hathaway explains.
But there are a lot of great designers out
there who have great pieces. I try to stay
away from things that everybody is
wearing, generally speaking, because
thats just something Ive always done.
Although she insists Priestly is not
based on Wintour, Streep does admit
that the controversy surrounding her
characters identity is creating the most
buzz over this movie.
People are ready for this film because
they think that the knives are out, and so
that makes for good anticipation at the
box office, says Streep. I can understand the fervour over the role, because
its a great part and the anticipation
over how the whole story is depicted is
almost bloody.
People really love this story because
weve all been a demeaned, abused
assistant at one time or another in our
careers, says Hathaway. Weve all been
the underdog.

in Houston, Texas.

WINTOUR GETAWAY
I

ts widely accepted that Miranda

Priestly, the cruel editor at the
centre of Lauren Weisbergers book
The Devil Wears Prada, is based on
Vogue helmer Anna Wintour, seen
here at last years New York
Fashion Week yet Meryl Streep
claims her movie version of the
overbearing boss has nothing to do
with the super-powerful Wintour.
True or Hollywood politics?
If it is true, the memo didnt
reach the films set designer.
Check out the photos comparing
Wintours and Priestlys offices at

rooms feature cream-coloured
walls scattered with black and

and a minimalist metal-framed desk

Domestic disturbance:
The Break-Ups
Jennifer Aniston and
Vince Vaughn

Im not trying to shake anything, Aniston

says of why she chose to make a movie about
breaking up. I just follow my instincts

and psychological, as each one tries

to bully the other into leaving their once
blissful nest. Dishes pile up in the sink,
sporting events are watched at a noisy roar,
and somehow a pool table ends up in the
way of everything. Let the childs play
begin. Jon Favreau, Vaughns Swingers
buddy, Vincent DOnofrio, Joey Lauren
Adams and Ann-Margret co-star.
I did love filming The Break-Up in
Chicago, and Id move there if I knew
more people, Aniston tells a group of
journalists in New York. It was just fun to
do. Rumours that she was looking for
a house in Chicago last April never
amounted to much, with Aniston even
calling The Oprah Winfrey Show to refute
those stories, among others.
She says the comedy with Vaughn
seemed appropriate because it was
something I could relate to. But she also
insists shes not trying to make a point in
some melodramatic way.
And Im not trying to shake anything,
she adds. I just follow my instincts in
doing work that is coming to me and
Im grateful for whatever I get, including
The Break-Up.
Truth is, she had a hit-and-miss film
career before, during and after TVs
Friends. The formula comedies didnt

work out so well there was 1997s

Picture Perfect (she hires a guy to pretend
to be her boyfriend) and 1998s The Object
of My Affection (she falls in love with her
gay best friend), both of which featured
Aniston as the above-the-title star.
However, she did just fine as a co-star in
two hit comedies with Jim Carrey in
2003s Bruce Almighty and Ben Stiller in
2004s Along Came Polly. Both did decent
box-office and both earned Aniston
some of the best reviews of her career.
Then in 2002, her turn as a plain-Jane
store clerk in The Good Girl gave Aniston
a brief respite from the quirky-cute thing.
It also gave her a credibility she had never
enjoyed before, and didnt enjoy again
until earlier this year when she popped
up as the least successful of a group of
L.A. gal-pals in Friends With Money.
Either way, she says she feels lucky to be
doing any kind of acting.
Born in Sherman Oaks, California,
Anistons parents divorced when she was
nine. Her father, John Aniston, is an
actor and is best known as debonair
Greek businessman Victor Kiriakis on the
soap Days of Our Lives (Jennifer is halfGreek). She was raised by her mother,
Nancy Dow, who was also an actor, and
the acting bug bit her early. At 11 she
famous 24 | june 2006

joined the Rudolf Steiner Schools drama

club, then began her serious training
at New Yorks High School for the
Performing Arts.
Graduating at 17, she appeared in
such Off-Broadway productions as
For Dear Life and Dancing on Checkers
Grave, and then landed her first TV role
as a regular on the 1990 Mayim Bialik
comedy Molloy. She also took over Jennifer
Greys part in 1990s TV version of
Ferris Bueller, and appeared on Hermans
Head in 1991 and The Edge in 92. But her
career was stalled when she auditioned
for a pilot called Friends Like These in 1994.
Wisely, Aniston passed when asked to
audition for the role of Monica, instead
trying to impress the producers with
her take on spoiled-but-good-hearted
Rachel Green, a savvy decision that made
Aniston very famous and very rich, as that
pilot eventually turned into Friends.
Now in her post-Friends phase, her
divorce from Pitt has overshadowed her
career even though she usually takes the
high road and rarely discusses the split.
Although, she did speak out just a little
on Oprah last year, and she admitted in a
Vanity Fair piece that she divorced Pitt
because he was having an affair. Angelina
Jolies name never came up, but it didnt
really have to.
To make matters more enticing for
the media, Aniston continues to be
romantically linked to Vaughn. They were
repeatedly photographed together in
Chicago while filming The Break-Up, and
later in L.A. and New York.
But on The Late Show with David Letterman
just last month, Vaughn was still noncommittal about the relationship.
Hey, nice going on that Jennifer
Aniston thing, Letterman congratulated
Vaughn, who responded, Its very nice of
you to say that Dave, thank you. Yeah, its
been kind of interesting for me, and I just
choose not to talk about my private life
that much publicly. Vaughn later added,
Im not saying we are or arent a couple.
I think shes great, but I just dont discuss
whether we are.
So when will the publicity surrounding
Anistons social life subside?
I dont know, she says. I mean, I
would have thought that it should have
ended. There are so many new magazines
now that I think that theyre just desperate
to fill them up. The demand is greater,
and so theyre going nuts.

BORN TO BE

SUPERMAN
With his chiseled features and lifelong infatuation with the Man of Steel, Brandon Routh
was destined to play the iconic superhero I BY EARL DITTMAN

What do you remember about seeing Superman as a kid?

When I was five or six, the first time I was going to see
Superman, I was dressed up in Superman pyjamas that I had,
the cape and all of it my mom still has that stuff. I was
jumping around the house, jumping on the furniture
because I was so excited to finally see the movie. I got so
excited that I gave myself a migraine. I think that means
[I was always] supposed to play Superman.
Are you being serious?
I guess this role has always kind of been in my life, ever since
I moved out to Los Angeles really. My first manager mentioned that I looked a lot like Christopher Reeve and thats
one reason that he wanted to work with me. Hed always say
that if there was a Superman movie that I was going to get it.
That was six years ago. Then, when Smallville came around,
I auditioned for that and I got a callback, was really excited,
but then it didnt happen. So I was like, There goes that.
Theres no way that theyre going to redo Superman again.

Brandon Rouths
Clark Kent

You went from having a couple of modeling gigs and a small role
on One Life to Life to this life-altering part. How have you been
able to deal with the change?
I dont let myself get bogged down by any of it. The process
was very smooth for me, and it kind of took a long time for it
to happen. There were several stages of, Am I going to get
this? Am I really going to get this? Wow. I think that Im going
to get this. I am going to get this. And so I had a while to
become okay with it.
Do you ever wake up in a cold sweat thinking, Oh my God, what
have I gotten myself into?
No. I havent yet. I mean, I dont block it out, but Im not
fretting over [it] because there are endless possibilities and I
know my life is going to change. It changes every day. I mean,
talking about myself is not something that I normally do.
How did you react when you were told you had the part?
Well, it was a long process. I kind of knew three weeks before
I actually got the go-ahead that there was a 99 percent
chance. I just had to have one more meeting. So Id had a lot
of time to think about it and be prepared for it. So when it
actually happened it was a relatively uneventful phone call.
I think that the person on the other end was going,
Congratulations! I was like, Great. Thank you. It was more
of a big relief to finally have it happen.

between scenes, and the rest of his cast mates
Kate Bosworth, Kevin Spacey and Parker Posey all
feasting at the studio commissary, Brandon Routh (rhymes with
mouth) is relaxing outside the Sydney, Australia, soundstage
that houses much of the set for Superman Returns.
Hes only three weeks into the six-month shoot for this
unofficial sequel to Superman II (the one where three black-clad
criminals from Krypton make a beeline for Earth). The story
picks up after the Man of Steel departed Earth several years
ago to return to Krypton. Finding nothing left of his home
planet he returns to our planet only to find that people have
learned to live without him and, worst of all, Lois Lane
(Bosworth) has moved on and has a child. But Lex Luthor
(Spacey) has just been released from jail, and with Luthor on
the prowl chances are the world will need Superman again.
After the project had been in development for decades,
Bryan Singer (X-Men, The Usual Suspects) ended up in the
directors chair and the lead role went to Routh, a little-known,
26-year-old Iowa-born actor whose biggest previous job was a
small part on One Life to Live. And thats sort of fitting, since the
man best known for playing Superman, the late Christopher
Reeve, also came from a soap opera background.

cover | story | BRANDON ROUTH

How much was Christopher Reeves performance
an inspiration for you?
Its hard for me to answer. I mean, obviously its influenced
by Chriss performance because were somewhat using that as
a vague reference. So it has to follow that character a bit.
Beyond that, its within the writing, its within Clarks relationship to Superman and what he needs. Sometimes its
the spitting image of Chris and sometimes its my own thing.

more alive. Your skin feels tight. It was the same thing with the
suit. It kind of elevates you to another level and you feel more
confident and powerful about your body.
Did you ever feel silly?
I never once felt strange or goofy or funny or a fool in the suit.
They did such a great job not aging the suit, but modernizing
the suit, that I always think of it as stately and graceful and
kingly. I mean, Superman is a king. Hes the last son of Krypton.
And you feel like that, especially with the cape. We did a lot of
stuff without the cape and I definitely notice when I dont have
the cape or the boots on.

How do you make a superhero relatable on a human level?

Thats a good question. I think that whats interesting about
Superman Returns, [which] youll see a lot of that at the farm,
[is that] he comes back from his journey and hes lost. Hes
learned things about the world that have changed, and hes
not found what he went after and all of these things, and he
feels alone. Hes not sure if he wants to even use his power.
Its at that point that he really tries to connect with the world
and with his humanity. I mean, hes an alien, but hes human
or he does his best to be like one. He lives here. He wants to
be part of the world. So he uses shovels and he uses human
instruments and tools instead of doing things that he could
do easily on his own to feel that connection with the world.
Its about his humanity.

Were you involved when Kate Bosworth

was chosen to play Lois Lane?
Yes. There were five other girls at the time that we tested, and
then theyd leave. Im not sure what order Kate was in, but one
would leave and wed very briefly discuss what we liked or what
was nice about their performance, and when we were done
reading with Kate, she was still in the room and I was going,
Wow. That was like, I dont know. Now I know she brings a
real sincerity to the part. I mean, shes really got the relationship with Superman and Clark, that back story is really working
for her so that when were talking, were both coming from a
place where our past experiences are bringing us forward and
are evident in our present lives.

Tell me about the suit.

Wow, the first time that I put on the suit was really pretty great,
aside from just the fact that there were a lot of people sitting
around watching you put on this very skin-tight thing [laughs].
I was in good shape, but I wasnt in as good of shape that I am
in now. It was very revealing. But, instantly, theres a sense of
power by putting it on. Because of how tight it fits, I use this
analogy, its like working out. When you work out your blood is
pumping throughout your body. Your veins, the size of the veins
are bigger and there is more blood and so everything feels

How many more Superman films are you signed for?

Contracts are weird, but Warner Brothers has me for two more
films. But there is law and technicalities, but two more for the
sake of it.

Lois Lane

ate Bosworth says that,

although shed seen the
original Superman movies when
she was a kid, she decided not to
re-watch them before turning in
her rendition of Lois Lane.
Thats not unusual. A lot of
actors shy away from previous
versions of their characters for
fear of being too influenced by
another actors performance, and
Canadian Margot Kidders
portrayal of Lois Lane is iconic.
We just wanted to start sort of
fresh, says Bosworth.
But that doesnt mean movie
watching wasnt a big part of
Bosworths preparation.
This might sound weird to you,
but the thing that I did do to
prepare for the role the most was
watch a lot of Katharine Hepburn
movies. I wanted to draw from
females, from actresses that
conducted themselves with

famous 28 | june 2006

immense strength and poise and

grace, and who were just strong
and independent and had a side
of fragility to them, which makes
them very attractive.
So watch out for a bit of
Hepburns haughty, but inwardly
fragile, Tracy Lord from
The Philadelphia Story, or even
a touch of her competitive Tess
Harding from Woman of the Year
in Bosworths performance.
After all, Lanes newspaper
reporter is the type wholl do
anything to get the story.
Oh, and if Lane appears in a
skimpy skirt and push-up bra,
that, of course, is not an homage
to Hepburn. There was one
other movie Bosworth used for
inspiration.
So it was a lot of Katharine
Hepburn movies, she says, and
Julia Roberts in Erin Brockovich.

2) One day he discovers a woman (Bryce

the buildings swimming pool. 3) Turns
out she is not a woman, but a fictional
character who has escaped from a bedtime
story and shes trying to get back home.

Now, go!
Truth is we dont know that Lady in the
Water ends with a trick, but that is one of
Shyamalans most bankable trademarks
like giving himself a cameo and exploring
the supernatural.
And, despite the fact that this movie is
based on a bedtime story Shyamalan made
up for his kids, dont expect it to be filled to
the brim with lightness and fairies. The
spook-factor comes courtesy of some
considerably less likable fictional creatures
from that same bedtime story who are trying
to keep the lady from returning home.

Add blue to white for a clean, fresh and breezy summer look I BY LIZA HERZ

IN A WORLD where Paris Hilton

is a style icon with four best-selling

fragrances and the raunchy Pussy Cat
Dolls pop band will soon be actual dolls
for six-year-olds to play with, perhaps
our notion of what defines feminine
allure needs a rethink.
This summer, wed like to promote a
restrained vision of sexy no T-shirts
with the words Porn Star written
across the chest in cursive glitter, no
peek-a-boo miniskirts that reveal ones
favourite thong colour. Instead, a
deliberately casual sexiness that uses
this summers hottest colour, white, as
a jumping-off point.
White is not only a sophisticated
antidote to garish summer brights and
the ultimate in elegant simplicity (think
of fashion icon Bianca Jagger in her
white YSL pantsuits), but nothing else
can set off your early summer tan
(a self-tan, we hope) quite so well.
And while we love the white eyelet
dresses that Michael Kors, Prada and
Chlo showed for summer, if you think
that overtly wide-eyed innocent look
gives you the air of a Precious Moments
doll, make it edgier by pairing a white
openwork top with skinny jeans, big
sunglasses, a gigantic tote and viciously
high heels for a Cote dAzur vibe, or
with softly faded jeans for a more
beachy, low-key look.
At night, try pairing a white linen
jacket with jeans. Depending on how
daring you feel, add a white camisole
underneath or nothing at all, to show
off that sun-kissed bare skin.

More casual than a

cocktail dress and sexier
too, this White Linen
Jacket from Second
($130, Over the Rainbow,
Toronto) has 3% Lycra
to resist creasing and
mixes easily with all
your summer items from
chiffon skirts to jeans.

Five tricks to get

long, hot summer

1 Fill these Sommar Lolly

Makers ($1.50 for six, IKEA)
with your favourite beverage,
stick them in the freezer, and
a few hours later youve got
custom-made popsicles.
2 You dont need to dig up
the yard and spend a years
salary to enjoy a dip on a hot
day. The Dolfino Simple-Set
Pool ($60, Canadian Tire)
includes a filter pump system
and can comfortably fit three
to four people.

3 The ultimate slushy

maker, Hamilton Beachs new
WaveStation Blender ($70,
Sears, The Bay) utilizes
unique technology that
pushes fruit chunks and ice
pieces in an upward motion
for better blade contact,
meaning no more lumps. Plus,
the dispensing spout lets you
pour your drink without
taking the jar off the stand.
4 We love Hagen-Dazs new
Mayan Chocolate Ice Cream
($6 for 500 ml, grocery

of the intoxicating hot chocolate
Juliette Binoche makes in
Chocolat rich, but with a
hint of spicy cinnamon.

feel like theyve been in an
oven all day, massage them
with Yves Rochers Lavande

COOKING
COOL
Health and wellness expert
Rose Reisman shares fresh recipes
for chilling out this summer

Sweet Red and

Yellow Pepper Soup

Although it does require some

time spent over the stove, once
chilled this attractive soup is a light
and refreshing treat. Serves six.
Ingredients:
2 sweet red peppers
2 sweet yellow peppers
2 tsp vegetable oil
11/2 cups chopped onions
11/4 cups chopped carrots
1
/2 cup chopped celery
2 tsp minced garlic
2 cups chicken or vegetable stock
11/2 cups diced, peeled potatoes
1
/4 tsp salt
Freshly ground black pepper, to taste
1
/4 cup chopped fresh coriander,
basil or dill
Method:
1. Under a preheated broiler or
over medium-high heat on grill, cook
peppers, turning occasionally, for 15
minutes, or until charred on all sides.
Cool. Peel, stem and core.
2. In a nonstick saucepan sprayed with
vegetable spray, heat oil over medium heat;
cook onions, carrots, celery and garlic,
stirring occasionally for 8 minutes, or until
softened. Stir in stock and potatoes. Bring
to a boil. Reduce heat to low; cover and
cook for 20 to 25 minutes, or until carrots
and potatoes are tender. Stir in salt.
3. In blender or food processor, pure the
red peppers until smooth. Add half of soup
mixture to machine; process until smooth.
Transfer to serving bowl. Season to taste
with pepper. Rinse machine. In clean
blender or food processor, pure yellow
peppers until smooth. Add remaining
soup mixture; process until smooth.
Transfer to another serving bowl. Season
to taste with pepper. Chill before serving.
4. To serve, ladle some red pepper
soup into one side of a bowl, while
ladling some yellow pepper soup into the
same bowl from the other side. Serve
garnished with coriander.

Strawberry,
Banana & Orange

Its a hot, sticky morning and
the last thing you feel like is
bacon and eggs. Try a smoothie.
The protein and fruit in this
combo will keep you full for
longer than most ordinary
breakfasts. Serves two to four.

1 cup frozen or fresh sliced
strawberries

n the heat of the summer we shy away from cooking in the

traditional sense. Weve spent endless hours standing over the
stove during the colder months and all we want now is to get out
of the kitchen and enjoy the outdoors. We naturally lean towards
cool foods to bring our body temperatures down. When we eat hot
food straight out of the oven we feel warmer and tend to sweat
more, which is not appreciated in the summer.
Spicy and fried foods also generate excess heat, leaving you
feeling dehydrated and lacking energy. We gravitate to chilled
drinks, appetizers, cold soups, room-temperature meals and frozen
desserts, which keep our body temperatures in better balance
giving us more energy.
Also, lets not forget about the joy of eating food we cultivate in
our local farms. The freshness of homegrown produce sure beats
the foods we eat in the winter after theyve been sitting on a long
truck ride from down south!

Pink Frosted
Cocktail
Much better than pop at your next
barbecue, this cocktail can be served
with or without alcohol. If you do
choose to add some, Id go for one of
the less flavourful options, like 2 oz of
vodka or gin. Serves six.
1 cup orange juice
1 cup pineapple juice
2 cups cranberry cocktail
8 large ice cubes
1. In blender combine all ingredients until ice
is crushed. Serve in martini or small glasses
with a mint leaf and floating raspberry.

Frozen Chocolate
Sour Cream
Cheesecake
Squares
Its hard to resist chocolate
cheesecake in any form, but these
particular squares work great
frozen, since cheesecake never gets
too hard. Makes 12 squares.
Ingredients:
CRUST
1
/2 cup granulated sugar
3 tbsp unsweetened
cocoa powder
2 tbsp vegetable oil

1 large egg
1
/2 tsp vanilla
2
/3 cup all-purpose flour
FILLING
2
/3 cup granulated sugar
2 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
1 tbsp all-purpose flour
2
/3 cup 5% smooth ricotta cheese
1
/4 cup light cream cheese, softened
2 tbsp low-fat sour cream
1 large egg white
1
/2 tsp vanilla
TOPPING
1 oz white or semi-sweet
chocolate chunks or
2 tbsp chocolate chips

Method:
1. Preheat the oven to 350F.
Spray an 8-inch square baking dish
with vegetable spray.
2. Make crust: In a bowl, stir together
sugar, cocoa, oil, egg and vanilla.
Stir in the flour just until combined.
Pat the mixture into the bottom of the dish.
3. Make filling: In a food processor,
combine sugar, cocoa, flour, ricotta
cheese, cream cheese, sour cream,
egg white and vanilla; pure until the
mixture is smooth. Spread it over the crust.
Sprinkle with chocolate.
4. Bake in the centre of the oven for
20 to 25 minutes or until the centre
is still slightly loose in the middle.
Cool and freeze until well chilled.

reading
Summer

Indigo CEO Heather Reisman recommends five books

that go well with a beach blanket or a poolside drink

1. Book of Longing
The wait is over! One of Canadas most
acclaimed writers, performers and artists,
Leonard Cohen, releases his newest
collection of poems, featuring erotic,
playful and provoking artwork by Cohen
himself, and language that leaps off the
page and into the soul.

author and protagonist continues his

journey towards healing after being
addicted to drugs and alcohol. His
recovery is made possible in many ways by
the unwavering love and support of
Leonard, whom he met in rehab. This book
covers the serious topics of drug abuse and
recovery, but is enormously uplifting and
suitably light for an afternoon by the pool.

2. Everybody Was So Young

5. The Birth House

First published in 1999, this was writer

and critic Amanda Vaills first book (shes
since written a couple more). Vaill brings
an iconic era vividly to life in this superb
biography of two real-life icons of the
1920s, Gerald and Sara Murphy. The
story takes us from the east coast of the
United States to the beaches of the Riviera
as the couple rubs shoulders with the likes
of Cole Porter, Ernest Hemingway and
Picasso. The narrative reveals so much
about both the Murphys and their time
that you feel as if you were there.

First-time author Ami McKay

delivers a beautifully written book
that offers a unique look into the
lives of midwives and the remarkable
journey of pregnancy in a small
Nova Scotia fishing village circa 1900.
The story follows Dora Rare, the first
girl born into the Rare family in
generations, who decides her destiny
is to take over for the villages
cherished midwife, Miss Babineau.
Doras birthing house allows us to
witness crucial moments in the lives
of the characters who pass through,
and also learn about their broken dreams,
marriages and sex lives.

3. Something Blue
By Emily Giffin

By Ami McKay

A sequel to Giffins wildly popular

Something Borrowed, its the perfect read
for lounging at the beach or in a shaded
hammock. Readers will hate to love and
love to hate Darcy Rhone, the self-centred,
self-proclaimed goddess who only steps
down off her high horse when an unwanted
pregnancy turns her world upside down.
The surprise bun in the oven prompts
Darcy to take off for London, England, to
recover with a friend and, with hope, get
herself together in time to become a mom.

4. My Friend Leonard
By James Frey

Depending on how you feel the term

memoir should be defined, youll either
run to this sequel to James Freys
controversial A Million Little Pieces or
avoid it like the plague. If you simply
looked at that first book as a great read,
youll be eager to join Frey again as the

BATTLE OF THE BOTS

Who needs people? Chromehounds pits machine against machine I BY SCOTT GARDNER

CHROMEHOUNDS
XBOX 360

This Xbox 360-exclusive is the

latest entry in the overpopulated
squad-based tactical shooter
genre, but with a most welcome
twist: Instead of puny little meat
bags in tin helmets and pitiful
body armour running around
firing pop guns at each other,
Chromehounds features

colossal mechanized combat

vehicles stomping around
and firing really big guns at
each other.
You see, in that familiar
videogame epoch known as the
not-too-distant future the
planets three superpowers
have been drawn into a global
war fought largely on the
ground by Chromehounds

N3: NINETY-NINE NIGHTS

(or Hounds, for short). Neither

robots nor humanoid-styled
units, these contraptions are
more like huge, crablike
walking tanks.
In the single-player mode you
are the tactical commander of a
small pack of Hounds. To battle
through 44 story-based
missions you must assemble a
team from six different classes
of machine scouts, heavy
gunners, snipers, etc. that
complement each other in terms
of firepower, range of movement
and ability. You then deploy
them on the field, and start
blasting away. The vehicles are
controlled in third-person view,
but you can also zoom into firstperson for tighter aiming.
Happily, Chromehounds
features an exceptional degree
of customization, enabling any
combination of armaments you
can dream up, as long as the

chassis can hold the weight

and the generator can power it.
As youd expect with a 360
game, the war machines and
environments are rendered in
very sharp and fully destructible
detail machine gun bullets
kick up dirt where they hit the
ground, you can destroy
any structure you see, and
the Hounds leave tracks
wherever they go.
The games Xbox Live
online capability is another
highlight. Multiplayer combat
mode allows gamers to take
to the field in clans of six for
head-to-head combat with
opposing clans.
Battles to take over the
world, of course take place

working together as a team is

elements, N3 takes place in a world where
humans, goblins and other mystical
creatures are at war.
The game features a twisty plot replete
with factional intrigue, family treachery and
seven main playable characters, so youll
experience a unique storyline depending on
your selection. In this multi-angle scenario
one character may fight against someone
and be justified, but in the eyes of a
different character these actions will be
unforgivable. The other hook is that using
the next-gen processing power of the 360,
some battles include more than 1,000

SUPERMAN RETURNS:
THE VIDEOGAME
PS2, XBOX, XBOX 360

Although it features the voices and

likenesses of Brandon Routh, Kevin
Spacey, Kate Bosworth and Parker Posey,
this game uses the new movie as a mere
jumping-off point to turn Supe loose in a
massive, interactive version of Metropolis.
Previous Superman outings have
disappointed by following the familiar
videogame construction of forcing the hero
to gradually acquire his powers throughout
the game as he completes various levels.
But, as he should, this Man of Steel comes
fully loaded with heat vision, freeze
breath, the ability to fly and, of course,
superstrength.
The challenge for gamers will be
twofold: combining Supermans powers in
imaginative ways, and defeating the
villains while causing a minimum of death
and destruction to the good citizens (and
infrastructure) of Metropolis.

NARUTO: ULTIMATE NINJA

PS2

Based on Japans most popular ninja

manga (or comic, to the uninitiated) and
its spinoff anime series, this fighting game
is made to actually look like a Japanese
cartoon, with a form of cell shading that
even features pencil marks on the
characters.
Naruto: Ultimate Ninja was released in
Japan in 2003, so if you understood the
lingo (or didnt mind playing in total
confusion) you could, in theory, have been
playing it for years. But now the rest of us
can ascend the ranks to become a fullfledged ninja while sampling its lush
environments, 14 playable combatants and
wildly inventive variety of fighting moves.

decades getting high, getting laid and
landing in jail. Now she decides the only way to get her life back on track is to return to
the moment when it went wildly off the rails the day she dropped out of high school.
So she re-enrolls at Flatpoint High. The comedy comes from perverting every after-school
special and heartwarming teen melodrama that came before, and in Sedariss grotesque
portrayal of the unsavory main character as she navigates (poorly) through typical
high school woes like STDs and infiltrating the popular crowd. Colbert plays science
teacher Chuck Noblet and fans will easily spot the seeds of his deadpan, tight-ass persona
from The Report in this performance.
How popular was this series with the New York film and TV industrys in-crowd?

three seasons have been offered together. Bonus materials on this six-DVD set include

STARSTALK
ABOUT MARRIAGE
BY SUSAN GRANGER

SALMA HAYEK My moms always asking

me, When will you finally get married? And
I always say, When I find a man who has
more balls than me.

TOM CRUISE Im the guy that likes

relationships. I love women. I believe in
marriage, and I will never give up on that.

BILLY BOB THORNTON Ive been

married five times and people think thats
some bizarre thing, and yet Ive got buddies
who refuse to get married and [have sex
with] 15 people a week. Im like: which is
better? At least Im trying.
MEG RYAN I believe in marriage. I like the
idea of two people being on the same side
and they will work together and form a life. I
would love to find that.
JENNIFER LOPEZ Im not the serial
marrying person that the press has made me
out to be.
JULIA ROBERTS Yeah, Danny [Moder]
was married when I met him. He sorted his
whole thing out, separate and apart from me.
And I sorted my life out, separate and apart
from him. Then we could begin our
relationship and our marriage.

SUSAN SARANDON Im certainly not an

expert, but Tim [Robbins] and I just
celebrated 18 years together, which in
Hollywood years, I think, is 45. We have
never needed marriage.
CAMERON DIAZ I do not want to be
manipulated into marriage. My parents
knew they were right for each other and
they are still the best of friends. The truth
is that if I wanted to be married with
children right now, I would be married with
children right now.

DREW BARRYMORE
Marriage is definitely not a goal
right now, but I still want to have
fun and be alive. I am so in love
with love.

JENNIFER ANISTON I have always been

somebody that really wants to be married.
