If you were a 21-year-old actor suddenly

thrust into the spotlight, would you want
one of your co-stars to compare you to
Meryl Streep?
Now think about it for a minute. Sure,
its flattering. Wow, it would feel nice. But
thats a lot of pressure. Its not the kind of
pressure that comes with being nominated
for an Oscar, being followed by paparazzi
or even reading about yourself in a
magazine. Its worse.

Its pressure to deliver.

Dennis Quaid laid the Meryl Streep comparison on his Smart People
co-star Ellen Page when he told Famous writer Bob Strauss, Ellen Page
is a movie star. I actually think shes like Meryl Streep.
If like most people youve only seen Page in Juno and her
various red carpet interviews, you may think that comparison is
misplaced. Truth is, the real-life Page seems pretty similar to her
charming, smartass character in Juno. And great acting is about
becoming something that youre not.
But dig back a little deeper in Pages 10-year career and youll
find several roles that are utterly smartass free. These are largely
tragic parts in movies like An American Crime, the true story of a
brutally abused girl in 1960s Indiana, or Hard Candy, where she
plays a single-minded 14-year-old out to get even with a pedophile.
In Hot Out of Halifax, page 32, Page explains why shes excited
to play an extremely bitchy, arrogant Young Republican in next
months Smart People, a character she says is extremely different
from Juno.
Charlize Theron has proven shes at her best when portraying a
character nothing like herself. The former model won an Oscar
playing a grizzly serial killer in Monster and was nominated for a
second as North Countrys down-and-out coal miner. This month
youll see her in another less-than-glam role a neglectful mother
who abandons her little girl in Sleepwalking. Read Getting Ugly,
page 40, to find out why Therons attracted to these harsh roles.
In Running the Show, page 44, former
Friends star David Schwimmer talks about
shooting his directorial debut, Run, Fat Boy, Run
in London, and on a shoestring budget.
And on page 36 youll find Whos Who,
our interview with Steve Carell about
voicing the Mayor of Who-ville in the latest
Dr. Seuss story to make it to the big screen,

WALK WITH

TODD
Rampant prostitution,
typhus, cholera and blood.

Lots of blood. Who wouldnt want

to spend part of their vacation
back in Sweeney Todds
Victorian London?
Now you can, and its
absolutely free except for
the plane fare, hotel and food.
Warner Brothers, the studio
behind Tim Burtons Sweeney
Todd: The Demon Barber of
Fleet Street, has teamed
with audio walk specialists
Soundmap to create the
Sweeney Todds London

audio tour, which is

free to download at
Timeout.com/SweeneyTodd.
Starting at the River Thames,
where the scorned barber
returned (singing, apparently)
to his vile London, the tour
consists of 17 stops
in the Fleet Street area, all
of which are significant to
Todds story of revenge, slashed
jugulars and human meat
pies. The narrator would like
you to believe Todd (played
by Johnny Depp in the movie)
really existed, and he may have.

Thomas Peckett Prest first wrote

about Todd in 1846, and Prest
was often inspired by crime
stories he read in The Times.
The narration is interspersed
with music from the movie and
sound bites from Burton, Depp
and Helena Bonham Carter,
who plays Mrs. Lovett, maker

DARK GAMES OF MARCH

NAZIS IN NEW YORK, BIO-MUTANTS AND ANCIENT MAYHEM By Scott Gardner

TURNING POINT:
FALL OF LIBERTY
PC, PS3, XBOX 360

In America, the 1950s are fondly

recalled as a time of peace and
prosperity, when life was happy
and predictable. In Turning Point:
Fall of Liberty, however, things
happen a little differently.
Set in 1953, this first-person
shooter imagines an alternate
history where the U.S. never
enters the Second World War...

until the war enters the States.

As construction worker
Dan Carson watches from a halfbuilt skyscraper, a fleet of Nazi
warships takes New York
harbour, and waves of giant
Zeppelins darken the sky. With
German paratroopers assaulting
the city block by block, Carson
barely escapes, but the
Big Apple isnt so lucky it falls
quickly as the invasion grows.
And videogame or not, its

chilling to see a huge scarlet

swastika banner hanging from
the Statue of Liberty.
Playing as the street-smart,
but otherwise regular guy,
Carson, your first task is just to
survive the chaos, but you soon
join the American Resistance,
using guerilla tactics against the
occupying Nazis. Of course,
the Third Reich was no pushover,
and after handily defeating
Europe it has spent the last

huge, violently insane metallo-creatures.

Now the military thinks Tenno is a monster, and
the monsters think hes human a pretty
convenient set-up for a kill-em-all action and
shooting game. And what kills they are, since our
heros main weapon is his glaive a pizza-sized
throwing star now growing out of his right hand.
But theres another variable, along with these
superpowers our hero is growing something even
less welcome: a conscience.

DARK SECTOR

PC, PS3, XBOX 360

GOD OF WAR:
CHAINS OF OLYMPUS PSP

While infiltrating a secret lab in a crumbling

Eastern Bloc country, ruthless agent Hayden Tenno
is infected by a bio-weapon that turns parts of his
body into metal and allows him to morph into
different combat forms. Even worse, the
bio-weapon has mutated everyone else into

This prequel tracks the trials of the brutal (but

oddly lovable) warrior Kratos during his decade of

decade developing powerful

new weapons not spaceships
and lasers but the technologies
that were on its drawing boards
at the end of the real WWII, like
jet engines and rocket launchers.
So youre outgunned and
outmanned, but you make up
for it with your knowledge of
the local terrain subway
tunnels, rooftops, bodegas
and desperation. For example,
short of weapons and ammo,
youll engage in a lot more handto-hand combat than the usual
shooters, including nifty
grappling features and using
enemies as human shields.
In most heroic, invasionthemed games the ultimate goal
is to single-handedly win the
war, but in Turning Point your
sights are set a little lower.
Carson and his comrades just
want to stay alive and maybe,
just maybe, strike a few larger
symbolic blows to inspire their
besieged nation. Can they
do it? Well, if theres one tribe of
humans you shouldnt mess
with its a bunch of pissed-off
New Yorkers.

Gamers have good reason to be suspicious of

epic console games reappearing on handhelds, but
the God of War series exists in a different reality.
The PS2 versions are that systems smoothest and
best-looking games, yet Chains of Olympus
recreates the same dramatic camera angles and
epic set pieces despite the PSPs four-inch screen.
So to update The Bard: Cry havoc and let slip the
gods of war!

living in Halifax. Other than that, not so

much. Im obviously still the same. But
well probably be able to tell more soon.
Well see what happens.
It will be instructive to see if Pages
sharp, offbeat humour proves as popular
with audiences of her next indie release,
Smart People, which revolves around a
sad, dysfunctional family, and debuted
at the Sundance Film Festival in January.
The film is scheduled to open across
North America on April 14th.
I play a character who is extremely
different from Juno, which is exciting,
Page enthuses during a recent interview
at the Los Angeles Four Seasons Hotel.
Shes an extremely bitchy, arrogant
Young Republican. It was a blast to shoot.
Its not a political movie, though, more a
slice of life. It was produced by Michael
London who produced Sideways, and
directed by a wonderful director named
Noam Murro. Its kind of a dramedy, or
whatever you want to call it.
One person whos certain Page will
continue to be a sensation is Smart People
co-star Dennis Quaid, who plays her selfabsorbed, college professor father.
famous 33 | march 2008

Ellen Page is a movie star, Quaid

declares. Shes an incredible actress. I
actually think shes like Meryl Streep.
Youre going to hear stuff about her.
Streep, however, followed a rigorous
course of formal training. It all began kind
of off-handedly for Page, when a TV
movie shoot, Pit Pony, came to Halifax
looking for a tween girl to put on a horse.
When I was 10 I just kind of randomly
got asked to audition for a CBC movie
of the week by a local casting director
because I was short and had brown hair or
whatever, she says with a shrug. I ended
up being in that, and it was supposed to be
this one neat little experience, but then
that turned into a TV show, which led to
something else and that led to something
else. And now Im in the Four Seasons!
It took a while for the young actor to
figure out that she was also an artist.
Pages filmography is filled with edgy
indie titles Hard Candy, Mouth to Mouth,
The Tracey Fragments, An American Crime
all of which cover alarming territory.
Not that shes above a little lowbrow
comedy or a good effects movie. Page
made the requisite, multi-episode

ho could have predicted that

Americas newest teen sweetheart would be a pregnant punk
played by an iconoclastic Canadian?
But Ellen Pages lead role in the surprise
indie smash Juno has turned the 51
Halifax native, and still resident, into
Hollywoods It Girl.
Page has earned an Oscar nomination,
won praise for the role literally left and
right (conservatives have lauded Junos
decision to have her baby and put it up
for adoption, liberals more tentatively
appreciate that the girl makes all of
her own choices) and even been linked
to a Spears scandal, with some absurdly
accusing Juno of having an influence on
Jamie Lynns pregnancy.
Can higher Teen Queen status possibly
be achieved?
For Page, who just turned 21, its all
beside the point. She is far too earthy,
serious-minded and, well, Canadian to
want exploding fame to affect her much.
But shes also realistic enough to realize
that it may.
It does in the sense that Im away a
lot, says Page, who insists shell keep

Park Boys, and she did teenage-mutant
duty in X-Men: The Last Stand as Kitty
Pride, who can walk through walls and
other solid materials.
When I started, I wasnt really conscious of what was going on, she recalls.
I just was happy to memorize lines and
ride ponies and things. Then, as I continued to work and started playing more
mature roles that required depth and
passion and some sort of emotional
transcendence, it began to connect.
That was about when I was 15 or 16.
Probably the first film I shot that had a
quality of depth was called Marion Bridge,
Molly Parker starred in it.
It was almost a moment thats, like,
inexplicable that happened. It was kind
of, Oh, I wanna feel that again! And I
just wanted to learn more and take it
much more seriously.
Ellens mom and dad, a teacher and
a graphic designer respectively, were
apparently the perfect stage parents: i.e.,
not like the stereotypes at all.
My parents just want me to remain
balanced and healthy and stay the same
grounded human being that I am, she
says. Theyre incredibly supportive but
they never push me. It always is just
about my personal being, and I adore
them for that. Its a perfect kind of a
situation. We just trust each other.
Between acting gigs, the teenaged Page
would try to keep her life as normal as she
could. Wait, make that better than normal.
My high school [was] called Shambhala
and it was started by Buddhists, she explains. They dont teach you Buddhism,
but the way the school works stems from
the philosophy. Its about openness. It
was one of those weird situations where
you didnt feel like anyone was judging
anyone. It was about harvesting individuals desire to learn, and talking about
and learning about whatever, not being
censored learning about things that,
maybe, in public school, teachers would
be fired for.
And though she was small, Page was a
total jock. She grew up playing a lot of
sports, soccer competitively. As she puts
it, I like being in my body.
That active nature made her into an
outdoorsy person, and it was during a
European hiking trip that Page realized
there is no place like home. Its not that
anything bad happened; but something

the

Ellen Pages Young Republican

(Thomas Haden Church)
in Smart People

just clicked, and it made her reassess

Nova Scotia as both a refuge from
Hollywood and as something more.
I just genuinely love it. I never
thought thats where I would end up, but
Im feeling like it was one of the best
decisions Ive ever made, she says of
keeping Nova Scotias capital as her
home base. When I was backpacking in
Eastern Europe which was amazing
I also realized that, My God, I love where
Im from. I think being there, in a community thats just so far removed from
the film industry, just people working
and doing their thing, its humbling and
it keeps your feet on the ground and
keeps your perspective balanced.
As for Canada in general, Page is
proud of the nations progressive attributes. But she knows enough about how
the world works to acknowledge that, As
much as I love Canada and love that we
have access to health care and things like
that, and there are a lot of wonderful
things, we live a comfortable lifestyle and
still live on this very imperialistic side of
the world. To live well, bad things must
happen, and Canada isnt some innocent,
peace-crazy country, you know what I
mean? Im aware of that, and its something I do want to be aware of. But I do
love where Im from and I love a lot of
the things that we stand for.
Next up: playing a lesbian werewolf
opposite Juno co-star Olivia Thirlby in
Jack and Diane and a beauty queen turned
roller derby bruiser in Whip It, directed
by Drew Barrymore, of all people. Like
we said, Page doesnt exactly follow
the mainstream. But there was nothing
mainstream about Juno until everybody
fell in love with her, either.
However huge any future project may
become, dont be surprised if you run

Whopper of a role
The audition process doesnt

a director and casting agent. After
seeing Ellen Page in the indie film
Hard Candy, Smart People director
Noam Murro liked her for the role of
overachieving Vanessa. So the two
met not in Hollywood, but at a

Page flew in from Canada, Murrow
from Pittsburgh. Murrow quickly

he recalls, I saw her small figure
and frame walking towards me and
I just knew in that instant that she
was the genius I was looking for.

him with kind of a heightened

version of my own voice.
Tom Shadyac, the director of
both Almightys, has suggested that
Carrey and Carell inhabit different
worlds comedically as well. Carrey, he
says, is a consummately proactive comic
actor whose characters control the action.
Carell, meanwhile, is wonderfully reactive,
playing best when things happen to him,
his deadpan face communicating an
absurd comic sadness.
That theory certainly seems to apply to
Carells best movie work, including
Little Miss Sunshine, where he plays a
suicidal academic confined to a van
on a dysfunctional family road trip,
or Dan in Real Life, where hes a
lovelorn single dad, trapped at a
raucous family reunion, suffering in
silence but sporadically acting out in
comic angst as the woman he loves
clings to his brothers arm.
And, of course, in his breakthrough
movie The 40-Year-Old Virgin hes a guy
whos spent the best years of his life waiting for sex to happen to him. (Although,
as an exception that proves the rule,
Michael Scott, his Golden Globe-winning
character on The Office, is definitely the
clueless, klutzy straw that stirs the drink.)
And to hear Carell tell it, his career
kind of just happened to him as well.

They really
captured that
Dr. Seuss
look, says
Carell, but at
the same time
its very threedimensional
and feels
alive
Ive way, way overshot my target, he
says, this target didnt exist.
In fact, there was absolutely nothing
in my upbringing that would have pointed
me to a career as an actor. My family was
not predisposed to the arts, frankly. My
one brother is an architect, ones an engineer, the other was a professional chef
and now owns a landscape company.
As for Carell, he was supposed to be a
lawyer, all the way from his childhood
in Concord, N.H., to Ohios Denison
University, where the acting bug first bit
him. It was just something I enjoyed
doing. I never considered it a potential
vocation. I thought it was just a fun hobby
and extracurricular activity, he says.
After a career crisis, and a stint as a
postal worker, he took a flyer and moved
to Chicago in the late 1980s, enrolling
in classes with that citys much storied
Second City troupe.
Second City seemed, to Carell, to be
where he belonged. He made lifelong
friends among the cast, including best
friend Stephen Colbert, now of The Colbert
Report. He quickly made his way up the
ranks, from Second Citys touring company to its mainstage troupe to a gig as an
improv instructor. Among his students:
a talented young comic actor named
Nancy Walls who would become his wife
and the mother of their two children.

famous 38 | march 2008

(Fans of The Office will recognize Walls as

Carol Stills, Michael Scotts real estate
agent and sort-of girlfriend for five
episodes early in the series.)
It was like the graduate school of comedy. I just found it a place where I could
fail miserably night after night and there
were no implications. Thats a very freeing
experience and you learn a lot. We tried
everything, the most outlandish characters, wed write things that were political
and satirical. The AIDS epidemic was
new and we did a montage about AIDS
that, in retrospect, was very heavy-handed
and preachy, but it was dangerous at the
time and taboo and it was okay to try.
Everything was an experiment.
I think it also helped shape my comedy
in that I became attracted to characters
who werent self-aware, who didnt know
they were funny.
It was idyllic, but temporary. Colbert
moved to New York to join the short-lived
The Dana Carvey Show as a writer, and
Walls nailed an audition to become a cast
member on Saturday Night Live. Rejected
after his own SNL audition, Carell moved
to New York to be with her, and joined
Colbert as a writer for Carvey.
Eventually, the lives of all three would
intersect again when they were hired as
writer/correspondents on The Daily Show
with Jon Stewart in 1999. It was Stephen

who got me on The Daily Show, Carell

says. Wed done all that work together
and they were looking for correspondents
and he threw my name in the hat. Ill
always be grateful for that.
Carell was a standout on The Daily Show
for six years and more than 350 episodes
(often sharing reports and regular features with his wife) before finally leaving
to take up the movie and TV offers that
had been coming his way. It was, he says,
a heavy-hearted decision.
I felt enormous trepidation leaving
The Daily Show, he says. Theyd been so
good to me the entire time I was there. So
I kept the door open because I wasnt
sure how these other things would pan
out. If things hadnt worked out, I was
assured I could have gone back. It was
like home.
Instead, he came back a star a
featured interview guest on the eve of the
release of The 40-Year-Old Virgin. It was
very cool to come back, he says of that
night. I owe so much to Jon and to that
show, it was like coming back to family. I
have a real affection for those people.
From his 2007-2008 release schedule
(Evan Almighty, Dan in Real Life, Horton
Hears a Who! and the upcoming Get Smart,
a movie remake of the 60s sitcom in
which Carell plays Agent 86 opposite
Anne Hathaway as Agent 99), you might
famous 39 | march 2008

conclude Carell is a workaholic.

But unlike many actors who approached
the season-of-the-strike by trying to fit in
as much work in the first half of 08 as
possible, Carell says he deliberately said
no to anything new until the labour situation blew over.
My wifes like, Bring it on baby, bring
on the strike! Whatever happens, well
probably go back to Massachusetts and
hang out for the summer, he says of an
08 tentatively dedicated to rest and
recreation.
In fact, there may soon be a Carell-free
period on the screen irrespective of the
labour situation. When Walls put her own
career on hold for the children, it was with
the proviso that the situation would eventually reverse itself, with Carell playing
Mr. Mom. Weve talked about that, shes
been getting calls too. She doesnt want
to do anything right now. Weve got a
First Grader and a preschooler, but its
definitely something weve discussed.
Shes been getting a lot of calls and

been turning them down of her own
choosing. But she knows Im happy to

and itll probably happen.

doesnt care whether or not a film emphasizes or downplays her
blond goddess appearance, is built around her or makes a lot
of money. Just like North Country and In the Valley of Elah, her
latest release Sleepwalking which she also produced proves
all of those points.
Like everything that I do, it was a very initial response,
Theron says in a recent phone interview. Were still living in a
society where we want women to be mothers and nurturers and
girlfriends. This character wasnt that. Though Im never looking
for anything specific, I do know that I get excited when I find

Charlize Theron as
Joleen in Sleepwalking

Bill Maher directs Theron

Though Im never looking for anything specific,

I do know that I get excited when I find something
that has a little bit of ugly truth to it, says Theron

Directed by first-timer Bill Maher (not the political comic)

from a script by Zac Stanford, Sleepwalking casts Theron as
restless single mother Joleen who, along with her 11-year-old
daughter Tara (AnnaSophia Robb), moves in with her brother
James (Nick Stahl) after her boyfriend is arrested and shes
forced out of her home. But soon after moving in, Joleen meets
a new man and walks out on James, leaving Tara in his care.
Theron says the role intrigued her not as a star vehicle (her part
is not huge), but more as something she just had to see get made.
[Screen time] was never a concern of mine, she says. I
think this story is really well-constructed, in that you really
feel the entire lives of all of these people. The little girl, who is
obviously one of the leads in this film, really carries a lot of the
circumstances of living with this mom. I think you learn a lot
about her mom through watching her.
As an actor, I feel like its not about you, Theron adds. Its
always in servicing the story. There are so many great performances that you can look up, but just off the bat, Hal Holbrook in
Into the Wild is something that has stayed with me til today, and
I saw the movie eight months ago. Yknow, I never went, What
happens to him and where is his development? He serviced that

story so unbelievably beautifully, and I think that thats what you

do. You never look at the size. To me, its more about how
does it all come together. I think thats why Im a producer.
Sleepwalking is the second feature film Theron has both starred
in and produced. Her first was Monster, and she learned then
that not only was producing fulfilling; it could be a sanity-saver.
Its a mixture of a few things, Theron explains. Im very
passionate about filmmaking, and for me thats been through
being an actor and a producer; for others its through writing
and directing. But theres something really creative and amazing
that happens when I do produce. And I do think that producing
actually is a positive thing for me when Im acting. You know, as
an actor, you spend a lot of time alone in your trailer. Im sure
for some people thats a good thing. But I learned on Monster
that it would have destroyed me, personally, if I had to live in a
trailer by myself while playing that. I would have gone stir crazy.
Theron also backed the music documentary East of Havana,
and has an executive producer credit on the film shes currently
shooting, The Burning Plain.
Sometimes, though, it can be rewarding in an entirely different way just to act. Like when it shows you a whole new side

deal with their situation

of someone you know very well. Therons real-life love interest,

actor Stuart Townsend, makes his directorial debut with the
politically charged drama Battle in Seattle later this spring, and
she plays a key role.
Working with him was amazing, Theron says in the straightforward, matter-of-fact way she speaks on most topics; in other
words, not sounding too gushy. I think people want to hear the
little tagline or the funny thing because hes my boyfriend. But
at the end of the day, I was incredibly impressed. I showed up as
an actress and he was the director and, other than once in a
while slipping up and calling him his nickname in front of his
crew, it was very much a working relationship. And I really,
truly believe that he has incredible talents as a director.
And no, Theron is not about to share that pet name.
She is happy to point out that her apparently rarefied taste
and preference for serious subject matter should in no way be
interpreted as snobbishness.
I want to make good movies, she acknowledges. I want to
make great movies. I want to make movies that make people feel
something when they leave the theatre, and that ask a lot of
questions.
But Im committed to all kinds of film, Theron adds. Im
in Hancock; if I read something I like, its not genre-driven or
anything for me. I thought it was a really well-written piece that
wasnt just fluff. There was a real intelligence to it, yet it was fun.
Its smart, complicated, had a lot of conflict. I dont see a lot of
that come Fourth of July [Hancocks scheduled release date].
And while that action pic looks like the kind of surefire hit

even the most respected award winners like to add to their

rsums, Theron sees no upside to thinking along those lines.
Yknow, there is no recipe in this industry, she observes.
You can ask the biggest stars that Will Smith, Tom Hanks,
Tom Cruise theres no recipe to knowing whats going to
work. If youre going to sit around and try to figure that out,
good luck to you. At the end of the day everybody has their
priorities. My priority is just to do stuff that somehow gets into
my bones. Theres no way of really explaining it. Its just something that you feel and it happens and not for one second do I
ever go, Well, let me see; will this be a commercial success?

COLD COMFORT

Although Sleepwalking takes place first in Northern California,

and then in Utah, what youre seeing on the screen is all
Regina, Saskatchewan.
The largely California-based cast and crew braved blizzards
and temperatures of -37 Celsius in order to make the most of their
limited budget by shooting here.
According to director Bill Maher, there was one more famous
Canadian element they had to brave ribbing from local crew
members who had little sympathy for their warm-blooded
counterparts. MW

how he came at it, Pegg says in an interview at the

Toronto International Film Festival, where the movie made its
North American debut this past September. A cynical person
might say hes bored now because hes made all this money. He
didnt walk onto the set like a novice. He walked on the set
utterly aware of lens size and angles, and the line and all the
technical know-how you need as a director.
He is an actor, so he knows how to handle us and get the best
out of us, Pegg adds. It was very reassuring to see him being
so professional.
Far from his moping persona on Friends, a bubbly Schwimmer,
41, discussed his maiden voyage into feature directing and
beyond during a private chat during the festival.
Did it make sense to you to direct your first movie in a foreign place?
It wasnt by choice, really. The script was originally set in
New York around the New York Marathon, but it got purchased
by Material Entertainment in London and their mission is to
make films in London. So suddenly I found myself the director
of an English film.
Given that you had spent a chunk of the previous few years in England
performing on the West End and acting in a movie with Simon, werent
you ready to go home? When he signed up to do the rewrite and
star in it, it was kind of a no-brainer.

Did being there for so long give you a better feel for the British
sensibility? It certainly gave me the opportunity to get familiar

with the particular parts of London which are so fantastic,

which we tried to put on camera in the film. Im a huge
fan of architecture and loved exploring the different
neighbourhoods. That really prepared me to kind of immerse
myself in London and the vibe there. It surprised me when I
thought about other English films other romantic comedies
I had seen here in the States that werent really
representative of the London I was experiencing, primarily in
terms of casting and colour. There was no real ethnic diversity
in the films. I was determined, and so was Simon, to do it
different in this one.
Were you nervous about directing a movie for the first time? I
certainly, in a healthy way, kind of felt, Lets bring it. You have
to bring your A game to the table. I was very prepared. I
worked really hard in preproduction to be just as prepared as
possible, every scene blocked and shot-listed. I wanted a battle
plan so that if mistakes happened, I would be more able to roll
with the punches. I knew we were shooting a very ambitious film
and we had no money. We had very little money.
How about a ballpark figure? Four-and-a-half million dollars. It
was shot over 50 locations over 35 days in the middle of possibly
the most expensive city to shoot in in the world. I saw that we
had a marathon in the movie and when I saw that my assistant
AD had budgeted 200 extras for that whole sequence there
are normally 10,000 to 30,000 runners I thought, did we all
read the same script? But that was our budget.

famous 46 | march 2008

In hindsight, was it convenient to shoot this away from the States, a

bit under the radar? I didnt feel there was less pressure but, um,
there was something nice about being a guest in the country. It
was a feeling that pervaded my whole attitude and whole
experience there. I always felt really grateful, every day.
Could this be the start of a new career path? I hope so. I certainly
want to direct more movies. Its been a really interesting three
years from when [Friends] ended. I think I didnt want to kind
of deal with how it would feel when the show ended, so I just
tried to work as much as possible. I kind of kept my nose to the
ground. Its only after having worked on this for almost a year
and a half that I can kind of check in with myself again. How do
I feel about the show having ended? Is this a new chapter?
Wow, not even a pop-culture icon can relax. Im not brought up
to relax. Theres a real work ethic my parents instilled in me
that I feel somehow that Im not being productive if Im not
working. Im being lazy or something.
Have your parents changed? Yeah, now they say you need to take
a break.
Simon said you did everything in your power to show authority on the
set in a positive way. I had done my homework, I guess.
Thats nice of him to say. I felt the job is really easy in that you
cast great actors. If you cast great actors, and you surround
yourself with excellent people, your job is a lot easier.

You were quoted that you wont be happy until youre a dad. Could you
elaborate? I am a happy guy. What I meant by that, and maybe
its a little out of context, is that I think I will be happiest when
I have a family, when I have children. And I say that because Ive
seen my closest friends happier. Ive never seen them as happy
as when theyre holding their first kids and stuff.
When its not happening romantically, do you bury yourself in work?
Its quite the opposite. I feel like my personal life is probably
taking a backseat to my professional life. I think I need to start
making that more of a priority. Its impossible to have a real
relationship when youre working as much or travelling in
different countries.
After working as an actor for hire on Rod Luries Nothing But the
Truth, the Valerie Plame-inspired story, do you have your eye on some
directing projects? Yeah, there are a couple of things Ive read
that Ive liked. Im also developing something with a writer
thats a dramatic thriller about internet predators.
Although Friends ended in 2004, the public and media still seem very
interested in you. Is that rewarding? I think if you ask any actor
that, theyd probably give a similar answer, which is theres a
desire for more of a private life, but at the same time its really
touching to me that that show and that character impacted as
many people as it did, especially young people.

 May 22

April 21

Expect a shift in the way you spend money.

Mainly, youre indulging yourself at last.
Dont repeat comments that you overhear,
you can easily misinterpret them. And
dont write people off too quickly. The end
of the month sees you reconnecting with
old friends.

Gemini
May 23

 June 21

You get mileage from what you do best

interacting with people and making witty
remarks. Everyone wants you in their circle.
Just dont get into serious debates. In
finance- and health-related matters (even
minor ones) seek the best advice possible.

Cancer
June 22

 July 22

Youre more disciplined and able to catch

up on overdue jobs. Home surroundings are
important, but dont renovate on the cheap.
Avoid making impulsive decisions between
the 17th and 31st. Your excellent memory
proves a secret weapon this month.

Leo

July 23

 August 22

Enterprising Leo is just bursting with

marketing ideas. Find a collaborator and
youll bring out the best in each other.

One caution, check agreements before

signing. A friend or relative comes to your
rescue. Theres a price, and you need to
decide if its worth it.

Virgo

August 23

 September 22

Youre pushing too hard. And while nothing

comes easily, you cant afford to appear
desperate. Continue to work on
humanitarian projects, you can make a
major contribution in this area. A business
deal requires the input of a neutral party.

Libra

September 23

 October 22

Act upon messages you receive (with the

exception of pesky solicitations) throughout
the month. Travel plans are complicated,
but dont take shortcuts. You see the results
of matchmaking efforts. Its a perfect time
to write fiction, particularly mysteries.

Scorpio
October 23

 November 21

Youre in a position to demand justice, so

speak out about any unfairness you witness.
Its also a good month to collect outstanding
debts, both financial and personal. Joint
ventures can be challenging. You need to
keep your partners ego in check.

Sagittarius
November 22

 December 22

You show a more conservative approach,

which pleases the people to whom you
report. Friends, however, want adventure,
which means youll spend a chunk of time
alone. Use the month to express yourself
creatively, to sort out emotions and to set
long-term goals.

Capricorn
December 23

 January 20

Decibel levels are on the rise during the

first 15 days of March. Friends and
relatives are venting to you loudly. But
the month ends on a gentle note, with
harmony in your domestic and professional
worlds. You tend to procrastinate. Get
agreements signed by the 28th.

Aquarius
January 21

 February 19

It only seems that youre not getting the

validation you seek. Behind the scenes,
your work is earning praise. Expect to hear
from an eccentric relative after the 11th.
An old conflict flares up. Youve grown
since it last erupted, and can now put
it to rest for good.
