An unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), commonly known as a drone and also referred by
several other names is an aircraft without a human pilot aboard. The flight of
UAVs may be controlled either autonomously by onboard computers or by the remote
control of a pilot on the ground or in another vehicle. ICAO classify unmanned
aircraft into two types under Circular 328 AN/190:
Autonomous aircraft
currently considered unsuitable for regulation due to legal
and liability issues
Remotely piloted aircraft
subject to civil regulation under ICAO and under the r
elevant national aviation authority
The typical launch and recovery method function of an automatic system or an ext
ernal operator on the ground. Historically, UAVs aka drone were simple remotely
piloted aircraft, but autonomous control is increasingly being employed.
In the past, unmanned aerial vehicles have mostly found military and special ope
ration applications, but also are increasingly finding uses in civil application
s, such as policing and firefighting, and nonmilitary security work, such as ins
pection of power or pipelines. Drone are often preferred for missions that are t
oo "dull, dirty or dangerous" for manned aircraft.
Beyond the military applications of UAVs with which "drones" became most associa
ted, numerous civil aviation uses have been developed, including aerial surveyin
g of crops, acrobatic aerial footage in filmmaking, search and rescue operations,
inspecting power lines and pipelines, counting wildlife, delivering medical sup
plies to remote or otherwise inaccessible regions, with some manufacturers rebra
nding the technology as "unmanned aerial systems" (UASs) in preference over the
military-connotative term "drone". Further uses include reconnaissance operation
s, cooperative environment monitoring, border patrol missions, convoy protectio
n, forest fire detection, surveillance, coordinating humanitarian aid, plume tra
cking, search & rescue missions, detection of illegal hunting, land surveying,fi
re and large-accident investigation, landslide measurement, illegal landfill dete
ction, and crowd monitoring.
Drone have been used by military forces, civilian government agencies, businesse
s, and private individuals. In the United States, for example, government agenci
es use Drone such as the RQ-9Reaper to patrol the nation's borders, scout proper
ty, and locate fugitives. One of the first authorized for domestic use was the S
hadowHawk Drone in service in Montgomery County, Texas, and is being used by the
ir SWAT and emergency management offices.
Private citizens and media organizations use Drone for surveillance, recreation,
news-gathering, or personal land assessment. Occupy Wall Street journalist Tim
Pool uses what he calls an "occucopter" for live feed coverage of Occupy movemen
t events. The "occucopter" is an inexpensive radio-controlled quadcopter with ca
meras attached and controllable by Android devices or iOS. In February 2012, an
animal rights group used a MikroKopter hexacopter to film hunters shooting pigeo
ns in South Carolina. The hunters then shot the down.
Drone also have been shown to have many other civilian uses, such as in agricult
ure, movies, and the construction industry. In 2014, a Drone was used in search
and rescue operations to successfully located an elderly gentleman with dementia

who went missing for 3 days. In March 2015, the SXSW music festival in Austin,
Texas banned drone, citing Wi-Fi bandwidth congestion and safety concerns. Drone

Basically A drone, in a technological context, is an unmanned aircraft.
Drones are more formally known as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV). Essentially, a
drone is a flying robot. The aircraft may be remotely controlled or can fly aut
onomously through software-controlled flight plans in their embedded systems wor
king in conjunction withGPS. UAVs have most often been associated with the mili
tary but they are also used for search and rescue, surveillance, traffic monitor
ing, weather monitoring and firefighting, among other things.
More recently, the unmanned aircraft have come into consideration for a number o
f commercial applications. In late 2013, Amazon announced a plan to use drones f
or delivery in the not-too-distant future. Personal drones are also becoming in
creasingly popular, often for drone-based photography.
Other applications include drone surveillance and drone journalism, because the
unmanned flying vehicles can often access locations that would be impossible for
a human to get to.
In late 2012 Chris Anderson, Editor-In-Chief of Wired magazine, retired to dedic
ate himself to his personal drones company, 3D Robotics. Personal drones are cu
rrently a hobbyist s item most often used for aerial photography, but the market a
nd potential applications are both expected to expand rapidly.
In the United States, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is developing re
gulations for the operation of unmanned aircraft ( Drone ).
