CHAPTER III
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

A. Object of the Research

This research is conducted to describe the requestive utterances in a

movie entitled August Rush by using speech act theories. The movie August
Rush is a drama movie directed by Kirsten Sheridan and written by Paul Castro,
Nick Castle, and James V. Hart. This movie is produced by Richard Barton
Lewis, and distributed by Warner Bros Pictures in 2007.
This movie talks about the musical prodigy, Evan Taylor, who run away
to New York City to unravel the mystery of who he is. While his mother is
searching for him, and his father is searching for his mother.

B. Type of Research

In conducting this research, the researcher uses a descriptive qualitative

research. Descriptive method, according to Surakhmad (1990: 147) is the method
to solve a problem by collecting, classifying, analyzing, and interpreting data.
While, qualitative method, according to Johnson and Christensen (2000: 17) is
defined as a research that largely depends on the collection of non-numerical data,
such as words and pictures.
By using the descriptive qualitative method, the researcher analyzes the
data based on their context and natural setting. As quoted by Moleong (1990: 4)
qualitative research studies the data based on their natural setting or context. The
researcher uses all of the requestive utterances in the movie August Rush as the
data of this research.

C. Data and The Source of The Data

In a research, the source of data refers to subject from which the data are
obtained (Arikunto, 1996: 114). Furthermore, the data themselves may appear in
the form of discourses, sentences, clauses, phrases, words or even morphemes
which can be obtained from magazines, newspapers, books, etc (Subroto, 1992:
18)
The source of the data of this research is the dialogue of a movie entitled
August Rush. While, the data of this research are all requestive utterances in the
dialogue of the movie entitled August Rush.

D. Sample and Sampling Technique

According to Sutrisno Hadi (1983: 75), sampling technique is a technique

of choosing the sample. Meanwhile, sample is a part of representative of the data
being observed (Arikunto, 1996: 117).
There are some techniques of sampling. Whereas, the researcher chooses
the total sampling technique in this research. Surakhmad (1994) states that this
kind of sampling is a sampling technique where all the data are used as the
samples to make generalization toward the research population. In this research,
the sample is all the requestive utterances in the dialogue of movie entitled
August Rush.

E. Technique of Data Collection

In conducting this research, there are some steps as the technique of

collecting data.
1. Watching the movie entitled August Rush.
2. Searching for the transcript of the dialogues in the movie entitled August
Rush in the internet.

3. Comparing the transcript of the dialogues in the movie entitled August

Rush taken from internet with the dialogues in the movie.
4. Selecting the dialogues containing requestives utterances and noticing the
context situation of the dialogue.
5. Taking all the requestive utterances as the data of the research.
6. Giving code on each datum.
Example: Datum 01/ 01/ inv. It means that the datum is number one; the
dialogue is taken in the first page of the script; the type of requestives is
invitation.

F. Technique of Data Analysis

After doing all of the steps in collecting data., the research analyzes the
data by doing the following steps:
1. Classifying the utterances of requestives in the dialogues of the movie
August Rush into the subclasses of requestives based of Tsuis theory of
requestives, namely: offer (off), request for permission (rfp), invitation (inv),
request for action (rfa), and proposal (pro).
2. Describing the data based on the context of the dialogues when the requestive
utterances are performed. The context covers the situations and the
relationship between the participants of the dialogues.
3. Analyzing whether the utterances are stated directly or indirectly.
4. Describing the data.
5. Drawing conclusion and giving suggestion.
