Three types of goals must be established -- long-range goals, intermediate goals, and short-range goals. 4, Your goals must be demanding, challenging, and realistic. 5. Really big success in the athletic world is achieved by athletes who continually set higher standards for themselves. 6. It is far easier to reach goals you set for yourself than it is to reach goals set for you by others. 7. You must develop a deep. belief that your goals will be reached. The clearer you visualize your goals, the more you kindle your desire and gain inspiration for even greater effort. 9. Never lose sight of your major long-range goal. IT's ALL IN THE STATE OF MIND If you. think you are beaten, you are; If you think you dare not, you don't; If you want to win but you think you can't, It's: almost a cinch you won't. If you think you'll lose, you're lost! For in the world we find Success begins with a fellow's will, It's all in the state of mind, For many a race is lost Ere even a step is run, And many 2 coward fails; Think big and your deeds will grow; ‘Think small and you'll fall behind; Think that_you can and you will It's all in the state of mind, If you think you're outclassed, you are; You've got to think high to rise; You've got to be sure of yourself before You can ever win the prize. Life's battles don't always go To the stronger or faster man, But_sooner or later the man who wins Is the fellow who thinks he can! WHAT IS CLASS? Class never runs scared. It is sure-footed and confident in the knowledge that you can meet life head on and handle whatever comes along. Jacob had it. Esau didn't, Symbolically, we can look to Jacob's wrest- ling match with the angel. Those who have class have wrestled with their own personal “angel” and won a victory that marks them thereafter. Class never makes excuses, It takes its lumps and learns from past mistakes. Class is considerate of others. It knows that good manners is nothing more than a series of petty sacrifices. Class bespeaks an aristocracy that has nothing to do with ancestors or money. ‘The most affluent blue-blood can be totally without class while the descendant of a Welsh miner may ooze class from every pore. Class never tries to build itself up by tearing others down, Class is already up and need not strive to look better by making others look worse, Class can "walk with kings and keep its virtue and talk with crowds and keep the common touch." Everyone is comfortable with the person who has class -~ becuase he is confortable with himself, If you have class, you don't need much of anything else. It you don't have it, no matter what else you have - it doesn't make much difference, Sree reer eee ea eee it | \ | LEADERSHIP vin every field of hunan endeavor, he that is first mist perpetually live in the white Light of publicity, Whether the leadership be vested in a man or in a manufactured product, emulation and envy are ever at work. In art, in Literature,;in music, in industry, the reward and the. punishnent are always the same. The reward is widespread recognition; the punishment, fierce denial and detraction. When a man's work becomes a standard for the whole world, it also becomes a target for the shafts of the envious few. If his work be nerely mediocre, he will be left severely alone. If he.achieves @ master " ploce, it i412 set a million tongues a wagging. “Jealousy does not protrude its forked tongue at the artist who produces a commonplace painting. Whatso- ever you write or paint or play or sing or build, no one will strive to surpass or to slander you, unless your work be stamped with the seal of genius. The leader is ae because he is a leader, and the effort to equal him is nerely added proof of that leadership. If the leader truly leads, he renains ~ the leader, Master-poet, saster-painter, master-worknan, each in his turn lis assailed, and each holds his laurels through the ages. That which Is good or great makes itself know, no matter how loud the clanor of denial, That which deserves to live - lives." I III. SACK KICKING GAME There are three equally important departments of play in football: 1, Defense 2. Offense 3. Kicking Most teams give sufficient attention to the first two departments listed above but tend to be negligent when it comes to kicking. A team which is deficient in the kicking department operates at only 66%.efficiency. You cannot expect to win at such a level of importance. One out of every five plays in a gane is a kick of some sort. It should be further noted, however, that something very unusual occurs on every kicking play in a game. One, or more, of the following three events take place on every kick, while they usually do not occur frequently on other scrimmage plays: 1, A sizeable amount of yardage is involved (40 yards or more) 2, There is a change of ball possession involved. 3. A specific attempt to score points is involved (PAT or Field Goal attempt). ‘The plays which involve the kicking game, therefore, are weighted heavily insofar as they effect the tide and outcome of the game. Many of the big "breaks" in a game occur on a kicking play, “ Breaks usually ee is prepared the chance to capitalize upon a "break" presents itself at a most opportune time, The kicking game "breaks" mark the difference between winning and losing. When one team takes little pride and pays too little attention to kicking, they become victims of these bad "breaks Those players who perform on the kicking team should feel great pride in the Fole Which they ‘play in Helping us to win. SCOPE OF THE KICKING GAME When most people think of the kicking game they think only of the person doing the punting or the place-kicking. This, of course, Is the height of Short-sightedness. As important as good, sound kickers are, they represent only a fraction of what we refer to when we speak of the "kicking game”. Punt protection and coverage, fielding kicks, punt returns, punt blocks, field position considerations, PAT § Field Goal protection, defending PAT's and Field Goals, Field Goal Coverage and Returns, fake kicks and fake kick defense, kickoff coverage, squib kickoffs, onside kickoffs, preparations for defending the onside kickoff, kicking tactics, strategy, fundamentals, kicking gane rules...all of these help comprise what we call the kicking game, To have a good kicking game we must be proficient in all these areas. 1 K2 ELEMENTS OF A SUCCESSFUL: KICKING GAME | ELIMINATION OF MISTAKES Most mistakes made in the kicking gane are caused by a lack of belief in its importance, Lack of belief leads to a lack oF concentration and Foi hat follows poor protection, poor coverage, and slipshod applica tion of} the complex kicking games rules. Belief in the importance of the kicking game is the key to elimination of mistakes. erenstty Although intensity is essential in all areas of the kicking game, it is best |observed in héw you cover kicks (punts, kickoffs, field goals). Football's true test of courage is covering kicks. No one will ever Tetum a Kick for @ touchdown ere reer ier gee a ars ail out! FUNDAMENTALS 7 Kicking! involves many precise skills. Punters, snappers, holders, and place-kickers must work many extra hours at perfecting their skills. ‘They must concentrate when practicing. Distances at which kickers and holders! locate themselves, along with timing in snaps and getting kicks away, are details which must be worked at earnestly and tirelessly, These time and distance requirenents are precise, and they require constant attention, i TIMING 1 For best results and for reasons of safety, there are certain time ‘require- nents which/serve as performance guides for the three basic types of kicks in a the game, These are outlined below: PUNTS A, Snap (14 Yards) 0.8 seconds B, Punter 1,3 seconds C. POSITIONAL MATERIAL | | I ba SNAP TO QUARTERBACK ra STANCE (Reverse procedure for left handed center) 1, FEET AND LEGS - Feet slightly wider than shoulder with right foot slightly staggered. Toes should be pointed straight ahead with knees in line with ankles. . Knees and ankles slightly flexed with heels slightly off the ground, 2, TRUNK - Head up with neck bowed and eyes straight ahead, Tail raised enough to becone paralled with back and shoulders, HANDS AND ARMS - Place the ball slightly to the right and forward of the head, Right arm extended as far as possible without being in a strain, Grasp the ball with right hand (laces of bell up) and extend fingers forward and down with thumb across the laces, Grip the ball on the side so that you have complete control of it. Place free hand on the ground on inside of left knee as though you are ina left handed stance. 4, BALANCE - Weight equally distributed on balls of feet and left hand with little weight on the ball. SNAP COUNT - Listen to the QB and don't be distracted by defensive calls. SNAP - Bring the ball directly back and up in a pumping action. Let the wrist turn naturally and the arc of the swing of the arm will place the bail at the landmark, The snap and the first step should be one quick movement. eee MOVEMENT - As the ball is moved, step with near foot and explode OEE the ball, Neneally shige your weight to the off foot before first movement and stay low. Step, snap and hit the landmark in one quick movement. BALL HITTING LANDMARK - (QB's top hand) - The QB should apply slight pressure with his top hand so center can feel landmark.’ Do not try to turn the ball, it will turn naturally, Be in complete control of ball until it smacks into the QB's hands. Never throw the ball to the QB. The QB might have to adjust his hands (in or out) to fit each center. There is no excuse for a poor exchange! = L2 AL - = STANCE - Stagger feet slightly (toe-instep) with forward foot being the off foot or the foot away from the throwing arm. Back should be straight, ankles and knees flexed. Distribute weight equally on both feet with little or no weight on ball. GRIP - Grasp the ball with the throwing hand as if you were going: to pass the ball overhand. Fingers spread on laces and thunb on top of ball, Have a good grip with thumb and fingers. (Do not palm the ball). Wrist of the throwing arm should be kept straight; don't curl the wrist and hand around the ball because it will spin naturally. Place the ball flat (do not tilt) on the ground directly between the eves and as far forward as you can without being in a strain. Keep elbow of throwing arm‘as straight as possible. (This keeps the shoulders up and helps the snapper to be in a good stance to take on defender after the snap). TARGET - Always snap to a spot, never just snap at whole body of Kicker, A general rule is a little lower than the target you want to hit. A low snap is not as dangerous as a high snap. PASS - Accuracy is a must. The pass is thrown by a sweeping motion of the arms and simultaneous snap of the wrist, Be relaxed, do not tighten up in wrists and arms, The right hand causes the ball to spin and deliver the speed of ball, the left hand is merely a guide hand. As the ball comes off the ground there is a slight extension of the ankles and knees and as the ball leaves the hands you try to drive the shoulders between the legs. This causes you to follow through with both hands and helps-to get your weight behind the ball. Bring the ball straight through with a natural: break in the wrists (this is where you get your snap in the wrists) mdroll both thumbs to the inside. Follow through with both hands (try to reach the kicker) and as ball is delivered both palms should be up with fingers pointing toward target. Deliver ball with nose of ball, tilted upward. Do not watch flight of ball, snap head up quickly. There have been many great snappers, in football and probably everyone of them placed their hands a little different, expecially the guide hand, but I believe there are several pointers that you should always remenber. 1. Have a good grip with throwing hand. Do not palm ball. 2. The wrist have to be cocked as ball leaves ground. 3. Roll both thumbs inside. 4, Follow through with both hands; palms up after delivery. 5. Always snap at a specific traget. L3 OFFENSIVE LINE PLAY Effective line play begins in the huddle. Upon hearing the play from the QB, visualize your assignment, possible adjustments and "calls" at the LOS. Keep the snap count continually in mind. If you are slow off the ball or uncertain for any reason, you can expect to be beaten, It is impossible to be aggressive when you are uncertain, Line blocking is based on movenent and striking ability. T, GENERAL BLOCKING PRINCIPLES Never sacrifice the delivery of a blow for the sake of thinking about techniques. HIT the opponent, don't “finesse” him, Next to a missed assignment, the worst mistake is to block "nobody". Your blocking techniques have to becone a habit with quickness and explosion off the LOS. Meet him on his side of the line. Your explosion should be delivered up and through the man. Don't get your arms ahead of your shoulders. A, STANCE (3 Point Stance) Effective blocking begins with a good stance. Your stance must enable to to move with quickness and ease of movement without undue strain. It mst permit you to execute all of your techniges without loss of motion due to poor balance and foot work. You must be able to accelerate quickly without tipping off your intentions. 1, Take a comfortable position, feet slightly staggered (toe-instep) .’ "approximately shoulder width, toes pointed straight ahead and | an alignment with the knees. 2, ‘Down hand should be slightly inside the staggered knee, arm straight, fingers cupped and extended, Place other arm in a ready position with forearm across, the other knee. 3. Weight should be evenly distributed on the balls of the feet and the down hand with the tail raised until the back is parallel to the : ground, Distribution of the weight is the most important factor in i cee cra erage ere arene aera are 4, Head and neck bulled and eyes should point straight ahead. S. Keeping your stance constant is a must. You must be able to step with either foot and make all the necessary movements from one stance. Defenders are constantly alert for anyone "tipping" their i intentions with the stance of their eyes. 6. The stance may be altered slightly to allow for individual physical differences, If the blocker is stiff in his ankles then he will have to stagger his back foot more in order to keep his back straight. \ i. STARTS 1, Listen for the sound preceding the snap count, then-be prepared to explode on the next sound, 2. Move on the snap count whether you are to fire out forward or diagonally, pull right or left, or set up for pass protection. 3. General rule for fast movement is step with back foot when charging forward, step with near foot when moving to the right or left. 4, Starting power comes from uncoiling the hips. 5, First step should be short. Qverstriding is # conmon fault, Use short driving steps, wide base and don't leave the legs behind you, 6. The first movement must be forward and not up. All actions of your body must conform to the direction you are going. Stepping with the left foot (or front foot) must be mastered. Head should be up, neck bulled, back straight and blocker's eyes on the target. BLOCKING FOR THE RUN DRIVE BLOCK 1, APPROACH ~ Explode off the LOS on the snap count. Step with back foot, good wide base, back parallel and make initial movement out and not up. Explosion comes from front leg and hips. Don't over- stride, bring feet up under you and make contact with shoulder on the rise, Anticipate the defenders movenent and adjust to his charge. Don't step for position. 2. CONTACT AND HIT - Strike défender in the neutral zone or on his side of the LOS; target and contact is between the belt and numbers. Prior to contact dip at knees, snap shoulder up into defender, back straight, tail down, legs under shoulder. As you make contact with shoulder bring fists and forearms upward to enlarge blocking surface. 3, CLIMB - The proper hit will put you into good position to clinb your man; have control of your body sc that your shoulders and arms are lifting up and through in order to get him off balance, Tuck your tail under you and bring your legs up under your body trying to step on opponent's feet. WALL - Slide forehead to the desired side and as shoulder makes contact work feet with short driving steps and wide base to get movement, 5, SUSTAIN - Stay on your feet and maintain pressure on the defender. Keep feet moving and legs under you until the whistie blows. If you are beaten in taking the defender in one direction, take him the way he wants to go. « Ls DOWN BLOCK ON DOWN LINEMAN APPROACH - Anticipate the defender's charge when aiming for the contact point, Lead step with the near foot and aim at the inside groin. You must prevent penetration, therefore, the proper angle is very important. Head and cyes up with neck bulled. i i | CONTACT AND HIT = You must meet defender in the neutral zone or on | his side of the LOS and stop his initial charge. Deliver a quick |! ptow, the second step must -come quickly,. striking with the inside | shoulder with the head in front. As contact is made bring the arm | up to extend your blocking surface, keeping your fist close to the 1 body. | I I CLINB - Keep feet moving, sustain contact by tiying to walk down defender's tracks. WALL - Pin your man so he can't back out, keep feet under you, don't extend them. 5} SUSTAIN - If defender reacts laterally or tries to roll out towards the play, whip your hips and legs upfield in a reverse body block. i REACH BLOCK | This is one of the hardest blocks to make in football, so a great deal of time has to be spent in practice to develop the correct techniques, } APPROACH - Short jab step with near foot at 45 degree angle to | outside. Do mot lateral step or raise up or you will miss inside | charge. | CONTACT AND HIT - Do not let defender penetrate LOS. After foot i hits the ground explode through defender's outside thigh with | the inside shoulder, bring forearms up to extend blocking surface. | Squeeze defenders outside leg between neck and shoulders. CLIMB AND WALL - As contact is made, bring outside leg up fast and head upfield. SUSTAIN - When you feel yourself losing your man go into a scramble block. 1 PULL AND TRAP 1] APPROACH - Anticipate defender's movement, Step parallel with | near foot and focus eyes on target. Second step should be up | field in order to get inside-outside position on defender. Have | good body lean, wide base and short driving steps, Get as close | 85 you can before delivering « blow. | CONTACT - Be ready to dip tail at moment of impact. Back straight, | head up and shoulders 1ével, Just before impact take a little jab step to inside for better angle, gather yourself and explode with arising, jarring typé block with head on the inside. 3. SUSTAIN - Bring forearm up and drive him wide. Keep feet moving | & and turn defender down hill behind ball carrier in order to kill his pursuit angle. DOUBLE-TEAM BLOCK We expect to get movement on any double-team. A good double-team will cut off lateral pursuit of linebackers if we can blow defender off LOS. 1, POST (inside man) = responsible to stop penetration, and prevent defender from splitting the double-tean, Step with near foot driving at defender's belt, get your weight directly in front of him, As you feel contact from drive man, work your butt tovards him to keep the seam closed. If the defender charges inside, the post must take him by himself, 2, DRIVE (outside man) - Drive man can't allow penetration through outside gap of post. Step with near foot and drive at near hip of defender, strike him slightly higher than the post. On contact work tail towards post man and drive on defender. Keep position on and don't allow defender to roll-out. If defenders hip disappears to inside, be prepared to block the inside linebacker. OPEN FIELD BLOCKING LOCATE MAN = Locate the man you are to block as soon as possible and go after him. Keep your eyes on him all the way. In order to adjust to the correct approach angle and contact. 2. PULL ON FORCE - Approach defender as if you are going to hook hin, this will widen him, Work to get position on defender to give him only.one way to go. Gnce he is committed, get close to him, dip and cone up through him. Eyes should look into the numbers. Head should slip from middle to in front, Work to stay on feet and naintain contact. If you have made an error on your approach angle and cannot make contact with the shoulder then you should try to cut defender at last minute. Do not clip. 3, DONNFIELD BLOCKING (straight on or near straight on approach) - Try to stay on your feet and run through and over the defender. Look your eyes ané head into his numbers. Get as close to the man as possible with take-off foot before hitting. Get close enough to step on his feet. Just before contact, dip slightly and come up through defender, Never hesitate to decide what type of block or footwork you will use. Hit man anyway you can rather than hesitate. Your body control and angle of approach will determine the type of work. ALL blocks must be thrown with force, Unload up and through defender, we want hin on the ground. Whenever possible come under control (without slowing up) before exploding up and through him. 1 | | OFFENSIVE PASS PROTECTION 1 | In order to maintain consistency in our passing attack, we must develop tremendous personal PRIDE in our ability to protect the passer. The proficiency of our passing game hinges on several factors, but SUPERIOR protection for the passer is unquestionably first. We must not only work individually, but collectively as one well-coordinated unit. We must develop the ability to anticipate each other's moves and be able to make the profler adjustments without hesitation. The rusher has all the advantages, but you must be able to take whatever he has ito offer, keeping your poise and ability to think clearly through it all! We are not so interested in physically punishing our opponent’ - only in keeping him off the quarterback, This requires a unique temperment; one of tremendous determination, and at the same time, control and cunning. Success for pass blockers can be measured in three areas. These may be considered as essential goals or objectives. (1) Number of interceptions the quarterback throws. “The blockers must learn to have pride in the fact thati the QB should not have to throw until he is ready. (2) Times the QB i's flushed from the throwing spot even though the result might be ‘successful, (3) Times the QB is tackled while attempting to pass. Lon't allow your QB to become so concerned about the number of losses, that he throws bad balls. The First and most significant element. of pass protection for a lineman is to "set" quickly in good position to "take him on", The manner of setting varies depending on the alignment and capabilities of the opponent. Getting and then maintaining proper body position is the firét basis for getting the job done, Be cognizant of the location.of the QB on every pass. On the basic Dropback Pass, the QB will drop at 7 steps (9 yards). From there we must! provide an area for him to STEP UP when necessary. The center and guards are basically responsible for the DEPTH OF THE POCKET, while the two tackles are responsible for maintaining the WIDTH OF THE POCKET. Havihg said that a determined attitude is the basis for effective pass protection, let's consider the five major areas involved in teaching techniques: (1) Stance, (2) Movement, (3) Contact, (4) Position, and |(5] Follow-Up, Stance has already been discussed at length, however we must constantly alert ourselves not to telegraph our intentions. { a. MOVEMENT L. Get set quickly into a good fundamental position, with both feet in contact with the ground, body under control and in good balance. If the rusher contacts you while you are still leaning back to set-up, he has the advantage. Set-up in one motion, Don't let rusher get his hands on you. Ls 2. know where the QB is on each pass play, point your "camer" or butt at the QB. Force rusher to charge through the long axis of your body. Don't allow defender to turn you. 3. Make your initial stand on or near the LOS, Guards should be parallel to LOS, Tackles at a slight angle to the outside, but never parallel to the sideline, 4. Always let the rusher make the first commitment, beacuse over anxiousness and aggressiveness are the biggest Sins of the pass Blocker. 5, Take and respect all inside fakes but never go after an outside fake by the Tusher, Merely slide to reduce the distance to a favorable position to intercept man, and keep between he and the passer. 6. In preparation to accept rusher's charge, keep the center of your body directly between the rusher and the passer. Guards - keep head in the middle, Tackles - favor head slightly to outside. Never “lose your head” to the inside. 7, Arms and elbows ‘should never be extended like handles for the rusher to use, Elbows should be used close to your body and all arm and hand maneuvers used from inside out on the rusher. CONTACT 1, Don't explode until defender is close enough to be struck with the nose of the helmet and the heels of the hand. At sane time, extension must cone from "nose", aris and shoulders, tail to the QB and knees bent. Absorb the rusher's first contact with a rising "pop!" (head up and in middle). Control yourself when you pop so that you maintain your balance and position. On contact don't let the bend come out of your knees, Push off and separate with your arms. Face up into man, and Punch hands inside at same time, Hit on the rise, this keeps the butt down. Don't let rusher get into your body and force you into an upright position. When upright, you lose your ability to control your man, If unable to get away from rusher, give ground grudingly and work your body down low again into good fundamental position. Don't get your weight back on your heels, 4, Don't lean-on your man, Maintain your own balance, Work against pressure - fight to maintain balance. It's impossible to lean on your man and get back into good position at the same tine. 5 You can buy time to regain your position by forcing your fist in front and above the tusher's arm pit, just as he tries to pull you (on the side he's trying to pull). Fists must be closed and within the framework of defender's body. It's better to give ground (while keeping position) than to over-conmit and lose your man too quickly, Try to halt defender's momentum by putting rusher's weight back on his heels, thus forcing him to start all over again, Jf the defender slips and is at your feet, attack him and take your best legal shot. 8, When blocking a linebacker or safety blitzer, remember they are usually smaller and more active. They will almost invariably try | to juke or out-maneuver you rather than allow you to take them on. ! Keep this fundamental difference in mind as you block them. Slide to pick blitzer, hit him with short punch, recoil, and repeat. POSITION 1 Position is most important. Have patience, wait on the defender, sg vr eerie a ere eee ee 24 Slide or shuffle your feet quickly as if feeling the ground with them. Don't pup your feet up and down as if running upstairs. ‘The more your feet are in contact with the ground (yet still moving), the faster you are able to push off the ground when reacting to your man, Don't hop when shuffling, keep one foot on ground when sliding. Never stop your feet - even if you must wait for a délayed rusher. ' Renenber a body in motion tends to stay in motion and a body at rest tends to stay at rest. You can't pass block at rest. Keep feet apart and avoid crossing feet. If you can't avoid crossing feet, at least strive to delay it as long as possible. You are most susceptible to be thrown while feet are crossed. 5, If no rusher comes and you are “FREE”, never stay near LOS. Slide back to enough depth to pick up 4 delayed rusher or help pick up an escaping tusher, then stick him, let him know he's been hit. 61 Against outside rush, slide to close the distance, don't get hips | parallel to sidelines, let him pass the "point of no return” on the outside, get close, then get head and shoulders in front of his force, | stick forehead on his outside number, Use defender's monentun to run ‘him past the QB. Keep hips square with position of QB. + Against inside rusher - you may not have to set at all. - If defender | cTosses your face and reached the "point of no return”, step at him, get head in front of his charge and run him into the pile. FOLLOM, Fi Lio Keep defender's hands off you at all costs, If he gets his hands on you and pulls your forward, squat low, sit down when your center of gravity slipping. Ward-off defender's hands with a quick out- ward move of your arms, hands and shoulders. uP. If you have erred in protection and lost your man, pivot and race to cut-off spot to intercept rusher in front of passer. However if you lose your man quickly, you can pivot and throw vour body and back into man, trying to tie him up. Never lose your poise if you break down once. Analyze your technique and that of your opponent and-correct your error. (e-g.: Did you shut your eyes? Nas your head down? What didtie do to cause the breakdoxn?) ‘ever quit or let up until you hear the whistle. Stay with your man. Concentrate on maintaining your intensity. Carry out your assignment alone. Never be dependent on a free man to pick up your man, Your ability to accurately analyze yourself can not be-over- emphasized, Be flexible as your method of attack. If you're being beaten using one method, you must make some changes. However, you must have condifence that if you're doing it the way you believe in, you will handle your man an excellent percentage of the time. Always have a primary and at least one secondary plan that you can go to, Never have to live and die with the sane old technique, Although we realize you can only hold off your rusher for a limited period of time, as lineman, you must accept the responsibility of providing whatever time necessary to get the ball off. Never use the excuse or alibi that you had your man long enough if the QB is dropped. Never guess.-- you're wrong when you get beat because you "thought he was going to do something else". If the Q8 is flushed, the blocker must learn to respond to the pressure of the rusher to maintain his relationship to the new and changing position of the passer. If you have to'cut your man, don't do it too soon, wait for the rusher. Avoid cutting defenders who are quicker than you. A good rule to follow regarding leaving your feet, is to put your opponent fon the ground or be able to recover and block him before he gets to er. When cutting, explode with body block driving your head to the side the rusher is moving. The toughest phase of the pass block is to "cover" the pass after the ball is thrown, We mst sprint to the receiving spot. Long runs after interceptions are the result of poor hustle and alertness. The one time we may rest after the bali is thrown, may be the time that we give ‘them an easy score, BL ! THE QUARTERBACK CONFIDENCE AND PREPARATION ACKNONLEDGING THE FACT THAT GOD HAS GIVEN YOU THE ABILITY TO BE IN COLLEGE FOOTBALL AND BEING A QUARTERBACK, THE MOST ESSENTIAL ELEMENT IN DEVELOPING YOURSELF INTO A WINNING QUARTERBACK IS CONFIDENCE. A CLOSE SECOND Is ~ BEING PREPARED. ‘THE QUARTERBACK MUST BE CONFIDENT IN HIS COACH, CONFIDENT IN HIS OFFENSIVE SCHEME, CONFIDENT THAT HE WILL BE PROTECTED BY HIS OFFENSIVE LINEMEN, THEREFORE NEVER CONCERNED WITH THE RUSH’ AND ABOVE ALL CONFIDENT TX HIMSELF AND HIS ABILITY TO READ, AUDIBLE, AND SCORE POINTS, IF A QUARTERBACK IS WORRIED ABOUT MAKING MISTAKES HE WILL TAKE ANAY FROM HIS ONN NATURAL ABILITY AND CUT DOWN ON HIS EFFECTIVENESS, YOU NILL BE SO CAUTIOUS THAT YOU AIM THE BALL INSTEAD OF JUST STEPPING AND THROWING. A WORRIED QB IS A LOSING QB. AGAIN, THE QB MUST BE TOTALLY CONFIDENT AND THIS IS DEFINED BY CONFIDENCE IN HIMSELF, HIS COACH, AND HIS OFFENSIVE TEAMMATES. NEVER CONCERNING HIMSELF WITH. PLAYING CRUTSOUSLY: SMART, YES -- CAUTIOUS, NO, HE WILL THEN GIVE HIS BEST PERFORMANCE AND THE BEST CHANCE FOR HIS TEAM TO SCORE POINTS AND WIN IF HE IS TOTALLY CONFIDENT. BEING PREPARED IS THE OTHER ESSENTIAL ELEMENT, I BELIEVE THE QB MUST BE READY FOR EVERY DEFENSE THE OTHER TEAM HAS EVER SHOWN. FILMS AND MEETINGS ARE A NECESSITY. HE MUST KNOW HIS AUDIBLE VS CERTAIN DEFENSES, HE MUST SEE THE DEFENSE IN BED FRIDAY NIGHT AND CHECK AWAY FROM IT IN HIS MIND. HE MUST KNOW EXACTLY WHAT TO DO VS ALL SECONDARY COVERAGES. THE QB MUST: PLAY ONLY ONE PLAY AT A TIME AND DO HIS JOB ON EACH PLAY. HE NEEDS TO HAVE COMPLETE CONTROL OF THE OFFENSE. THIS IS NOT DONE NECESSARILY BY WHAT HE SAYS, HE MUST BE READY FOR BAD WEATHER, HE MUST KNOW IF IT'S RAINING THAT HE'LL SCOOT UP CLOSER TO THE CENTER, STAY IN LONGER WITH THE CENTER, HANDLE THE BALL WITH 2 HANDS, AND BECAUSE HE HAS SUCCESSFULLY THROWS THE MET BALL IN PRACTICE, THE RAIN DOESN'T BOTHER HIM, QB 2 1 BELIEVE THE QB MUST PREPARE FOR PRACTICE AS IF IT WERE THE GAME. HE MUST CONCENTRATE ON READING EXACTLY RIGHT, THROWING AND STEPPING CORRECTLY, NEVER FORMING ANY LAZY°OR SAD HABITS, THE QB MUST BE MENTALLY EMERSED IN PRACTICE MORE SO THAN ANY OTHER PLAYER. ‘THE FINAL PHASE OF BEING PREPARED IS IN THE 4th QUARTER WHEN YOU ARE TRYING TO WIN, HOW DOES THE QB WIN? THE QB KNOWS THE SITUATION. HE KNOWS THERE IS ONLY 2 MINUTES ON THE CLOCK AND HE'S BEHIND BY 2 POINTS. HE KNOWS HE HAS 78 YARDS TO GO. THE QB'S THINKING MUST NOT BE "OH NY, I!VE GOT TO WIN IT FOR US, I'VE GOT IT ALL ON MY SHOULDERS, I'M THE DETERMINING FACTOR," DON'T EVER FORCE THE PITCH. IF IT'S NOT THERE BE PATIENT AND TAKE THE GAIN YOU'VE MADE, INSTEAD HE SHOULD BE THINKING ONE PLAY AT A TIME - USE THE CLOCK. READ-STOP AND THROW. DO MY JOB, USE GOOD FORM AND BE AWARE OF THE CLOCK AND DOWN SITUATION, AS I APPROACH FIELD GOAL RANGE DON'T TAKE A LOSS, THROW IT ‘OUT OF BOUNDS, DON'T HANG A POST CORNER WHEN IT'S CLOSE, SAIL IT IN THE STANDS, KICK THE FIELD GOAL AND WINE Il mt, QBS PASSING GAME ' QB always read secondary coverage alignment looking fron left to right, whether the call is a sun or a pass. 60-70 Series dropback 80's| sprint strong 90's sprint weak 100 - 200 - 300 level passes are play action passes 100 .- on LOS 200'~ off LOS 300'- sprint to corer after faking NG FOR QB ON DROPBACK PASSES sTEPs ge ser PASS THROWN 3 Step Drop «9 Sec. 1.5 Sec. 5 Step Drop 15 See. 215-3.5 Sec. 7 Step Drop 119 See. 215-315 Sec. IT WILL ALSO MAKE THE QB'S HANDS FOLLOW THE CENTER FORWARD, SPREAD BOTTOM HAND DOWNWARD AT A 90° ANGLE. THIS IS YOUR CATCH HAND, KEEP IT OPEN ALWAYS, AVOIDING JAMMED FINGERS. IF THE CENTER SNAPS TOO QUICK OR, TO POSSIBLY GIVE ‘A KEY TO DEFENSIVE LINEMEN, C. BEND AT THE WAIST NOT AT THE KNEES. D, ON SNAP OF THE BALL, AVOID FALSE STEPS AND BRING THE BALL TO THE STOMACH, ALWAYS WORKING WITH YOUR ELBOWS IN, Bs _ PROCEDURE TO SETTING UP_IN THE DROPSACK GAME ! (7 Step Drop) If righthanded shift 85° of weight to the inside of your left foot prior to the snap of the ball. On the conmand "Now" turn left foot so toes on left foot are now pointed toward the sideline. Push off left foot with- out taking.a false step, (Imagine your left foot is cemented to the ground.) Kick back with right foot and then immediately bring back the left. These two steps are the most inportant of the 7 you are taking because you kant to get away from the center and confusion of the line blocking. Continue on back (just as if you were running) in a straight line with your head looking downfield at the read always. Work your arms and ‘elbows as you are going back but Keep elbows in not out as if you were going to elbow someone. om The head always looks downfield at the read until the coverage has been determined. Then he picks up the receiver, You are so intent on your read that you are never aware of the Tush. If the route called for a 7 step drop, the QB will stop as his right foot hits on the seventh step. The 6th and 7th step will be shorter. AT THIS POINT, Feet land shoulder width apart just as if you were going to take a snap from the center. Feet should not land together or all spread out. This will cause the Q8 to either not step or over stride. You are now ready to step and throw as the read by now has told you where to throw, NOTE: IF LEFT HANDED, PUSH OFF WITH RIGHT FOOT, LAND ON LEFT FOOT. TIPS ON THE DROPBACK GAME Two-hands on the football. The ball is carried about sternum high. A great asset a passer has is his ability to control his eyes. Quick feet in the dropback game mean balance, good coordination and ability to set up quickly. Make sure you are gathered up or on balance before you start your throw. Get Hips and shoulders square before starting the ball forward, Alway’s step with the lead foot at your target. The arm must act as a whip, not a push rod. Come on off the back foot and follow through just as a baseball pitcher does. Your feet are the key in accurate passing, stepping at your target. It is fabulous what great dreams have been reached by men and women in life and in the great world of athletics when they have been literaily obsessed by clearly defined goals. Three types of goals must be established -- long-range goals, intermediate goals, and short-range goals. Your goals must be demanding, challenging, and realistic, Really big success in the athletic world is achieved by athletes who continually set higher standards for themselves. It is ‘far easier to reach goals you set for yourself than it is to reach goals set for you by others. You must develop a deep belief that your goals will be reached, ‘The clearer you visualize your goals, ‘the more you kindle your desire and gain inspiration for even greater effort. Never lose sight of your major long-range goal. IT's ALL IN THE STATE OF MIND If you think you are beaten, you are; If you think you dare not, you don't; I£ you want to win but you think you can't, It's almost a cinch you won't, If you think you'll lose, you're lost! For in the world we find Success begins with a fellow's will, It's all in the state of mind, For many a race is lost Ere even a step is run, And many a coward fails; Think big and your deeds will grow; Think smali and you'll fall .behind; Think that_you can and you will It's all in the state of mind, If you think you're outclassed, you are; You've got to think high to rise; You've got to be sure of yourself before You can ever win the prize. Life's battles don't always go To the stronger or faster man, But_sooner or later the man who wins Is the fellow who thinks he can. _ oe er or nr eee eee ae WHAT IS CLASS? Class never runs scared, It is sure-footed and confident in the knowledge that you can meet life head on and handle whatever comes along. Jacob had it, Esau didn't, Symbolically, we can look to Jacob's wrest- Ling match with the angel. Those who have class have wrestled with their own personal “angel and won a Victory that marks them thereafter. Class never makes excuses, It takes its lumps and learns from past mistakes. Class is considerate of others. It knows that good manners is nothing more than a series of petty sacrifices, Class bespeaks an aristocracy that has nothing to do with ancestors or money. The most affluent blue-blood can be totally without class while the descendant of a Welsh miner may ooze class from every pore. Class never tries to build itself up by tearing others down, Class is already up and need not strive to look better by making others. look worse. Class can "walk with kings and keep its virtue and talk with crowds and keep the connon touch." Everyone is comfortable with the person who has class -. becuase he is comfortable with himself. If you have class, you don't need much of anything else. It you don’t have it, no matter what else you have - it doesn't make much difference. LEADERSHIP "In every field of human endeavor, he that is first must perpetually live in the white light of publicity, Whether the leadership be vested in a man or in a manufactured product, emulation and envy are ever at work. In art, in literature, in susic, in industry, the reward and the punishment are always the sane. The reward is widespread recognition; the punishment, fierce denial and detraction. When a man's work becomes a standard for the whole world, it also becomes, a target for the shafts of the envious few. If his work be merely mediocre, he will be left severely alone. If he achieves a master- piece, it will set a million tongues a wagging. Jealousy does not protrude its forked tongue at the artist who produces a commonplace painting. Whatso- ever you write or paint or play or sing or build, no one will strive to surpass or to slander you, unless your work be stamped with the seal of genius. The leader is assailed because he is a leader, and the effort to equal him is nerely added proof of that leadership, If the leader truly leads, he remains - the leader, Master-poet, master-painter, master-workman, each in his turn is assailed, and each holds his laurels through the ages. That which is good or great makes itself know, no matter how loud the clamor of denial, That which deserves to live - lives." I, It. A CLOSE SECOND 15 ~ BEING PREPARED. THE QUARTERBACK MUST BE CONFIDENT IN HIS COACH, CONFIDENT IN HIS OFFENSIVE SCHEME, CONFIDENT THAT HE WILL BE PROTECTED BY HIS OFFENSIVE LINEMEN, THERE- FORE NEVER CONCERNED WITH THE RUSH AND ABOVE ALL CONFIOENT IN HIMSELF AND HIS ABILITY TO READ, AUDIBLE, AND SCORE POINTS, IF A QUARTERBACK 1S NORRIED ABOUT MAKING MISTAKES HE NIL TAKE ANAY FROM HIS OWN NATURAL ABILITY AND CUT DOWW ON HIS EFFECTIVENESS. YOU WILL BE SO CAUTIOUS THAT YOU AIN THE BALL INSTEAD OF JUST STEPPING AND THROWING, A WORRIED QB IS A LOSING Q8, AGAIN, THE QB MUST BE TOTALLY CONFIDENT AND THIS 1S DEFINED BY CONFIDENCE IN HIMSELF, HIS COACH, AND HIS OFFENSIVE TEAMMATES. NEVER CONCERNING HIMSELF WITH PLAYING CAUTIOUSLY: i SMART, YES -- CAUTIOUS, NO, HE WILL THEN GIVE HIS BEST PERFORMANCE AND THE BEST CHANCE FOR HIS TEAM TO SCORE POINTS AND WIN IF HE 1S TOTALLY CONFIDENT. BEING PREPARED IS THE OTHER ESSENTIAL ELEMENT, I BELIEVE THE Q8 MUST BE READY FOR EVERY DEFENSE THE OTHER TEAM HAS EVER SHOWN. FILMS AND MEETINGS ARE A NECESSITY. HE MUST KNOW HIS AUDIBLE VS CERTAIN DEFENSES. HE MUST SEE THE DEFENSE: IN BED FRIDAY NIGHT AND CHECK AWAY FROM IT IN HIS MIND. HE MUST KNOW EXACTLY WHAT TO DO VS ALL SECONDARY COVERAGES, THE QB MUST PLAY ONLY ONE PLAY AT A TIME AND DO HIS JOB ON EACH PLAY. HE NEEDS TO HAVE COMPLETE CONTROL OF THE OFFENSE. THIS IS NOT DONE NECESSARILY BY WHAT HE SAYS. HE MUST BE READY FOR BAD WEATHER. HE MUST KNOW IF IT'S RAINING THAT HE'LL SCOOT UP CLOSER JO THE CENTER, STAY IN LONGER WITH THE CENTER, HANDLES THE BALL WITH 2 HANDS, AND BECAUSE HE HAS SUCCESSFULLY THROKN THE WET BALL IN PRACTICE, THE RAIN DOESN'T BOTHER HIM, 1 BELIEVE THE QB MUST PREPARE FOR PRACTICE AS IF IT WERE THE GAME, HE MUST CONCENTRATE ON READING EXACTLY RIGHT, THROWING AND STEPPING CORRECTLY, NEVER FORMING ANY LAZY OR BAD HABITS, THE QB MUST BE MENTALLY EMERSED IN PRACTICE MORE SO THAN ANY OTHER PLAYER. ‘THE FINAL PHASE OF BEING PREPARED IS IN THE 4TH QUARTER WHEN YOU ARE TRYING TO WIN. HOW DOES THE QB WiN? THE QB KNOWS THE SITUATION. HE KNOWS THERE IS ONLY 2 MINUTES ON THE CLOCK AND HE'S BEHIND BY 2 POINTS. HE KNOMS HE HAS 78 YARDS TO GO, THE QB'S THINKING MUST NOT BE "OH MY, I'VE GOT TO WIN IT FOR US, I'VE GOT IT ALL ON MY SHOULDERS, I'M THE DETERMINING FACTOR". INSTEAD HE SHOULD BE THINKING ONE PLAY AT A TIME - USE THE CLOCK, READ-STOP AND THROW, DO MY JOB, USE GOOD FORM AND BE AWARE OF THE CLOCK AND DOWN SITUATION. AS I APPROACH FIELD GOAL RANGE DON'T TAKE A LOSS, THROW IT OUT OF BOUNDS. OON'T HANG A POST CORNER WHEN IT'S CLOSE, SAIL IT IN THE STANDS, KICK THE FIELD GOAL AND WIN! PASSING GAME \ QB always read secondary coverage alignment looking fron left to right. 60-70 Series dropback 80's sprint strong 90's sprint weak 100 - 200- 300 level passes are play action passes 100 - on LOS 200 ~ off LOS 300 -,sprint to corner after faking TIMING FOR QB ON DROPBACK PASSES STEPS QB SET PASS THROWN 3 Step Drop +9 Sec. 1.5 Sec. 5 Step Drop 1.5 Sec. 2,5-3.5 Sec. 7 Step Drop 1.9 Sec. 2.5-3.5 Sec. QUARTERBACKS HUDDLE ‘THE HUDDLE SETS THE TEMPO FOR THE PLAY, THE QB SHOULD SPEAK CLEARLY, REFLECT CONFIDENCE, AND LOOK HIS FELLOW OFFENSIVE TEAMMATES IN ‘THE EYE WHILE IN THE HUDDLE. HE CAN TALK TO THEM OCCASSIONALLY BUT NEVER GET TO NHERE HE'S PREACHING TO THEM WHILE IN THE HUDDLE. APPROACH WHETHER THE PLAY CALLED IS A RUN OR PASS AS YOU APPROACH THE CENTER, LOOK AT THE SECONDARY FROM LEFT TO RIGHT TO DETERMINE THE COVERAGE. ‘STANCE FEET SHOULDER WIDTH APART, SLIGHTLY PIGEON TOED, WITH WEIGHT DISTRIBUTED ON INSIDE OF LEGS’ AND FEET. IF RIGHT HANDED, PUT RIGHT HAND UNDER CENTER'S BUTT WITH MIDDLE FINGER (BIG KNUCKLE) IN THE MIDDLE OF HIS CRACK, PRESS HAND FIRMLY AGAINST CENTER'S CROTCH, THIS GIVES THE CENTER A TARGET, IT WILL ALSO MAKE THE QB'S HANDS FOLLOW THE CENTER FORWARD. SPREAD BOTTOM HAND DOWNWARD AT A 90° ANGLE. THIS IS YOUR CATCH HAND. KEEP IT OPEN ALWAYS, AVOIDING JANMED FINGERS. IF THE CENTER SNAPS TOO QUICK OR TO POSSIBLY, GIVE A KEY TO DEFENSIVE LINEMEN. BEND AT THE WAIST NOT AT THE KNEES. ON SNAP OF THE BALL, AVOID FALSE STEPS AND BRING THE BALL TO THE STOMACH, ALWAYS WORKING WITH YOUR ELBOWS IN. D. PROCEDURE 10 SETTING UP_IN THE DROPBACK GANE (7 Step Drop) If righthanded shift 85% of weight to the inside of your left foot prior to the snap of the ball. Oh the command (set) turn left foot so toes on left foot are now pointed toward the sideline. Push off left foot with- out taking a false step, (Imagine your left foot is cemented to the ground). Kick, back with right foot and then immediately bring back the left. These two steps are the most important of the 7 you are taking because you want to get away from the center and confusion of the line blocking. Continue on back (just as if you were running) in a straight Line with your head looking downfield at the read always. Work your arms and elbows as you are going back but Keep elbows in not out as if you were going to elbow someone. The head always looks downfield at the read until the coverage has been determined, Then he picks up the receiver. You are so intent on your read that you are never aware of the Tush. If the route called for a 7 step drop, the QB will stop as his right foot hits on the seventh step. The 6th and 7th step will be shorter. AT, THIS POINT, Feet land shoulder width apart just as if you were going to take a snap from the center. Feet should not land together or all spread out. This will cause the QB to either under stride or over stride. You are now ready to step and throw as the read by now has told you where to throw. Nort IF LEFT HANDED, PUSH OFF WITH RIGHT FOOT, LAND ON LEFT FOOT. TIPS ON THE DROPBACK GAME Two hands on the football. The ball is carried about sternum high. A great asset a passer has is his ability to control his eyes. Quick feet in the dropback game mean balance, good coordination and ability to set up quickly. Make sure you are gathered up or on balance before you start your throw. Get hips and shoulders square before starting the ball forward. Always, step with the lead foot at your target. The arm must act as a whip, not a push rod. Come on off the back foot and follow through just as a baseball pitcher does. Your feet are the key in accurate passing. We yds.
